Abstract
Rhenium chalcohalide cluster compounds are a photoluminescent family of mixed-anion chalcohalide cluster materials. Here we report the new material Rb6Re6S8I8, which crystallizes in the cubic space group Fm[Formula: see text]m and contains isolated [Re6S8I6]4- clusters. Rb6Re6S8I8 has a band gap of 2.06(5) eV and an ionization energy of 5.51(3) eV, and exhibits broad photoluminescence (PL) ranging from 1.01 eV to 2.12 eV. The room-temperature PL exhibits a PL quantum yield of 42.7% and a PL lifetime of 77 μs (99 μs at 77 K). Rb6Re6S8I8 is found to be soluble in multiple polar solvents including N,N-dimethylformamide, which enables solution processing of the material into films with thickness under 150 nm. Light-emitting diodes based on films of Rb6Re6S8I8 were fabricated, demonstrating the potential for this family of materials in optoelectronic devices.

Novel Strategies for Disrupting Cancer-Cell Functions with Mitochondria-Targeted Antitumor Drug-Loaded Nanoformulations. Int J Nanomedicine 2021; 16:3907-3936. Abstract
Any variation in normal cellular function results in mitochondrial dysregulation that occurs in several diseases, including cancer. Such processes as oxidative stress, metabolism, signaling, and biogenesis play significant roles in cancer initiation and progression. Due to their central role in cellular metabolism, mitochondria are favorable therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of conditions like neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Subcellular mitochondria-specific theranostic nanoformulations for simultaneous targeting, drug delivery, and imaging of these organelles are of immense interest in cancer therapy. It is a challenging task to cross multiple barriers to target mitochondria in diseased cells. To overcome these multiple barriers, several mitochondriotropic nanoformulations have been engineered for the transportation of mitochondria-specific drugs. These nanoformulations include liposomes, dendrimers, carbon nanotubes, polymeric nanoparticles (NPs), and inorganic NPs. These nanoformulations are made mitochondriotropic by conjugating them with moieties like dequalinium, Mito-Porter, triphenylphosphonium, and Mitochondria-penetrating peptides. Most of these nanoformulations are meticulously tailored to control their size, charge, shape, mitochondriotropic drug loading, and specific cell-membrane interactions. Recently, some novel mitochondria-selective antitumor compounds known as mitocans have shown high toxicity against cancer cells. These selective compounds form vicious oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species cycles within cancer cells and ultimately push them to cell death. Nanoformulations approved by the FDA and EMA for clinical applications in cancer patients include Doxil, NK105, and Abraxane. The novel use of these NPs still faces tremendous challenges and an immense amount of research is needed to understand the proper mechanisms of cancer progression and control by these NPs. Here in this review, we summarize current advancements and novel strategies of delivering different anticancer therapeutic agents to mitochondria with the help of various nanoformulations.

Abstract
The surface deposition of luminescent anionic cluster complex [{Re6S8}(OH)6]4- advantages to the design and synthesis of composite luminescent silica nanoparticles (SNs) for intracellular imaging and sensing, while the encapsulation of the cluster units into SNs lacks for efficient luminescence. The deposition of the Re6 clusters resulted from their assembly at the silica surface functionalized by amino-groups provides the synthetic route for the composite SNs with bright cluster-centered luminescence invariable in pH range from 4.0 to 12.0. The pH-dependent supramolecular assembly of the cluster units with polyethyleneimine (PEI) at the silica surface is an alternative route for the synthesis of the composite SNs with high cluster-centered luminescence sensitive to pH-changes within 4.0-6.0. The sensitivity derives from the pH-driven conformational changes of PEI chains resulting in the release of the clusters from the PEI-based confinement under the acidification within pH 6.0-4.0. The potential of the composite SNs in cellular contrasting has been also revealed by the cell viability and flow cytometry measurements. It has been found that the PEI-supported embedding of the cluster units facilitates cell internalization of the composite SNs as well as results in specific intracellular distribution manifested by efficient staining of the cell nuclei in the confocal images.

Abstract
The present work introduces Gd3+ complexes with giant keplerate polyanions as a promising basis for MRI contrast agents. The impact of Gd3+ binding with different building blocks of keplerates on the magnetic relaxivity of the complexes is revealed by comparative study of the keplerates [{Mo6O21}12{Mo2O4(OAc)}30]42-, [{Mo6O21}12{Mo2O4(HPO4)}30]72-, and [{Mo6O21}12{Mo2O2S2(OAc)}30]42-. Unprecedentedly high longitudinal and transverse relaxivity values (up to 250 and 300 mM-1 s-1 correspondingly) are achieved for the keplerates possessing edl{Mo2O4(OAc)} and {Mo2O4(HPO42-)} moieties under their 1 : 1 complex formation with Gd3+. The transformation of the external pores from Mo9O9 to Mo9O6S3 in the {Mo2O2S2(OAc)}-keplerate and an increase in the Gd3+-to-keplerate ratio are the factors that decrease the relaxivity. The rapid degradation of the free keplerates in aqueous solutions restricts the use of the Gd3+-bound keplerates with 1 : 1 stoichiometry as MRI contrast agents. In this work, the optimized stoichiometry of the complexes, their self-assembly into ultra-small nanoparticles and their hydrophilic coating by a triblock copolymer are highlighted as tools for increasing both the colloid and chemical stability of the keplerate complexes. Optimal keplerate compositions have been identified to achieve a compromise of low cytotoxicity and high stability; these Gd3+-bound keplerates exhibit longitudinal and transverse relaxivity values (95 and 114 mM-1 s-1, respectively), well within the region of interest for MRI techniques.

Abstract
Selective substitution of μ-SO22- groups by either O2- or Se2- ions occurs upon heating the bioctahedral rhenium cluster complex K6[Re12CS14(μ-SO2)3(CN)6] in air atmosphere or in the presence of a Se source, respectively, manifesting the remarkable lability of SO22- ligands bound to a transition-metal cluster. A series of compounds based on the new mixed-ligand anions, [Re12CS14(μ-O)3(CN)6]6-, [Re12CS14(μ-Se)3(CN)6]6-, and [Re12CS14(μ-O)3(OH)6]6-, were isolated and their solid-state structures were elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Along with the previously reported μ-sulfide clusters, the new species constitute a series of rhenium anionic complexes with the common formula [Re12CS14(μ-Q)3L6]6- (Q = O, S, Se, L = CN-; Q = O, S, L = OH-), within which the total charge and number of cluster valence electrons (CVEs) are constant. The article presents insights into the mechanistic and synthetic aspects of the substitution process, and it comprehensively discusses the influence of inner ligand environment on the structure, spectroscopic characteristics, and electrochemical behavior of the novel compounds.

Abstract
The octahedral rhenium cluster compound Na2H8[{Re6Se8}(P(C2H4CONH2)(C2H4COO)2)6] has recently emerged as a very promising X-ray contrast agent for biomedical applications. However, the synthesis of this compound is rather challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the hydrolysis of the initial P(C2H4CN)3 ligand during the reaction process. Therefore, in this report we compare the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of Na2H8[{Re6Se8}(P(C2H4CONH2)(C2H4COO)2)6] with those of related compounds featuring the fully hydrolysed form of the phosphine ligand, namely Na2H14[{Re6Q8}(P(C2H4COO)3)6] (Q = S or Se). Our results demonstrate that the cytotoxicity and acute in vivo toxicity of the complex Na2H8[{Re6Se8}(P(C2H4CONH2)(C2H4COO)2)6] solutions were considerably lower than those of compounds with the fully hydrolysed ligand P(C2H4COOH)3. Such behavior can be explained by the higher osmolality of Na2H14[{Re6Q8}(P(C2H4COO)3)6] versus Na2H8[{Re6Se8}(P(C2H4CONH2)(C2H4COO)2)6].

Abstract
A major challenge in designing cancer therapies is the induction of cancer cell apoptosis, although activation of intrinsic apoptotic pathways by targeting gold nanoparticles to mitochondria is promising. We report an in vitro procedure targeting mitochondria with conjugated gold nanoparticles and investigating effects on apoptosis induction in the human breast cancer cell line Jimt-1. Gold nanoparticles were conjugated to a variant of turbo green fluorescent protein (mitoTGFP) harbouring an amino-terminal mitochondrial localization signal. Au nanoparticle conjugates were further complexed with cationic maltotriose-modified poly(propylene imine) third generation dendrimers. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy revealed that Au nanoparticle conjugates were directed to mitochondria upon transfection, causing partial rupture of the outer mitochondrial membrane, triggering cell death. The ability to target Au nanoparticles into mitochondria of breast cancer cells and induce apoptosis reveals an alternative application of Au nanoparticles in photothermal therapy of cancer.

Abstract
The application of nanomaterials (NMs) in biomedicine is increasing rapidly and offers excellent prospects for the development of new non-invasive strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this review, we provide a brief description of cancer pathology and the characteristics that are important for tumor-targeted NM design, followed by an overview of the different types of NMs explored to date, covering synthetic aspects and approaches explored for their application in unimodal and multimodal imaging, diagnosis and therapy. Significant synthetic advances now allow for the preparation of NMs with highly controlled geometry, surface charge, physicochemical properties, and the decoration of their surfaces with polymers and bioactive molecules in order to improve biocompatibility and to achieve active targeting. This is stimulating the development of a diverse range of nanometer-sized objects that can recognize cancer tissue, enabling visualization of tumors, delivery of anti-cancer drugs and/or the destruction of tumors by different therapeutic techniques.
