Abstract
The question of size economy in the design of chromophores for nonlinear optics is addressed in this investigation. We have synthesized directly linked donor-acceptor dyads, which lack a π-conjugated linker, the presence of which is usually considered obligatory in materials designed for nonlinear optics. Correlating linear optical data, electrochemical data, computational data and hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS) data on ferrocene (Fc) based dyads, we demonstrate that the first hyperpolarizability of such size economical chromophores is significantly better compared to that of Fc based, traditional, larger, donor-π-acceptor chromophores. Arguably, a larger π-conjugated linker decreases the electronic communication between the donor and the acceptor and weakens the intramolecular charge transfer in such chromophores.

Abstract
A new ferrocene appended linear donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) type 1,8-naphthalimide chromophores [FcPhNap-n-butyl (1) and Fc(Ph)2Nap-n-butyl (2)] have been synthesized and characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The chromophores 1 and 2 show the one-electron transfer process, which was examined through cyclic voltammetric (CV) method. The solvatochromic studies show red shift by increasing the solvent polarity from non-polar to polar for both the chromophores 1 and 2, due to the better stabilization of the more polarized excited state than the ground state in the polar solvent. The fluorescence studies show low fluorescence emission, which was enhanced by aggregation in THF/water mixture when the water ratio is increased upto 60%, due to the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) process in the aggregated state. Also, the quantum yield increases 3.4 (1) and 6.8 (2) times in the aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) state than THF solution for both the chromophores [THF/AIEE = 0.05/0.17 for 1 and 0.03/0.22 for 2]. The second-order non-linear optical properties of the chromophores 1 and 2 were studied using Kurtz and Perry powder technique, chromophore 2 shows 1.2 times higher SHG efficiency than 1, owing to the presence of additional phenyl group in 2, which further supports the effective charge transfer process from donor to acceptor. Furthermore, optical and non-linear optical properties of chromophores 1 and 2 were analyzed by DFT/TD-DFT calculations using different functionals (B3LYP, long-range corrected CAM-B3LYP and LC-BLYP) with 6-31+G** level of theory. The B3LYP functional shows higher hyperpolarizability values [β0 = 109.2 × 10-30 esu (1), 299.7 × 10-30 esu (2)], due to the overestimation of the dipole moment, polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities between the donor-π-acceptor systems in B3LYP-hybrid functional, which leads to incorrect long-range charge transfer.

Abstract
A Y-shaped push-pull dye (1) with N,N-dimethylanilino donors and a benzonitrile acceptor connected via an imidazole-based π-conjugated spacer was designed. It showed a dark yellow color in solution due to facile intramolecular charge-transfer interaction, but no fluorescence was detected, presumably due to the photo-induced electron transfer effect of the imidazole moiety. However, addition of nerve agents such as diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP, sarin mimic) and diethyl cyanophosphate (DCNP, Tabun mimic) resulted in a blue-colored fluorescence with fading of the native dark yellow color. Mechanistic studies indicated nucleophilic attack of imidazole at the phosphorus of DCP or DCNP, leading to the formation of a phosphorylated intermediate, which undergoes time-dependent hydrolysis (∼24 h) in aqueous medium. This process recovers the free probe (enzyme-like behavior) and releases a less-toxic organophosphate compound as the byproduct. The phosphorylated derivative of 1, formed during such interaction, shows a different electronic behavior, which reduces the extent of charge-transfer interaction as well as nonradiative decay and supports emissive properties. Considering the high sensitivity of 1 towards DCP and DCNP with LOD 35 and 42 ppb, we prepared easy test strips for on-site vapor-phase detection of nerve agents.

Novel Ferrocene-Appended β-Ketoimines and Related BF 2 Derivatives with Significant Aggregation-Induced Emission and Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties. Chemistry 2021; 27:7124-7137. Abstract
A series of new β-ketoimines containing a ferrocene moiety and their BF2 complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The solvatochromism of the β-ketoimines was studied, putting in evidence a redshift with increasing solvent polarity. This positive solvatochromism can be attributed to a more polarized excited state compared with the ground state, due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transitions. The β-ketoimines exhibited weak emission, attributable to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomenon. This ESIPT effect is suppressed upon restriction of the keto-enamine tautomerism, induced upon addition of BF3 ⋅OEt2 , which afforded the related BF2 complexes, characterized by an enhancement of the fluorescence through the ICT effect. Both the β-ketoimines and BF2 complexes exhibited significant aggregation-induced emission behavior in mixtures of CH3 CN/H2 O, due to restriction of intramolecular rotation in the aggregated state. The frontier molecular orbital levels, ground- and excited-state dipole moments (μg and μe ), and the origin of electronic absorption spectra were studied by time-dependent DFT calculations. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were determined by the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation technique. The μβ1907 values of the β-ketoimines increased upon the formation of the related BF2 complexes, mainly due to an enhancement of the ground-state dipole moment. The results presented here reveal that some of these novel compounds are excellent multifunctional candidates for NLO and luminescence applications.

Abstract
A series of four D-(π-Pt-π-A)2 new V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes bearing a diphenylpyranylidene ligand as a pro-aromatic donor group (D) and various electron-attracting groups (A) separated by platinum bis-acetylide fragments have been synthesized, characterized and studied for their electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The nonlinear optical properties of these complexes have been determined by using the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) generation technique, and their optical properties have been rationalized by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on a range-separated hybrid. All complexes display positive μβ0 values. In addition, the second-order NLO responses of the complexes could be easily modulated by incorporating various end-capped electron-attracting groups, namely malononitrile, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine and pyrimidinium. Remarkably, complex 7 bearing a pyrimidinium fragment displays the highest μβ0 value among all the complexes of this series. Its NLO response is twice as high as that of the mononuclear analogue complex RD2, which has been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
Nine chromophores with ferrocene donor and pyridine/pyridinium acceptors have been prepared and further investigated. The performed X-ray analysis showed partially polarized and geometrically oblate pyridine unit. An extension of the π-system and N-quaternization were revealed as suitable tools for exclusive manipulation of the LUMO with the almost steady HOMO. Whereas the electrochemical HOMO–LUMO gap can be tuned from 3.01 to 1.49 eV, the high- and low-energy absorption bands were found within the range of 280–402/456–547 nm. The pyridinium chromophores showed distinct negative solvatochromism. A thorough DFT analysis has been performed; it turned out that ferrocene donor is capable of two principal D–A interactions, whose employment depends on the appended electron-withdrawing moiety. Nine chromophores with ferrocene donor and pyridine/pyridinium acceptors have been prepared and further investigated.![]()

Abstract
A series of new push-pull chromophores based on a combined cyclopenta[c]thiophene-4,6-dione (ThDione) acceptor, N,N-dimethylaniline, N-piperidinylthiophene or ferrocene donors, and ethylene or buta-1,3-dienylene π-linkers has been designed and synthesized. Utilizing one or two ThDione acceptors afforded linear or branched push-pull molecules. Experimental and theoretical study of their fundamental properties revealed thermal robustness up to 260 °C, a electrochemical/optical HOMO-LUMO gap that is tunable within the range of 1.47-2.19/1.99-2.39 eV, and thorough elucidation of structure-property relationships. Compared to currently available portfolio of heterocyclic electron-withdrawing units, ThDione proved to be a powerful and versatile acceptor unit. It imparts significant intramolecular charge transfer and polarizes the π-system, which results in enhanced (non)linear optical response.

Abstract
Conversion efficiency between electrical and optical signals is very important for the development
of modern information technologies. Due to their advantages in half-wave voltage, bandwidth, cost and integration,
as well as organic electro-optic (EO) parameters, these materials are widely studied and used in microwave
photonic devices. Second order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores, as the core of organic EO
materials have an increasing interest in this branch. Auxiliary donors present a new direction for the design and
improvement of organic NLO chromophores. In this short review, the advantages, theoretical calculations and
experimental results of auxiliary donors are reviewed and discussed in detail.

Abstract
Nine new quadrupolar chromophores based on diketopyrrolopyrrole were designed and prepared by cross-coupling reactions. The property tuning has been achieved by structural variation of the peripheral substituents (donor) and enlargement of the π-system. Fundamental properties of target molecules were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, electrochemistry, and absorption and emission spectra. Nonlinear optical properties were studied by measuring the third harmonic generation. The experimental data were completed by quantum-chemical calculations and structure–property relationships were elucidated.

Abstract
We report a structure of ferrocene-pyrene conjugate (1) comprising electro and photo-active dual-signaling units. In particular, 1 upon interaction with Cu(II), displays selectively one-photon fluorescence quenching, but it shows two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section 1230 GM (at 780 nm). Further, 1 displayed two irreversible oxidative waves at 0.39 V and 0.80 V (vs Ag/AgCl), in the electrochemical analysis which upon addition of Cu2+, led to the negative potential shift in both the oxidative waves to appear at 0.25 V and 0.68 V. The triple mode changes in presence of Cu(II) suggesting the possible application of 1 for the detection of Cu(II) in aqueous media. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Push-pull molecules represent a unique and fascinating class of organic π-conjugated materials. Herein, we provide a summary of their recent extraordinary design inspired by letters of the alphabet, especially focusing on H-, L-, T-, V-, X-, and Y-shaped molecules. Representative structures from each class were presented and their fundamental properties and prospective applications were discussed. In particular, emphasis is given to molecules recently prepared in our laboratory with T-, X-, and Y-shaped arrangements based on indan-1,3-dione, benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, imidazole, and triphenylamine. These push-pull molecules turned out to be very efficient charge-transfer chromophores with tunable properties suitable for second-order nonlinear optics, two-photon absorption, reversible pH-induced and photochromic switching, photocatalysis, and intercalation.

Abstract
The studies of geometrical structures, thermal stabilities, redox properties, nonlinear responses and optoelectronic properties have been carried out on a series of novel ferrocenyl (Fc) chromophores with the view of assessing their switchable and tailorable second order nonlinear optics (NLO). The use of a constant Fc donor and a 4,4'-bipyridinium acceptor and varied conjugated bridges makes it possible to systematically determine the contribution of organic connectors to chromophore nonlinear optical activities. The structures reveal that both the reduction reactions and organic connectors have a significant influence on 4,4'-bipyridinium. The potential energy surface maps along with plots of reduced density gradient mirror the thermal stabilities of the Fc-based chromophores. The first and second reductions take place preferentially at the 4,4'-bipyridinium moieties. Significantly, the reduction processes result in the molecular switches with large NLO contrast varying from zero or very small to a large value. Moreover, time-dependent density functional theory results indicate that the absorption peaks are mainly attributed to Fc to 4,4'-bipyridinium charge transfer and the mixture of intramolecular charge transfer within the two respective 4,4'-bipyridinium moieties coupled with interlayer charge transfer between the two 4,4'-bipyridinium moieties. This provides us with comprehensive information on the effect of organic connectors on the NLO properties.

Abstract
Mono-((Z)-2-amino-3-((E)-ferrocenylideneamino)butenedinitrile) (1) and bis-((E)-2,3-bis-((E)-ferrocenylideneamino)butenedinitrile) (2) substituted Schiff bases obtained by the reaction between ferrocenecarbaldehyde and diaminomaleonitrile were prepared and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, IR, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy methods, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory were used to elucidate the electronic structure and the origin of observed excited states in both compounds. Electrochemical techniques were employed to investigate the possibility for the formation of a mixed-valence state of the iron centers in 2+, which are connected by a conjugated π-system. Two reversible oxidation potentials were observed in cyclic voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemical experiments revealed the presence of a low-energy intervalence charge transfer band in 2+, corresponding to class II of the mixed-valence systems. Both complexes were tested for cation-recognition properties using a variety of main group and transition-metal cations. It was shown that complex 1 can be used as a selective optical sensor in recognition of Hg2+ ions. It was also shown by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography that one of the final reaction products between Hg2+ ions and complex 1 is 2-ferrocenyl-4,5-dicyanoimidazole (3).
