Water-Driven Synthesis of Deep-Blue Perovskite Colloidal Quantum Wells for Electroluminescent Devices

Efficient and Stable Multicolor Emissions of the Coumarin-Modified Cs3LnCl6 Lead-Free Perovskite Nanocrystals and LED Application

Lanthanide-based lead-free perovskite materials hold great promise for the development of high-resolution full-color displays in the future. Here, various Cs3LnCl6 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) emitting light across the visible to near-infrared spectrum with remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are systemically prepared. Especially, by introducing multifunctional coumarin small molecules into Cs3EuCl6 NCs as an intermediate state, Cs3EuCl6 NCs can achieve an impressive PLQY of 92.4% with pure red emission and an exceptional energy transfer efficiency of nearly 93.2%. Furthermore, the lanthanide-based electroluminescent devices in red, green, and blue are successfully fabricated. Among them, the Cs3EuCl6-NC-based red light-emitting diode (LED) demonstrates a FWHM of 18 nm at 617 nm, an external quantum efficiency up to 5.17%, and a maximum brightness of 2373 cd m-2, which is the most excellent reported for lead-free narrowband (within 20 nm) emission devices. Notably, these devices exhibit an operating half-life of 440 h at a brightness level of 100 cd m-2, surpassing the performance of most reported lead-free perovskite LEDs (PLEDs). This work opens up exciting possibilities for the future commercialization of lanthanide-based PLEDs in the display industry, paving the way for more vibrant, energy-efficient, and long-lasting display technologies.

Gradient Alloy Shell Enabling Colloidal Quantum Wells Light-Emitting Diodes with Efficiency Exceeding 22

Colloidal quantum well (CQW) based light emitting diodes (LEDs) possess extra-high theoretical efficiency, but their performance still lags far behind conventional LEDs due to severe exciton quenching and unbalanced charge injection. Herein, we devised a gradient composition CdxZn1-xS shell to address these issues. The epitaxial shell with gradient composition was achieved through controlling competition between Cd2+ and Zn2+ cations to preferentially bind to the anions S2-. Thus, exciton quenching was suppressed greatly by passivating defects and reducing nonradiative recombination, thereby achieving near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). The gradient energy level of the shell reduced the hole injection barriers and increased the hole injection efficiency to balance the charge injection of LEDs. As a result, the LEDs achieved a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.83%, luminance of 111,319 cd/m2 and a long operational lifetime (T95@100 cd/m2) over 6,500 h, demonstrating the state-of-the-art performance for the CQW based LEDs.

Two-dimensional Cs3Sb2Br9 inducing transformation of three-dimensional CsPbBr3 to nanoplates

This communication describes an effective morphological control strategy involving introducing two-dimensional (2D) Cs3Sb2Br9 to induce a transformation of three-dimensional (3D) CsPbBr3 to 2D nanoplates (NPLs). By tuning the Sb/Pb ratio, 2D CsPbBr3 NPLs exhibiting a deep-blue emission centered at a wavelength of 464 nm with an FWHM of 24 nm have been produced. The absence of organic ligands in these high-quality 2D NPLs mitigate the instability issue induced by organic ligand migration and penetration, and these NPLs exhibit 80% of the initial PL intensity after 55 days.

Alkylammonium Halides for Phase Regulation and Luminescence Modulation of Cesium Copper Iodide Nanocrystals for Light-Emitting Diodes

All-inorganic cesium copper halide nanocrystals have attracted extensive attention due to their cost-effectiveness, low toxicity, and rich luminescence properties. However, controlling the synthesis of these nanocrystals to achieve a precise composition and high luminous efficiency remains a challenge that limits their future application. Herein, we report the effect of oleylammonium iodide on the synthesis of copper halide nanocrystals to control the composition and phase and modulate their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs). For CsCu2I3, the PL peak is centered at 560 nm with a PLQY of 47.3%, while the PL peak of Cs3Cu2I5 is located at 440 nm with an unprecedently high PLQY of 95.3%. Furthermore, the intermediate-state CsCu2I3/Cs3Cu2I5 heterostructure shows white light emission with a PLQY of 66.4%, chromaticity coordinates of (0.3176, 0.3306), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 90, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6234 K, indicating that it is promising for single-component white-light-emitting applications. The nanocrystals reported in this study have excellent luminescence properties, low toxicity, and superior stability, so they are more suitable for future light-emitting applications.

Phase Control and Singlet Energy Transfer Enabled by Trimethylamine Modified Boron Dipyrromethene for Stable CsPbBr3 Quantum Wells

The phase distribution and organic spacer cations play pivotal roles in determining the emission performance and stability of perovskite quantum wells (QWs). Here, we propose a universal molecular regulation strategy to tailor phase distribution and enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 QWs. The capability of sterically hindered ligands with formidable surface binding groups is underscored in directing CsPbBr3 growth and refining phase distribution. With trimethylamine modified boron dipyrromethene (BDP-TMA) ligand as a representative, the BDP-TMA driven can precisely control phase distribution and passivate defects of CsPbBr3 . Notably, BDP-TMA acts as a co-spacer organic entity in obtained BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 , facilitating efficient singlet energy transfer and tailoring the luminescence to produce a distinctive bluish-white emission. The BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 demonstrates significant phase stability under water exposure, light irradiation, and moderate temperature. Interestingly, BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 exhibits the thermally-induced dynamic fluorescence control at elevated temperatures, which can be achieved feasible for advanced information encryption. This discovery paves the way for the exploration of perovskite QWs in applications like temperature sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and other advanced optical smart technologies.

Spectrally Stable Deep-Blue Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Layer-Transferred Single-Crystalline Ruddlesden-Popper Halide Perovskites

A novel approach to producing high-color-purity blue-light-emitting diodes based on single-crystalline Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) is reported. The utilization of a pure bromide composition eliminates any possibility of halide segregation, which can otherwise lead to undesired shifts in the emission wavelength or irreversible degradation of the spectral line width. Phase-pure PEA2MAPb2Br7 single crystals with a lateral size exceeding 1 cm2 can be synthesized using the inverse temperature crystallization method. To prepare RPP layers with a thickness of less than 50 nm, we employ a thinning process of the initially thick bulk crystals, followed by a dry-transfer process to place them onto a hole transport layer and an indium-tin-oxide-coated glass substrate. By utilizing polydimethylsiloxane as a handling layer, deformations of the bulk RPP crystal and exfoliated RPP layer, as well as the formation of defects such as pinholes, can be effectively suppressed. Subsequent depositions of an electron transport layer and a metal contact complete the fabrication of electroluminescence (EL) devices. The EL devices utilizing the single-crystalline RPP demonstrate excellent spectral stability across a broad range of the applied bias voltage spanning from 4.5 to 10 V, exhibiting a significantly narrow line width of 14 nm at an emission wavelength of 440 nm that can potentially cover 99.3% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut. The sharp EL emission spectrum can be effectively preserved, avoiding any broadening of the line width, by suppressing Joule heating throughout the device operation, in addition to the intrinsic stability of single-crystalline RPPs.

Molecular Bridge on Buried Interface for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

The interface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is significantly important for charge transfer and device stability, while the buried interface with the impact on perovskite film growth has been paid less attention. Herein, we use a molecular modifier, glycocyamine (GDA) to build a molecular bridge on the buried interface of SnO2 /perovskite, resulting in superior interfacial contact. This is achieved through the strongly interaction between GDA and SnO2 , which also appreciably modulates the energy level. Moreover, GDA can regulate the perovskite crystal growth, yielding perovskite film with enlarged grain size and absence of pinholes, exhibiting substantially reduced defect density. Consequently, PSCs with GDA modification demonstrate significant improvement of open circuit voltage (close to 1.2 V) and fill factor, leading to an improved power conversion efficiency from 22.60 % to 24.70 %. Additionally, stabilities of GDA devices under maximum power point and 85 °C heat both perform better than the control devices.
