Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Encapsulated Alginate Beads for the Removal of Mercury Ions: Design, Synthesis, Density Functional Theory Calculation, and Demonstration in a Batch and Fixed-Bed Process

Various nanomaterials have been envisaged mainly through batch studies for environmental remediation application. The real utilization of these new generation adsorbents in large scale pose a difficulty due to its low density and small size which makes it difficult for isolation after application. In this context, nanoadsorbents polymer composite beads can be seen as a way out. Here, functionalized CNTs (carbon nanotubes) have been fabricated into micro beads with sodium alginate. The alginate-functionalized CNT (Alg-f-CNT) beads were then comprehensively evaluated for batch and fixed-bed column separation of divalent mercury ions from an aqueous medium. The effects of process parameters such as pH, contact time, feed Hg2+ concentration, and temperature were studied. Simulation of the experimental data suggested that adsorption is an endothermic spontaneous process which follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. The desorption of the Hg2+ ion from used adsorbent was possible with 1 M HNO3. The breakthrough curves at different process parameters were investigated during fixed-bed column separation and found to be in good agreement with Thomas model. The regeneration and reusability of the adsorbent were tested up to five cycles without a significant decrease in the removal performance. Density functional theory studies revealed stronger interaction of Alg-f-CNT with Hg compared to free alginic acid and established the role of carboxyl and oxo groups present in the adsorbent in the coordination of the Hg2+ ions. The experimental results demonstrate that functionalized CNT-encapsulated alginate beads are a promising alternate material, which can be used to remove mercury in the fixed-bed column mode of the operation.

Antibacterial Biodegradable Films Based on Alginate with Silver Nanoparticles and Lemongrass Essential Oil-Innovative Packaging for Cheese

Replacing the petroleum-based materials in the food industry is one of the main objectives of the scientists and decision makers worldwide. Biodegradable packaging will help diminish the environmental impact of human activity. Improving such biodegradable packaging materials by adding antimicrobial activity will not only extend the shelf life of foodstuff, but will also eliminate some health hazards associated with food borne diseases, and by diminishing the food spoilage will decrease the food waste. The objective of this research was to obtain innovative antibacterial films based on a biodegradable polymer, namely alginate. Films were characterized by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and microscopy, complex thermal analysis (TG-DSC-FTIR), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Water vapor permeability and swelling behavior were also determined. As antimicrobial agents, we used silver spherical nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and lemongrass essential oil (LGO), which were found to act in a synergic way. The obtained films exhibited strong antibacterial activity against tested strains, two Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhi). Best results were obtained against Bacillus cereus. The tests indicate that the antimicrobial films can be used as packaging, preserving the color, surface texture, and softness of cheese for 14 days. At the same time, the color of the films changed (darkened) as a function of temperature and light presence, a feature that can be used to monitor the storage conditions for sensitive food.

Ions-induced gelation of alginate: Mechanisms and applications

Alginate is an important natural biopolymer and has been widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries. Ca²⁺-induced gelation is one of the most important functional properties of alginate. The gelation mechanism is well-known as egg-box model, which has been intensively studied in the last five decades. Alginate also forms gels with many other monovalent, divalent or trivalent cations, and their gelation can possess different mechanisms from that of Ca²⁺-induced gelation. The resulted gels also exhibit different properties that lead to various applications. This study is proposed to summarize the gelation mechanisms of alginate induced by different cations, mainly including H⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Cu²⁺, Sr²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Al³⁺, and Fe³⁺. The mechanism of H⁺-induced gelation of alginate mainly depends on the protonation of carboxyl groups. Divalent ions-induced gelation of alginate show different selection towards G, M, and GM blocks. Trivalent ions can bind to carboxyl groups of uronates with no selection. The properties and applications of these ionotropic alginate gels are also discussed. The knowledge gained in this study would provide useful information for the practical applications of alginate.

Green synthesis of magnetic 3D bio-adsorbent by corn straw core and chitosan for methylene blue removal

In this work, a novel bio-adsorbent with a unique structure was prepared through one-step crosslinking in the emulsion using corn straw core (CSC), CoFe₂O₄ and chitosan (CS) as raw materials for adsorption of methylene blue (MB). The preparation method of the adsorbent was simple and environmentally friendly. In the adsorbent, the agricultural waste of CSC acted as scaffold and was wrapped with CS. CoFe₂O₄ was embedded in CS, giving magnetic property to the adsorbent, which was beneficial to the separation process. XRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM were utilized to characterize the adsorbent and the factors affecting adsorption removal efficiency were explored. The pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model described the adsorption behaviour well. The equilibrium adsorption capacity was 122 mg g^-1 for MB at 298 K. The thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption was a spontaneous, exothermic and randomness decrease process. MB loaded on the adsorbent could be desorbed by immersing in dilute acid solution, indicating that this kind of biomass adsorbent can be widely used in the field of adsorption.

Alginate Gel Reinforcement with Chitin Nanowhiskers Modulates Rheological Properties and Drug Release Profile

Hydrogels are promising materials for various applications, including drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wastewater treatment. In this work, we designed an alginate (ALG) hydrogel containing partially deacetylated chitin nanowhiskers (CNW) as a filler. Gelation in the system occurred by both the protonation of alginic acid and the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex with deacetylated CNW surface chains. Morphological changes in the gel manifested as a honeycomb structure in the freeze-dried gel, unlike the layered structure of an ALG gel. Disturbance of the structural orientation of the gels by the introduction of CNW was also expressed as a decrease in the intensity of X-ray diffraction reflexes. All studied systems were non-Newtonian liquids that violated the Cox-Merz rule. An increase in the content of CNW in the ALG-CNW hydrogel resulted in increases in the yield stress, maximum Newtonian viscosity, and relaxation time. Inclusion of CNW prolonged the release of tetracycline due to changes in diffusion. The first phases (0-5 h) of the release profiles were well described by the Higuchi model. ALG-CNW hydrogels may be of interest as soft gels for controlled topical or intestinal drug delivery.

In situ co-precipitation preparation of a superparamagnetic graphene oxide/Fe3O4 nanocomposite as an adsorbent for wastewater purification: synthesis, characterization, kinetics, and isotherm studies

A superparamagnetic graphene oxide (GO)/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite (MGO) was prepared by a facile in situ co-precipitation strategy, resulting in a prospective material for the application of graphene oxide in wastewater treatment. MGO was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The prepared adsorbent showed a high adsorption efficiency relevant to the purification of dye-contaminated wastewater and could be readily magnetically separated. The maximum adsorption capacity was ca. 546.45 mg g^-1 for the common cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and ca. 628.93 mg g^-1 for the anionic dye Congo red (CR). The adsorption processes fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well, which revealed that these processes may involve the chemical interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Furthermore, the prepared magnetic adsorbent had a wide effective pH range from 5 to 11 and showed good stability after five reuse cycles. The synthetic MGO showed great potential as a promising adsorbent for organic contaminant removal in wastewater treatment.

Facile Synthesis, Characterization of Poly-2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole Nanoparticles for Rapid Removal of Mercury and Silver Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Industrial pollution by heavy metal ions such as Hg2+ and Ag⁺ is a universal problem owing to the toxicity of heavy metals. In this study, a novel nano-adsorbent, i.e., poly-2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (PTT), was synthesized and used to selectively adsorb mercury and silver ions from aqueous solutions. PTT nanoparticles were synthesized via chemical oxidative dehydrogenation polymerization under mild conditions. Oxidant species, medium, monomer concentration, oxidant/monomer molar ratio, and polymerization temperature were optimized to obtain optimum yields. The molecular structure and morphology of the nanoparticles were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization/time-of-flight (MALDI/TOF) mass and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), theoretical calculations and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. It was found that the polymerization of 2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiodiazole occurs through head-to-tail coupling between the S(2) and C(5) positions. The PTT nanoparticles having a peculiar synergic combination of four kinds of active groups, S⁻, ⁻SH, N⁻N, and =N⁻ with a small particle size of 30⁻200 nm exhibit ultrarapid initial adsorption rates of 1500 mg(Hg)·g-1·h-1 and 5364 mg(Ag)·g-1·h-1 and high adsorption capacities of up to 186.9 mg(Hg)·g-1 and 193.1 mg(Ag)·g-1, becoming ultrafast chelate nanosorbents with high adsorption capacities. Kinetic study indicates that the adsorption of Hg2+ and Ag⁺ follows the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting a chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step during the adsorption process. The Hg2+ and Ag⁺-loaded PTT nanoparticles could be effectively regenerated with 0.1 mol·L-1 EDTA or 1 mol·L-1 HNO₃ without significantly losing their adsorption capacities even after five adsorption⁻desorption cycles. With these impressive properties, PTT nanoparticles are very promising materials in the fields of water-treatment and precious metals recovery.

Functionalized Sugarcane Bagasse for U(VI) Adsorption from Acid and Alkaline Conditions

The highly efficient removal of uranium from mine tailings effluent, radioactive wastewater and enrichment from seawater is of great significance for the development of nuclear industry. In this work, we prepared an efficient U(VI) adsorbent by EDTA modified sugarcane bagasse (MESB) with a simple process. The prepared adsorbent preserves high adsorptive capacity for UO22+ (pH 3.0) and uranyl complexes, such as UO2(OH)+, (UO2)2(OH)22+ and (UO2)3(OH)5+ (pH 4.0 and pH 5.0) and good repeatability in acidic environment. The maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) at pH 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 is 578.0, 925.9 and 1394.1 mg/g and the adsorption capacity loss is only 7% after five cycles. With the pH from 3.0 to 5.0, the inhibitive effects of Na+ and K+ decreased but increased of Mg2+ and Ca2+. MESB also exhibits good adsorption for [UO2(CO3)3]4- at pH 8.3 from 10 mg/L to 3.3 μg/L. Moreover, MESB could effectively extract U(VI) from simulated seawater in the presence of other metals ions. This work provided a general and efficient uranyl enriched material for nuclear industry.

Enhancing adsorption of U(VI) onto EDTA modified L. cylindrica using epichlorohydrin and ethylenediamine as a bridge

Benefiting from strong coordination ability and unique vascular structure, EDTA modified L. cylindrica opens up an alternative way for uranium recovery from seawater. However, limitations, such as poor adsorption capacity and slow adsorption rate due to low graft ratio of EDTA via one-step esterification block its practical application. Here, a strategy for increasing the graft ratio is proposed in order to improve the adsorption performance. The strategy initially involves immobilization of epichlorohydrin (EPI) onto L. cylindrica and then ethylenediamine (EDA) is introduced via facile ring-opening reaction. EPI and EDA serve as a bridge between L. cylindrica and EDTA. The graft ratio is promoted (15.01 to 21.44%) contributing to the smaller steric hindrance of EPI and EDA than EDTA and improvement in adsorption performance. In addition, the adsorbent prepared by the new strategy exhibits excellent adsorption properties in simulated seawater.

Fabrication and characterization of KGM-based FMBO-containing aerogels for removal of arsenite in aqueous solution
