Abstract
CONTEXT Coix [Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. mayuen (Roman.) Stapf (Poaceae)], a crop of medicinal and edible significance, contains coixol, which has demonstrated anticancer properties. However, the limited solubility of coixol restricts its potential therapeutic applications. OBJECTIVE This study prepared a water-soluble coixol-β-cyclodextrin polymer (CDP) inclusion compound and evaluated its anticancer effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS The coixol-CDP compound was synthesized through a solvent-stirring and freeze-drying technique. Its coixol content was quantified using HPLC, and its stability was tested under various conditions. The anticancer effects of the coixol-CDP compound (4.129, 8.259, 16.518, and 33.035 mg/L for 24, 48, and 72 h) on the proliferation of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells were evaluated using an MTT assay; cell morphology was examined by Hoechst nuclear staining; apoptosis and cell cycle was detected by flow cytometry; and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins was assessed by Western blots. RESULTS The water-soluble coixol-CDP inclusion compound was successfully prepared with an inclusion ratio of 86.6% and an inclusion yield rate of 84.1%. The coixol content of the compound was 5.63% and the compound remained stable under various conditions. Compared to coixol alone, all 24, 48, and 72 h administrations with the coixol-CDP compound exhibited lower IC50 values (33.93 ± 2.28, 16.80 ± 1.46, and 6.93 ± 0.83 mg/L) in A549 cells; the compound also showed stronger regulatory effects on apoptosis-related proteins. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS These findings offer a new perspective for the potential clinical application of Coix in NSCLC therapy and its future research.

Abstract
The electrodeposition of graphene has drawn considerable attention due to its appealing applications for sensors, supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. However, there are still some limitations in the current electrodeposition methods for graphene. Here, we present a novel electrodeposition method for the direct deposition of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with chitosan. In this method, a 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride-based chitosan-modified rGO material was prepared. This material disperses homogenously in the chitosan solution, forming a deposition solution with good dispersion stability. Subsequently, the modified rGO material was deposited on an electrode through codeposition with chitosan, based on the coordination deposition method. After electrodeposition, the homogeneous, deposited rGO/chitosan films can be generated on copper or silver electrodes or substrates. The electrodeposition method allows for the convenient and controlled creation of rGO/chitosan nanocomposite coatings and films of different shapes and thickness. It also introduces a new method of creating films, as they can be peeled completely from the electrodes. Moreover, this method allows for a rGO/chitosan film to be deposited directly onto an electrode, which can then be used for electrochemical detection.

Chemiluminescence assay for detection of 2-hydroxyfluorene using the G-quadruplex DNAzyme-H 2O 2-luminol system. Mikrochim Acta 2017; 185:54. Abstract
A chemiluminescence (CL) based assay is described for the determination of the environmental pollutant 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-HOFlu) which is found to inhibit the CL of a system composed of the G-quadruplex/hemin complex (a DNAzyme), H2O2, and luminol. The G-rich aptamer PW17 is transformed to a potassium(I)-stabilized G-quadruplex-hemin complex which displays peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of luminol by H2O2 which is accompanied by strong blue CL emission. On addition of 2-HOFlu, it will participate in the G-quadruplex DNAzyme-mediated oxidation by H2O2. As a result, CL intensity is decreased. The difference in CL intensity (ΔI) before and after addition of 2-HOFlu serves as the signal for its quantitation. In water of pH 9.0, a linear relationship is found for the 1 nM to 1 μM concentration range, with a 0.2 nM detection limit. The assay is highly selective over other fluorene derivatives. It was successfully applied to the determination of 2-HOFlu in spiked lake water samples. The method is rapid, cost-effective and convenient. Conceivably, it has a wide scope in that it may be applied to other target pollutants for which G-quadruplexes are available. Graphical abstract A chemiluminescence (CL) assay is described for the determination of the environmental pollutant 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-HOFlu) based on the inhibition of the CL system composed of the G-quadruplex/hemin complex (a DNAzyme), H2O2, and luminol.

Abstract
A novel sandwich-type biosensor was developed for the electrochemical detection of α-1 antitrypsin (AAT, a recognized biomarker for Alzheimer's disease). The biosensor was composed of 3, 4, 9, 10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid/carbon nanotubes (PTCA-CNTs) as a sensing platform and alkaline phosphatase-labeled AAT antibody functionalized silver nanoparticles (ALP-AAT Ab-Ag NPs) as a signal enhancer. CNTs offer high surface area and good electrical conductivity. Importantly, Ag NPs could increase the amount of ALP on the sensing surface and the ALP could dephosphorylate 4-amino phenyl phosphate (APP) enzymatically to produce electroactive species 4-aminophenol (AP). For detecting AAT based on the sandwich-type biosensor, the results show that the peak current value of AP using ALP-AAT Ab-Ag NPs as signal enhancer is much higher than that by using ALP-AAT Ab bioconjugate (without Ag NPs), the biosensor exhibited desirable performance for AAT determination with a wide linearity in the range from 0.05 to 20.0pM and a low detection limit of 0.01pM. Finally, the developed sensor was successfully applied to the analysis of AAT concentration in serum samples.

Abstract
The potential electrochromic application of graphene-based nanohybrids is hampered by the challenges in interfacing the electrochromic nanoparticles with graphene at atomic scale and in fabricating their thin film on the substrate through a scalable method. In an effort to overcome these challenges, we demonstrate a highly dispersible graphene-based molybdenum oxide nanohybrid (mRGO-MoO3-x) for flexible electrochromic application. With only a squeeze pipet, mRGO-MoO3-x could be deposited with a high coverage on various substrates through a scalable equipment-free Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition method. By taking advantage of high transmittance benefited from its remarkable thinness, the mRGO-MoO3-x Langmuir-Blodgett film shows a superior reversible electrochromic property with high coloration efficiency on both hard and flexible substrates.

Abstract
A novel competitive host-guest strategy regulated by protein biogate was developed for sensitive and selective analysis of prion protein. The methylene blue (MB)-tagged prion aptamer (MB-Apt) was introduced to the multiwalled carbon nanotubes-β-cyclodextrins (MWCNTs-β-CD) composites-modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode through the host-guest interaction between β-CD and MB. In the absence of prion, MB-Apt could be displaced by ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA) due to its stronger binding affinity to β-CD, resulting in a large oxidation peak of FCA. However, in the presence of prion, the specific prion-aptamer interaction drove the formation of protein biogate to seal the cavity of β-CD, which hindered the guest displacement of MB by FCA and resulted in the oxidation peak current of MB (IMB) increased and that of FCA (IFCA) decreased. The developed aptasensor showed good response towards the target (prion protein) with a low detection limit of 160 fM. By changing the specific aptamers, this strategy could be easily extended to detect other proteins, showing promising potential for extensive applications in bioanalysis.

Abstract
A highly sensitive, reusable G-rich DNA sensor was reported for the detection of α-naphthol by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Specifically, a single-stranded G-rich DNA was self-assembled on the electrode and transformed into K(+)-stabilized G-quadruplex, which could catalyze H2O2-mediated oxidation of α-naphthol (with hemin as a cofactor) to 1, 4-naphthoquinone precipitated on the DNA films. Due to the insolubility of 1, 4-naphthoquinone, the charge transfer resistance (RCT) was increased to maximum within 15 min. Depending on the difference in charge transfer resistance change (ΔRCT), the α-naphthol could be detected with the detection limit of 0.1 nM in Tris-ClO4 buffer solution (20mM, pH=7.4). Moreover, the sensor demonstrated a high selectivity over other selected phenolic compounds. The performance of the sensor in the real lake water was also explored with the detection limit of 0.8 nM. Finally, the regeneration of the sensor was investigated, which allowed for reuse more than 4 cycles with a mean recovery of 94% of the original signal.

Abstract
We report a simple and facile approach for the synthesis of β-cyclodextrin non-covalently functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes bridged by 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (β-CD-PTCA-SWCNTs). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical methods were used to characterize the as-prepared functionalized SWCNTs. Furthermore, the β-CD-PTCA-SWCNTs were applied successfully to detect 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (9-ACA, one derivative of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) by electrochemical methods. The results show that the oxidation peak current of 9-ACA on β-CD-PTCA-SWCNTs modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode is 4.0 and 31.2 times higher than that at the SWCNTs/GC and bare GC electrodes, respectively. The proposed modified electrode has a linear response range of 2.00 to 140.00 nM with a detection limit of 0.65 nM (S/N = 3) towards 9-ACA, which is due to the synergic effects of the SWCNTs (e.g. their good electrochemical properties and large surface area) and β-CD (e.g. a hydrophilic external surface and a high supramolecular recognition and enrichment capability).
