Improved medical student perception of ultrasound using a paired anatomy teaching assistant and clinician teaching model

Radiology education for medical students: a qualitative exploration of educational topics, teaching methods and future strategies

BACKGROUND

Imaging techniques play a central role in modern medicine and therefore it would be beneficial for all medical students to incorporate radiology education in medical school curricula. However, a formal undergraduate radiology curriculum with well-defined learning objectives remains lacking in The Netherlands. This study aims to qualitatively ascertain opinions from clinicians (radiologists and non-radiologists) with regard to radiology education in the medical school curricula, including topics, teaching methods and strategies.

METHODS

A qualitative study with in-depth semi-structured interviews was conducted. Inclusion was carried out until saturation was achieved, after which 2 additional interviews were held. Interviews were conducted using open-ended questions, following a predefined topic list. The constant comparative method was applied in order to include new questions when unexpected topics arose during the interviews. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded using a thematic analysis approach. Codes were organized into categories and themes by discussion between the researchers.

RESULTS

Forty-four clinicians were interviewed (8 radiologists, 36 non-radiologists). The three main themes that were derived from the interviews were: (1) expectations of indispensable knowledge and skills on radiology, (2) organization of radiology education within the medical curriculum and (3) promising educational innovations for the radiology curriculum. The qualitative study design provides more in-depth knowledge on clinicians' views on educational topics.

CONCLUSIONS

The themes and statements of this study provided new insights into educational methods, timing of radiology education and new topics to teach. More research is needed to gain consensus on these subjects and inclusion of the opinion of medical students with regard to radiology education is needed.

Student Ultrasound Education, Current Views and Controversies; Who Should be Teaching?

Acquiring diagnostic ultrasound competencies and skills is crucial in modern health care, and achieving the practical experience is vital in developing the necessary anatomy interpretation and scan acquisition skills. However, traditional teaching methods may not be sufficient to provide hands-on practice, which is essential for this skill acquisition. This paper explores various modalities and instructors involved in ultrasound education to identify the most effective approaches. The field of ultrasound instruction is enriched by the diverse roles of physicians, anatomists, peer tutors, and sonographers. All these healthcare professionals can inspire and empower the next generation of ultrasound practitioners with continuous training and support. Physicians bring their clinical expertise to the table, while anatomists enhance the understanding of anatomical knowledge through ultrasound integration. Peer tutors, often medical students, provide a layer of social congruence and motivation to the learning process. Sonographers provide intensive practical experience and structured learning plans to students. By combining different instructors and teaching methods, success can be achieved in ultrasound education. An ultrasound curriculum organized by experts in the field can lead to more efficient use of resources and better learning outcomes. Empowering students through peer-assisted learning can also ease the burden on faculty. Every instructor must receive comprehensive didactic training to ensure high-quality education in diagnostic ultrasound.

Ultrasound Incorporation in Gross Anatomy Labs in a Master of Medical Sciences Program: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Student Performance and Perception

OBJECTIVES

Teaching ultrasound imaging is on the rise in undergraduate medical anatomy education. However, there is little research exploring the use of ultrasound in preparatory graduate programs. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of ultrasound imaging inclusion in a graduate gross anatomy course.

METHODS

Master of Medical Sciences students were enrolled in a prosection-based anatomy course that included pinned cadaver stations and an ultrasound station. Using ultrasound, teaching assistants imaged volunteers demonstrating anatomical structures students previously learned at cadaver stations. Students answered one ultrasound image question on each practical exam and were asked to participate in a pre- and post-course survey. Student practical and lecture exam scores and final course grades from the 2022 cohort were compared to a historical control cohort from 2021 via statistical analysis, including a survey administered to the 2022 cohort.

RESULTS

Two hundred students from the 2021 cohort and 164 students from the 2022 cohort participated in this study. Students in the 2022 cohort had significantly higher scores in 1 of the 5 practical exams (P < .05, d = .289), and 2 of the 5 written exams (P < .05, d = .207), (P < .05, d = .311). Survey data revealed increased (P < .05, d = 1.203) learning outcome achievement from pre-survey to post-survey in the intervention cohort. Students who correctly answered the ultrasound question performed significantly better on practical's 3 (P < .05) and 4 (P < .05) than those who missed the ultrasound question.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that ultrasound imaging in a cadaver lab is beneficial to graduate students' learning and understanding of gross anatomy.

The effect of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound on students' learning outcomes and satisfaction in echocardiography education: a pilot randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Effective teaching methods are needed to improve students' abilities in hand-eye coordination and understanding of cardiac anatomy in echocardiography education. Simulation devices have emerged as innovative teaching tools and exhibited distinctive advantages due to their ability to provide vivid and visual learning experiences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound on students' learning outcomes and satisfaction in echocardiography education.

METHODS

The study included 18 first-year clinical medical students with no prior echocardiography training. After randomization, they underwent a pre-test to assess basic knowledge. Following this, the students were divided into two groups: traditional teaching (traditional group) and simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound (digital group). Each group received 60 min of instruction. Post-tests were assigned to students at two different time points: immediately after the lecture, and one week later (referred to as post-tests 1, and 2). In addition, anonymous questionnaires were distributed to students after class to investigate their satisfaction with teaching.

RESULTS

Both groups showed significant improvement in their scores on post-test 1 compared to pre-test (traditional group: from 33.1 ± 8.8 to 48.1 ± 13.1, P = 0.034 vs. digital group: from 35.0 ± 6.7 to 58.0 ± 13.2, P = 0.008). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in several post-test comparisons. Student satisfaction ratings revealed that the digital group experienced significantly greater satisfaction in areas such as subject interest, teaching style, course alignment, and interaction compared to the traditional group. Additionally, 80% of the digital group strongly endorsed the use of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound for echocardiography teaching, highlighting its effectiveness.

CONCLUSIONS

Simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound may improve students' understanding of echocardiography and satisfaction with the course. Our study provides evidence supporting the use of simulation teaching devices in medical education. Further research is needed to explore the long-term impact of this teaching method on students' learning outcomes and its integration into the medical curriculum.

Body painting, ultrasound, clinical examination, and peer-teaching: A student-centered approach to enhance musculoskeletal anatomy learning

The presented course, established 2016 as a compulsory elective for 22nd-year bachelor medical students, aimed to enhance deep learning of upper and lower limb anatomy from a clinical perspective by a maximum of student-centered activities combining hands-on skills training with team-learning. Three cohorts (in total 60 students) participated in this study. Students rotated through body painting, ultrasound, and clinical investigation supervised by faculty or an experienced clinician. Teams of 3-4 students prepared presentations on clinical anatomy and pathological conditions, which by teacher- and peer assessments on average achieved >85% (mean 17.8/20 points ± 1.06). After each activity session, the students reported their learning experience through a reflective diary. Fifty students (83%) evaluated the course by a voluntary anonymous questionnaire combining Likert-type scale and free-text questions to assess, predominantly, perception of course activities and their perceived influence on learning anatomy. Journal reports and questionnaires revealed that the students highly valued the course, and 92% (29 females, 17 males) rated group work satisfying or well-perceived. The highest appreciation achieved ultrasound followed by clinical examination and body painting, which one third proposed to integrate into the regular dissection course. All students recommended the course to their younger peers. This course was feasible to integrate in the pre-existing curriculum. Limiting factors to offer this elective course to more students are availability of clinical teachers, technical equipment, and education rooms. Being student-directed tasks, body painting and reflective diary-writing would be feasible to implement without additional faculty, which we recommend to educators for student engagement activation.

Integration of ultrasound simulation to improve medical student knowledge and satisfaction on the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship

BACKGROUND

There has been increased use of ultrasound in contemporary medical education. Students tend to report a higher sense of satisfaction when ultrasound is incorporated into medical education, but little is known about whether its use leads to an improvement in medical knowledge acquisition independent of the ultrasound skill. In addition, there is no consensus among obstetrics and gynecology clerkships on the most effective way to incorporate ultrasound into the clerkship curriculum.

OBJECTIVE

This project described a method to integrate ultrasound simulation into an obstetrics and gynecology clerkship curriculum. Our hypothesis was that the incorporation of ultrasound simulation in the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship curriculum will lead to an increase in standardized assessments of obstetrics and gynecology knowledge.

STUDY DESIGN

A prepost study at a single institution with multiple methods design was employed. Of note, 10 high-yield pathology topics commonly tested on the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics quizzes and National Board of Medical Examiners examinations were summarized into study sheets and associated with a representative ultrasound simulation module. All students were provided access to the summary sheets. Students with instruction in ultrasound simulation consisted of the postintervention group and were compared with students that did not have ultrasound simulation (preintervention group). Quiz and examination scores were compared between the groups. In addition, students who accessed the ultrasound simulator were given a survey at the end of their rotation to obtain qualitative information regarding satisfaction and the incorporation of ultrasound into the clerkship curriculum.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in quiz or examination scores between students who had access to the ultrasound simulation and those who did not. Most students found the integration of ultrasound simulation into the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship to be beneficial, to enhance their learning, to boost their confidence in ultrasound skills, and to be a potential substitute for clinical ultrasounds during the rotation.

CONCLUSION

Integration of ultrasound simulation into obstetrics and gynecology clerkships and medical school education is understudied but can be a valuable educational tool. The incorporation of ultrasound into the medical education system is a topic of current studies. This study found that integration was viewed favorably by students, although integration was not associated with an improvement in medical knowledge measured via quiz and examination performance. Our research provided students with a standardized ultrasound education experience, which improved student satisfaction with the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship but did not correlate to increased demonstrated medical knowledge and understanding of examinations. Moving forward, student participants provided various suggestions on how we can continue to enrich medical students' education with the implementation of ultrasound.

Snapshot of ultrasound imaging in basic anatomy and physiology teaching in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland: perceptions, obstacles, and solutions

We have used ultrasound imaging and technology as a tool for nonclinical teaching of basic physiological concepts for several years and are aware anecdotally that only a few others in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (UK/ROI) are also using ultrasound with this intention in physiology and anatomy teaching. To better understand what areas ultrasound is used for by others, along with what barriers might exist to its use, we reached out to colleagues in UK/ROI institutions instructing on anatomy and physiology courses by asking them to complete a survey regarding their experiences. Relatively few institutions (9%) reported using the technology in this way but covered physiology and anatomy teaching in most major body systems. The perception of responding educators overall is that, overwhelmingly, ultrasound offers a useful addition to the teaching of physiology and anatomy and is very popular with students. Barriers to its implementation were identified, including unfamiliarity with equipment and potential uses. Lack of funding for equipment and staff, issues with class sizes, and lack of curriculum time were also identified. Despite these potential impediments, most nonusers were interested in finding out about the uses of ultrasound as a teaching tool. We conclude that the teaching community would benefit from wider dissemination of local practices.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We surveyed UK and Republic of Ireland institutions to establish the extent of ultrasound use in teaching undergraduate modules with significant anatomy or physiology content. Responses indicate that although ultrasound is used for a wide variety of systems, only a small proportion of courses use ultrasound for teaching. There is widespread interest in its use, with the main barriers being unfamiliarity with potential uses and the technology. We endorse further dissemination of this teaching practice.

The Use of Ultrasound in Undergraduate Medical Anatomy Education: a Systematic Review with Narrative Synthesis

This systematic review aimed to synthesize the literature on how ultrasound is currently used in anatomy education within medical schools. A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and Educational Resources Information Centre was conducted. Thirty-four relevant unique articles were included from the 1,272 identified from the databases and analyzed via narrative synthesis. Thematic analysis generated two domain summaries: "Successful Aspects of Ultrasound Teaching" and "Barriers to Implementation," each with additional subthemes, aimed to help educators inform best teaching practices from the current evidence base in this field.

Adaptation of an anatomy graduate course in ultrasound imaging from in-person to live, remote instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic

Health concerns during the Covid-19 pandemic required the adaptation of a lecture-laboratory course in ultrasound imaging for graduate students from an in-person to a live, remote learning format. The adaptation of in-person lectures to live, remote delivery was achieved by using videoconferencing. The adaptation of in-person laboratory sessions to live, remote instruction was achieved in the first half of the course by providing a hand-held ultrasound instrument to each student who performed self-scanning at their remote locations, while the instructor provided live instruction using videoconferencing. In the second half of the course, the students transitioned to using cart-based, hospital-type instruments and self-scanning in the ultrasound laboratory on campus. The aim of this study was to measure the success of this adaptation to the course by comparing assessment scores of students in the live, remote course with assessment scores of students in the in-person course offered in the previous year. There were no statistically significant differences in the assessment scores of students in the two courses. The adaptation of a course in ultrasound imaging from an in-person to a live, remote learning format during the Covid-19 pandemic described here suggests that contrary to the prevailing view, ultrasound imaging can be taught to students without in-person instruction. The adapted course can serve as a model for teaching ultrasound where instructors and learners are physically separated by constraints other than health concerns during a pandemic.

"Fun slipping into the doctor's role"-The relationship between sonoanatomy teaching and professional identity formation before and during the Covid-19 pandemic

The various psychological dimensions of professional identity formation (PIF) are an important aspect of the study course for undergraduate medical students. Anatomical learning environments have been repeatedly shown to play a critical role in forming such an identity; however, relevance of PIF during sonoanatomical training remains underexplored. At the end of their basic anatomy studies, third-semester medical students took part in a four-day block course on anatomy and imaging. Anatomical content was revised in small groups using peer teaching and imaging methods, including one hour of hands-on sonoanatomy sessions each day. On-site sonoanatomy was identified as an excellent format to support students' transition from the pre-clinical to clinical phase as medical experts-to-be. Students enjoyed practical exercises and the clinical input, which increased their interest in the medical profession and their academic studies. This study further examined the effects of the transition into an online-only format, necessitated by the current Covid-19 pandemic. A comparison was made between the quantitative and qualitative evaluation data, and the written results of examinations of several on-site (n = 1096, mean age = 22.4 years ± 2.18), and online-only cohorts (n = 230, mean age = 22.6 years ± 2.21). The online-only transition led to a reduction of all PIF-related variables measured, losing identity-related variables, increasing students' stress levels, and reducing their long-term academic performance. Together, this study demonstrates presence of PIF in undergraduate sonoanatomy teaching, and cautions against the uncritical online-only substitution of hands-on learning environments.

Ultrasonography in undergraduate medical education: a comprehensive review and the education program implemented at Jichi Medical University

The concept of point-of-care ultrasound has been widely accepted owing to the development of portable ultrasound systems and growing body of evidence concerning its extensive utility. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that training to use this modality be included in undergraduate medical education. Training in ultrasonography helps medical students learn basic subjects such as anatomy and physiology, improve their physical examination skills, and acquire diagnostic and procedural skills. Technological advances such as simulators, affordable handheld devices, and tele-ultrasound systems can facilitate undergraduate ultrasound education. Several reports have indicated that some medical schools have integrated ultrasound training into their undergraduate medical curricula. Jichi Medical University in Japan has been providing medical students with ultrasound education to fulfill part of its mission to provide medical care to rural areas. Vertical integration of ultrasound education into a curriculum seems reasonable to ensure skill retention and improvement. However, several issues have hampered the integration of ultrasound into medical education, including a lack of trained faculty, the need to recruit human models, requisition of ultrasound machines for training, and limited curricular space; proposed solutions include peer teaching, students as trained simulated patients, the development of more affordable handheld devices, and a flipped classroom approach with access to an e-learning platform, respectively. A curriculum should be developed through multidisciplinary and bottom-up student-initiated approaches. Formulating national and international consensuses concerning the milestones and curricula can promote the incorporation of ultrasound training into undergraduate medical education at the national level.

Issues in Teaching Vascular Anatomy: Thoughts and Suggestions from the Clinician's Point of View

The role of anatomy in modern curricula is under reform due to competency of other rapidly evolving subjects and the rapid evolution of several practical aspects and applications dictating modernization of teaching methods as well as of teaching demands. Moreover, modern practice of medicine has put the arterial and vascular system in the center of numerous minimally invasive techniques. Therefore, regardless of their specialty, most doctors should have a very clear and precise knowledge of the vascular anatomy and the basic access techniques from the early years. This viewpoint commentary reflects the experience of the two authors in applying the principles and content of surgical vascular anatomy in undergraduate anatomy teaching and discusses the rationale of this. Moreover, it is suggested that cadaveric dissections should be modified with emphasis on standard surgical vascular exposures and the multidisciplinary teaching of vascular anatomy as a means not only to gain optimal long-term knowledge retention, but also to emphasize through realistic examples on the practical clinical value of vascular anatomy.

Introduction of ultrasound-based living anatomy into the medical curriculum: a survey on medical students' perceptions

Background

Traditional anatomy teaching methods are based on the models and cadaveric dissections, providing fixed views of the anatomical structures. However, in the last few years, the emerging concept of ultrasound-based teaching in anatomy has started to gain ground among medical curricula. This study aims to evaluate the integration of ultrasound as an adjunct tool to traditional anatomy teaching methods and explore students’ perceptions of whether ultrasound-based teaching enhances their interest and knowledge of anatomy. A cross-sectional study was carried out among the students of the 6-year undergraduate entry (MD) and 4-year graduate entry (MBBS) program of the University of Nicosia. A questionnaire was distributed to them after the delivery of several twenty minutes ultrasound sessions by an expert in the field during anatomy practicals. The data were analyzed utilizing SPSS software, and the statistical significance was determined as p value < 0.05.

Results

107 MD and 42 MBBS students completed the questionnaire. Both groups agreed that their ultrasound-based learning experience was good or excellent (79.4% MD students; 92.9% MBBS students), that it enhanced their knowledge of anatomy (68.2% MD students; 90.5% MBBS students) and boosted their confidence regarding their examination skills practice (69.2% MD students; 85.7% MBBS students). Although most students desired more time allocated to the ultrasound station (72% MD students; 85.7% MBBS students), they believed that ultrasound-based teaching is a necessary adjunct to the traditional teaching methods of anatomy (89.7% MD students; 92.9% MBBS students).

Conclusions

Overall, MBBS students were more confident about the benefits of ultrasound-based teaching. Most of the students agreed that cross-sectional sessions of traditional teaching and ultrasound-based teaching strengthened their knowledge of anatomy and enhanced their confidence concerning their clinical examination skills. Medical schools should embrace the advantages that ultrasound-based teaching offers in order future doctors to be qualified to utilize ultrasound for procedural and diagnostical purposes.

Team-Based Ultrasound Objective Structured Practice Examination (OSPE) in the Anatomy Course

The clinical use of ultrasound has dramatically increased, necessitating early ultrasound education and the development of new tools in ultrasound training and assessment. The goal of this study was to devise a novel low-resource examination that tested the anatomical knowledge and technical skill of early undergraduate medical students in a gross anatomy course. The team-based ultrasound objective structured practice examination (OSPE) was created as a method for assessing practical ultrasound competencies, anatomical knowledge, and non-technical skills such as teamwork and professionalism. The examination utilized a rotation of students through four team roles as they scanned different areas of the body. This station-based examination required four models and four instructors, and tested ultrasound skills in the heart, abdominal vessels, abdominal organs, and neck regions. A Likert scale survey assessed student attitudes toward the examination. Survey data from participants (n = 46) were examined along with OSPE examination grades (n = 52). Mean and standard deviations were calculated for examination items and survey responses. Student grades were high in both technical (96.5%). and professional (96.5%) competencies with structure identification scoring the lowest (93.8%). There were no statistical differences between performances in each of the body regions being scanned. The survey showed that students deemed the examination to be fair and effective. In addition, students agreed that the examination motivated them to practice ultrasound. The team-based OSPE was found to be an efficient and student-favored method for evaluating integrated ultrasound competencies, anatomical knowledge, team-work, and professional attributes.

Implementing ultrasound sessions to highlight living anatomy for large medical student cohorts

Background

There is an intrinsic link between radiology and anatomy and the importance of being able to convert knowledge from 3D structure to 2D image, and vice versa. Medical students must learn how to use anatomical knowledge to interpret radiological images, and with the increasing use of point-of-care ultrasound in clinical practice, the ability to interpret ultrasound scans is becoming more of a core skill for graduating doctors.

Rationale

Several recent systematic reviews of the literature have been undertaken showing the benefits of incorporating ultrasound in anatomy teaching, including appreciation of the dynamic nature of living anatomy, better understanding of anatomical structure, and improved motivation to study. However, there is a lack of consensus in the way ultrasound teaching should be incorporated into undergraduate medical anatomy.

Approach

This article reflects on a pilot of integrating ultrasound into the medical undergraduate anatomy teaching in the School of Anatomy at the University of Bristol. It shares the experience and how some of the challenges cited in the literature have been approached.

Recommendation

To help others negotiate the challenges of implementing this valuable teaching experience, a 'Six Step Model' for developing a live ultrasound pilot for undergraduate medical anatomy is offered: Expertise, Education, Ethics, Environment, Equipment, Enlist.

Importance of Ultrasound Education in Undergraduate Medical Curriculum: A Survey Study Based on First-Year Medical Students' Perception of the 6-Year Doctor of Medicine Program of the University of Nicosia Medical School in Cyprus

Ultrasound imaging modality is a tool used in clinical practice and is being introduced gradually in the undergraduate curriculum of several medical schools worldwide. This study aims to assess medical students' perception regarding the integration of ultrasound training as part of undergraduate education. A questionnaire was given to first-year medical students after a 2-hour-long session, which was developed to introduce them in the fundamental physics theory and function of ultrasound equipment in the clinical practice. Analysis of the results indicated that students acknowledged that ultrasound training would improve their knowledge of internal medicine (P = 0.027) and of different diagnostic modalities (P = 0.019), and enhance their medical decision making (P = 0.0004). Moreover, students found beneficial the ultrasound education regarding correlating clinical knowledge with basic sciences (P = 0.0004). The study pointed out that the majority of first-year students have the opinion that the integration of ultrasound training in the medical program is valuable in medical education and patient care. However, work is needed to determine how to provide an optimal learning environment and to assess the competency of the training sessions.

Confidence Level and Ability of Medical Students to Identify Abdominal Structures After Integrated Ultrasound Sessions

Purpose

Determine the confidence level and ability of first year medical students to identify abdominal structures using a wireless portable ultrasound scanner.

Methods

The students were assessed for their confidence and ability to perform abdominal ultrasound. The 5-point Likert survey included questions on their perception about ultrasound as a resource for learning anatomy, physical examination skills, and the quality of the pre-session instructions. Data was also recorded by the faculty about the students’ ultrasound skills and confidence. Goodman and Kruskal's gamma was used to demonstrate an association between the students’ ability to identify the structures and the self-reported student confidence level.

Results

Most of the students had confidence and were able to identify the liver, kidney, and urinary bladder, while almost half of them needed faculty help them to identify the inferior vena cava and aorta. The spleen and gall bladder were the most difficult to locate even for the very confident students. The perception of supervising faculty was that the confidence level was low in most of the students and only 13–20% of students felt “very confident” about performing ultrasound. Almost 37% needed encouragement and support and almost 10% of the students were not willing to try to locate difficult organs. Some students started locating the ureteric jet and portal vein. Most of the students agreed that ultrasound is an excellent resource for learning anatomy and physical examination skills. All students suggested having more ultrasound sessions.

Conclusion

Most of the students feel confident about performing ultrasound and they perceive that ultrasound can enhance their basic sciences and physical examination skills.

Ultrasound Curricula of Student Education in Europe: Summary of the Experience

Background Despite the increasing role of ultrasound, structured ultrasound teaching is only slowly being integrated into the curricula of medical schools and universities all over Europe. Aim To survey the current situation at European universities regarding the integration of ultrasound in student medical education and to report on models of student ultrasound training from selected European universities. Methods A questionnaire survey focusing on the implementation of curricular ultrasound education was sent out to the 28 presidents of the national ultrasound societies of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), who were asked to distribute the questionnaires to the medical universities of their countries. Results Overall, 53 questionnaires were returned from 46 universities in 17 European countries. In most of the universities (40/46 universities, 87%), the theoretical background of ultrasound is taught. However, in only a minority of universities is ultrasound integrated in anatomy courses (8/46 universities, 17%) or basic science courses (16/46 universities, 35%). Practical skills in ultrasound are taught in 56% of the universities (26/46 universities) and tested in a practical exam in seven of the responding universities (15%). The number of hours in which ultrasound was taught ranged from one to 58 (mean, seven). The respondents reported that lack of time and limited faculty funding were major hurdles. Conclusion According to our survey, only a minority of European universities has integrated ultrasound into the preclinical curriculum thus far. Future EFSUMB initiatives will continue to promote the introduction of ultrasound as an integrative part of the core curriculum of student medical education, and the preparation of proper teaching material.

Seeing with Sound: How Ultrasound Is Changing the Way We Look at Anatomy

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and their rebounding echoes to capture live images of the structures beneath the skin. Thanks to recent technological advances, contemporary ultrasound machines offer excellent image resolution packaged in smaller, highly portable devices, which has allowed ultrasound to expand into new areas, both within the hospital as well as across non-traditional settings. Ultrasound is an incredibly powerful visualization tool in medicine, allowing physicians to safely see and interrogate the most relevant parts of their patient's internal anatomy instantly. Point-of-care ultrasound, a focused ultrasound evaluation performed at the patient's bedside, is now common across medical specialties, encompassing a vast array of diagnostic, procedural and screening applications. The impressive expansion of point-of-care ultrasound has resulted in an increased demand for ultrasound training earlier during medical school. As a non-invasive and non-destructive way to see inside the living body, ultrasound is an ideal tool to teach anatomy. It allows both medical and non-medical students the ability to improve their understanding and retention of anatomical form and function. The widespread and still expanding use of ultrasound in healthcare today, as well as its adoption into the anatomy classroom, is a testament to the power of ultrasound for achieving real-time visualization of the hidden aspects of our bodies.
