Abstract
Organic dyes typically have electronically excited states of both singlet and triplet multiplicity. Controlling the energy difference between these states is a key factor for making efficient organic light emitting diodes and triplet sensitizers, which fulfill essential functions in chemistry, physics, and medicine. Here, we propose a strategy to shift the singlet excited state of a known sensitizer to lower energies without shifting the energy of the triplet state, thus without compromising the ability of the sensitizer to do work. We covalently connect two to four sensitizers in such a way that their transition dipole moments are aligned in a head-to-tail fashion, but, through steric encumbrance, the delocalization is minimized between each moiety. Exciton coupling between the singlet excited states considerably lowers the first excited singlet state energy. However, the energy of the lowest triplet excited state is unperturbed because the exciton coupling strength depends on the magnitude of the transition dipole moments, which for triplets are very small. We expect that the presented strategy of designed intramolecular exciton coupling will be a useful concept in the design of both photosensitizers and emitters for organic light emitting diodes as both benefits from a small singlet-triplet energy gap.

Abstract
This review aims to discuss organic semiconductors constructed on dihydroindenofluorene positional isomers, which are key molecular scaffolds in organic electronics. Bridged oligophenylenes are key organic semiconductors that have allowed the development of organic electronic technologies. Dihydroindenofluorenes (DHIFs) belong to the family of bridged oligophenylenes constructed on a terphenyl backbone. They have proven to be very promising building blocks for the construction of highly efficient organic semiconductors for all OE devices, namely organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), phosphorescent OLEDs, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), solar cells, etc.

Abstract
This study presents the synthesis and characterization of two spirobifluorenyl derivatives substituted with either triphenylmethyl (SB-C) or triphenylsilyl (SB-Si) moieties for use as host materials in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLED). Both molecules have similar high triplet energies and large energy gaps. Blue Ir(tpz)3 and green Ir(ppy)3 phosphorescent devices were fabricated using these materials as hosts. Surprisingly, SB-Si demonstrated superior charge-transporting ability compared to SB-C, despite having similar energies for their valence orbitals. In particular, SB-Si proved to be a highly effective host for both blue and green devices, resulting in maximum efficiencies of 12.6% for the Ir(tpz)3 device and 9.6% for the Ir(ppy)3 device. These results highlight the benefits of appending the triphenylsilyl moiety onto host materials and underscore the importance of considering the morphology of hosts in the design of efficient PHOLEDs.

Abstract
Organic semiconductors can be designed and constructed in π-stacked structures instead of the conventional π-conjugated structures. Through-space interaction (TSI) occurs in π-stacked optoelectronic materials. Thus, unlike electronic coupling along the conjugated chain, the functional groups can stack closely to facilitate spatial electron communication. Using π-stacked motifs, chemists and materials scientists can find new ways for constructing materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), as well as enhanced molecular conductance. Organic optoelectronic devices based on π-stacked molecules have exhibited very promising performance, with some of them exceeding π-conjugated analogues. Recently, reports on various organic π-stacked structures have grown rapidly, prompting this review. Representative molecular scaffolds and newly developed π-stacked systems could stimulate more attention on through-space charge transfer the well-known through-bond charge transfer. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for utilizing and improving particular materials are discussed. The previous achievements and upcoming prospects may provide new insights into the theory, materials, and devices in the field of organic semiconductors.

Abstract
An air- and moisture-stable helical radical with seven six- and five-membered rings arranged alternately was synthesized by cyclizations in a suitably ortho,ortho'-substituted terphenyl and re-establishment of its conjugation. Mesityl groups at the five-membered rings prevent radical reactions. This cyclopenta-fused polyaromatic hydrocarbon (CP-PAH) was characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis, EPR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and by cyclic voltammetry. Further properties and spectra were determined by quantum chemical calculation (spin densities, orbital energies, UV/Vis/NIR and ECD spectra). It turned out that this radical is best described with its radical centre being in the outer five-membered rings, which allows for the largest number of fully intact benzene rings. Its triradical character is rather small and can be neglected. The five-membered rings show significant antiaromatic character, which is highest in the central ring.

Abstract
Organic molecular semiconductors have been paid great attention due to their advantages of low-temperature processability, low fabrication cost, good flexibility, and excellent electronic properties. As a typical example of five-ring-fused organic semiconductors, a single crystal of pentacene shows a high mobility of up to 40 cm2 V-1 s-1, indicating its potential application in organic electronics. However, the photo- and optical instabilities of pentacene make it unsuitable for commercial applications. But, molecular engineering, for both the five-ring-fused building block and side chains, has been performed to improve the stability of materials as well as maintain high mobility. Here, several groups (thiophenes, pyrroles, furans, etc.) are introduced to design and replace one or more benzene rings of pentacene and construct novel five-ring-fused organic semiconductors. In this review article, ∼500 five-ring-fused organic prototype molecules and their derivatives are summarized to provide a general understanding of this catalogue material for application in organic field-effect transistors. The results indicate that many five-ring-fused organic semiconductors can achieve high mobilities of more than 1 cm2 V-1 s-1, and a hole mobility of up to 18.9 cm2 V-1 s-1 can be obtained, while an electron mobility of 27.8 cm2 V-1 s-1 can be achieved in five-ring-fused organic semiconductors. The HOMO-LUMO levels, the synthesis process, the molecular packing, and the side-chain engineering of five-ring-fused organic semiconductors are analyzed. The current problems, conclusions, and perspectives are also provided.

Abstract
Herein disclosed is the first example of diarylation/annulation of benzoic acids via an iridium catalyst system. This protocol provides a step-economic and highly efficient pathway to 1-aryl, 1,3-diaryl, 1,7-diaryl and 1,3,7-triaryl spirobifluorenes from readily available starting materials. The applications of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as pure hydrocarbon (PHC) hosts for red, green, and blue (RGB) phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were explored. Due to high triplet energies, 1,3-diaryl spirobifluorenes exhibit the potential as the host material of blue PhOLEDs. 1,7-Diaryl spirobifluorene can serve as the host of green PhOLEDs. 1,3,7-Triaryl spirobifluorene is a high-performance host for red PhOLEDs, which exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 27.3 %. This work not only exemplifies the great potential of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as PHC hosts, but also offers a new approach for the synthesis of these PHC hosts.

Abstract
Synthesis of new chromium(II) complexes with chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand [OO]Ph (H2[OO]Ph = [1,1′:4′,1′’-terphenyl]-2,2′’-diylbis(diphenylmethanol)) and their subsequent reactivity in the context of catalytic production of carbodiimides from azides and isocyanides are described. Two different Cr(II) complexes are obtained, as a function of the crystallization solvent: mononuclear Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 (in toluene/THF, THF = tetrahydrofuran) and dinuclear Cr2([OO]Ph)2 (in CH2Cl2/THF). The electronic structure and bonding in Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 were probed by density functional theory calculations. Isolated Cr2([OO]Ph)2 undergoes facile reaction with 4-MeC6H4N3, 4-MeOC6H4N3, or 3,5-Me2C6H3N3 to yield diamagnetic Cr(VI) bis(imido) complexes; a structure of Cr[OO]Ph(N(4-MeC6H4))2 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The reaction of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 with bulkier azides N3R (MesN3, AdN3) forms paramagnetic products, formulated as Cr[OO]Ph(NR). The attempted formation of a Cr–alkylidene complex (using N2CPh2) instead forms chromium(VI) bis(diphenylmethylenehydrazido) complex Cr[OO]Ph(NNCPh2)2. Catalytic formation of carbodiimides was investigated for the azide/isocyanide mixtures containing various aryl azides and isocyanides. The formation of carbodiimides was found to depend on the nature of organoazide: whereas bulky mesitylazide led to the formation of carbodiimides with all isocyanides, no carbodiimide formation was observed for 3,5-dimethylphenylazide or 4-methylphenylazide. Treatment of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 or H2[OO]Ph with NO+ leads to the formation of [1,2-b]-dihydroindenofluorene, likely obtained via carbocation-mediated cyclization of the ligand.

The development of a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) exciplex with high energy is of great significance in achieving highly efficient blue, green, and red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for use in full-color displays and white lighting. Highly efficient and stable blue and green phosphorescent OLEDs were demonstrated by employing a TADF exciplex (energy: 2.9 eV) based on 4-substituted aza-9,9'-spirobifluorenes (aza-SBFs). Blue PhOLEDs demonstrated a maximum current efficiency (CE) of 47.9 cd A-1 and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.5% at 1300 cd m-2 (2.5 times the values of aza-SBF-based systems), with the best blue PhOLED demonstrating a CE, power efficiency (PE) and EQE of 60.3 cd A-1, 52.7 lm W-1, and 26.2%, respectively. Green PhOLEDs exhibited a CE of 78.1 cd A-1 and EQE of 22.5% at 9360 cd m-2, with the best green PhOLED exhibiting a maximum CE, PE, and EQE of 87.4 cd A-1, 101.6 lm W-1, and 24.5%, respectively. The device operational lifetime was improved over 17-fold compared to reference devices because of the high thermal stability of the materials and full utilization of the TADF exciplex energy, indicating their potential for application in commercial OLEDs.

Abstract
Nanorings, which are macrocycles possessing radially directed π-orbitals have shown fantastic development in the last ten years. Unravelling their unusual electronic properties has been one of the driving forces of this research field. However, and despite promising properties, their incorporation in organic electronic devices remains very scarce. In this work, we aim to contribute to bridge the gap between organic electronics and nanorings by reporting the synthesis, the structural and electronic properties and the incorporation in an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) of a cyclic tetracarbazole, namely [4]cyclo-N-ethyl-2,7-carbazole ([4]C-Et-Cbz). The structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties have been compared to those of structurally related analogues [4]cyclo-9,9-diethyl-2,7-fluorene [4]C-diEt-F (with carbon bridges) and [8]-cycloparaphenylene [8]CPP (without any bridge) in order to shed light on the impact of the bridging in nanorings. This work shows that nanorings can be used as an active layer in an OFET and provides a first benchmark in term of OFET characteristics for this type of molecules.

Abstract
Two isomers of 9,10-dihydro- as-indacenodithiophenes (DIDTs) and the corresponding diketones having an as-indacene core were synthesized. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were investigated, revealing that they depend on the direction of the fusion of the thiophene rings. For the DIDTs, the effect of the mode of ring fusion on the physical properties is discussed by comparison with the previously reported derivatives of DIDT isomers with an s-indacene core. The observed difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the DIDT isomers is ascribed to the efficiency of π-conjugation, which depends on α- or β-linkage between the terminal thiophenes with the central benzene ring. In addition, the effect of the peripheral aromatic ring (thiophene or benzene) is elucidated by comparison with indeno[2,1- a]fluorene (DIF) bearing an as-indacene core. The HOMO levels of DIDTs are significantly raised compared to that of structurally related DIF because of electron-donating character of the thiophene rings. For the DIDT diketones, structural effect due to the proximate carbonyl groups is discussed by comparison with the isomers with remote carbonyl groups. In diketones bearing proximate carbonyl groups, the LUMO levels are destabilized owing to antibonding interaction between the carbonyl oxygen atoms, resulting in approach of the LUMO and LUMO+1 energy levels.

Abstract
Bridged oligophenylenes are very important organic semiconductors (OSCs) in organic electronics (OE). The fluorene unit, which is a bridged biphenyl, is the spearhead of this class of materials and has, over the last 20 years, led to fantastic breakthroughs in organic light-emitting diodes. Dihydroindenofluorenes belong to the family of bridged terphenyls and can be viewed as the fusion of a fluorene unit with an indene fragment. Dihydroindenofluorenes have also appeared as very promising building blocks for OE applications. In the dihydroindenofluorene family, there are five positional isomers, with three different phenyl linkages ( para/ meta/ ortho) and two different ring bridge arrangements ( anti/ syn). We have focused on the concept of positional isomerism. Indeed, the structural differences of the dihydroindenofluorenyl cores lead to unusual electronic properties, which our group has described since 2006, thanks to the five dispirofluorene-indenofluorene positional isomers (dihydroindenofluorenes substituted on the bridges by fluorenyl units). 6,12-Dihydroindeno[1,2- b]fluorene (the para-anti isomer) is constructed on a p-terphenyl core and possesses an anti geometry. Although this isomer has been widely investigated over the last 20 years, studies of the four other isomers remain very scarce. 11,12-Dihydroindeno[2,1- a]fluorene (the para-syn isomer) is also built on a bridged p-terphenyl core but possesses a syn geometry. This particular geometry has been advantageously used by our group to drastically tune the electronic properties, and this isomer has emerged as a promising scaffold to obtain stable blue emission arising from conformationally controllable intramolecular excimers. These preliminary studies have shown the crucial influence of the geometry on the electronic properties of the dihydroindenofluorenes. Modification of the arrangement of the phenyl linkages from para to meta provides the meta isomers, namely, 7,12-dihydroindeno[1,2- a]fluorene (the meta-anti isomer) and 5,7-dihydroindeno[2,1- b]fluorene (the meta-syn isomer). With these two regioisomers, the strong impacts of both the linkage and the geometry on the electronic properties have been particularly highlighted over the years. The last positional isomer of the family is 5,8-dihydroindeno[2,1- c]fluorene, which possesses a central o-terphenyl backbone and a syn geometry. This isomer is unique because of its ortho linkage, which induces a particular helicoidal turn of the dihydroindenofluorenyl core. Using a structure-property relationship approach, in the present Account we describe the molecular diversity of the five dispirofluorene-indenofluorene positional isomers and the consequences both in terms of their organic synthesis and electronic properties. This Account shows how positional isomerism can be a powerful tool to tune the electronic properties of OSCs.

Abstract
The incorporation of spatially oriented aromatic motifs in rigid molecular platforms is of great interest for the design of organic electronic materials. These structures can create unusual packing patterns and charge transport properties in the solid state which are not possible for simple planar structures. Herein, we showed that the novel dispiro and propellane motifs were successfully used as robust molecular platforms for the construction of host materials (TPA, Cz, SF, and SO). The propellane derivative with three functional groups arranged in the staggered conformation was studied for the first time as the host for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The green and red phosphorescent OLEDs hosted by these dispiro and propellane derivatives exhibited excellent electroluminescence performance. Particularly, the red OLED hosted by the propellane-type SF achieved maximum efficiencies of 47.3 cd A-1, 40.2 lm W-1, and 26.6% and 97.6 cd A-1, 77.8 lm W-1, and 27.0% for the green OLED without any light out-coupling enhancement. These results suggest that the dispiro and propellane molecular platforms have great potential in the construction of OLED materials.

Abstract
We report herein a detailed structure-properties relationship study of the first examples of electron-rich 4-substituted spirobifluorenes for organic electronic applications, namely, 4-phenyl-N-carbazole-spirobifluorene (4-PhCz-SBF) and 4-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-spirobifluorene (4-Ph(OMe)3-SBF). The incorporation of the electron-rich moieties in the ortho position of the biphenyl linkage (position C4) induces unique properties, very different from those previously described in the literature for this family of semiconductors. Both dyes can be readily synthesized, possess high triplet energies and excellent thermal stability, and their HOMO energy levels are highly increased compared to those of other 4-substituted SBFs. We also provide in this work the first rationalization of the peculiar fluorescence of 4-substituted SBFs. Finally, the present dyes have been successfully incorporated as host in green and blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes with high performance either for the green (EQE of 20.2%) or the blue color (EQE of 9.6%). These performances are, to the best of our knowledge, among the highest reported to date for 4-substituted SBF derivatives.

Abstract
A novel FeCl3-mediated oxidative spirocyclization for construction of a new class of di-spirolinked π-conjugated molecules, dispiro[fluorene-9,5'-indeno[2,1-a]indene-10',9''-fluorene]s (DSFIIFs), has been reported. The combination of FeCl3 with FeO(OH) triggered an unprecedented double one-electron oxidation of difluorenylidene diarylethanes to afford the corresponding dispirocycles in high yields. The highest fluorescence quantum yield was up to 0.94 in solution. This protocol is also applicable to the synthesis of the non-spirolinked dihydroindenoindenes.

Abstract
Having reference to an elongated structural modification of 2,2′-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)biphenyl, (I), the two 1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl-based diol hosts 2,2′′-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl, C44H34O2, (II), and 2,2′′-bis[hydroxybis(4-methylphenyl)methyl]-1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl, C48H42O2, (III), have been synthesized and studied with regard to their crystal structures involving different inclusions,i.e.(II) with dimethylformamide (DMF), C44H34O2·C2H6NO, denoted (IIa), (III) with DMF, C48H42O2·C2H6NO, denoted (IIIa), and (III) with acetonitrile, C48H42O2·CH3CN, denoted (IIIb). In the solvent-free crystals of (II) and (III), the hydroxy H atoms are involved in intramolecular O—H...π hydrogen bonding, with the central arene ring of the terphenyl unit acting as an acceptor. The corresponding crystal structures are stabilized by intermolecular C—H...π contacts. Due to the distinctive acceptor character of the included DMF solvent species in the crystal structures of (IIa) and (IIIa), the guest molecule is coordinated to the hostviaO—H...O=C hydrogen bonding. In both crystal structures, infinite strands composed of alternating host and guest molecules represent the basic supramolecular aggregates. Within a given strand, the O atom of the solvent molecule acts as a bifurcated acceptor. Similar to the solvent-free cases, the hydroxy H atoms in inclusion structure (IIIb) are involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonding, and there is thus a lack of host–guest interaction. As a result, the solvent molecules are accommodated as C—H...N hydrogen-bonded inversion-symmetric dimers in the channel-like voids of the host lattice.

Abstract
A new route to various substituted fluoren-9-ones has been developed via an efficient Pd-catalyzed carbonylative multiple C-C bond formation. Under a CO atmosphere, using commercially available aryl halides and arylboronic acids as substrates, this three-component reaction proceeded smoothly in moderate to excellent yields with good functional-group compatibility. The mechanistic investigations suggested a sequential process for the reaction that forms o-bromobiaryls in the first stage followed by a cyclocarbonylation reaction. This chemistry has been successfully extended to construct ladder-type oligo-p-phenylene cores.

Abstract
This work reports the first structure-properties relationship study of ortho [2,1-c]-, meta [1,2-a]-, and para [1,2-b]dihydroindenofluorenes, highlighting the influence of bridge rigidification on the electronic properties. This study has made it possible to devise an extended π-conjugated molecule with both a high triplet state energy level and excellent thermal and morphological stability. As a proof of concept, dihydroindenofluorenes were used as the host in sky-blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) with high performance.

Abstract
The fate of the aryl gold(I) carbenes generated by retro-Buchner reaction of ortho-substituted 7-aryl-1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes is dependent on the constitution of the ortho substituent. Indenes and fluorenes are obtained by intramolecular reaction of highly electrophilic gold(I) carbenes with alkenes and arenes. According to density functional theory calculations, the gold-catalyzed retro-Buchner process occurs stepwise, although the two carbon-carbon cleavages occur on a rather flat potential energy surface.
