Abstract
The nature of the bonding between a neutral group 12 member (Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3) ring and a noble gas atom was explored using quantum chemical simulations. Natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, and molecular electrostatic potential surface analysis were also used to investigate the type of interaction between the noble gas atom and the metal rings (Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3). The Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3 rings are bonded to the noble gas through non-covalent interactions, which was revealed by the non-covalent interaction index. Additionally, energy decomposition analysis reveals that dispersion energy is the key factor in stabilizing these systems.

Abstract
We introduce a non-orthogonal configuration interaction approach to investigate nuclear quantum effects on energies and densities of confined fermionic nuclei. The Hamiltonian employed draws parallels between confined systems and many-electron atoms, where effective non-Coulombic potentials represent the interactions of the trapped particles. One advantage of this method is its generality, as it offers the potential to study the nuclear quantum effects of various confined species affected by effective isotropic or anisotropic potentials. As a first application, we analyze the quantum states of two 3 He atoms encapsulated in C60 . At the Hartree-Fock level, we observe the breaking of spin and spatial symmetries. To ensure wavefunctions with the correct symmetries, we mix the broken-symmetry Hartree-Fock states within the non-orthogonal configuration interaction expansion. Our proposed approach predicts singly and triply degenerate ground states for the singlet (para-3 He2 @C60 ) and triplet (ortho-3 He2 @C60 ) nuclear spin configurations, respectively. The ortho-3 He2 @C60 ground state is 5.69 cm-1 higher in energy than the para-3 He2 @C60 ground state. The nuclear densities obtained for these states exhibit the icosahedral symmetry of the C60 embedding potential. Importantly, our calculated energies for the lowest 85 states are in close agreement with perturbation theory results based on a harmonic oscillator plus rigid rotor model of 3 He2 @C60 .

Abstract
Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to investigate the nature of the bonding between a neutral Be3 ring and noble gas atom. Electronic structure calculation for these complexes was carried out at different computational levels in association with natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, electron localization function, symmetry adapted perturbation theory, and molecular electrostatic potential surface analysis of Be3 complexes. The Be atoms in the Be3 moiety are chemically bonded to one another, with the BeBe bond dissociation energy being ~125 kJ mol-1 . The Be3 ring interacts with the noble gases through non-covalent interactions. The binding energies of the noble gas atoms with the Be3 ring increases with increase in their atomic number. The non-covalent interaction index, density overlap region indicator and independent gradient model analyses reveal the presence of non-covalent inter-fragment interactions in the complexes. Energy decomposition analysis reveals that dispersion plays the major role towards stabilizing these systems.

Abstract
Synthesis of Ar@C60 is described, using a route in which high-pressure argon filling of an open-fullerene and photochemical desulfinylation are the key steps for >95% encapsulation of the noble gas. Enrichment by recycling HPLC leads to quantitative incorporation of argon in the product endofullerene, with a mass recovery of tens of milligrams, allowing the first characterisation of fine structure in the solution 13C NMR spectrum.

Abstract
An open-cage fullerene incorporating phosphorous ylid and carbonyl group moieties on the rim of the orifice can be filled with gases (H2 , He, Ne) in the solid state, and the cage opening then contracted in situ by raising the temperature to complete an intramolecular Wittig reaction, trapping the atom or molecule inside. Known transformations complete conversion of the product fullerene to C60 containing the endohedral species. As well as providing an improved synthesis of large quantities of 4 He@C60 , H2 @C60 , and D2 @C60 , the method allows the efficient incorporation of expensive gases such as HD and 3 He, to prepare HD@C60 and 3 He@C60 . The method also enables the first synthesis of Ne@C60 by molecular surgery, and its characterization by crystallography and 13 C NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The effect of substitution in the dodecahedrane (C20 H20 ) cage on bonding in the confined He dimer is analyzed. The HeHe distances inside the halogenated dodecahedrane C20 X20 (X = FBr) cages are found to be less than half of that in the free He dimer. Comparing the equilibrium structure of He2 @C20 H20 with He2 @C20 X20 at ωB97XD/def2-TZVPP level, it is found that the He-He distances are relatively larger in the latter cases indicating the influence of halogen groups on the interaction between the cage and the trapped He pair. The viability of the He2 @C20 X20 complexes is reflected in the presence of a very high activation energy barrier against the thermochemically feasible dissociation process producing free He2 and C20 X20 . Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) approach reveals a partial covalent interaction between He pair.

Abstract
This review focuses on the available experimental and theoretical investigations on noble gas (Ng) endohedral fullerenes, addressing essential questions related to the mutual effects that confinement of one or more Ng atoms induces on the electronic structure, bonding, and different properties of fullerenes. It also summarizes the different contributions to the mechanisms of formation and decomplexation, the reactivity towards Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, the chemical bonding situation of Ng endohedral fullerenes, and the interactions that dominate within these systems.

Abstract
Noble gas can be no noble in certain situations from the perspective of structure, bonding, and reactivity. These situations could be extreme experimental conditions or others. In this contribution, we systematically investigate the impact of fullerene encapsulation on molecular structure and chemical reactivity of noble gas dimers (Ng2) in a few fullerene molecules. To that end, we consider He2, Ne2, and Ar2 dimers encapsulated in C50, C60, and C70 fullerenes. We unveil that bond distances of Ng2 inside fullerene become substantially smaller and noble gas atoms become more electrophilic. In return, these noble gas dimers make fullerene molecules more nucleophilic. Using analytical tools from density functional theory, conceptual density functional theory, and information-theoretic approach, we appreciate the nature and origin of these structure and reactivity changes. The results and conclusions from this work should provide more new insights from the viewpoint of changing the perspectives of noble gas reactivity.

Abstract
The endohedral fullerene CH4 @C60 , in which each C60 fullerene cage encapsulates a single methane molecule, has been synthesized for the first time. Methane is the first organic molecule, as well as the largest, to have been encapsulated in C60 to date. The key orifice contraction step, a photochemical desulfinylation of an open fullerene, was completed, even though it is inhibited by the endohedral molecule. The crystal structure of the nickel(II) octaethylporphyrin/ benzene solvate shows no significant distortion of the carbon cage, relative to the C60 analogue, and shows the methane hydrogens as a shell of electron density around the central carbon, indicative of the quantum nature of the methane. The 1 H spin-lattice relaxation times (T1 ) for endohedral methane are similar to those observed in the gas phase, indicating that methane is freely rotating inside the C60 cage. The synthesis of CH4 @C60 opens a route to endofullerenes incorporating large guest molecules and atoms.

Abstract
Twenty years have already been passed since the endohedral fullerene's void ceaselessly attracts attention of both, experimentalists and theoreticians, computational chemists and physicists in particular, who direct their efforts on computer simulations of encapsulating atoms and molecules into fullerene void and on unraveling the arising bonding patterns. We review recent developments on the endohedral He2 @C60 fullerene, on its experimental observation and on related computational works. The two latter are the main concerns in the present work: on the one hand, there experimentally exists the He dimer embedded into C60 void. On the other, computational side, each He atom exhibits a negligible charge transfer to C60 resulting in that altogether, the He dimer exists as a fractionally charged (He+δ )2 . Whether there exists a bond between these two helium atoms is the key question of the present work. Since a bond is a two-body creature, we assert that it suffices to define the bond on the basis of Löwdin's postulate of a molecule which we invoke to investigate such formation of the He dimer in a given C60 void in terms of the HeHe potential energy well. It is analytically demonstrated that this well enables to maintain at least one bound (ground) state, and therefore, according to Löwdin's postulate which is naturally anticipated within quantum theory, we infer that (He+δ )2 is a molecule, a diatomic, where two heliums are bonded to each other. Using these arguments, we also propose to extend the concept of stability of endohedral fullerenes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis and characterisation of open fullerene (1) and its reduced form (2) in which CH4 and NH3 are encapsulated, respectively. The 1H NMR resonance of endohedral NH3 is broadened by scalar coupling to the quadrupolar 14n nucleus, which relaxes rapidly. This broadening is absent for small satellite peaks, which are attributed to natural abundance 15N. The influence of the scalar relaxation mechanism on the linewidth of the 1H ammonia resonance is probed by variable temperature NMR. A rotational correlation time of τc=1.5 ps. is determined for endohedral NH3, and of τc=57±5 ps. for the open fullerene, indicating free rotation of the encapsulated molecule. IR spectroscopy of NH3@2 at 5 K identifies three vibrations of NH3 (ν1, ν3 and ν4) redshifted in comparison with free NH3, and temperature dependence of the IR peak intensity indicates the presence of a large number of excited translational/ rotational states. Variable temperature 1H NMR spectra indicate that endohedral CH4 is also able to rotate freely at 223 K, on the NMR timescale. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of CH4@1 show both rotational and translational modes of CH4. Energy of the first excited rotational state (J=1) of CH4@1 is significantly lower than that of free CH4.

Abstract
The Diels-Alder reactivity of C59NH azafullerene has been explored computationally. The regioselectivity of the process and the factors controlling the reduced reactivity of this system with respect to the parent C60 fullerene have been analyzed in detail by using the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis method. It is found that the presence of the nitrogen atom and the CH fragment in the fullerene reduces the interaction between the deformed reactants along the entire reaction coordinate.

Abstract
We have computationally studied the factors governing the enhanced Diels-Alder reactivity of noble gas endohedral fullerenes Ng2@C60 when Ng = Ar, Kr, and Xe as compared to Ng = none, He, and Ne. To this end, we have employed the activation strain model of reactivity in combination with the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) method in DFT calculations on the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between Ng2@C60 and 1,3-butadiene. Our results indicate that when heavier noble gas dimers are introduced inside the C60 cage, dramatic effects on both the geometrical and electronic structure of the fullerenic cage occur leading to a remarkable enhanced interaction between the deformed reactants along the entire reaction coordinate.

Abstract
A complete stereocontrol of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of N-metalated azomethine ylides onto endohedral fullerene H2@C60 is reported for the first time. The stereodivergent synthesis of either the cis or the trans endohedral cycloadduct is achieved with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Selected points on the potential energy surface for the complexes Rg@C(60) (Rg = He, Ne, Ar, Kr) are calculated with various theoretical methods, like symmetry-adapted perturbation theory with monomers described by density functional theory (DFT-SAPT), supermolecular Møller-Plesset theory truncated on the second order (MP2), spin-component-scaled MP2 (SCS-MP2), supermolecular density functional theory with empirical dispersion correction (DFT+Disp), and the recently developed MP2C method that improves the MP2 method for long-range electron correlation effects. A stabilization of the endohedral complex is predicted by all methods, but the depth of the potential energy well is overestimated by the DFT+Disp and MP2 approaches. On the other hand, the MP2C model agrees well with DFT-SAPT, which serves as the reference. The performance of SCS-MP2 is mixed: it produces too low interaction energies for the two heavier guests, while its accuracy for He@C(60) and Ne@C(60) is similar to that of MP2C. Fitting formulas for the main interaction energy components, i.e. the dispersion and first-order repulsion energies are proposed, which are applicable for both endo- and exohedral cases. For all examined methods density fitting is used to evaluate two-electron repulsion integrals, which is indispensable to allow studies of noncovalent complexes of this size. It has been found that density-fitting auxiliary basis sets cannot be used in a black-box fashion for the calculation of the first-order SAPT electrostatic energy, and that the quality of these basis sets should be always carefully examined in order to avoid an unphysical long-range behavior.
