Abstract
OBJECTIVE Smartphone applications (i.e., apps) designed to target mental health symptoms have received increasing public and empirical attention, including in eating disorder|eating disorders (EDs) treatment. While some data have begun to characterise app users in non-controlled settings, there is limited information on use of apps in higher levels of care (e.g., partial hospitalisation or residential treatment programs) for EDs. METHOD This study aimed to explore metrics of use while in treatment for a commonly used ED-focused mobile app (Recovery Record) among individuals enroled in intensive outpatient, partial hospitalisation, residential, or inpatient treatments (N = 2042). RESULTS Results indicated that older individuals and participants with binge eating disorder demonstrated more frequent app engagement compared to younger participants and other ED diagnoses, respectively. Individuals entering at intensive outpatient and partial hospitalisation levels of care, as well as those with routine discharges engaged more frequently with RR compared to individuals entering in inpatient or residential treatment, and those with non-routine discharges. CONCLUSIONS Our data provide initial descriptions of how RR may be used within higher levels of care for adults with EDs. Further work is needed to establish the benefit of these apps in clinical settings for EDs over and above standard treatment, better characterise for whom these apps provide benefit, and identify how best to tailor the experience to promote engagement across the full spectrum of ED patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adjunctive mobile health (mHealth) technologies offer promise for improving treatment response to enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT-E) among individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders, but research on the key "active" components of these technologies has been very limited. The present study will use a full factorial design to (1) evaluate the optimal combination of complexity of two commonly used mHealth components (i.e., self-monitoring and microinterventions) alongside CBT-E and (2) test whether the optimal complexity level of these interventions is moderated by baseline self-regulation. Secondary aims of the present study include evaluating target engagement associated with each level of these intervention components and quantifying the component interaction effects (i.e., partially additive, fully additive, or synergistic effects). METHOD Two hundred and sixty-four participants with binge-spectrum eating disorders will be randomized to six treatment conditions determined by the combination of self-monitoring condition (i.e., standard self-monitoring or skills monitoring) and microinterventions condition (i.e., no microinterventions, automated microinterventions, or just-in-time adaptive interventions) as an augmentation to 16 sessions of CBT-E. Treatment outcomes will be measured using the Eating Disorder Examination and compared by treatment condition using multilevel models. RESULTS Results will clarify the "active" components in mHealth interventions for binge eating. DISCUSSION The present study will provide critical insight into the efficacy of commonly used digital intervention components (i.e., skills monitoring and microinterventions) alongside CBT-E. Furthermore, results of this study may inform personalization of digital intervention intensity based on patient profiles of self-regulation. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE This study will examine the relative effectiveness of commonly used components of application-based interventions as an augmentation to cognitive-behavioral therapy for binge eating. Findings from this study will inform the development of an optimized digital intervention for individuals with binge eating.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore patients' use of the self-monitoring app Recovery Record during 26 weeks of naturalistic eating disorder treatment. METHODS Selected patient characteristics at baseline were explored as predictors of app use using linear regression. Patients were grouped according to diagnosis (anorexia versus bulimia), and mixed-effects analyses were used to explore differences in app use between diagnoses across four time periods (weeks 1-4; weeks 5-8; weeks 9-12; weeks 13-26). RESULTS Eighty-four patients were included of which 41 had anorexia and 43 had bulimia. The total number of logs varied greatly (mean (SD): 592 (628.50)), and patient app activity almost ceased at week 13. Increasing age and no previous eating disorder treatment predicted increased app activity (p = .007; p = .039, respectively). Patients with anorexia logged over four times more often than patients with bulimia in the last time period (median (CI): 4.27 (1.28;14.31); p = .018). Time predicted declining app use (all p ≤ .007). CONCLUSION Future research on long-term app engagement should investigate associations between patients' app use and changes in their eating disorder symptom severity over time.
