Highly Dispersed CoNi Alloy Embedded in N-doped Graphitic Carbon for Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass-derived Furfural

The development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived furfural (FAL) is highly desired. Herein, series of N-doped graphitic carbon embedded CoNi bimetallic alloy nanoparticles were fabricated and used for the CTH of FAL to value-added furfuryl alcohol (FOL) with renewable isopropanol as hydrogen donor. Intrinsic catalytic activity examination indicated the catalytic performance of Ni_x Co_y @NGC (x:y=1 : 3, 1 : 1, 3 : 1) nanocatalysts were sensitive to their chemical compositions. The optimal Ni₁ Co₁ @NGC nanocatalyst with Ni/Co mole ratio of 1 : 1 afforded a largest FOL yield of 89.3% with nearly full conversion of FAL. The synergistic effect enabled by bimetallic alloys and the abundant N-based Lewis base sites and surface Co-N active species were revealed based on systematic structural characterization, responsible for the excellent catalytic efficiency of bimetallic Ni₁ Co₁ @NGC nanocatalyst for CTH of FAL.

Recent Advances on Heteroatom-Doped Porous Carbon/Metal Materials: Fascinating Heterogeneous Catalysts for Organic Transformations

Design and preparation of low-cost, effective, and novel catalysts are important topics in the field of heterogeneous catalysis from academic and industrial perspectives. Recently, heteroatom-doped porous carbon/metal materials have received significant attention as promising catalysts in divergent organic reactions. Incorporation of heteroatom into the carbon framework can tailor the properties of carbon, providing suitable interaction between support and metal, resulting in superior catalytic performance compared with those of traditional pure carbon/metal catalytic systems. In this review, we try to underscore the recent advances in the design, preparation, and application of heteroatom-doped porous carbon/metal catalysts towards various organic transformations.

Chemical Fixation of CO2 Using Highly Dispersed Cu on Hierarchically Porous N-Doped Carbon

Chemical transformation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into fine chemicals such as oxazolidinones and carbamates is mainly reported using transition-metal complexes as homogeneous catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate that a heterogeneous catalyst of highly dispersed Cu (Cu/NHPC) supported on hierarchically porous N-doped carbon (NHPC) can efficiently promote CO₂ fixations to oxazolidinones and β-oxopropylcarbamates. The obtained NHPC, assembled by ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets with a three-dimensional (3D) structure, is readily prepared by pyrolysis of a nitrogen-containing polymer gel (NPG) in the presence of an activator of potassium bicarbonate (KHCO₃). The resulting NHPC shows specific Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface areas up to 2054 m² g^-1 with a mean micro/mesopore size of 0.55/3.2 nm and a broad macropore size distribution from 50 to 230 nm. The Cu/NHPC can efficiently promote three-component coupling of CO₂, amines, and propargyl alcohols for syntheses of various oxazolidinones and β-oxopropylcarbamates with yields up to 99% and a wide substrate scope. Moreover, the Cu/NHPC exhibits excellent recyclability in CO₂-to-oxazolidinone transformation during nine-time recycling. The research thus develops an NHPC-based heterogeneous Cu catalyst for green transformation of CO₂.

Oxidative Esterification of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural with an N-doped Carbon-supported CoCu Bimetallic Catalyst

The direct fabrication of furan-2,5-dimethylcarboxylate (FDMC), a promising renewable monomer, from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a cutting-edge process. In this contribution, an elaborately designed N-doped carbon-supported CoCu bimetallic catalyst (Co_x Cu_y -NC; x/y=9:1, 7:3, 4:6, which represents the designed molar ratio of Co and Cu in the catalyst), which could offer a desirable FDMC yield of 95 % under mild and base-free conditions (Co₇ Cu₃ -NC, 2 bar O₂ , 80 °C, 4 h) is described for the oxidative esterification of HMF. Notably, an FDMC formation rate of 6.1 mol_FDMC  mol_Co ^-1  h^-1 was achieved over Co₇ Cu₃ -NC, which represents the highest catalytic efficiency so far among Co-based catalytic systems. It has been demonstrated that Cu-doping in Co₇ Cu₃ -NC catalyst brings about more active sites (Co-N_x species) with stronger molecular oxygen activation ability. The increase of surface N content of Co₇ Cu₃ -NC also improves basicity of the catalyst, which favors the hydrogen abstraction process during the HMF oxidative esterification reaction. These findings may pave an efficient and green way for the synthesis of sustainable bio-based polymer monomers.
