Cyclization of Propargylic Amides: Mild Access to Oxazole Derivatives

Catalytic (4+2) Annulation via Regio- and Enantioselective Interception of in-situ Generated Alkylgold Intermediate

A regio- and stereoselective stepwise (4+2) annulation of N-propargylamides and α,β-unsaturated imines/ketones has been accomplished with synergetic catalysis by a combination of a gold-complex and a chiral quinine-derived squaramide (QN-SQA), leading to highly functionalized chiral tetrahydropyridines/dihydropyrans in good to high yields with generally excellent enantioselectivity. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations indicate that the in situ formed alkylgold species is the key intermediate in this transformation, and the amide group served as a traceless directing group in this highly selective transformation. This method complements the enantioselective (4+2) annulation of allene reagents, providing the formal internal C-C π-bond cycloaddition products, which is challenging and remains elusive.

Ferrocenyl Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes. Study of their Structural Features and the Influence of Bridging and Phosphane Ligands in a Catalytic Cyclization Reaction

The combination of the ferrocene moiety with gold(I) catalysis remains a relatively unexplored field. In this article, we delve into the synthesis, characterization, and potential catalytic activity of four complexes utilizing both monodentate and bidentate ferrocenyl diphenylphosphane ligands (ppf and dppf), coordinated with two gold(I) metal centers, linked by either chloride or pentafluorophenylthiolate bridging ligands. This leads to the formation of cationic "self-activated" precatalysts capable of initiating the catalytic cycle without the need for external additives. The catalytic activity of these complexes was assessed through a model reaction in gold(I) catalysis, specifically the cyclization of a N-propargylbenzamide to produce an oxazole. In addition, we studied and compared the influence exerted by both the phosphane and the bridging ligand on the performance of these catalysts.

Synthesis, Structure, Reactivity, and Intramolecular Donor-Acceptor Interactions in a Phosphinoferrocene Stibine and Its Corresponding Phosphine Chalcogenides and Stiboranes

Ferrocene-based phosphines equipped with additional functional groups are versatile ligands for coordination chemistry and catalysis. This contribution describes a new compound of this type, combining phosphine and stibine groups at the ferrocene backbone, viz. 1-(diphenylphosphino)-1'-(diphenylstibino)ferrocene (1). Phosphinostibine 1 and the corresponding P-chalcogenide derivatives Ph2P(E)fcSbPh2 (1E, fc = ferrocene-1,1'-diyl, E = O, S, Se) were synthesized and further converted to the corresponding stiboranes Ph2P(E)fcSb(O2C6Cl4)Ph2 (6 and 6E) by oxidation with o-chloranil. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and theoretical methods. Both NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations confirmed the presence of P → Sb and P═O → Sb donor-acceptor interactions in 6 and 6O, triggered by the oxidation of the stibine moiety into Lewis acidic stiborane. The corresponding interactions in 6S and 6Se were of the same type but significantly weaker. A coordination study with AuCl as the model metal fragment revealed that the phosphine group acts as the "primary" coordination site, in line with its higher basicity. The obtained Au(I) complexes were applied as catalysts in the Au-catalyzed cyclization of N-propargylbenzamide and in the oxidative [2 + 2 + 1] cyclization of ethynylbenzene with acetonitrile and pyridine N-oxides. The catalytic results showed that the stibine complexes had worse catalytic performance than their phosphine counterparts, most likely due to the formation of weaker coordination bonds and hence poorer stabilization of the active metal species. Nevertheless, the stibine moiety could be used to fine-tune the properties of the ligated metal center by changing the oxidation state or substituents at the "remote" Sb atom.

Bimetallic tandem catalysis-enabled enantioselective cycloisomerization/carbonyl-ene reaction for construction of 5-oxazoylmethyl α-silyl alcohol

A bimetallic tandem catalysis-enabled enantioselective cycloisomerization/carbonyl-ene reaction was developed. The reaction proceeded well with a broad range of N-propargylamides and acylsilanes, affording the target chiral 5-oxazoylmethyl α-silyl alcohols in up to 95% yield and 99% ee under mild conditions. Importantly, this facile protocol was available for the late-stage modification of several bioactive molecules. Based on the mechanistic study and control experiments, a possible catalytic cycle and transition state are proposed to elucidate the reaction process and enantioinduction.

TBAI-Mediated Cyclization and Methylsulfonylation of Propargylic Amides with Dimethyl Sulfite

A tetramethylammonium iodide (TBAI)-mediated cyclization and methylsulfonylation of propargylic amides enabled by dimethyl sulfite as a SO₂ surrogate and methyl source have been developed. The transition metal-free and oxidant-free reaction provides a practical and efficient approach for the selective synthesis of methylsulfonyl oxazoles in moderate to excellent yields with good functional group compatibility.

Activation of metal-involved halogen bonds and classical halogen bonds in gold(I) catalysis

In gold(I) catalysis, the activation of Au(I) chloride catalysts via chloride abstraction and noncovalent interactions has become a research focus in organometallic catalysis. In this work, taking halogen bond donors (C₄H₂INO₂, C₆F₅I, C₈H₉O₂I) as activators for a Au(I) chloride catalyst (Ph₃PAuCl), the mechanism of the cyclization reaction of propargylic amide was investigated. It was found that there are two activation modes as design principles to obtain the catalytically active species Ph₃PAu⁺: the halogen bond donors activate the Cl atoms of Ph₃PAuCl to form X-I⋯Cl (X = C, N) classical halogen bonds and activate the Au atoms of Ph₃PAuCl to form X-I⋯Au (X = C, N) metal-involved halogen bonds. For the two activation modes, the mechanism of the cyclization reaction of propargylic amide has pathways: the chloride abstraction process of the first step and the 5-exo/6-endo cyclization process of the second step. Both activation modes show good activity for the cyclization reaction with the activation ability of classical halogen bonds being slightly stronger than that of the metal-involved halogen bonds, which is consistent with the strength of the X-I⋯Cl halogen bonds being slightly stronger than that of the X-I⋯Au halogen bonds. Therefore, both metal-involved halogen bonds and classical halogen bonds have important development prospects for the activation of catalysts in gold(I) catalysis.

(Z)-5-Benzylidene-4-phenyl-2-(p-tolyl)-4,5-dihydrooxazole

By strategic use of the valence difference between hard gold(III) and soft gold(I) catalysts, one-pot synthesis of (Z)-5-benzylidene-4-phenyl-2-(p-tolyl)-4,5-dihydrooxazole (15) from propargylic alcohol (9) and p-toluamide (13) was achieved via gold(III)-catalyzed propargylic substitution followed by gold(I)-catalyzed cyclization. The structure of 15 was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Ag-NHC Complexes in the π-Activation of Alkynes

Silver-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes play a special role in the field of transition-metal complexes due to (1) their prominent biological activity, and (2) their critical role as transfer reagents for the synthesis of metal-NHC complexes by transmetalation. However, the application of silver-NHCs in catalysis is underdeveloped, particularly when compared to their group 11 counterparts, gold-NHCs (Au-NHC) and copper-NHCs (Cu-NHC). In this Special Issue on Featured Reviews in Organometallic Chemistry, we present a comprehensive overview of the application of silver-NHC complexes in the p-activation of alkynes. The functionalization of alkynes is one of the most important processes in chemistry, and it is at the bedrock of organic synthesis. Recent studies show the significant promise of silver-NHC complexes as unique and highly selective catalysts in this class of reactions. The review covers p-activation reactions catalyzed by Ag-NHCs since 2005 (the first example of p-activation in catalysis by Ag-NHCs) through December 2022. The review focuses on the structure of NHC ligands and p-functionalization methods, covering the following broadly defined topics: (1) intramolecular cyclizations; (2) CO₂ fixation; and (3) hydrofunctionalization reactions. By discussing the role of Ag-NHC complexes in the p-functionalization of alkynes, the reader is provided with an overview of this important area of research and the role of Ag-NHCs to promote reactions that are beyond other group 11 metal-NHC complexes.

An MCM-41-immobilized dichloro(pyridine-2-carboxylato)gold(III) complex: an efficient and recyclable catalyst for the annulation of anthranils and ynamides

A new mesoporous MCM-41-immobilized dichloro(pyridine-2-carboxylato)gold(III) complex [MCM-41-PicAuCl₂] was synthesized via an addition reaction of a dichloro(3-hydroxypyridine-2-carboxylato)gold(III) complex to triethoxy(3-isocyanatopropyl)silane, followed by immobilization on MCM-41 and was characterized by different physico-chemical techniques. In the presence of 5 mol% of MCM-41-PicAuCl₂, the annulation reaction between anthranils and ynamides proceeded smoothly under mild conditions to afford diverse 6- or 5-formylindoles with high atom economy and good to excellent yields. This new heterogenized gold(III) complex can be easily recovered through a simple filtration process and recycled more than seven times without any apparent loss of its catalytic efficiency.

Gem-Diaurated Gold(III) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, Aurophilic Interaction, and Catalytic Activity

We present a protocol to synthesize air stable gem-diaurated gold(III) compounds from 1,3-diketones in a single cycloauration step with tetrachloroauric acid. So far related species were only accessible from phosphonium bis(ylide) ligands which hold the two gold atoms in close proximity. Lacking such a constraint, our compounds show the longest Au-Au distances of all gem-diaurated carbons, ranging from 3.26 to 3.32 Å. Modeling based on results of CCSD(T) calculations shows no stabilization by aurophilic interactions for our gold(III) systems, compared to 9.1 kcal/mol for gold(I) gem-diauration. This demonstrates no aurophilic interactions are needed for the isolation of air stable gem-diaurated gold(III) complexes. We show the new gem-diaurated gold(III) compounds are active in the gold-catalyzed phenol synthesis and highly active in the cycloisomerization of an N-propargylcarboxamide; here, we obtained the so far highest known TON of over 2500 per gold atom with respect to the oxazole formation.

Crystal Engineering of Supramolecular 1,4-Benzene Bisamides by Side-Chain Modification - Towards Tuneable Anisotropic Morphologies and Surfaces

Benzene bisamides are promising building blocks for supramolecular nano-objects. Their functionality depends on morphology and surface properties. However, a direct link between surface properties and molecular structure itself is missing for this material class. Here, we investigate this interplay for two series of 1,4-benzene bisamides with symmetric and asymmetric peripheral substitution. We elucidated the crystal structures, determined the nano-object morphologies and derived the wetting behaviour of the preferentially exposed surfaces. The crystal structures were solved by combining single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and computational modelling. Bulky side groups, here t-butyl groups, serve as a structure-directing motif into a packing pattern, which favours the formation of thin platelets. The use of slim peripheral groups on both sides, in our case linear perfluorinated, alkyl chains, self-assemble the benzene bisamides into a second packing pattern which leads to ribbon-like nano-objects. For both packing types, the preferentially exposed surfaces consist of the ends of the peripheral groups. Asymmetric substitution with bulky and slim groups leads to an ordered alternating arrangement of the groups exposed to the surface. This allows the hydrophobicity of the surfaces to be gradually altered. We thus identified two leitmotifs for molecular packings of benzene bisamides providing the missing link between the molecular structure, the anisotropic morphologies and adjustable surface properties of the supramolecular nano-objects.

From Waste to Green Applications: The Use of Recovered Gold and Palladium in Catalysis

The direct use in catalysis of precious metal recovery products from industrial and consumer waste is a very promising recent area of investigation. It represents a more sustainable, environmentally benign, and profitable way of managing the low abundance of precious metals, as well as encouraging new ways of exploiting their catalytic properties. This review demonstrates the feasibility and sustainability of this innovative approach, inspired by circular economy models, and aims to stimulate further research and industrial processes based on the valorisation of secondary resources of these raw materials. The overview of the use of recovered gold and palladium in catalytic processes will be complemented by critical appraisal of the recovery and reuse approaches that have been proposed.

Silver-Free Au(I) Catalysis Enabled by Bifunctional Urea- and Squaramide-Phosphine Ligands via H-Bonding

A library of gold(I) chloride complexes with phosphine ligands incorporating pendant (thio)urea and squaramide H-bond donors was prepared with the aim of promoting chloride abstraction from Au(I) via H-bonding. In the absence of silver additives, complexes bearing squaramides and trifluoromethylated aromatic ureas displayed good catalytic activity in the cyclization of N-propargyl benzamides, as well as in a 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization, a tandem cyclization-indole addition reaction and the hydrohydrazination of phenylacetylene. Kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate that the energetic span of the reaction is accounted by both the chloride abstraction step, facilitated by the bidentate H-bond donor via an associative mechanism, and the subsequent cyclization step.

Gold-Catalyzed One-Pot Synthesis of Polyfluoroalkylated Oxazoles from N-Propargylamides Under Visible-Light Irradiation

A gold-catalyzed synthesis of polyfluoroalkylated oxazoles from N-propargylamides under visible-light irradiation has been developed. These reactions display excellent compatibility of radicals and gold catalysts under visible-light irradiation. Mechanistic experiments indicate that polyfluoroalkyl iodides play a dual role in enhanced compatibility of radicals and gold catalysts through assisted protodeauration of vinyl gold and reactivated the gold catalyst. In addition, PPh₃ AuNTf₂ not only activates N-propargylamide to generate vinyl gold intermediate, but also greatly promotes homolysis of polyfluoroalkyl iodides under blue light irradiation.

Anion Chelation via Double Chalcogen Bonding: The Case of a Bis-telluronium Dication and Its Application in Electrophilic Catalysis via Metal-Chloride Bond Activation

Telluronium cations have long been known to engage their counteranions via secondary interactions. Yet, this property has rarely been exploited for anion binding. Motivated by such an application, we have now synthesized a bis-telluronium dication ([3]²⁺) that was obtained as a tetrafluoroborate salt by reaction of 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene-4,5-diboronic acid with phenoxatellurine difluoride and BF₃·OEt₂. As confirmed by the formation of Te-(μ-BF₄)-Te bridges in the structure of [3][BF₄]₂, [3]²⁺ functions as a bidentate Lewis acid toward anions. [3][BF₄]₂ has also been converted into the more exposed [3][BArF₂₄]₂ ([BArF₂₄]^- = [B(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)₄]^-). The latter, which readily ionizes Ph₃CCl, displays a chloride anion binding constant that exceeds that of a monofunctional model compound by almost 4 orders of magnitude. The unique properties of this new bis-telluronium dication are further highlighted by its ability to activate Ph₃PAuCl and cis-(Ph₃P)₂PtCl₂, leading to catalytic systems highly active in the cycloisomerization of propargylamide or enyne substrates.

Ligand-enforced intimacy between a gold cation and a carbenium ion: impact on stability and reactivity

Controlling the reactivity of transition metal complexes by positioning non-innocent functionalities around the catalytic pocket is a concept that has led to significant advances in catalysis. Here we describe our efforts toward the synthesis of dicationic phosphine gold complexes of general formula [(o-Ph₂P(C₆H₄)Carb)Au(tht)]²⁺ decorated by a carbenium moiety (Carb) positioned in the immediate vicinity of the gold center. While the most acidic examples of such compounds have limited stability, the dicationic complexes with Carb⁺ = 9-N-methylacridinium and Carb⁺ = [C(Ar^N)₂]⁺ (Ar^N = p-(C₆H₄)NMe₂) are active as catalysts for the cycloisomerization of N-propargyl-4-fluorobenzamide, a substrate chosen to benchmark reactivity. The dicationic complex [(o-Ph₂P(C₆H₄)C(Ar^N)₂)Au(tht)]²⁺, which also promotes hydroarylation and enyne cyclization reactions, displays a higher catalytic activity than its acridinium analog, indicating that the electrophilic reactivity of these complexes scales with the Lewis acidity of the carbenium moiety. These results support the role of the carbenium unit as a non-innocent functionality which can readily enhance the activity of the adjacent metal center. Finally, we also describe our efforts toward the generation and isolation of free γ-cationic phosphines of general formula [(o-Ph₂P(C₆H₄)Carb)]⁺. While cyclization into phosphonium species is observed for Carb⁺ = [C(Ar^N)₂]⁺, [C(Ph)(Ar^N)]⁺, and 9-xanthylium, [(o-Ph₂P(C₆H₄)-9-N-methylacridinium)]⁺ can be isolated as an air stable, biphilic derivative with uncompromised Lewis acidic and basic properties.

This work describes the synthesis of carbenium-based, γ-cationic phosphines and their coordination to Au(i) cations , leading to carbophilic catalysts whose activity is enhanced by the ligand-enforced convergence of the positively charged moieties.

Silica-Supported Phosphine-Gold Complexes as an Efficient Catalytic System for a Dearomative Spirocyclization

The combination of metal catalyst and inorganic silica frameworks provides a greener approach to recyclable catalysis. In this study, three phosphine-gold chloride complexes have been successfully covalently grafted onto chiral silica nanohelices. The resulting 3D ensembles showed chiroptical properties that allowed the monitoring of the supported ligands. The heterogeneous gold chloride catalysts in cooperation with silver triflate exhibited high reactivity in various reactions, especially in the spirocyclization of aryl alkynoate esters, for which a catalytic loading of 0.05 mol % could be employed. The heterogeneous catalysts could be easily recovered and recycled seven or eight times without any loss of efficiency. By adding more silver triflate, 25 cycles with full conversion were achieved owing to a complex catalytic system based on silica and metallic species.

Synthesis of Dendritic Glycoclusters and Their Applications for Supramolecular Gelation and Catalysis

Glycoclusters with three, four, and six arms of glycosyl triazoles were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The self-assembling properties of these molecules and their catalytic activity as ligands in copper-catalyzed azide and alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions were studied. The compounds with a lower number of branches exhibit excellent gelation properties and can function as supramolecular gelators. The resulting gels were characterized using optical microcopy and atomic force microscopy. The glycoconjugates containing six branches showed significant catalytic activity for copper sulfate mediated cycloaddition reactions. In aqueous solutions, 1 mol % of glycoclusters to substrates was efficient at accelerating these reactions. Several trimeric compounds were found to be capable of forming co-gels with the catalytically active hexameric compounds. Using the organogels formed by the glycoconjugates as supramolecular catalysts, efficient catalysis was demonstrated for several CuAAC reactions. The metallogels with CuSO₄ were also prepared as gel columns, which can be reused for the cycloaddition reactions several times. These include the preparation of a few glycosyl triazoles and aryl triazoles and isoxazoles. We expect that these sugar-based soft biomaterials will have applications beyond supramolecular catalysis for copper-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions. They may also be useful as ligands or gel matrixes for other metal-ion catalyzed organic reactions.

Dual H-bond activation of NHC-Au(i)-Cl complexes with amide functionalized side-arms assisted by H-bond donor substrates or acid additives

Novel approach with amide-tethered H-bond donor NHC ligands enabled Au(i)-catalysis via H-bonding. The plain NHC-Au(i)-Cl complex catalysed conversions of terminal N-propynamides to oxazolines, and enyne cycloisomerization with an acid additive, in DCM at RT. DFT calculations enlightened the function of the side-arm in the activation.

Scaffold diversity for enhanced activity of glycosylated inhibitors of fungal adhesion

Candida albicans is one of the most prevalent fungal pathogens involved in hospital acquired infections. It binds to glycans at the surface of epithelial cells and initiates infection. This process can be blocked by synthetic carbohydrates that mimic the structure of cell surface glycans. Herein we report the evaluation of a series of divalent glycosides featuring aromatic (benzene, squaramide) and bicyclic aliphatic (norbornene) scaffolds, with the latter being the first examples of their kind as small molecule anti-adhesion glycoconjugates. Galactosides 1 and 6, built on an aromatic core, were most efficient inhibitors of adhesion of C. albicans to buccal epithelial cells, displacing up to 36% and 48%, respectively, of yeast already attached to epithelial cells at 138 μM. Remarkably, cis-endo-norbornene 21 performed comparably to benzene-core derivatives. Conformational analysis reveals a preference for compounds 1 and 21 to adopt folded conformations. These results highlight the potential of norbornenes as a new class of aliphatic scaffolds for the synthesis of anti-adhesion compounds.

Gold(I)-Catalyzed Intramolecular Hydroamination and Hydroalkoxylation of Alkynes: Access to Original Heterospirocycles

We report here a simple and robust gold-catalyzed annulation reaction, giving N- and O-spirocycles in good to excellent yields. We have prepared a library of protected amines and tertiary alcohols that give, upon cyclization with alkynes, a representative set of heterospirocycles and illustrate reaction compatibility with diverse functional groups. A change in catalytic activity is possible by modifying the solvent, and two original tricyclic spirocycles were synthesized in a tandem reaction.

Sterically Demanding AgI and CuI N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes: Synthesis, Structures, Steric Parameters, and Catalytic Activity

The synthesis and full characterization of new air-stable AgI and CuI complexes bearing structurally bulky expanded-ring N-heterocyclic carbene (erNHC) ligands is presented. The condensation of protonated NHC salts with Ag2 O afforded a collection of AgI complexes, and their first use as ligand transfer reagents led to novel isostructural CuI or AuI complexes. In situ deprotonation of the NHC salts in the presence of a copper(I) source, provides a library of new CuI complexes. The solid-state structures feature large N-CNHC -N angles (118-128°) and almost identical angles between the aryl groups on the nitrogen atoms and the plane of the N-C-N unit of the carbene (i.e. torsion angles close to 0°). Among the steric parameters, the percent buried volume (%Vbur ) values span easily in the 50-57 % range, and that one of (9-Dipp)CuBr complex (%Vbur =57.5) overcomes to other known erNHC-metal complexes reported to date. Preliminary catalytic experiments in the copper-catalyzed coupling between N-tosylhydrazone and phenylacetylene, afforded 76-93 % product at the 0.5-2.5 mol % catalyst loading, proving the stability of CuI erNHC complexes at elevated temperatures (100 °C).

InCl3-catalyzed 5-exo-dig cyclization/1,6-conjugate addition of N-propargylamides with p-QMs to construct oxazole derivatives

An InCl₃-catalyzed tandem intramolecular 5-exo-dig cyclization/1,6-conjugate addition/aromatization of N-propargylamides with p-QMs to produce oxazoles tethering diarylmethane has been successfully developed.

Light-Induced Mechanistic Divergence in Gold(I) Catalysis: Revisiting the Reactivity of Diazonium Salts

In a systematic study of the Au-catalyzed reaction of o-alkynylphenols with aryldiazonium salts, we find that essentially the same reaction conditions lead to a change in mechanism when a light source is applied. If the reaction is carried out at room temperature using a AuI catalyst, the diazonium salt undergoes electrophilic deauration of a vinyl AuI intermediate and provides access to substituted azobenzofurans. If the reaction mixture is irradiated with blue LED light, C-C bond formation due to N2 -extrusion from the diazonium salt is realized selectively, using the same starting materials without the need for an additional photo(redox) catalyst under aerobic conditions. We report a series of experiments demonstrating that the same vinyl AuI intermediate is capable of producing the observed products under photolytic and thermal conditions. The finding that a vinyl AuI complex can directly, without the need for an additional photo(redox) catalyst, result in C-C bond formation under photolytic conditions is contrary to the proposed mechanistic pathways suggested in the literature till date and highlights that the role of oxidation state changes in photoredox catalysis involving Au is thus far only poorly understood and may hold surprises for the future. Computational results indicate that photochemical activation can occur directly from a donor-acceptor complex formed between the vinyl AuI intermediate and the diazonium salt.

Oxidative access via aqua regia to an electrophilic, mesoionic dicobaltoceniumyltriazolylidene gold(III) catalyst

A gold(III) complex with the hitherto most electron poor mesoionic carbene ligand is presented. Aqua regia was the oxidizing agent of choice for the synthesis of this unusual organometallic compound. The Au^III complex is redox-rich, and also acts as a catalyst for oxazole formation, delivering selectively a completely different isomer compared to its Au^I congener.

Bicyclic (amino)(borata)carbene derived from diazadiborinine and isonitrile

The reaction of 1,4,2,5-diazadiborinine (1) with two equivalents of an aryl isonitrile afforded a bicyclic product containing an indole unit (2) or ketenimine moiety (3), suggesting the generation of a B,N-carbene intermediate formed via a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction in the initial step. The employment of the tolyl(phenyl isonitrile)gold complex (PhNCAuTol) as the substrate allowed the bicyclic (amino)(borata)carbene gold complexes (4, 5) to be accessed.

Gold(I) Complexes Stabilized by Nine- and Ten-Membered N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

Nine- and ten-membered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been developed and for the first time their gold(I) complexes were synthesized. The protonated NHC pro-ligands 2 a-h were prepared by the reaction of readily available N,N'-diarylformamidines with bis-electrophilic building blocks, followed by anion exchange. In situ deprotonation of the tetrafluoroborates 2 a-h with tBuOK in the presence of AuCl(SMe2 ) provided fast access to NHC-gold(I) complexes 3-10. These new NHC-gold(I) complexes show very good catalytic activity in a cycloisomerization reaction (0.1 mol % catalyst loading, up to 100 % conversion) and their solid-state structures reveal high steric hindrance around the metal atom (%Vbur up to 53.0) which is caused by their expanded-ring architecture.
