Abstract
Self-assembly of colloidal particles offers an attractive bottom-up approach to functional materials. Current design strategies for colloidal assemblies are mostly based on thermodynamically controlled principles and lack autonomous behavior. The next advance in the properties of colloidal assemblies will come from coupling these structures to out-of-equilibrium chemical reaction networks furnishing them with autonomous and dynamic behavior. This, however, constitutes a major challenge of carefully modulating the interparticle potentials on a temporal circuit program and avoiding kinetic trapping and irreversible aggregation. Herein, we report the coupling of a fuel-driven DNA-based enzymatic reaction network (ERN) to micron-sized colloidal particles to achieve their transient co-assembly. The ERN operating on the molecular level transiently releases an Output strand which links two DNA functionalized microgel particles together into co-assemblies with a programmable assembly lifetime. The system generates minimal waste and recovers all components of the ERN after the consumption of the ATP fuel. The system can be reactivated by addition of new fuel as shown for up to three cycles. The design can be applied to organize other building blocks into hierarchical structures and materials with advanced biomimetic properties.

Abstract
To enrich the properties of chitosan (CS) and improve its applicability, we prepared carboxymethyl-chitosan (CMCS) by carboxymethylation and developed a layer-by-layer assembly (LBL) by the ultrasonic nebulization-assisted technique. The degree of carboxymethylation was 42.20% and the structure of CMCS was characterized using Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The ultrasonic nebulization-assisted LBL (UNLBL) edible coating was developed based on an inner negatively CMCS charged layer and an external positively charged CS layer. As compared to conventional LBL (CLBL) assembly, the greater thickness, stronger mechanical properties and lower water vapor permeability were detected in UNLBL assembly. Through an untargeted metabolomic analysis and real-time quantitative PCR, it was evident that ultrasonic nebulization-assisted LBL assembly is a promising alternative for promoting phenylpropanoid metabolism in strawberries.

Abstract
In this study, we present hybrid microgels made of starch nanoparticles (SNPs) and poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) [p(NIPAM)]. SNPs were formed through nanoprecipitation. Hybrid microgels were prepared by surfactant-free precipitation polymerization (SFPP) or in the presence of surfactant precipitation polymerization (PP) at different NIPAM/SNP ratios. Dynamic light scattering results of hybrid microgels synthesized by SFPP revealed changes in volume phase transition temperature according to SNP amount, where the increase in the hydrophilic content caused small shifts in the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), reaching nearly 35 °C. Colloidal stability was improved with the SNP content, leading to increased stability because of the hydroxyl groups. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicates a core-shell structure above the LCST, where SNPs chains cover a p(NIPAM) core. Swelling curves experimentally obtained were analyzed using the Flory-Rehner model, where the interaction parameter (χ) has been modeled either by a series expansion of the swelling ratio or by a Hill-like equation for a cooperative thermotropic transition.

Abstract
Nanosized crosslinked polymer networks, named as nanogels, are playing an increasingly important role in a diverse range of applications by virtue of their porous structures, large surface area, good biocompatibility and responsiveness to internal and/or external chemico-physical stimuli. Recently, a variety of carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon quantum dots, graphene/graphene oxide nanosheets, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and nanodiamonds, have been embedded into responsive polymer nanogels, in order to integrate the unique electro-optical properties of carbon nanomaterials with the merits of nanogels into a single hybrid nanogel system for improvement of their applications in nanomedicine. A vast number of studies have been pursued to explore the applications of carbon-based hybrid nanogels in biomedical areas for biosensing, bioimaging, and smart drug carriers with combinatorial therapies and/or theranostic ability. New synthetic methods and structures have been developed to prepare carbon-based hybrid nanogels with versatile properties and functions. In this review, we summarize the latest developments and applications and address the future perspectives of these carbon-based hybrid nanogels in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Nanogels are nanosized crosslinked polymer networks capable of absorbing large quantities of water. Specifically, smart nanogels are interesting because of their ability to respond to biomedically relevant changes like pH, temperature, etc. In the last few decades, hybrid nanogels or composites have been developed to overcome the ever increasing demand for new materials in this field. In this context, a hybrid refers to nanogels combined with different polymers and/or with nanoparticles such as plasmonic, magnetic, and carbonaceous nanoparticles, among others. Research activities are focused nowadays on using multifunctional hybrid nanogels in nanomedicine, not only as drug carriers but also as imaging and theranostic agents. In this review, we will describe nanogels, particularly in the form of composites or hybrids applied in nanomedicine.
