Emissive Metallacage‐Cored Polyurethanes with Self‐Healing and Shape Memory Properties

Synthesis of Photoresponsive Fast Self-healing Polyolefin Composites by Nickel-Catalyzed Copolymerization of Ethylene and Lignin Cluster Monomers

Polymers may suffer from sudden mechanical damages during long-term use under various harsh operating environments. Rapid and real-time self-healing will extend their service life, which is particularly attractive in the context of circular economy. In this work, a lignin cluster polymerization strategy (LCPS) was designed to prepare a series of lignin functionalized polyolefin composites with excellent mechanical properties through nickel catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and lignin cluster monomers. These composites can achieve rapid self-healing within 30 seconds under a variety of extreme usage environments (underwater, seawater, extremely low temperatures as low as -60 °C, organic solvents, acid/alkali solvents, etc.), which is of great significance for real-time self-healing of sudden mechanical damage. More importantly, the dynamic cross-linking network within these composites enable great re-processability and amazing sealing performances.

Humidity-Induced Self-Oscillating and Self-Healing Hypercrosslinked Metal-Organic Polyhedra Membranes

Designing autonomously oscillating materials is highly desirable for emerging smart material fields but challenging. Herein, a type of hypercrosslinked metal-organic polyhedra (HCMOPs) membranes formed by covalent crosslinking of boronic acid-modified Zr-based MOPs with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are rationally designed. In these membranes, MOPs serve as high-connectivity nodes and provide dynamic borate bonds with PVA in hypercrosslinked networks, which can be broken/formed reversibly upon the stimulus of water vapor. The humidity response characteristic of HCMOPs promotes their self-oscillating and self-healing properties. HCMOP membranes can realize a self-oscillating property above the water surface even after loading a cargo that is 1.5 times the weight of the membrane due to the fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. Finally, the HCMOP actuator can realize energy conversion from mechanical energy into electricity when coupled with a piezoelectric membrane. This work not only paves a new avenue to construct MOP-polymer hybrid materials but also expands the application scopes of MOPs for smart actuation devices.

Pt(II)/Pd(II)-Based Metallosupramolecular Architectures as Light Harvesting Systems and their Applications

The development of artificial light-harvesting systems mimicking the natural photosynthesis method is an ever-growing field of research. Numerous systems such as polymers, metal complexes, POFs, COFs, supramolecular frameworks etc. have been fabricated to accomplish more efficient energy transfer and storage. Among them, the supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) formed by non-covalent metal-ligand interaction, have shown the capacity to not only undergo single and multistep energy migration but also to utilize the harvested energy for a wide variety of applications such as photocatalysis, tunable emissive systems, encrypted anti-counterfeiting materials, white light emitters etc. This review sheds light on the light-harvesting behavior of both the 2D metallacycles and 3D metallacages where design ingenuity has been executed to afford energy harvesting by both donor ligands as well as metal acceptors.

Multistimuli-Responsive Shape-Memory Composites with a Water-Assisted Self-Healing Function Based on Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Poly(vinyl alcohol)/MXene

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have propelled the development of shape-memory polymers (SMPs) with sophisticated, environment-sensitive capabilities. Despite the progress, most of the existing SMPs are limited to responding to a single stimulus and show poor functionality, which has severely hindered their future applications. Herein, we report a high-performance multistimuli-responsive shape-memory and self-healing composite film fabricated by embedding MXene nanosheets into a conventional shape-memory sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. The incorporation of photothermal MXene nanosheets not only enhances the composite films' mechanical strength but also provides efficient solar-thermal conversion and robust light-actuated shape-memory properties. The resultant composite films exhibit an exceptional shape-memory response to various stimuli including heat, light, and water. Meanwhile, the interfacial interactions can be modulated by adjusting the MXene content, thereby enabling precise manipulation of the shape-memory performance. Moreover, thanks to the intrinsic hydrophilicity of the components and the unique physically cross-linked network, the composite films also demonstrate an effective water-assisted self-healing capability with an impressive healing efficiency of 85.7%. This work offers insights into the development of multifunctional, multistimuli-responsive shape-memory composites, opening up new possibilities for future applications in smart technologies.

Highly robust supramolecular polymer networks crosslinked by a tiny amount of metallacycles

Supramolecular polymeric materials have exhibited attractive features such as self-healing, reversibility, and stimuli-responsiveness. However, on account of the weak bonding nature of most noncovalent interactions, it remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular polymeric materials with high robustness. Moreover, high usage of supramolecular units is usually necessary to promote the formation of robust supramolecular polymeric materials, which restrains their applications. Herein, we describe the construction of highly robust supramolecular polymer networks by using only a tiny amount of metallacycles as the supramolecular crosslinkers. A norbornene ring-opening metathesis copolymer with a 120° dipyridine ligand is prepared and self-assembled with a 60° or 120° Pt(II) acceptor to fabricate the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks. With only 0.28 mol% or less pendant dipyridine units to form the metallacycle crosslinkers, the mechanical properties of the polymers are significantly enhanced. The tensile strengths, Young's moduli, and toughness of the reinforced polymers reach up to more than 20 MPa, 600 MPa, and 150 MJ/m3, respectively. Controllable destruction and reconstruction of the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks are further demonstrated by the sequential addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide and silver triflate, indicative of good stimuli-responsiveness of the networks. These remarkable performances are attributed to the thermodynamically stable, but dynamic metallacycle-based supramolecular coordination complexes that offer strong linkages with good adaptive characteristics.

Guest-Regulated Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species from Porphyrin-Based Multicomponent Metallacages for Selective Photocatalysis

The development of novel materials for highly efficient and selective photocatalysis is crucial for their practical applications. Herein, we employ the host-guest chemistry of porphyrin-based metallacages to regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species and further use them for the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohols. Upon irradiation, the sole metallacage (6) can generate singlet oxygen (1O2) effectively via excited energy transfer, while its complex with C70 (6⊃C70) opens a pathway for electron transfer to promote the formation of superoxide anion (O2⋅-), producing both 1O2 and O2⋅-. The addition of 4,4'-bipyridine (BPY) to complex 6⊃C70 forms a more stable complex (6⊃BPY) via the coordination of the Zn-porphyrin faces of 6 and BPY, which drives fullerenes out of the cavities and restores the ability of 1O2 generation. Therefore, benzyl alcohols are oxidized into benzyl aldehydes upon irradiation in the presence of 6 or 6⊃BPY, while they are oxidized into benzoic acids when 6⊃C70 is employed as the photosensitizing agent. This study demonstrates a highly efficient strategy that utilizes the host-guest chemistry of metallacages to regulate the generation of reactive oxygen species for selective photooxidation reactions, which could promote the utilization of metallacages and their related host-guest complexes for photocatalytic applications.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of a Supramolecular Metal-Carbene Complex with Multifunctional Units

Hierarchical combinations involving metal-ligand interactions and host-guest interactions can consolidate building blocks with unique functions into material properties. This study reports the construction and hierarchical self-assembly of multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex containing three crown ether units and three ferrocene units. Host-guest interactions between the multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex and organic ammonium salts were investigated, revealing that crown ether-based host-guest interactions can effectively regulate the electrochemical properties of the complex. Utilizing bisammonium salt as the cross-linker and multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex as the core, a stimuli-responsive and self-healing supramolecular gel with different functional units was obtained.

Isoreticular Preparation of Tetraphenylethylene-based Multicomponent Metallacages towards Light-Driven Hydrogen Production

Multicomponent metallacages can integrate the functions of their different building blocks to achieve synergetic effects for advanced applications. Herein, based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we report the preparation of a series of isoreticular tetraphenylethylene-based metallacages, which are well characterized by multinuclear NMR, ESI-TOF-MS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The suitable integration of photosensitizing tetraphenylethylene units as faces and Re catalytic complexes as the pillars into a single metallacage offers a high photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 1707 μmol g-1  h-1 , which is one of the highest values among reported metallacages. Femtosecond transient absorption and DFT calculations reveal that the metallacage can serve as a platform for the precise and organized arrangement of the two building blocks, enabling efficient and directional electron transfer for highly efficient photocatalytic performance. This study provides a general strategy to integrate multifunctional ligands into a certain metallacage to improve the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production, which will guide the future design of metallacages towards photocatalysis.

Chiral SPINOL-Based Pt(II) Metallacycles For Immunogenic Cell Death

The incorporation of chirality endows Pt(II)-based metal-organic complexes (MOCs) with unique potentials in several fields such as nonlinear optics and chiral catalysis. However, the exploration of chiral Pt(II) metallacycles in biological responses remains underdeveloped. Herein, we designed and synthesized two chiral Pt(II) metallacycles 1 and 2 via the coordination-driven self-assembly of chiral 1,1'-spirobiindane-7,7'-diol (SPINOL)-derived ligands and cis-Pt(PEt3)2(OTf)2 (90°Pt). Their structures were well characterized by 1H NMR, 31P{1H} NMR, ESI-TOF-MS, and X-ray crystallography, and their photophysical properties were investigated by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies. Then, the antitumor activity of the two chiral metallacycles in vitro was further tested. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibited strong cytotoxicity, especially toward the A549 cells. The destruction of the mitochondrial function, the inhibition of the glutathione (GSH)/glutathione disulfide (GSSG) level, and the inactivation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) induced by complexes 1 and 2 led to the massive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The overloaded ROS then triggered apoptotic cell death, and the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) further induced immunogenic cell death (ICD). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of Pt(II)-based metallacycles that can induce immunogenic cell death, providing a new strategy for the future design and construction of immune-modulating platinum agents in cancer therapy.

A stretchable, mechanically robust polymer exhibiting shape-memory-assisted self-healing and clustering-triggered emission

Self-healing and recyclable polymer materials are being developed through extensive investigations on noncovalent bond interactions. However, they typically exhibit inferior mechanical properties. Therefore, the present study is aimed at synthesizing a polyurethane-urea elastomer with excellent mechanical properties and shape-memory-assisted self-healing behavior. In particular, the introduction of coordination and hydrogen bonds into elastomer leads to the optimal elastomer exhibiting good mechanical properties (strength, 76.37 MPa; elongation at break, 839.10%; toughness, 308.63 MJ m-3) owing to the phased energy dissipation mechanism involving various supramolecular interactions. The elastomer also demonstrates shape-memory properties, whereby the shape recovery force that brings damaged surfaces closer and facilitates self-healing. Surprisingly, all specimens exhibite clustering-triggered emission, with cyan fluorescence is observed under ultraviolet light. The strategy reported herein for developing multifunctional materials with good mechanical properties can be leveraged to yield stimulus-responsive polymers and smart seals.

Room-temperature self-healing polyurethane-cellulose nanocrystal composites with strong strength and toughness based on dynamic bonds

Self-healing materials suffer from a trade-off relationship between their self-healing ability and mechanical strength, which limits their applications. Therefore, we developed a room-temperature self-healing supramolecular composite based on polyurethane (PU) elastomer, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and multiple dynamic bonds. In this system, the abundant hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of the CNCs form multiple hydrogen bonds with the PU elastomer, yielding a dynamic physical cross-linking network. This dynamic network enables self-healing without degrading the mechanical properties. As a result, the obtained supramolecular composites exhibited high tensile strength (24.5 ± 2.3 MPa), good elongation at break (1484.8 ± 74.9 %), favourable toughness (156.4 ± 31.1 MJ m^-3, which is equivalent to that of spider silk and 5.1-times higher than that of aluminium), and excellent self-healing efficiency (95 ± 1.9 %). Notably, the mechanical properties of the supramolecular composites were almost completely retained after reprocessing three times. Further, using these composites, flexible electronic sensors were prepared and tested. In summary, we have reported a method for preparing supramolecular materials having high toughness and room temperature self-healing ability that have applications in flexible electronics.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Multifunctional Coordination Cages with Triangular Metal-Metal-Bonded Units

Herein, a series of face-capped (Tr₂M₃)₄L₄ (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl cationic ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) tetrahedral cages 1-3 functionalized with 12 appended crown ether moieties were designed and synthesized. The reversible binding of ammonium cations with peripheral crown ether moieties to adjust internal guest-binding was realized. Combination of a bisammonium linker and cage 3 led to the formation of a supramolecular gel SPN1 via host-guest interactions between the crown ether moieties and ammonium salts. The obtained supramolecular gel exhibited multiple-stimuli responsiveness, injectability, and excellent self-healing properties and could be further developed to a SPN1-based drug delivery system. In addition, the storage modulus of SPN1 was 20 times higher than that of the model gel without Pd-Pd bonded blocks, and SPN1 had better self-healing properties compared with the latter, demonstrating the importance of such cages in improving mechanical strength without losing the dynamic properties of the material. The cytotoxicity in vitro of the drug-loaded (doxorubicin or methotrexate) SPN1 was significantly improved compared to that of free drugs.
