Chitosan-the miracle biomaterial as detection and diminishing mediating agent for heavy metal ions: A mini review

Proliferation of heavy metal ions as aquatic pollutants has been a matter of growing concern now a days. Several anthropogenic activities have fueled higher concentration of heavy metal ions in aquatic bodies above threshold values, as set by World Health Organization. Of late, chitosan for its exquisite properties has been widely used in tackling this burning problem of aquatic pollution caused by heavy metal ions. Accordingly, this mini review appraises the detection as well as diminution activities where chitosan plays the major contributing part. Starting from the intrinsic properties of chitosan, the detection strategy via chitosan composites is comprehensively delineated. Likewise, the removal activities via chitosan mediating agents are also overviewed, followed by future recommendations. It is believed that this mini review will give researchers a brief appraisal of two prominent activities related to controlling of heavy metal ion pollution.

Recent Developments in Chitosan-Based Adsorbents for the Removal of Pollutants from Aqueous Environments

The quality of water is continuously under threat as increasing concentrations of pollutants escape into the aquatic environment. However, these issues can be alleviated by adsorbing pollutants onto adsorbents. Chitosan and its composites are attracting considerable interest as environmentally acceptable adsorbents and have the potential to remove many of these contaminants. In this review the development of chitosan-based adsorbents is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the extraction of chitin from seafood wastes, followed by its conversion to chitosan, the properties of chitosan are described. Then, the emerging chitosan/carbon-based materials, including magnetic chitosan and chitosan combined with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, biochar, and activated carbon and also chitosan-silica composites are introduced. The applications of these materials in the removal of various heavy metal ions, including Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and different cationic and anionic dyes, phenol and other organic molecules, such as antibiotics, are reviewed, compared and discussed. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics are then highlighted and followed by details on the mechanisms of adsorption and the role of the chitosan and the carbon or silica supports. Based on the reviewed papers, it is clear, that while some challenges remain, chitosan-based materials are emerging as promising adsorbents.

Selective and low temperature transition metal intercalation in layered tellurides

Layered materials embrace rich intercalation reactions to accommodate high concentrations of foreign species within their structures, and find many applications spanning from energy storage, ion exchange to secondary batteries. Light alkali metals are generally most easily intercalated due to their light mass, high charge/volume ratio and in many cases strong reducing properties. An evolving area of materials chemistry, however, is to capture metals selectively, which is of technological and environmental significance but rather unexplored. Here we show that the layered telluride T₂PTe₂ (T=Ti, Zr) displays exclusive insertion of transition metals (for example, Cd, Zn) as opposed to alkali cations, with tetrahedral coordination preference to tellurium. Interestingly, the intercalation reactions proceed in solid state and at surprisingly low temperatures (for example, 80 °C for cadmium in Ti₂PTe₂). The current method of controlling selectivity provides opportunities in the search for new materials for various applications that used to be possible only in a liquid.

The intercalation of metal ions in layered structures has a wide variety of applications, from energy storage to environmental remediation. Here the authors report that layered telluride structures can selectively bind transition metals and this intercalation can occur in solid state at mild conditions.

Coalesced chitosan activated carbon composite for batch and fixed-bed adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes

A renewable waste tea activated carbon (WTAC) was coalesced with chitosan to form composite adsorbent used for waste water treatment. Adsorptive capacities of crosslinked chitosan beads (CCB) and its composite (WTAC-CCB) for Methylene blue dye (MB) and Acid blue 29 (AB29) were evaluated through batch and fixed-bed studies. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherms were tested for the adsorption process and the experimental data were best fitted by Langmuir model and least by Freundlich model; the suitability of fitness was adjudged by the Chi-square (χ(2)) and Marquadt's percent standard deviation error functions. Judging by the values of χ(2), pseudo-second-order reaction model best described the adsorption process than pseudo-first-order kinetic model for MB/AB29 on both adsorbents. After five cycles of adsorbents desorption test, more than 50% WTAC-CCB adsorption efficiency was retained while CCB had <20% adsorption efficiency. The results of this study revealed that WTAC-CCB composite is a promising adsorbent for treatment of anionic and cationic dyes in effluent wastewaters.

Alginate fibers as photocatalyst immobilizing agents applied in hybrid photocatalytic/ultrafiltration water treatment processes

Ca alginate polymer fibers were developed to effectively disperse and stabilize an efficient photocatalyst such as AEROXIDE(®) TiO(2) P25 in their matrix. The biopolymer/TiO(2) fibers were prepared and tested either in the hydrogel non-porous form or in the highly porous aerogel form prepared by sc-CO(2) drying. Batch photocatalytic experiments showed that the porous, Ca alginate/TiO(2) fibers, exhibited high efficiency for the removal of methyl orange (MO) from polluted water. In addition, their high porosity and surface area led to high MO degradation rate which was faster than that observed not only for their non-porous analogs but also of the bulk P25 TiO(2) powder. Specifically, 90% removal for 20 μM MO was achieved within 220 min for the porous sc-CO(2) dried fibers while for their non-porous analogs at 325 min. The corresponding value (at 60 μM MO) for the porous sc-CO(2) dried fibers was 140 min over 240 min for the AEROXIDE(®) TiO(2) P25 as documented in the literature. Furthermore the composite alginate/photocatalyst porous fibers were combined with TiO(2) membranes in a continuous flow, hybrid photocatalytic/ultrafiltration water treatment process that led to a three fold enhancement of the MO removal efficiency at 400 ml of 20 μM MO total treated volume and to dilution rather than condensation in the membrane retentate as commonly observed in filtration processes. Furthermore the permeability of the photocatalytic membrane was enhanced in the presence of the fibers by almost 20%. This performance is achieved with 26 cm(2) and 31 cm(2) of membrane and stabilized photocatalyst surfaces respectively and in this context there is plenty of room for the up-scaling of both membranes and fibers and the achievement of much higher water yields since the methods applied for the development of the involved materials (CVD and dry-wet phase inversion in a spinning set-up) are easily up-scalable and are not expected to add significant cost to the proposed water treatment process.

Reactive sorption of mercury(II) on to poly(m-phenylenediamine) microparticles

Poly(m-phenylenediamine) (PmPD) microparticles, from the monomer with two amino groups, were synthesized through chemical oxidation, and the strong adsorbability of mercury ions on to PmPD was systematically examined. The results revealed a rapid adsorption process with an equilibrium time of 30 minutes. Also, the adsorption behaviour showed that the adsorption kinetics was in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order equation. The maximum uptake capacity for mercury (Q(max)) reached approximately 955 mg g(-1) at 0.02 M NaNO3 and 25 degrees C, which decreased appreciably with the increasing of salt concentration. The amount of mercury sorbed at equilibrium steadily increased as the temperature rose from 25 to 45 degrees C, which can be indicative of an endothermic process. The pH value of the solution seemed to exhibit little influence on the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanisms, including Hg2+ complexation with nitrogen and ion exchange between Hg2+ and H+ on PmPD chains, are proposed on the basis of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.

Separation Strategies for Processing of Dilute Liquid Streams

Processing of dilute liquid streams in the industries like food, agro-, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environment, and so forth needs special strategy for the separation and purification of the desired product and for environment friendly disposal of the waste stream. The separation strategy adopted to achieve the goal is extremely important from economic as well as from environmental point of view. In the present paper we have reviewed the various aspects of some selected universal separation strategies such as adsorption, membrane separation, electrophoresis, chromatographic separation, and electroosmosis that are exercised for processing of dilute liquid streams.
