Postsynthetic Modification of Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded frameworks have garnered significant attention due to their flexible structures with tailored porosity, making them a promising class of porous framework materials. However, the direct synthesis of hydrogen-bonded frameworks with specific functions is highly challenging due to the unpredictable formation of hydrogen-bonded frameworks. In response, postsynthetic modification has emerged as a potent strategy to imbue desired functions into hydrogen-bonded frameworks. Recent advances have demonstrated the effectiveness of postsynthetic modification in hydrogen-bonded frameworks for studying their mechanical, luminescent, electrochemical, and chiral properties. In this concept, we comprehensively summarize the methodologies and outcomes of postsynthetic modification to hydrogen-bonded frameworks, providing a highlight of this exciting research area.

Chiral Linker Installation in a Metal-Organic Framework for Enantioselective Luminescent Sensing

Linker installation is a potent strategy for integrating specific properties and functionalities into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This method enhances the structural diversity of frameworks and enables the precise construction of robust structures, complementing the conventional postsynthetic modification approaches, by fully leveraging open metal sites and active organic linkers at targeting locations. Herein, we demonstrated an insertion of a d-camphorate linker into a flexible Zr-based MOF, PCN-700, through linker installation. The resultant homochiral MOF not only exhibits remarkable stability but also functions as a highly efficient luminescent material for enantioselective sensing. Competitive absorption and energy/electron transfer processes contribute to the sensing performance, while the difference in binding affinities dominates the enantioselectivity. This work presents a straightforward route to crafting stable homochiral MOFs for enantioselective sensing.

Lanthanide MOF-based luminescent sensor arrays for the detection of castration-resistant prostate cancer curing drugs and biomarkers

In recent years, castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) has profoundly impacted the lives of many men, and early diagnosis of medication and illness is crucial. Therefore, a highly efficient detection method for CRPC biomarkers and curing drugs is required. However, the complex and diverse structures of CRPC drugs pose significant challenges for their detection and differentiation. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) show great potential for sensing applications due to their intense and characteristic luminescence. In this work, a series of new bimetallic Ln-MOFs (EuxTb1-x-MOF) based luminescent sensor arrays have been developed to identify CRPC drugs, including in mixtures, via principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) methods. These Ln-MOFs are built with a highly conjugated H2L linker (H2L = 5-(4-(triazole-1-yl)phenyl)isophthalic acid) and exhibit robust strong luminescence emissions (mainly located at 543 and 614 nm) and high energy transfer efficiencies. More specifically, Eu0.096Tb0.904-MOF (MOF 3) has demonstrated good sensing performances for CRPC curing drugs in real human serum samples. Furthermore, the curing drug hydroxyflutamide has been combined with MOF 3, to construct a robust composite sensing platform MOF 3@hydroxyflutamide for highly efficient detection of CRPC biomarkers such as the androgen receptor (AR) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Finally, luminescence lifetime measurements, zeta potential measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to gain insights into the sensing mechanism.

Hydrogen Bonding-Induced Aggregation of Chiral Functionalized AuNS@Ag NPs for Photothermal Enantioanalysis

Toward the challenges of signaling transduction amplified in enantioselective recognition, we herein devised an innovative strategy for highly selective recognition of amino acids and their derivatives, leveraging photothermal effects. In this approach, bifunctional l-ascorbic acid is employed to reduce silver ions in situ on Au nanostars. Simultaneously, its oxidate (l-dehydroascorbic acid) is bonded to the silver shell as a chiral selector to prepare chiral nanoparticles (C-AuNS@Ag NPs) with the ability to recognize stereoisomers and sensitively modulate the photothermal effect. l-Dehydroascorbic acid can selectively capture one of the enantiomers of the two forms through hydrogen bonding and drive aggregation of the nanoparticles, which sharply enhances the photothermal effect. Consequently, the two forms of the system exhibit a significant temperature difference, which enables the discrimination and quantification of enantiomers. Our strategy verifies that six chiral amino acids and their derivatives can be discriminated with enantioselective response values of up to 79. Additionally, the chiral recognition mechanism was revealed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, providing a paradigm shift in the development of enantiomeric recognition strategies.

Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks with Spectroscopic Methods: Towards Chemical Sensor Devices

Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks (CMOFs) are a rapidly growing field reflecting their potential as selective and sensitive chemical sensors for chiral analytes. The highly tuneable nature of CMOFs enables the size, shape, and non-covalent interactions to be optimised towards specific analytes to engender strong intermolecular interactions and sensing responses. While CMOFs as chiral chemical sensor devices have been explored with electrochemical methods including differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), bipolar and chemiresistive sensing techniques, the CMOFs as chiral chemical sensors using spectroscopic methods has received significantly less attention. This review examines the synthesis of CMOFs for chemical sensors with spectroscopic methods such as photoluminescence, circular dichroism, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance with a view towards their incorporation into chemical sensor devices. Future directions of the field are highlighted for the generation of functional devices.

On-Off Ratiometric Fluorescence Europium(III) Metal-Organic Framework for Quantitative Detection of the Inflammatory Marker Neopterin

Benefiting from the unique photoluminescence behavior of the lanthanide(III) ions and organic ligands, a lanthanide(III) metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) material can simultaneously demonstrate photoluminescence of lanthanide(III) cations and organic molecules and endow its superior applications of fluorescence sensing behaviors. Herein, we present a europium(III) MOF material {[Eu2(BPTA)·(CH3COO)2·3DMA]·0.5DMA·3H2O}n (1) (where H4BPTA is 3,3',5,5'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid) for photoluminescence performance of quantitatively sensing the inflammatory marker neopterin (Neo). The obtained 1 comprises Eu2(COO)4 paddlewheel secondary building units, which could be bridged by BPTA4- ligands to extend a 2D framework. The fluorescence titration indicates 1 can achieve simultaneous fluorescence behavior of Eu3+ ions and Neo via on-off ratiometric effects and thus could be exploited as the ratiometric fluorescence sensor matrix. Such a fluorescence phenomenon of 1 as a ratiometric sensor for quantitative detection of Neo via an on-off ratiometric effect is never observed in MOF chemistry. Moreover, naked-eye visible color variations of the fluorescence for 1 could be observed from red to blue with increasing concentrations of Neo, confirmed by fluorescent test strips as well as portable fluorescent hydrogels. And 1 also shows a low detection limit of 15.11 nM. A synergetic contribution of the competitive absorption, fluorescence resonance energy-transfer, and photoinduced electron-transfer mechanisms between Neo and the framework of 1 realizes the on-off ratiometric fluorescence behavior for Neo detection, supported by the UV-vis spectral overlap experiment and DFT calculations.

Confinement of p-Xylene in the Pores of a Bilanthanide Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Selective Recognition

The rapid and accurate sensing of p-xylene, an essential raw material with a multi-billion-dollar market, in xylene mixture is of great significance in industry; however, the highly similar molecular structures, energy levels, and spectral characteristics of xylene isomers make the selective recognition extremely challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibiting tailorable pores and potential binding sites provide prospects for xylene sensing but a comprehensive understanding of the pore effect is still elusive, primarily due to the intricacies involved in the sensing process. Herein, we reported a robust bilanthanide MOF NKU-999-EuTb with precisely engineered pores to accommodate p-xylene, of which the binding sites were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and dynamic magnetic susceptibilities. NKU-999-EuTb exhibits high-performance in selective recognition for p-xylene towards its isomers. Through a systematical study, it was revealed that absorbing p-xylene into the pores governs the sensing performance. This work provides insights for developing advanced sensing materials for complex isomers.

Yolk-shell composite optical sensors with chiral L-histidine/Rhodamine 6G for high-sensitivity "turn-on" detection of L-proline

Chirality is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and has attracted wide attention in the biomedicine, pharmaceutics and biosensing research fields. Enantiomeric recognition of chiral compounds, especially chiral drugs and chiral amino acids, is important for human health and nutrition. In this work, through the encapsulation of L-His&R6G (L-His = L-Histidine; R6G = Rhodamine 6G) into MOF@MOF framework ZIF-67@ZIF-8, composited material L-His&R6G@ZIF-67@ZIF-8 can be obtained. Additionally, through the etching process, a unique yolk-shell ZIF-8 chiral composite optical sensors L-His&R6G@ZIF-8 (1) can be successfully prepared. Photo-luminescent (PL) experiment also reveals that 1 can highly sensitively detect L-Proline (L-Pro) through the "turn-on" detection strategy (KBH = 1.22 × 104 M-1 and detection limit 1.9 μM). Further yolk-shell L-His&R6G@ZIF-8-based fabricate flexible mixed-matrix membranes has been prepared using doctor-blading technique, which show significant fluorescence enhancement effect under ultraviolet lamp. This work also provides the unique example of preparing chiral yolk-shell framework composite sensors, which have broad application in chiral sensing area.

Metal-Organic Framework Based on Pyrazinoquinoxaline Tetracarboxylic Acid for Fluorescence Sensing for Nitro Explosives

The rapid and selective detection of nitro explosives has become one of the current urgent environmental and safety issues. Fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide strong support for the development of photoactive materials with excellent sensing performances. In this work, Zn2+ and pyrazinoquinoxaline tetracarboxylic acid with high nitrogen content were selected to construct a MOF structure termed Zn-MOF, which had excellent optical properties. The fluorescence sensing performance of Zn-MOF for nitro explosives was also investigated. The structural advantages of Zn-MOF, such as its porous structure, abundant host-guest interaction sites, and stable framework, ensure the prerequisites for various applications. Zn-MOF is not only capable of responding to a wide range of substrates, such as Fe3+, Cr2O72-, and MnO4-, to achieve fluorescence quenching detection but also able to achieve sensitive fluorescence sensing behavior for nitro explosives. In particular, for trinitrotoluene, the Ksv value can reach 8.72 × 103 M-1. The results show that the introduction of pyrazinoquinoxaline groups into MOFs can be an effective strategy for the preparation of highly efficient fluorescent sensing materials for nitro explosives.

Fluorescence sensing and device fabrication with luminescent metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of hybrid porous multi-functional materials consisting of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands. MOFs have exclusive benefits due to their tunable structure and diverse properties. Luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) exhibit both porosity and light emission. They display abundant host and guest responses, making them conducive to sensing. Currently, LMOF sensing research is gaining more depth, with attention given to their device and practical applications. This work reviews recent advancements and device applications of LMOFs as chemical sensors toward ions, volatile organic compounds, biomolecules, and environmental toxins. Furthermore, the detection mechanism and the correlation between material properties and structure are elaborated. This analysis serves as a valuable reference for the preparation and efficient application of targeted LMOFs.

Rational Design and Reticulation of Infinite qbe Rod Secondary Building Units into Metal-Organic Frameworks through a Global Desymmetrization Approach for Inverse C3 H8 /C3 H6 Separation

The development of reticular chemistry has enabled the construction of a large array of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse net topologies and functions. However, dominating this class of materials are those built from discrete/finite secondary building units (SBUs), yet the designed synthesis of frameworks involving infinite rod-shaped SBUs remain underdeveloped. Here, by virtue of a global linker desymmetrization approach, we successfully targeted a novel Cu-MOF (Cu-ASY) incorporating infinite Cu-carboxylate rod SBUs with its structure determined by micro electron diffraction (MicroED) crystallography. Interestingly, the rod SBU can be simplified as a unique cylindric sphere packing qbe tubule made of [43 .62 ] tiles, which further connect the tritopic linkers to give a newly discovered 3,5-connected gfc net. Cu-ASY is a permanent ultramicroporous material featuring 1D channels with highly inert surfaces and shows a preferential adsorption of propane (C3 H8 ) over propene (C3 H6 ). The efficiency of C3 H8 selective Cu-ASY is validated by multicycle breakthrough experiments, giving C3 H6 productivity of 2.2 L/kg. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that C3 H8 molecules form multiple C-H⋅⋅⋅π and atypical C-H⋅⋅⋅ H-C van der Waals interactions with the inner nonpolar surfaces. This work therefore highlights the linker desymmetrization as an encouraging and intriguing strategy for achieving unique MOF structures and properties.

Aggregation-Induced Emission via the Restriction of the Intramolecular Vibration Mechanism of Pinacol Lanthanide Complexes

Pinacol lanthanide complexes PyraLn (Ln = Dy and Tb) with the restriction of intramolecular vibration were obtained for the first time via an in situ solvothermal coordination-catalyzed tandem reaction using cheap and simple starting materials, thereby avoiding complex, time-consuming, and expensive conventional organic synthesis strategies. A high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) analysis confirmed the stability of PyraLn in an organic solution. The formation process of PyraLn was monitored in detail using time-dependent HRESI-MS, which allowed for proposing a mechanism for the formation of pinacol complexes via in situ tandem reactions under one-pot coordination-catalyzed conditions. The PyraLn complexes constructed using a pinacol ligand with a butterfly configuration exhibited distinct aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior, with the αAIE value as high as 60.42 according to the AIE titration curve. In addition, the PyraLn complexes in the aggregated state exhibit a rapid photoresponse to various 3d metal ions with low detection limits. These findings provide fast, facile, and high-yield access to dynamic, smart lanthanide complex emissions with bright emission and facilitate the rational construction of molecular machines for artificial intelligence.

Promoted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Tuning the Electronic State of Copper Sites in Metal-Organic Supramolecular Assemblies

The electronic state in terms of charge and spin of metal sites is fundamental to govern the catalytic activity of a photocatalyst. Herein, we show that modulation of the electronic states of Cu sites, without changing the coordination environments, of two metal-organic supramolecular assemblies based on π⋅⋅⋅π stacking can significantly improve photocatalytic activity. The use of these heterogeneous photocatalysts, without using noble metal cocatalysts, resulted in an increase of the hydrogen production rate from 522 to 3620 μmol h-1  g-1 . A systematical analysis revealed that the charge density and spin density of the metal centers are efficiently modulated via the modulation of the coordination fields around active copper (II) centers by the variation of the non-coordination groups of terminal ligands, leading to the significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity. This work provides an insight into the electronic state of active metal centers for designing high-performance photocatalysts.

Sensitive fluorescent detection of phosmet and chlortetracycline in animal-derived food samples based on a water-stable Cd(II) chain-based zwitterionic metal-organic framework

The residues of pesticides and antibiotics have always been a major concern in agriculture and food safety. In order to provide a new method for the rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticides and antibiotics, a novel Cd(II) chain-based zwitterionic metal-organic framework MOF 1 with high sensitivity fluorescence sensing performance was successfully synthesized. A series of researches showed that the water- and pH-stable bifunctional MOF 1 has a great ability to detect phosmet (PSM) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in water through fluorescence quenching effect, with high detection sensitivity, low detection limits (0.0124 μM and 0.0131 μM), short response time (40 s) and reusability. Practical application results revealed that MOF 1 could detect PSM and CTC in milk, beef, chicken and egg samples, with satisfactory recoveries (95.2%-103.7%). As a novel fluorescence probe, MOF 1, is known the first case that can detect PSM in animal-derived samples, and the first dual-function material capable of detecting PSM and CTC. Mechanism studies displayed that competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer clearly authenticate the high quenching performance of the material.

Direct Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Sols: Advances and Perspectives

The intrinsic lack of processability in the conventional nano/microcrystalline powder form of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly limits their application in various fields. Synthesis of MOFs with certain flowability make them promising for multitudinous applications. The direct synthesis strategy represents one of the simplest and efficient method for synthesizing solution processable MOF sols/suspensions, compared with other approaches, for instance, the post-synthesis surface modification, the direct dispersion of MOFs in hindered ionic liquids, as well as the calcination method toward a few MOFs with melting behavior. This article reviews the recent direct synthesis strategies of solution processable MOF sols and their typical applications in different fields. The direct synthesis strategies of MOF sols can be classified into two categories: particle size reduction strategy, and selective coordination strategy. The synthesis mechanism of different strategies and the factors affecting the formation of sols are summarized. The application of solution processable MOF sols in different fields are introduced, showing great application potentials. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the direct synthesis of MOF sols and the main methods to deal with the challenges are emphasized, and the future development trend is prospected.

A Bifunctional Coordination-Chain-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Framework for Quantitative Enantioselective Sensing

Enantioselective sensing is highly crucial and challenging due to the highly similar physical/chemical properties of enantiomers which may have different chemical impact on organism. Luminescent coordination compounds have attracted great attention as sensing materials based on their controllable chemical and electric structures that can be highly matched with the targeted species. To achieve high-performance enantioselective sensing, the direct synthesis of chiral and luminescent bifunctional coordination compounds is a rational way but highly challenging due to the price and synthesis difficulty. Herein, an anionic coordination-chain-based hydrogen-bonded framework was applied as a host to accommodate chiral and luminescent centers via a facile cation exchange reaction, affording a bifunctional framework that possesses enantioselective sensing properties for the mixture of enantiomers. This study paves a pathway for constructing multifunctional coordination chain-based hydrogen-bonded frameworks for rapidly enantioselective sensing function.

Fluorescent/Colorimetric Dual-Mode Discriminating Gln and Val Enantiomers Based on Carbon Dots

Discrimination and quantification of amino acid (AA) enantiomers are particularly important for diagnosing and treating diseases. Recently, dual-mode probes have gained a lot of research interest because they can catch more detecting information compared with the single-mode probes. Thus, it is of great significance to develop a dual-mode sensor realizing AA enantiomer discrimination conveniently and efficiently. In this work, carbon dot L-TCDs were prepared by N-methyl-1,2-benzenediamine dihydrochloride (OTD) and l-tryptophan. With the assistance of H2O2, L-TCDs show an excellent discrimination performance for enantiomers of glutamine (Gln) and valine (Val) in both fluorescent and colorimetric modes. The fluorescence enantioselectivity of Gln (FD/FL) and Val (FL/FD) is 5.29 and 4.13, respectively, and the colorimetric enantioselectivity of Gln (ID/IL) and Val (IL/ID) is 13.26 and 3.42, individually. The chiral recognition mechanism of L-TCDs was systematically studied. L-TCDs can be etched by H2O2, and the participation of AA enantiomers results in different amounts of the released OTD, which provides fluorescent and colorimetric signals for identifying and quantifying the enantiomers of Gln and Val. This work provides a more convenient and flexible dual-mode sensing strategy for discriminating AA enantiomers, which is expected to be of great value in facile and high-throughput chiral recognition.

Drug release and solubility properties of two zeolitic metal-organic frameworks influenced by their hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown significant potential for drug delivery applications. However, there remains a scarcity of comprehensive research addressing the influence of surface properties of MOFs on drug release kinetics and drug solubility. This study focuses on examining the influence of MOFs hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity on the controlled release and solubility of drugs. To achieve this, we prepared drug-loaded nanoparticles through in situ synthesis and created a drug-MOF co-amorphous system using the ball milling technique. Under neutral conditions, the hydrophilic MOF-based drug delivery system demonstrated a comparatively slower drug release profile than its hydrophobic counterpart. This observation suggests that the hydrophilic system holds promise in mitigating drug side effects by enabling improved control over drug release. The implementation of hydrophobic MOFs in co-amorphous systems yields a more pronounced effect on enhancing solubility compared to hydrophilic MOFs. This study offers valuable insights for achieving optimal drug release kinetics and solubility by delicately manipulating surface properties of MOFs.

Ratiometric Fluorescence Thermometry, Quantitative Gossypol Detection, and CO2 Chemical Fixation by a Multipurpose Europium (III) Metal-Organic Framework

A lanthanide-based molecular crystalline material endows metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with many fascinating applications such as fluorescence detection and CO2 chemical fixation. Herein, we describe and study a multipurpose europium(III) MOF with the formula of {[Eu2(TATAB)2]·2.5H2O·2DMF}n (Eu-MOF) (where H3TATAB is 4,4',4″-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(azanediyl))tribenzoic acid ligand) for photoluminescence sensor matrix and CO2 chemical fixation. This Eu-MOF features 1D square channels along the c direction with a pore size of ca.14.07 Å × 14.07 Å, occupied by lattice water and DMF molecules. The obtained Eu-MOF can achieve simultaneous luminescence of the H3TATAB ligand and Eu3+ ions, which can be developed as the sensor matrix for ratiometric fluorescence thermometry. The luminescence of the Eu-MOF demonstrates an obvious color change from red to yellow as temperature rises from 303 to 373 K and the Eu-MOF has a satisfying relative sensitivity of 3.21% K-1 and a small temperature uncertainty of 0.0093 K at 333 K. Moreover, sensitive detection of gossypol was achieved with a quenching constant Ksv of 1.18 × 105 M-1 and a detection limit of 4.61 μM. A combination of the competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer caused by host-guest interactions and strengthened π-π packing effect synergistically between gossypol molecules and the Eu-MOF skeleton realizes the "turn-off" sensing of gossypol. Importantly, the nature of the Eu-MOF allows showing CO2 chemical fixation under mild conditions. Thus, the Eu-MOF can be utilized as a multipurpose material for ratiometric fluorescence thermometry, quantitative gossypol detection, and CO2 chemical fixation.

Emerging Pristine MOF-Based Heterostructured Nanoarchitectures: Advances in Structure Evolution, Controlled Synthesis, and Future Perspectives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be customized through modular assembly to achieve a wide range of potential applications, based on their desired functionality. However, most of the initially reported MOFs are limited to microporous systems and are not sufficiently stable, which restricts their popularization. Heterogeneity is introduced into a simple MOF framework to create MOF-based heterostructures with fascinating properties and interesting functions. Heterogeneity can be introduced into the MOFs via postsynthetic/ligand exchange. Although the ligand exchange has shown potential, it is difficult to precisely control the degree of exchange or position. Among the various synthesis strategies, hierarchical assembly is particularly attractive for constructing MOF-based heterostructures, as it can achieve precise regulation of MOF-based heterostructured nanostructures. The hierarchical assembly significantly expands the compositional diversity of MOF-based heterostructures, which has high elasticity for lattice matching during the epitaxial growth of MOFs. This review focuses on the synthetic evolution mechanism of hierarchical assemblies of MOF-based nanoarchitectures. Subsequently, the precise control of pore structure, pore size, and morphology of MOF-based nanoarchitectures by hierarchical assembly is emphasized. Finally, possible solutions to address the challenges associated with heterogeneous interfaces are presented, and potential opportunities for innovative applications are proposed.

Homochiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework with Defined Chiral Microenvironment for Electrochemical Enantioselective Recognition

The recognition and separation of chiral molecules with similar structure are of great industrial and biological importance. Development of highly efficient chiral recognition systems is crucial for the precise application of these chiral molecules. Herein, a homochiral zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (c-ZIF) functionalized nanochannel device that exhibits an ideal platform for electrochemical enantioselective recognition is reported. Its distinct chiral binding cavity enables more sensitive discrimination of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomer pairs than other smaller chiral amino acids owing to its size matching to the target molecule. It is found that introducing neighboring aldehyde groups into the chiral cavity will result in an inferior chiral Trp recognition due to the decreased adsorption-energy difference of D- and L-Trp on the chiral sites. This study may provide an alternative strategy for designing efficient chiral recognition devices by utilizing the homochiral reticular materials and tailoring their chiral environments.

Water-Etched Approach to Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Stability

The development of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high stability is desirable to expand their applications but remains challenging. Herein, an anionic sodalite-type microporous MOF (Yb-TTCA; TTCA3- = triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxylate) was synthesized, which shows outstanding catalytic activities for the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. Moreover, the microporous Yb-TTCA can be transformed into a hierarchical micro- and mesoporous Yb-TTCA by water treatment with the mesopore sizes of 2 to 12 nm. The hierarchically porous Yb-TTCA (HP-Yb-TTCA) not only exhibits a high thermal stability up to 500 °C but also shows a high chemical stability in aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 2 to 12. In addition, the HP-Yb-TTCA displays enhanced performance for the removal of organic dyes in comparison with microporous Yb-TTCA. This work provides a facile way to construct hierarchically porous MOF materials.

Chiral Ionic Covalent Organic Framework as an Enantioselective Fluorescent Sensor for Phenylalaninol Determination

Phenylalaninol (PAL) is a significant chemical intermediate widely utilized in drug development and chiral synthesis, for instance, as a reactant for bicyclic lactams and oxazoloisoindolinones. Since the absolute stereochemical configuration significantly impacts biological action, it is crucial to evaluate the concentration and enantiomeric content of PAL in a quick and convenient manner. Herein, an effective PAL enantiomer recognition method was reported based on a chiral ionic covalent organic framework (COF) fluorescent sensor, which was fabricated via one-step postquaternization modification of an achiral COF by (1R, 2S, 5R)-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexyl-carbonochloridate (L-MTE). The formed chiral L-TB-COF can be applied as a chiral fluorescent sensor to recognize the stereochemical configuration of PAL, which displayed a turn-on fluorescent response for R-PAL over that of S-PAL with an enantioselectivity factor of 16.96. Nonetheless, the single L-MTE molecule had no chiral recognition ability for PAL. Moreover, the ee value of PAL can be identified by L-TB-COF. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the chiral selectivity came from the stronger binding affinity between L-TB-COF and R-PAL in comparison to that with S-PAL. L-TB-COF is the first chiral ionic COF employed to identify chiral isomers by fluorescence. The current work expands the range of applications for ionic COFs and offers fresh suggestions for creating novel chiral fluorescent sensors.

Chiral dual-emission composite material fluorescein/CCQDs @ZIF-8 for highly efficient recognition of phenylenediamine isomers and their oxidized product

As a new type of fluorescent nanomaterial, chiral carbon quantum dots (CCQDs) have the advantages of wide source, good water solubility and high chemical stability, and have been widely used in drug detection, bioimaging and chemical sensing. In this work, a chiral dual-emission hybrid material fluorescein/CCQDs@ZIF-8 (1) was synthesized by in-situ encapsulation strategy. Luminescence emission position of CCQDs and fluorescein are almost unchanged after the encapsulation into ZIF-8. The luminescent emissions of CCQDs and fluorescein can be observed to be located at 430 nm and 513 nm, respectively. When 1 is soaked in pure water, ethanol, dimethylsulfoxide, DMF, DMA and targeted substances solution for 24 h, 1 can maintain its structural stability. Photo-luminescent (PL) studies show that 1 can discriminate p-phenylenediamine (PPD) from m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and o-phenylenediamine (OPD), which can detect the presence of PPD with high sensitivity and selectivity (ratiomeric fluorescent probe with K_BH: 1.85 × 10³ M^-1 and detection limit: 8.51 μM). Further, 1 also effectively distinguish the oxidized product of these phenylenediamine(PD) isomers. 1 can be used as a "turn-off" fluorescent probe to detect oxidized product of PPD (ratiomeric fluorescent probe with K_SV: 6.82 × 10² M^-1 and detection limit: 0.112 mM) and a "turn-on" fluorescent probe to detect oxidized product of MPD (ratiomeric fluorescent probe: K_BH: 1.65 × 10³ M^-1 and detection limit: 35.03 μM) and oxidized product of OPD (ratiomeric fluorescent probe: K_BH: 2.40 × 10⁶ M^-1 and detection limit: 0.105 μM). Further, for the convenience of practical application, 1 can be developed as fluorescence ink and be prepared into a mixed matrix membrane. When the target substances are gradually added to the membrane, significant luminescence change with obvious color change can be observed.

Cage-Based Metal-Organic Framework as an Artificial Energy Receptor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Serotonin

Artificial synthetic receptors toward functional biomolecules can serve as models to provide insights into understanding the high binding affinity of biological receptors to biomolecules for revealing their law of life activities. The exploration of serotonin receptors, which can guide drug design or count as diagnostic reagents for patients with carcinoid tumors, is of great value for clinical medicine but is highly challenging due to complex biological analysis. Herein, we report a cage-based metal-organic framework (NKU-67-Eu) as an artificial chemical receptor with well-matched energy levels for serotonin. The energy transfer back from the analyte to the framework enables NKU-67-Eu to recognize serotonin with excellent neurotransmitter selectivity in human plasma and an ultra-low limit of detection of 36 nM. Point-of-care visual detection is further realized by the colorimetry change of NKU-67-Eu toward serotonin with a smartphone camera.

Confinement effect of ionic liquid: Improve of the extraction performance of parent metal organic framework for phthalates

In order to better identify the hazards of pollutants, developing the analytical methods that can sensitively detect and precisely monitor the content of trace pollutants has been the constant pursuit. In this paper, a new solid phase microextraction coating-ionic liquid/metal organic framework (IL/MOF) was obtained through the IL-induced strategy and used for the solid phase microextraction (SPME) process. IL was introduced into metal-organic framework (MOF) cage based on the anion of ionic liquid could interact strongly with the zirconium nodes of UiO-66-NH₂. The introduction of IL not only increased the stability of composite, the hydrophobicity of IL also changed the environment of MOF channel, providing the hydrophobic effect to the targets. The confinement effect of IL effectively improved the extraction performance of parent MOF and the extraction performance of synthesized IL/UiO-66-NH₂ for phthalates (PAEs) were 1.3-3.0 times that of parent UiO-66-NH₂. Thanks to the strong interaction force (hydrogen bonding interaction, π-π stacking, hydrophobic interaction force), the IL/UiO-66-NH₂-coated fiber coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer showed a wide linear ranges (1-5000 ng L^-1) with good correlation (R², 0.9855-0.9987), lower detection limit (0.2-0.4 ng L^-1) and satisfactory recoveries (95.3-119.3%) for PAEs. This article is dedicated to provide another way to improve the extraction performance of material.

Near-infrared magnetic core-shell nanoparticles based on lanthanide metal-organic frameworks as a ratiometric felodipine sensing platform

Felodipine is an effective drug to treat hypertension, but its abuse can cause bardycardia. It is significant to develop highly sensitive detection platform for felodipine to enable the efficient treatment of hypertension diseases. In this work, to highly efficiently detect felodipine, multi-emission near-infrared (NIR) hierarchical magnetic core-shell lanthanide-MOF nanoparticles, namely Nd-MOF@Yb-MOF@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄ (NIR-1), has been synthesized by layer-by-layer (LBL) method. LBL method can adjust the optical properties of NIR-1 and expose more active sites to improve sensitivity in detection process. NIR-1 has near-infrared luminescence emission, which can efficiently avoid the interference of autofluorescence in biological tissues. Photo-luminescent (PL) experiments also reveal that NIR-1 could be used as a near-infrared ratiometric luminescent sensor for felodipine detection with high selectivity and sensitivity, the low of detection limit (LOD) is 6.39 nM in felodipine detection, which is also performed using real biological samples. In addition, NIR-1 can be used as a ratiometric thermometer could also be applied in the temperature sensing from 293 K to 343 K. Finally, detection mechanisms for felodipine and temperature sensing performance based on near-infrared (NIR) emission were also investigated and discussed in detail.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

Preparation and quantitative analysis of multicenter luminescence materials for sensing function

Luminescent sensing materials are attractive for environmental analysis due to their potential for high selectivity, excellent sensitivity and rapid (even instantaneous) response towards targeted analytes in diverse sample matrices. Many types of analytes have been detected in samples of wastewater for environmental protection, reagents and products in industrial production of drugs and pesticides, and biological markers in blood and urine for early diagnosis. It is still challenging, however, to develop appropriate materials with optimal sensing function for a targeted analyte. Here we synthesize metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing multiple luminescent centers, such as metal cations (for example, Eu3+ and Tb3+), organic ligands and guests, which are chosen for optimal selectivity for the analytes of interest, including industrial synthetic intermediates and chiral drugs. Interaction between the metal node, ligand, guest and analyte results in a complex system with different luminescence properties compared with the porous MOF on its own. The operation time for the synthesis is usually less than 4 h; the quick screening for sensitivity and selectivity takes ~0.5 h and includes steps to optimize the energy levels and spectrum parameters. It can be used to accelerate the discovery of advanced sensing materials for practical applications.

Enantioseparation Membranes: Research Status, Challenges, and Trends

The purity of enantiomers plays a critical role in human health and safety. Enantioseparation is an effective way and necessary process to obtain pure chiral compounds. Enantiomer membrane separation is a new chiral resolution technique, which has the potential for industrialization. This paper mainly summarizes the research status of enantioseparation membranes including membrane materials, preparation methods, factors affecting membrane properties, and separation mechanisms. In addition, the key problems and challenges to be solved in the research of enantioseparation membranes are analyzed. Last but not least, the future development trend of the chiral membrane is expected.

Two Stable Cd-MOFs as Dual-Functional Materials with Luminescent Sensing of Antibiotics and Proton Conduction

Construction and investigation of dual-functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with luminescent sensing and proton conduction provide widespread applications in clean energy and environmental monitoring fields. By selecting a phosphonic acid ligand 4-pyridyl-CH₂N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₂ (H₄L) and coligand 2,2'-biimidazole (H₂biim), two cadmium-based MOFs [Cd_1.5(HL)(H₂biim)_0.5] (1) and (H₄biim)_0.5·[Cd₂(L)(H₂biim)Cl] (2) with different structures and properties have been hydrothermally synthesized by controlling reaction temperature. Based on the excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, and good luminescent stabilities in water solution, 1 and 2 can serve as luminescent sensors of chloramphenicol (CAP) with different quenching constant (K_SV) values and detection limits (LODs) in water, simulated environmental system, and real fish water system. Meanwhile, different sensing effects and possible sensing mechanisms are analyzed in detail. Moreover, 1 and 2 can also serve as good proton-conducting materials. The proton conductivities can reach up to 1.41 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 for 1 and 1.02 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 for 2 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH). Among them, 2 shows better luminescent sensing and proton conduction performance than 1, which indicates that different crystal structures have a great impact on the properties of MOFs. Through the discussion of the relationship between structures and properties in detail, the possible reasons for the differences in properties are obtained, which can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of this kind of dual-functional MOFs in the future.

Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites for Environmental Applications

From the point of view of the ecological environment, contaminants such as heavy metal ions or toxic gases have caused harmful impacts on the environment and human health, and overcoming these adverse effects remains a serious and important task. Very recent, highly crystalline porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with tailorable chemistry and excellent chemical stability, have shown promising properties in the field of removing various hazardous pollutants. This review concentrates on the recent progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials and their exploit in environmental applications, mainly including water treatment and gas storage and separation. Finally, challenges and trends of MOFs and MOF-based materials for future developments are discussed and explored.

Solvent-controlled synthesis of Ti-based porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of amines

The photocatalytic activity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be managed by the milieu of synthesis. Herein, N,N'-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and N,N'-diethylformamide (DEF) were employed as solvents for the synthesis of two Ti-based porphyrinic MOFs, namely Ti-PMOF-DMA and Ti-PMOF-DEF, from tetrabutyl orthotitanate and 4,4',4'',4'''-(porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid). Notably, both DMA and DEF were adsorbed onto the Ti-oxo clusters of the two MOFs to shape their properties. Ti-PMOF-DMA was observed with better optoelectronic response and charge transfer than Ti-PMOF-DEF. Moreover, Ti-PMOF-DMA owned a larger pore volume than Ti-PMOF-DEF, imparting more accessible sites to benzyl amines. Ti-PMOF-DMA exhibited better activity in selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of benzylamine than Ti-PMOF-DEF. Irradiated by red light-emitting diodes, outstanding results for selective conversion of  benzyl amines to imines over Ti-PMOF-DMA were attained. Superoxide radical anion, generated by the electron transfer from porphyrin via Ti-oxo clusters to dioxygen, turned out to be the primary reactive oxygen species. There was generality towards aerobic oxidation of amines to imines and considerable stability for Ti-PMOF-DMA. This work provides a new perspective on the altering MOFs to enhance photocatalytic organic transformations.
