Intramolecularly Coordinated [{2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3}SnII]+: A Strong σ Donor for PtII

Tetryliumylidene ions in synthesis and catalysis

Tetryliumylidene ions ([R-E:]+), recognised for their intriguing electronic properties, have attracted considerable interest. These positively charged species, with two vacant p-orbitals and a lone pair at the E(ii) centre (E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb), can be viewed as the combination of tetrylenes (R2E:) and tetrylium ions ([R3E]+), which makes them potent Lewis ambiphiles. Such electronic features highlight the potential of tetryliumylidenes for single-site small molecule activation and transition metal-free catalysis. The effective utilisation of the electrophilicity and nucleophilicity of tetryliumylidenes is expected to stem from appropriate ligand choice. For most of the isolated tetryliumylidenes, electron donor- and/or kinetic stabilisation is necessary. This minireview highlights the developments in tetryliumylidene syntheses and the progress of research towards their reactivity and applications in catalytic reactions.

Facile Access to Cationic Methylstannylenes and Silylenes Stabilized by E-Pt Bonding and their Methyl Group Transfer Reactivity

We describe a family of cationic methylstannylene and chloro- and azidosilylene organoplatinum(II) complexes supported by a neutral, binucleating ligand. Methylstannylenes MeSn:+ are stabilized by coordination to PtII and are formed by facile Me group transfer from dimethyl or monomethyl PtII complexes, in the latter case triggered by concomitant B-H, Si-H, and H2 bond activation that involves hydride transfer from Sn to Pt. A cationic chlorosilylene complex was obtained by formal HCl elimination and Cl- removal from HSiCl3 under ambient conditions. The computational studies show that stabilization of cationic methylstannylenes and cationic silylenes is achieved through weak coordination to a neutral N-donor ligand binding pocket. The analysis of the electronic potentials, as well as the Laplacian of electron density, also reveals the differences in the character of Pt-Si vs. Pt-Sn bonding. We demonstrate the importance of a ligand-supported binuclear Pt/tetrel core and weak coordination to facilitate access to tetrylium-ylidene Pt complexes, and a transmetalation approach to the synthesis of MeSnII :+ derivatives.

Coordination and Electrochemical Switching on Paddle-Wheel Complexes Containing an As-Ru or a Sb-Ru Axis

Inspired by the known complex [PhP(μ-PyO)₄Ru(CO)] (PyO = 2-pyridyloxy), the family of group 15 paddle-wheel complexes has been expanded to [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] (Pn = P, As, Sb; L = NCMe, CO). Solvent-dependent reversible switching between [PhAs(μ-PyO)₄Ru(NCMe)] and [PhAs(μ-PyO)₃Ru(κ²-PyO)] was detected. Electrochemical investigations of the [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] complexes showed reversible oxidation of the complexes with L = NCMe and back-formation of the complexes with L = NCMe upon oxidation of the complexes with L = CO in NCMe. In the series of [PhPn(μ-PyO)₄Ru(L)] complexes, the Pn→Ru bonding mode is shifted from L-type Pn to X-type upon going from Pn = P and As to Pn = Sb, resulting in a pronounced electron-rich Ru site in the latter case. The easily accessible complex [PhSb(μ-PyO)₄RuCl] exhibits reversible electrochemical and coordinative exchange with its reduced analogue [PhSb(μ-PyO)₄Ru(NCMe)] under retention of the paddle-wheel motif and Sb-Ru bond properties.

Compounds of the types Pn(pyS)3 (Pn = P, As, Bi; pyS: pyridine-2-thiolate) and Sb(pyS) x Ph3–x (x = 3–1); molecular structures and electronic situations of the Pn atoms

The compounds Pn(pyS)3 (Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi) were synthesized from the respective chloride (Pn = P, As, Sb) or nitrate (Bi), pyridine-2-thiol (pySH) and triethylamine (NEt3) as a supporting base in THF (P, Sb), CHCl3 (As) or methanol (Bi). Sb(pyS)3 was also obtained from the reaction of SbCl3 with LipyS (prepared in situ) in methanol. The compounds Sb(pyS)2Ph and Sb(pyS)Ph2 were prepared in a one-pot reaction starting from SbCl3 and SbPh3 (1:1 ratio). Upon Cl/pyS substitution, the resulting reaction mixture allows for a facile separation of the products in hot hexane. P(pyS)3 and As(pyS)3 crystallize isostructurally to the reported structure of Sb(pyS)3 with κ-S-bound pyS ligands. These crystal structures feature close Pn···Pn contacts which are most pronounced for the arsenic derivative. Bi(pyS)3 adopts a different molecular structure in the solid state, which features two chelating (κ 2-S,N-pyS) ligands and a κ-S-bound ligand. The presence of N→Bi interactions between the nitrogen atom of the κ-S-pyS ligand and the Bi atom of another molecule renders this structure a polymer chain along the crystallographic b axis with Bi⋅⋅⋅Bi van-der-Waals contacts. The structures of this set of Pn(pyS)3 compounds were also studied in solution using 1H NMR spectroscopy, revealing equivalent pyS ligands in discrete Pn(pyS)3 molecules. The molecular structure of Sb(pyS)Ph2 was optimized by quantum chemical methods, and a comparison with the structures reported for the other Sb/pyS/Ph combinations reveals Sb(pyS)2Ph to feature the strongest Sb···N interactions with the κ-S-pyS ligand. The results of 1H NMR spectroscopic investigations of the compounds Sb(pyS) x Ph3–x (x = 3–0) suggest the Ph protons in ortho position to be incorporated into intramolecular C–H···S contacts for x = 2 and 1. Natural localized molecular orbital (NLMO) calculations were employed in order to gain insights into the electronic situations of the Pn atoms and Pn–R bonds (R = S, C), especially for the effects caused by formal substitution of Pn in the compounds Pn(pyS)3 and the ligand patterns in the compounds Sb(pyS) x Ph3–x (x = 3–0). For the latter series of compounds, the electronic situation of the Sb atom was further studied by 121Sb Mössbauer spectroscopy, providing a correlation between the calculated electron density at Sb [ρ(0)] and the experimentally observed isomer shift δ. The missing link between group 15 and group 13 metal compounds of the type M(pyS)3, compound Al(pyS)3, was synthesized in this work. In the solid state (confirmed crystallographically), the mer isomer of this tris-chelate complex with distorted octahedral Al coordination sphere was found. This coordination mode was confirmed for the solution state (CDCl3) by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy at T = −40 °C.

Structure of a diorganotelluroxonium(IV) cation, {[2,6-(CH2NMe2)2C6H3Te(μ-O)]2}2+, with the tri-chlorido-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-platinum(II) anion

In the title salt, di-μ-oxido-bis-{2,6-bis-[(di-methyl-amino)-meth-yl]phenyl-κC 1}tellurium(-IV) bis[tri-chlorido-(dimethyl sulfoxide-κS)platinate(II)], (C24H38N4O2Te2)[PdCl3(C2H6OS)]2, which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P , each Te atom is in a distorted five-coordinated TeO2N2C square-pyramidal geometry (τ values of 0.026 and 0.001) with the C atoms of the phenyl rings occupying the apical positions. The phenyl rings in the [C24H38N4O2Te2]2+ cation are in a cis arrangement to enable this species to participate in Te⋯Cl cation-anion inter-actions. There are also C-H⋯O inter-actions involving the dimethyl sulfoxide ligands and numerous cation-anion and anion-anion C-H⋯Cl inter-actions, which link the ions into a complex three-dimensional array.

Reactivity of bis[{2,6-(dimethylamino)methyl}phenyl]telluride with Pd(ii) and Hg(ii): isolation of the first Pd(ii) complex of an organotellurenium cation as a ligand

Rational Syntheses and Serendipity: Complexes [LSnPtCl2 (SMe2 )]2 , [{LSnPtCl(SMe2 )}2 SnCl2 ], [(LSn)3 (PtCl2 )(PtClSnCl){LSn(Cl)OH}], and [O(SnCl)2 (SnL)2 ] with L=MeN(CH2 CMe2 O)2

Syntheses and molecular structures of the dimeric tin-platinum complex [LSnPtCl₂ (SMe₂ )]₂ (2), the tin-platinum clusters [{LSnPtCl(SMe₂ )}₂ SnCl₂ )] (3) and [(LSn)₃ (PtCl₂ )(PtClSnCl)(LSnOHCl)] (6) (L=MeN(CH₂ CMe₂ O^- )₂ ), and of the unprecedented tin(II) aminoalkoxide-tin oxide chloride complex [O(SnCl)₂ ⋅(SnL)₂ ] (5) are reported. The compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy (¹ H, ¹³ C, ¹¹⁹ Sn, ¹⁹⁵ Pt), ¹¹⁹ Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy (1-3, 6), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses (2⋅CH₂ Cl₂ , 3⋅2 C₄ H₈ O, 5, 6⋅3CH₂ Cl₂ ). The tin(II) aminoalkoxide [MeN(CH₂ CMe₂ O)₂ Sn]₂ (1) behaves like a neutral ligand, inserts into a Pt-Cl bond, or is involved in rearrangement reactions with the different behavior occurring even within one compound (3, 6). DFT calculations show that the tin-platinum compounds behave like electronic chameleons.

Tin(IV) Compounds with 2-C6F4PPh2 Substituents and Their Reactivity toward Palladium(0): Formation of Tin-Palladium Complexes via Oxidative Addition

The tin(IV) compounds Me_xSn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)_4-x (1, x = 1; 2, x = 2) and ClSn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₃ (3) were obtained from the reactions of 2-LiC₆F₄PPh₂ with MeSnCl₃ (3:1), Me₂SnCl₂ (2:1), or SnCl₄ (3:1), respectively. The reactions of 2-LiC₆F₄PPh₂ with SnCl₄ in different stoichiometric ratios (4:1-1:1) gave 3 as the main product. Compound Cl₂Sn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₂ (4) was formed in the transmetalation reaction of 3 and [AuCl(tht)] but could not be isolated. 1 and 2 react with palladium(0) sources {[Pd(PPh₃)₄] and [Pd(allyl)Cp]} by the oxidative addition of one of their Sn-C_Aryl bonds to palladium(0) with formation of the heterobimetallic complexes [MeSn(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₂Pd(κC-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)] (5) and [Me₂Sn(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)Pd(κ²-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)] (6) featuring Sn-Pd bonds. The reaction of 3 with palladium(0) proceeds via the oxidative addition of the Sn-Cl bond to palladium(0), thus furnishing the complex [Sn(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₃PdCl] (7) featuring a Sn-Pd bond and a pentacoordinate Pd atom. Transmetalation of Me_xSn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)_4-x (x = 1-3) with [Pd(allyl)Cl]₂ gave Me_xClSn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)_3-x and [Pd(allyl)(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)]₂. For x = 1, the compound MeClSn(2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₂ (generated in situ) reacted with another 1 equiv of [Pd(allyl)Cl]₂ by the oxidative addition of the Sn-Cl bond to palladium(0) and the reductive elimination of allyl chloride, thus leading to [MeSn(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₂PdCl] (8). The reductive elimination of allyl chloride was also observed in the reaction of 3 with [Pd(allyl)Cl]₂, giving [Sn(μ-2-C₆F₄PPh₂)₃PdCl] (7). All compounds have been characterized by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and selected compounds by ¹¹⁹Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. Computational analyses (natural localized molecular orbital calculations) have provided insight into the Sn-Pd bonding of 5-8.

Synthesis and Oxidation of a Paddlewheel-Shaped Rhodium/Antimony Complex Featuring Pyridine-2-Thiolate Ligands

The paddlewheel-shaped complex [Sb(μ-pyS)₄ Rh]₂ (1) (pyS^- = 2-S-C₅ H₄ N^- ) was synthesized from [Rh(pyS)(cod)]₂ (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene) and Sb(pyS)₃ . Upon oxidation with ONMe₃ , the complex [(μ-O)Sb(μ-pyS)₃ Rh(κ² -pyS)]₂ (2) is formed. Both 1 and 2 form dimers and feature short Rh-Sb bonds and bridging pyS ligands. ¹²¹ Sb Mössbauer spectro- scopy and computational studies were employed to elucidate the Rh-Sb bonding in 1 and 2. Both covalent (Rh-Sb, X-type Sb ligand) and dative (Rh→Sb, Z-type; Rh←Sb L-type Sb ligand) interactions have to be considered for the description of their bonding situations.

Bis-Sulfonyl O,C,O-Chelated Metallylenes (Ge, Sn) as Adjustable Ligands for Iron and Tungsten Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of an E2 CE2 bis-sulfonyl aryl pincer ligand and its efficiency for the stabilization of compounds containing low-valent Group 14 elements (Ge and Sn) are reported. Complexation reaction of these metallylenes with iron or tungsten complexes resulted in the modulation of the oxygen atoms of the sulfonyl groups implicated in the stabilization of the Group 14 elements, demonstrating the original adjustable character of the bis-sulfonyl O2 S-C-SO2 aryl pincer.

The tipping point of the inert pair effect: experimental and computational comparison of In(I) and Sn(II) bis(imino)pyridine complexes

The autoionization reaction of neutral bis(imino)pyridine and SnX2 led to three compounds [{ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh}2(NC5H3)]SnX(+)SnX3(-) (Ar = 2,6-(2,5-(t)Bu2C6H3), X = Cl, Br; Ar = 2,6-(2,6-Me2C6H3), X = Cl) which display, within the same species, cations and anions possessing Sn(ii) centers. Computational analysis compared the ligated Sn(ii) cations with bis(imino)pyridine In(i) complexes that showed unprecedented weak metal-ligand covalent interactions, consistent with the In(i) 5s(2) electrons remaining as an inert nonbonding pair. Analysis of the metal-ligand bonding indicates that the chloride ligand of the Sn(ii) complex induces promotion of the metal 5s(2) electron pair to a stereochemically active hybridized orbital, which, in turn, allows strong coordination of the bis(imino)pyridine to Sn.
