Self-Assembly in Helical Columnar Mesophases and Luminescence of Chiral 1H-Pyrazoles

Synthesis of Methylene-Bridged Trifluoromethyl Azoles Using 5-(1,2,3-Triazol-1-yl)enones

A protocol for synthesizing triazole-containing pyrazolines and pyrazoles selectively using trifluoromethylated 5-(1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)enones as starting materials, is reported. The selectivity of the reaction was controlled by the nature of the hydrazine or derivative used: free hydrazines furnished the 1,5-regiosiomer exclusively in yields up to 98%, whereas protected hydrazines provided the 1,3-regioisomer in yields up to 77%. To demonstrate the synthetic versatility of the triazole-based enone, reactions with other unsymmetrical dinucleophiles (hydroxylamine hydrochloride and S-methyl isothiourea sulfates) allowed the selective preparation of triazole-containing isoxazoline and pyrimidine rings.

The Role of the 1,2,3-Triazolyl Heterocycle in the Helical Columnar Assembly and Electric Field Response

Here, we have proven the role of the 1,2,3-triazolyl group in the helical assembly and electric field (E-field) response upon comparing liquid crystal analogs 1 and 2 based on 1,2,3-triazolyl and 1,3,4-oxadiazolyl linkers, respectively. An ordered helical column was only observed in 1, driven by the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the adjacent triazolyl nitrogen and hydrogen atoms. X-ray diffraction and energy simulations indicate that the helical column is a 11₂ helix and the helical axis does not coincide with the center of the molecular long axis. The key for the formation of the helical column is the tilted conformation of 1 originating from the steric repulsion between the triazolyl C-H and C-H of the aromatic core. Analysis of the dynamics in the simple hexagonal columnar phase revealed that the in-plane rotational motion of the triazolyl linker (1) is allowed, while the oxadiazolyl linker of 2 has limited conformational flexibility. A uniform alignment under an E-field only occurs in 1, demonstrating the requirement for conformational flexibility in the polar linker. This alignment enhances the electric conductance of 1 by approximately two-fold.

On the Structure and Chiral Aggregation of Liquid Crystalline Star-Shaped Triazines H-Bonded to Benzoic Acids

The ability of a star-shaped tris(triazolyl)triazine derivative to hierarchically build supramolecular chiral columnar organizations through the formation of H-bonded complexes with benzoic acids was studied from a theoretical and experimental point of view. The combined study has been done at three different levels including the study of the structure of the triazine core, the association with benzoic acids in stoichiometry 1:3, and the assembly of 1:3 complexes in helical aggregates. Although the star-shaped triazine core crystallizes in a non-C₃ conformation, the C₃ -symmetric conformation is theoretically predicted to be more stable and gives rise to a favorable C₃ supramolecular 1:3 complex upon the interaction with three benzoic acids in their voids. In addition, calculations at different levels (DFT, PM7, and MM3) for the 1:3 host-guest complex predict the formation of large stable columnar helical aggregates stabilized by the compact packing of the interstitial acids by π-π and CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. The acids restrict the movement of the the star-shaped triazine cores along the stacking axis causing a template effect in the self-assembly of the complex. Theoretical predictions correlate with experimental results, since the interaction with achiral or chiral 3,4,5-(4-alkoxybenzyloxy)benzoic acids gives rise to supramolecular complexes that organize in bulk hexagonal columnar mesophases stable at room temperature with intracolumnar order. The existence of supramolecular chirality in the mesophase was determined for complexes formed by acids derived from (S)-2-octanol. Chiral aggregation was also evidenced for complexes formed in dodecane.

Cascade and multicomponent synthesis of structurally diverse 2-(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines and polysubstituted pyrazoles

The cascade reaction between N-tosylhydrazones and 2-alkynylpyridines leads to 2-(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines, important structural motifs in ligands for transition metals and bioactive molecules. When the reaction is conducted with 2,6-diethynylpyridine, the important 2,6-bis(pyrazolyl)pyridines are obtained, featuring the arrangement of tridentate and also pentadentate ligands. A novel three-component version of the reaction has been designed, which involves the use of α-bromo-N-tosylhydrazones, alkynylpyridines and NH-azoles. The generality of the multicomponent reaction is further illustrated by the preparation of different polysubstituted pyrazoles by employing an array of terminal alkynes. In these multicomponent reactions, complex molecules featuring three different heterocycles are assembled in a single step from commercial materials, enabling the fast generation of molecular diversity.

Ferroelectrically Switching Helical Columnar Assembly Comprising Cisoid Conformers of a 1,2,3-Triazole-based Liquid Crystal

The 1,2,3-triazole molecule, which is a product of click chemistry, possesses a high dipole moment and can be a useful polar motif for ferroelectric columnar liquid crystal (LC) materials-though it has not been used to date. Herein, we report the helical assembly and ferroelectric switching properties of a columnar liquid crystal comprising a naphthalene core and 1,2,3-triazolyl linkages. The molecule assembles into a double-stranded helical columnar LC structure (Col_hel ). The X-ray simulations of cisoid and transoid columnar models suggest that the helical assembly comprises cisoid conformers with a non-zero dipole moment. The helical columns in the Col_hel phase are aligned homeotropically under an electric field. The ferroelectric switching of the axial polarization can be observed in the temperature range of 105-115 °C in the Col_hel phase, wherein the triazolyl hydrogen bonding along the column axis is weakened. The ferroelectric switching event is attributed to the rotation of the polar triazolyl units in response to the electric field.

Chiral Side Groups Trigger Second Harmonic Generation Activity in 3D Octupolar Bipyrimidine-Based Organic Liquid Crystals

The design of efficient noncentrosymmetric materials remains the ultimate goal in the field of organic second-order nonlinear optics. Unlike inorganic crystals currently used in second-order nonlinear optical applications, organic materials are an attractive alternative owing to their fast electro-optical response and processability, but their alignment into noncentrosymmetric film remains challenging. Here, symmetry breaking by judicious functionalization of 3D organic octupoles allows the emergence of multifunctional liquid crystalline chromophores which can easily be processed into large, flexible, thin, and self-oriented films with second harmonic generation responses competitive to the prototypical inorganic KH₂ PO₄ crystals. The liquid-crystalline nature of these chiral organic films also permits the modulation of the nonlinear optical properties owing to the sensitivity of the supramolecular organization to temperature, leading to the development of tunable macroscopic materials.

Supramolecular Columnar Liquid Crystals with Tapered-Shape Simple Pyrazoles Obtained by Efficient Henry/Michael Reactions

A straightforward synthesis of mesogenic pyrazoles starting from benzaldehydes by a combination of efficient Henry and Michael reactions led to novel supramolecular liquid crystals. The mesogens are fluorescent 3,5-dimethyl-4-(di or trialkoxyphenyl)pyrazoles and, in spite of the tapered shape of these molecules and their structural simplicity (only one phenyl ring), columnar liquid-crystal phases were formed that are stable at room temperature. The self-assembled structure was studied by XRD and the columnar cross section contains two molecules on average with an antiparallel arrangement of pyrazoles interacting through hydrogen bonds. In contrast, the single-crystal structure of a trimethoxy analog did not show hydrogen-bonded pyrazoles but chains of head-to-tail arranged molecules.

Induced stabilization of columnar phases in binary mixtures of discotic liquid crystals

Three discotic liquid-crystalline binary mixtures, characterized by their extent of bidispersity in molecular thickness, were investigated with molecular dynamics simulations. Each equimolar mixture contained A-type (thin) and B-type (thick) discogens. The temperature-dependence of the orientational order parameter reveals that A-type liquid samples produce ordered phases more readily, with the (hexagonal) columnar phase being the most structured variant. Moderately and strongly bidisperse mixtures produce globally-segregated samples for temperatures corresponding to ordered phases; the weakly bidisperse mixture displays microheterogeneities. Ordered phases in the B-type liquid are induced partially by the presence of the A-type fluid. In the moderately bidisperse mixture, order is induced through orientational frustration: a mixed prenematic-like phase precedes global segregation to yield nematic and columnar mesophases upon further cooling. In the strongly bidisperse mixture, order is induced less efficiently through a paranematic-like mechanism: a highly-ordered A-type fluid imparts order to B-type discogens found at the interface of a fully-segregated sample. This ordering effect permeates into the disordered B-type domain until nematic and columnar phases emerge upon further cooling. At sufficiently low temperatures, all samples investigated exhibit the (hexagonal) columnar mesophase.

Sequential phase transformation of propeller-like C3-symmetric liquid crystals from a helical to ordered to disordered hexagonal columnar structure

In this paper, we report thermally induced intercolumnar phase transitions of C3-symmetric liquid crystals (LCs) bearing a triazole-based propeller-like aromatic mesogen. Since the constituting aromatic rings are conjugated through rotatable single bonds, the mesogenic shape is tuneable depending on the degree of conformational motion. Molecule 1 with ninefold octyl peripheries shows a hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase transition from ordered mesogenic stacking to disordered mesogenic stacking upon heating. On the other hand, molecule 2 with sixfold octyl peripheries displays a helical hexagonal columnar phase with the P6/mmm space group at ambient temperature as well as the ordered and disordered hexagonal columnar phases at higher temperatures. The intracolumnar helical order can be understood by an interdigitated stacking of the propeller-like mesogens along the columnar axis and the optimized space-filling. Notably, all the intercolumnar phase transformations in this study are revealed as second-order transitions. The thermodynamic nature agrees well with the fact that the conformational motions of the C3-symmetric aromatic mesogen change abruptly with each columnar transition.
