Abstract
Phthalocyanines and their double-decker complexes are interesting in designing rotative molecular machines, which are crucial for the development of molecular motors and gears. This study explores the design and synthesis of three bulky phthalocyanine ligands functionalized at the α-positions with phenothiazine or carbazole fragments, aiming to investigate dynamic rotational motions in these sterically hindered molecular complexes. Homoleptic and heteroleptic double-decker complexes were synthesized through the complexation of these ligands with Ce(IV). Notably, CeIV(Pc2)2 and CeIV(Pc3)2, both homoleptic complexes, exhibited blocked rotational motions even at high temperatures. The heteroleptic CeIV(Pc)(Pc3) complex, designed to lower symmetry, demonstrated switchable rotation along the pseudo-C4 symmetry axis upon heating the solution. Variable-temperature 1H-NMR studies revealed distinct dynamic behaviors in these complexes. This study provides insights into the rotational dynamics of sterically hindered double-decker complexes, paving the way for their use in the field of rotative molecular machines.

Abstract
In this study heteroleptic A7B type novel Lu(iii) and Eu(iii) lanthanide phthalocyanines (LnPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)]) with high extinction coefficients have been synthesized as candidate photosensitizers with reaction yields higher than 33%. The singlet oxygen quantum yields of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and EuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)], respectively, were measured 17% and 1.4% by the direct method in THF. The singlet oxygen quantum yield of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] in THF is the highest among lutetium(iii) bis-phthalocyanine complexes to date. The photodynamic efficacy of the heteroleptic lanthanide phthalocyanines was evaluated by measuring cell viabilities of A549 and BEAS-2B lung cells, selected to representing in vitro models for testing cancer and normal cells against potential drugs. The cell viabilities demonstrated concentration dependent behavior and were varied by the type of phthalocyanines complexes. Irradiation of the cells for 30 minutes with LED array at 660 nm producing flux of 0.036 J cm−2 s−1 increased cell death for LuPcPox-OAc, LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and ZnPc. The IC50 concentrations of LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and ZnPc were determined to be below 10 nM for both cell lines, agreeing very well with the singlet oxygen quantum yield measurements. These findings suggest that LuPc(Pox)[Pc′(AB3SH)] and particularly LuPcPox-OAc are promising drug candidates enabling lowered dose and shorter irradiation time for photodynamic therapy. Novel bis-lanthanide Lu(iii) and Eu(iii) phthalocyanine complexes have been designed/synthesized and tested their photodynamic efficacy for A549 and BEAS-2B cells in vitro conditions as candidate photosensitizers in PDT.![]()

Abstract
In the present study a novel water soluble double-decker phthalocyanine was synthesized and calf thymus DNA interaction of the synthesized double-decker phthalocyanine was investigated. 5-(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole substituted phthalonitrile 1 was prepared by a nucleophilic displacement reaction of 4-nitrophthalonitrile with 5-(3-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol. Lutetium(III) double-decker phthalocyanine 2 was prepared by cyclotetramerization of compound 1. Water soluble lutetium(III) double-decker phthalocyanine 3 was prepared with quaternarization of compound 2. The synthesized double-decker phthalocyanine and calf thymus DNA interaction was investigated with UV-vis titrimetric methods, gel electrophoresis, and viscosity measurements. The fluorometric ethidium bromide replacement assay was conducted to clarify the binding mode of water soluble double-decker phthalocyanine. The thermodynamic parameters for interaction, K, ΔG0, ΔH0 and ΔS0 were calculated between the temperature ranges of 25°C-75°C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study about a double-decker phthalocyanine and DNA interaction.

Abstract
We report original, selective, and efficient approaches to novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, namely homoleptic double- and triple-decker europium(III) complexes 2 and 3 with the A3 B-type phthalocyanine ligand (2,3-bis[2'-(2''-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa-n-butoxyphthalocyanine 1) bearing two anchoring diethyleneglycol chains terminated with OH groups. Their covalently linked nanoconjugates with mercaptosuccinic acid-capped ternary CdSeTe/CdTeS/ZnSeS quantum dots are prepared in the presence of an ethyl(dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide activating agent. Optical limiting (OL) properties of the obtained low-symmetry complexes and their conjugates with quantum dots (QDs) are measured for the first time by the open-aperture Z-scan technique (532 nm laser and pulse rate of 10 ns). For comparison, symmetrical double- and triple-decker EuIII octa-n-butoxyphthalocyaninates 5 and 6 and their mixtures with trioctylphosphine oxide-capped QDs are also synthesized and studied. It is revealed that both lowering of molecular symmetry and expansion of the π-electron system upon moving from double- to triple-decker complexes significantly improves the OL characteristics, making the low-symmetry triple-decker complex 3 the most efficient optical limiter in the studied family of sandwich complexes, affording 50 % lowering of light transmittance below 0.5 J cm-2 input fluence. Conjugation (both covalent and noncovalent) with QDs affords further enhancement of the OL properties of both double- and triple-decker complexes. Altogether, the obtained results contribute to the development of novel nonlinear optical materials for future nanoelectronic and optical device applications.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization and electrical properties of lanthanide metal based bis-phthalocyanines, {M[Pc-(β-HHT)4]2} (HHT:1-hydroxyhexane-3-ylthio){ M [Formula: see text] Lu[Formula: see text] (2), Eu[Formula: see text] (3), and Yb[Formula: see text] (4)}. The interaction of bis-phthalocyanines with Ag[Formula: see text] and Pd[Formula: see text] metal ions were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Thin films of bis-phthalocyanine molecules were prepared by spin-coating method. The surface morphology of thin films were performed with Atomic Force Microscopy as further investigate. The electrical transport properties of ITO/Pc/Al devices were investigated. At low voltages all the films showed an ohmic conduction, whereas at higher voltage levels the conduction is dominated by space charged limited conduction with exponential distribution of trapping levels. Measurements of current density as a function of inverse temperature at constant applied voltage yielded a hole mobility values, μp[Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] m2.sn[Formula: see text].V[Formula: see text] for lanthanium phthalocyanines. From the analysis of frequency, ω, dependence of electrical conductivity, σac. it was found that the [Formula: see text] obeys the power law given by σac = Aωs, in which the frequency exponent “s” decreases with temperature.

Abstract
A zinc and a free base phthalocyanine-fulleropyrrolidine dyad in which the chromophores are linked by a phenylethynyl group have been prepared using a new synthetic route, and their photoelectrochemical properties have been investigated. The zinc dyad is readily soluble in a variety of solvents, and its spectroscopic properties have been determined in toluene and benzonitrile. In toluene, excitation of the zinc phthalocyanine is followed by rapid establishment of an equilibrium between the phthalocyanine and fullerene excited states. These excited states decay mainly to the ground state and the respective triplet states. The fullerene triplet then transfers its energy to form the phthalocyanine triplet. About 20% of the phthalocyanine excited states lead to formation of a charge-separated state. In benzonitrile, the same decay pathways are observed, but photoinduced electron transfer is much faster, and generates the charge separated state with a quantum yield of ≥85%. The charge separated state has a lifetime of 2.8 ns in toluene and 94 ps in benzonitrile.

Abstract
The control of organic molecules, supramolecular complexes and donor-acceptor systems at interfaces is a key issue in the development of novel hybrid architectures for regulation of charge-carrier transport pathways in nanoelectronics or organic photovoltaics. However, at present little is known regarding the intricate features of stacked molecular nanostructures stabilized by noncovalent interactions. Here we explore at the single molecule level the geometry and electronic properties of model donor-acceptor dyads stabilized by van der Waals interactions on a single crystal Ag(111) support. Our combined scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and first-principles computational modeling study reveals site-selective positioning of C(60) molecules on Ce(TPP)(2) porphyrin double-decker arrays with the fullerene centered on the π-system of the top bowl-shaped tetrapyrrole macrocycle. Three specific orientations of the C(60) cage in the van der Waals complex are identified that can be reversibly switched by STM manipulation protocols. Each configuration presents a distinct conductivity, which accounts for a tristable molecular switch and the tunability of the intradyad coupling. In addition, STS data evidence electronic decoupling of the hovering C(60) units from the metal substrate, a prerequisite for photophysical applications.

Abstract
Phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads have being under intensive development and investigation during past decade. Strong absorption of the phthalocyanine chromophore in the red part of the spectrum and ability of the dyad to perform efficient photoinduced charge transfer in non-polar media make them particularly attractive for organic optoelectronic applications. This microreview will focus on covalently linked phthalocyanine-fullerene conjugates in solutions and solid nanostructures. The covalent bonding enables sufficient degree of control over mutual organization of the donor and acceptor parts, and makes possible to investigate the relationships between molecular structure and functioning of single molecules and molecular assemblies.

Abstract
Conjugated copolymer derivatives of poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) containing 10% of alkyne functionalities in the side chains have been prepared using the sulfinyl precursor route and the Rieke method, respectively. With the aim of expanding the absorption range of these conjugated polymers for their use in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer:fullerene solar cells, appropriate phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules have been covalently bound through a post-polymerization "click chemistry" reaction between the alkyne functionalities in the side chains of the copolymers and a Pc functionalized with an azide moiety. The resulting poly(p-phenylenevinylene)-Pc (PPV-Pc) material holds a 9 mol% content of Pcs, while the polythiophene-Pc material (PT-Pc) contains a 8 mol% of Pc-functionalization in the side chains. As expected, the presence of the Pc contributes to the extension of the absorption up to 700 nm. BHJ solar cells have been prepared using PPV-Pc and PT-Pc materials in combination with PCBM. Although the Pc absorption contributes to the generation of photocurrent, the overall power conversion efficiencies (PCE) obtained from these cells are lower than those obtained with BHJ P3HT:PCBM (1:1) and MDMO-PPV:PCBM (1:4) solar cells. A plausible explanation could be the moderate solubility of the PPV-Pc and PT-Pc materials that limits the processing into thin films.

Abstract
We have used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to manipulate heteroleptic phthalocyaninato, naphthalocyaninato, and porphyrinato double-decker (DD) molecules at the liquid-solid interface between 1-phenyloctane solvent and graphite. We employed nanografting of phthalocyanines with eight octyl chains to place these molecules into a matrix of heteroleptic DD molecules; the overlayer structure is epitaxial on graphite. We have also used nanografting to place DD molecules in matrices of single-layer phthalocyanines with octyl chains. Rectangular scans with a STM at low bias voltage resulted in the removal of the adsorbed DD molecular layer and substituted the DD molecules with bilayer-stacked phthalocyanines from phenyloctane solution. Single heteroleptic DD molecules with lutetium sandwiched between naphthalocyanine and octaethylporphyrin were decomposed with voltage pulses from the probe tip; the top octaethylporphyrin ligand was removed, and the bottom naphthalocyanine ligand remained on the surface. A domain of decomposed molecules was formed within the DD molecular domain, and the boundary of the decomposed molecular domain self-cured to become rectangular. We demonstrated a molecular "sliding block puzzle" with cascades of DD molecules on the graphite surface.
