Abstract
Global nocturnal temperatures are rising more rapidly than daytime temperatures and have a large effect on crop productivity. In particular, stomatal conductance at night (gsn ) is surprisingly poorly understood and has not been investigated despite constituting a significant proportion of overall canopy water loss. Here, we present the results of 3 yr of field data using 12 spring Triticum aestivum genotypes which were grown in NW Mexico and subjected to an artificial increase in night-time temperatures of 2°C. Under nocturnal heating, grain yields decreased (1.9% per 1°C) without significant changes in daytime leaf-level physiological responses. Under warmer nights, there were significant differences in the magnitude and decrease in gsn , values of which were between 9 and 33% of daytime rates while respiration appeared to acclimate to higher temperatures. Decreases in grain yield were genotype-specific; genotypes categorised as heat tolerant demonstrated some of the greatest declines in yield in response to warmer nights. We conclude the essential components of nocturnal heat tolerance in wheat are uncoupled from resilience to daytime temperatures, raising fundamental questions for physiological breeding. Furthermore, this study discusses key physiological traits such as pollen viability, root depth and irrigation type may also play a role in genotype-specific nocturnal heat tolerance.

Abstract
Introduction Soybean is sensitive to light and temperature. Under the background of global asymmetric climate warming. Methods The increase of night temperature may have an important impact on soybean yield. In this study, three varieties with different level of protein were planted under 18°C and 28°C night temperatures for investigating the effects of high night temperatures on soybean yield formation and the dynamic changes of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) during the seed filling period (R5-R7). Results and discussion The results indicated that high night temperatures resulted in smaller seed size, lower seed weight, and a reduced number of effective pods and seeds per plant, and thus, a significant reduction in yield per plant. Analysis of the seed composition variations showed carbohydrates were more substantially affected by high night temperature than protein and oil. We observed "carbon hunger" caused by high night temperature increased photosynthesis and sucrose accumulation in the leaves during the early stage of high night temperature treatment. With elongated treated time, the excessive carbon consumption led to the decrease of sucrose accumulation in soybean seeds. Transcriptome analysis of leaves after 7 days of treatment showed that the expression of most sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphatase genes decreased significantly under the high night temperature. Which could be another important reason for the decrease of sucrose. These findings provided a theoretical basis for enhancing the tolerance of soybean to high night temperature.

Abstract
In the era of climate change, the overall productivity of pea (Pisum sativum L.) is being threatened by several abiotic stresses including heat stress (HS). HS causes severe yield losses by adversely affecting several traits in peas. A reduction in pod yield has been reported from 11.1% to 17.5% when mean daily temperature increase from 1.4 to 2.2°C. High-temperature stress (30.5-33°C) especially during reproductive phase is known to drastically reduce both seed yield and germination. HS during germination and early vegetative stage resulted in poor emergence and stunted plant growth along with detrimental effects on physiological functions of the pea plant. To combat HS and continue its life cycle, plants use various defense strategies including heat escape, avoidance or tolerance mechanisms. Ironically, the threshold temperatures for pea plant and its responses are inconsistent and not yet clearly identified. Trait discovery through traditional breeding such as semi leaflessness (afila), upright growing habit, lodging tolerance, lower canopy temperature and small seeded nature has highlighted their utility for greater adaptation under HS in pea. Screening of crop gene pool and landraces for HS tolerance in a targeted environment is a simple approach to identify HS tolerant genotypes. Thus, precise phenotyping using modern phenomics tools could lead to increased breeding efficiency. The NGS (next generation sequencing) data can be associated to find the candidate genes responsible for the HS tolerance in pea. In addition, genomic selection, genome wide association studies (GWAS) and marker assisted selection (MAS) can be used for the development of HS tolerant pea genotypes. Additionally, development of transgenics could be an alternative strategy for the development of HS tolerant pea genotypes. This review comprehensively covers the various aspects of HS tolerance mechanisms in the pea plant, screening protocols, omic advances, and future challenges for the development of HS tolerant genotypes.

Abstract
Climate change is a defining challenge of the 21st century, and this decade is a critical time for action to mitigate the worst effects on human populations and ecosystems. Plant science can play an important role in developing crops with enhanced resilience to harsh conditions (e.g. heat, drought, salt stress, flooding, disease outbreaks) and engineering efficient carbon-capturing and carbon-sequestering plants. Here, we present examples of research being conducted in these areas and discuss challenges and open questions as a call to action for the plant science community.

Abstract
Maize pollen is highly sensitive to heat and drought, but few studies have investigated the combined effects of heat and drought on pollen viability. In this study, pollen's structural and physiological characteristics were determined after heat, drought, and combined stressors. Furthermore, integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of maize pollen were conducted to identify potential mechanisms of stress responses. Tassel growth and spikelet development were considerably suppressed, pollen viability was negatively impacted, and pollen starch granules were depleted during anthesis under stress. The inhibitory effects were more significant due to combined stresses than to heat or drought individually. The metabolic analysis identified 71 important metabolites in the combined stress compared to the other treatments, including sugars and their derivatives related to pollen viability. Transcriptomics also revealed that carbohydrate metabolism was significantly altered under stress. Moreover, a comprehensive metabolome-transcriptome analysis identified a central mechanism in the biosynthesis of UDP-glucose involved in reducing the activity of sucrose synthase SH-1 (shrunken 1) and sus1 (sucrose synthase 1) that suppressed sucrose transfer to UDP-glucose, leading to pollen viability exhaustion under stress. In conclusion, the lower pollen viability after heat and drought stress was associated with poor sucrose synthase activity due to the stress treatments.

Abstract
Heat stress seriously affects medicinal herbs’ growth and yield. Rubisco accumulation factor (Raf) is a key mediator regulating the activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), which plays important roles in carbon assimilation and the Calvin cycle in plants. Raf has been studied in many plants, but has rarely been studied in the important medicinal plant fragrant woodfern (Dryopteris fragrans). The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of Raf on carbohydrate metabolism and the response to heat stress in medicinal plants. In this study, high temperature treatment upregulated the expression of DfRaf, which was significantly higher than that of phosphoribokinase (DfPRK), Rubisco small subunits (DfRbcS), Rubisco large subunits (DfRbcL) and Rubisco activase (DfRCA). The subcellular localization showed that the DfRaf proteins were primarily located in the nucleus; DfPRK, DfRbcS, DfRbcL and DfRCA proteins were primarily located in the chloroplast. We found that overexpression of DfRaf led to increased activity of Rubisco, RCA and PRK under high-temperature stress. The H2O2, O2− and MDA content of the DfRaf-OV-L2 and DfRaf-OV-L6 transgenic lines were significantly lower than those of WT and VC plants under high-temperature stress. The photosynthetic pigments, proline, soluble sugar content and ROS-scavenging ability of the DfRaf-OV-L2 and DfRaf-OV-L6 transgenic lines were higher than those of WT and VC plants under high-temperature stress. The results showed that overexpression of the DfRaf gene increased the Rubisco activity, which enhanced the high-temperature tolerance of plants.
