Enhancing Anisotropy Barriers of Dysprosium(III) Single-Ion Magnets

Tailoring single-ion magnet properties of coordination polymer C11H18DyN3O9 (Dy-CP) using the radial effective charge model (RECM) and superposition model (SPM)

We investigate Dy-based coordination polymer C11H18DyN3O9 (Dy-CP) exhibiting single-ion magnet (SIM) properties, e.g., quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM), magnetic anisotropy, magnetic relaxation, and effective energy barrier (Ueff). To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, crystal field parameters (CFPs) for Dy3+ ions were modelled using the radial effective charge model (RECM) and superposition model (SPM), and the computational packages SIMPRE and SPECTRE. The modelled CFPs enable the prediction of the energy levels and associated wave functions, which successfully explain the field-induced Dy-CP SIM properties. The so-calculated magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization match the experimental data reasonably well. The smaller energy separations of the first (Δ0-1 ∼ 31 cm-1) and the second (Δ0-2 = 74 cm-1) excited Kramers doublets suggest small Ueff = 65 cm-1 for Dy-CP. The magnetic moments of Dy3+ ions exhibit an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy in the ground state, but change orientation in the excited states due to mixing of states from different Kramers doublets. Low-symmetry CF components play a crucial role in connecting different |±MJ〉 states within the ground multiplet, resulting in QTM and magnetic relaxation to the ground state occurring via the excited states. The RECM and SPM calculated CFP sets are standardized employing the 3DD package to enable meaningful comparison and assessing their mutual equivalence. The results demonstrate the correlation between structural and electronic features of the molecule and site symmetry and distortion of the local coordination polyhedra with SIM properties, offering insights for rational design of new SIMs. The importance of considering low-symmetry aspects in CFP modelling for accurate predictions of magnetic properties is highlighted. This study provides deeper understanding of field-induced behaviour in rare-earth-based SIMs and approaches for rationalization of experimentally measured SIMs' properties.

Unravelling the role of spin-vibrational coupling in designing high-performance pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single ion magnets

At the cutting edge of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) lie lanthanide-based complexes, renowned for their potent magnetic anisotropy. SMMs containing one metal centre are defined as single-ion magnets (SIMs). The performance of SMMs is measured generally via the barrier height for magnetisation reversal (Ueff) and blocking temperature (TB), below which the magnetisation is fully frozen. To enhance the Ueff and TB values in lanthanide-based SMMs, the static crystal field splitting of mJ levels has been effectively adjusted through ligand design, leveraging the oblate/prolate ground state 4f electron density shape. However, the maximum fine-tuning achievable through ligand design, known as the axial limit, has already been reached in this class of compounds. This necessitates new design principles to enhance SMM characteristics to better suit end-user applications. Among other avenues that can be explored to improve SMM characteristics, a deeper understanding of spin-phonon coupling is critical to advancing TB values. However, there are only a handful of examples where this has been deciphered. In this work, using a combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF calculations, we have performed spin-phonon calculations on five classes of pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) SIMs exhibiting TB values in the range of 4.5 K to 36 K ([Dy(bbpen)Br] (1, H2bbpen = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine), [Dy(OCMe3)Br(THF)5][BPh4] (2) [Dy(OSiMe3)Br(THF)5] [BPh4] (3), [Dy(LN5)(Ph3SiO)2](BPh4)·CH2Cl2 (4) and [L2Dy(H2O)5][I]3·L2·H2O (5, L = tBuPO(NHiPr)2)). Unlike the method employed elsewhere for the calculation of spin-phonon coupling, in this work, we have employed a set of criteria and intuitively selected vibrational modes to perform the spin-phonon coupling analysis. The approach provided here not only reduces the computational cost significantly but also suggests chemical intuition to improve the performance of this class of compounds. Our calculations reveal that low-energy vibrational modes govern the magnetisation relaxation in these SIMs. A flexible first coordination sphere found on some of the complexes was found to be responsible for low-energy vibrations that flip the magnetisation, reducing the TB values drastically (complexes 2 and 3). On the other hand, a rigid first coordination sphere and a stiff ligand framework move the spin-vibrational coupling that causes the relaxation to lie beyond the secondary coordination sphere, resulting in an increase in TB values. Our calculations also reveal that not only the atoms in the first coordination sphere but also those in the secondary coordination sphere affect the performance of the SMMs. Learning from this exercise, we have undertaken several in silico models based on these vibrations to improve the TB values. Some of these predictions were correlated with literature precedents, offering confidence in the methodology employed. To this end, our comprehensive investigation, involving twenty-three molecules/models and five sets of geometries for pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single-ion magnets (SIMs), unveils a treasure trove of chemically sound design clues, poised to enhance the TB values in this fascinating molecular realm.

Perfluoroalkyl Chain Length Effect on Crystal Packing and [LnO8] Coordination Geometry in Lanthanide-Lithium β-Diketonates: Luminescence and Single-Ion Magnet Behavior

Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL₃)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO₈] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (U_eff for Dy complexes) is revealed.

Experimental and theoretical investigations on three DyIII4 single molecule magnets: structural and magneto-structural correlations

The work in this report describes the syntheses, crystal structures, dc/ac magnetic behaviour, and theoretical calculations (both ab initio CASSCF and DFT) of three defect dicubane/planar butterfly type tetradysprosium(III) compounds of compositions [Dy^III₄L₄(μ₃-OH)₂(carboxylate)₂(dmf)₂] (carboxylate = formate (1), acetate (2), propionate (3)), where H₂L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol. In the butterfly type structures, two Dy^III centres (Dy_b) occupy the body positions while two other (Dy_w) units occupy the wing positions. SHAPE analyses reveal that the coordination geometries of the Dy_b and Dy_w centres, both octacoordinated, are triangular dodecahedron (TDD) and square antiprism (SAPR), respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements give an indication of weak antiferromagnetic interactions and variable-field magnetization measurements reveal strong anisotropy in all the three compounds. The variable-temperature/frequency in-phase/out-of-phase AC susceptibility data reveal that all these three compounds are SMMs with two relaxation channels under zero dc field; slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation (FR) processes could be assigned to the SAPR (Dy_w) and TDD (Dy_b) metal centres, respectively. The simulated U_eff and τ₀ values are: 49.0 cm^-1 and 1.76 × 10^-7 s for 1, 30.3 cm^-1 and 1.51 × 10^-8 s for 2 and 23.4 cm^-1 and 9.64 × 10^-7 s for 3. Furthermore, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations reveal that the ground state of Dy^III centres are axial in nature with a dominating contribution from m_J = |±15/2>. The magnetization relaxation occurs via the first excited KD resulting in the large computed blocking barrier of Dy_w (SAPR) centres compared to that of the Dy_b (TDD) centres which corroborates the experimental measurements. The exchange parameters obtained from DFT calculations are generally in line with those obtained from the fitting of χ_MT vs. T in POLY_ANISO calculations. Interesting structural and magneto-structural correlations have been found, which are the major outcomes of this investigation.

Ab initio non-covalent crystal field theory for lanthanide complexes: a multiconfigurational non-orthogonal group function approach

We present a multiconfigurational ab initio methodology based on non-orthogonal fragments for the calculation of crystal field energy levels and magnetic properties of lanthanide complexes, implementing a systematic description of non-covalent contributions to metal-ligand bonding. The approach consists of two steps. In the first step, appropriate ab initio wave functions for the various ionic fragments (lanthanide ions and coordinating ligands) are optimized separately, accounting for the influence of the surrounding environment within various approximations. In the second and final step, the scalar relativistic (DKH2) electrostatic Hamiltonian of the whole molecule is represented on the basis of the optimized metal-ligand multiconfigurational non-orthogonal group functions (MC-NOGFs), and reduced to an effective (2J + 1)-dimensional non-orthogonal configuration interaction (CI) problem via Löwdin-partitioning. Within the proposed formalism, the projected non-orthogonal CI Hamiltonian can be expanded to any desired order of perturbation theory in the fragment-localised excitations out of the degenerate space, and its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions provide systematic approximations to the crystal field energies and wave functions. We present here a preliminary implementation of the proposed MC-NOGF method developed for first-order degenerate perturbation theory within our own ab initio code CERES, and compare its performance both with the simpler non-covalent orthogonal ab initio approach, Fragment Ab Initio Model Potential (FAIMP) approximation, and the full CAHF/CASCI-SO method, accounting for metal-ligand covalency in a mean-field manner. We found that the energies and magnetic properties of 44 complexes obtained via an iteratively optimized version of our MC-NOGF first-order non-covalent method compare remarkably well with those obtained using the full CAHF/CASCI-SO method including metal-ligand covalency, thus exposing the predominantly electrostatic character of the metal-ligand interactions, and are superior to those obtained using the FAIMP approach, which in its iteratively optimised variant was believed to date to be the best ab initio description of non-covalent metal-ligand interactions.

Insights into the Spin Dynamics of Mononuclear Cerium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

Four novel Ce^III mononuclear complexes of formulas [Ce(ntfa)₃(MeOH)₂] (1), [Ce(ntfa)₃(5,5'-Me₂bipy)] (2), [Ce(ntfa)₃(terpy)] (3), and [Ce(ntfa)₃(bipy)₂] (4), where ntfa = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionato, 5,5'-Me₂bipy = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, and bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, have been synthesized and structurally characterized with Ce^III displaying coordination numbers of 8, 8, 9, and 10, respectively. Magnetic measurements indicate that all the complexes show a field-induced single-ion magnet behavior under a small applied dc field. The magnetic analysis shows the relevance of the different spin relaxation mechanisms in the magnetic relaxation of the Ce^III compounds, with special emphasis on the local-mode process. Multiconfigurational calculations were also performed to get more information on the axiality of the compounds.

Modulating Two Pairs of Chiral DyIII Enantiomers by Distinct β-Diketone Ligands to Show Giant Differences in Single-Ion Magnet Performance and Nonlinear Optical Response

Using Dy(dbm)₃(H₂O) and Dy(btfa)₃(H₂O)₂ to react with enantiopure N-donors, (-)/(+)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine (L_R/L_S), respectively, two pairs of chiral Dy^III enantiomers, Dy(dbm)₃L_R/Dy(dbm)₃L_S (R-1-Dy/S-1-Dy) and Dy(btfa)₃L_R/Dy(btfa)₃L_S (R-2-Dy/S-2-Dy) were obtained, wherein one of the benzene rings of dbm^- (dibenzoylmethanate) in R-1-Dy/S-1-Dy is displaced by the -CF₃ group of btfa^- (4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate) in R-2-Dy/S-2-Dy. Interestingly, this substitution results not only in giant differences in their single-ion magnetic (SIM) performances but also in their completely different nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. R-1-Dy presents a large effective energy barrier (U_eff = 265.47 K) under zero applied field, being more than 4 × R-2-Dy (61.40 K). The discrepancy on their magnetic performances has been further elucidated by ab initio calculations. Meanwhile, R-1-Dy/S-1-Dy display the strongest third-harmonic generation responses (35/33 × α-SiO₂) among the known lanthanide NLO-active coordination compounds (CCs). On the contrary, R-2-Dy/S-2-Dy exhibit moderate second-harmonic generation responses (0.65/0.70 × KDP). These results not only give the first example of the CCs with both SMM/SIM behavior and a THG response but also provide an efficient strategy for achieving the function regulation and switch in multifunctional CCs.

The coexistence of long τQTM and high Ueff as a concise criterion for a good single-molecule magnet: a theoretical case study of square antiprism dysprosium single-ion magnets

A systematic theoretical study is performed on a group of 16 square antiprism dysprosium single-ion magnets. Based on ab initio calculations, the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) time, i.e., τ_QTM, and effective barrier of magnetic reversal, U_eff, are theoretically predicted. The theoretical τ_QTM is able to identify the ones with the longest QTM time with small numerical deviations. Similar results occur with respect to U_eff too. The systems possessing the best single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties here are just the ones having both the longest τ_QTM and the highest U_eff, from either experiment or theory. Thus, our results suggest the coexistence of long τ_QTM and high U_eff to be a criterion for high-performance SMMs. Although having its own limits, this criterion is easy to be applied in a large number of systems since both τ_QTM and U_eff could be predicted by theory with satisfactory efficiency and reliability. Therefore, this concise criterion could provide screened candidates for high-performance SMMs quickly and, hence, ease the burden of further exploration aiming for a higher degree of precision. This screening is important since the further exploration could easily demand tens or even hundreds of ab initio calculations for a single SMM. A semi-quantitative crystal field (CF) analysis is performed and shown here to be capable of indicating the general trends in a more chemically intuitive way. This analysis could help to identify the most important coordinating atoms for both diagonal and non-diagonal CF components. Thus, it could give some direct clues for improving the SMM properties: reducing the distance of the axial atom to the central ion, rotating the axial atom closer to the easy axis or increasing the amount of its negative charge. Correspondingly, opposite operations on the equatorial atom could give the same result.

A mononuclear nine-coordinated Dy(iii) complex exhibiting field-induced single-ion magnetism behaviour

A new mononuclear Dy(iii) complex, with the formula [Dy(Hcpt)₃]·2H₂O (1), has been successfully prepared via self-assembly between Dy(iii) ions and 2-cyano-N′-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)amido)acetyl (Hcpt) ligand. X-ray diffraction study shows that the Dy(iii) ion is nine-coordinated by three Hcpt ligands with a tridentate chelating mode, leading to an approximately monocapped square-antiprismatic (C_4v) geometry. Magnetic data analysis demonstrates that 1 performs field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with a relaxation barrier of 97.90 K, due to the quantum tunneling effect suppressed upon a static dc field of 2000 Oe. To deeply understand the magnetic behaviors, the relaxation mechanisms and magneto-structure relationship are rationally discussed using ab initio calculations as well.

Reaction of Dy(iii) ion with tridentate acylhydrazone ligand leads to a field-induced Dy(iii) SIM, of which the magneto-structural correlation is elucidated by the magnetic and theoretical studies.

Study of the most relevant spin-orbit coupling descriptions of magnetic excitations in a series of lanthanide complexes

We present a number of computationally cost-effective approaches to calculate magnetic excitations (i.e. crystal field energies and magnetic anisotropies in the lowest spin-orbit multiplet) in lanthanide complexes. In particular, we focus on the representation of the spin-orbit coupling term of the molecular Hamiltonian, which has been implemented within the quantum chemistry package CERES using various approximations to the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. The approximations include the (i) bare one-electron approximation, (ii) atomic mean field and molecular mean field approximations of the two-electron term, (iii) full representation of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. Within the framework of the CERES implementation, the spin-orbit Hamiltonian is always fully diagonalized together with the electron repulsion Hamiltonian (CASCI-SO) on the full basis of Slater determinants arising within the 4f ligand field space. For the first time, we make full use of the Cholesky decomposition of two-electron spin-orbit integrals to speed up the calculation of the two-electron spin-orbit operator. We perform an extensive comparison of the different approximations on a set of lanthanide complexes varying both the lanthanide ion and the ligands. Surprisingly, while our results confirm the need of at least a mean field approach to accurately describe the spin-orbit coupling interaction within the ground Russell-Saunders term, we find that the simple bare one-electron spin-orbit Hamiltonian performs reasonably well to describe the crystal field split energies and g tensors within the ground spin-orbit multiplet, which characterize all the magnetic excitations responsible for lanthanide-based single-molecule magnetism.

Slow relaxation of Dy(III) single-ion magnets dominated by the simultaneous binding of chelating ligands in low-symmetry ligand-fields

Electronic effect and geometry distortion of low-symmetry ligand-field on the anisotropy barrier (U_eff) of spin reversal have been compared in three Dy(III) single-ion magnets through the simultaneous binding of chelating ligands. The substitution of N,O-salicylaldoxime by N,N'-1,10-phenanthroline in the distorted triangular-dodecahedronal field sharply decreases the U_eff by 286 K due to an increase in non-preferred transverse anisotropy, while the geometry distortion with CShM = 1.569 went down to 1.376 only lowering the U_eff by 12 K. The co-coordination strategy of heterodonor ligands highlights the importance of ligand-surroundings on the relaxation dynamics.

Regulating the magnetic properties of seven-coordinated Dy(III) single-ion magnets through the effect of positional isomers on axial crystal-field

Six Dy(III) single-ion magnets (SIMs) [Dy(n-OMe-bbpen)X] were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction with three positional isomers (ortho, meta, and para) of ligands n-OMe-H₂bbpen and dysprosium halides DyX₃, (n-OMe-H₂bbpen = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-n-methoxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine; n = 3, X = Cl, 1; n = 3, X = Br, 2; n = 4, X = Cl, 3; n = 4, X = Br, 4; n = 5, X = Cl, 5; n = 5, X = Br, 6). Dynamic magnetic measurements revealed that the six complexes possess notably different effective barriers of magnetic reversal: 872.0 K (1), 1210.1 K (2), 137.9 K (3), 602.6 K (4), 907.0 K (5) and 1216.7 K (6). 6 showed the best performance as SIMs among the six Dy(III) complexes. Moreover, the magnetic hysteresis loops of 6 remained open at 21 K. The crystal structures indicate the switching of local symmetry around Dy(III) ion, aroused by the variation in intermolecular interactions and steric effects. This switch is primarily correlated with the distinction of magnetic properties. In addition, ab initio calculations confirmed that the different electrostatic potential around Dy(III) ion stemming from the electronic effect of the OMe-substituted group is another factor leading to the distinction in magnetic properties. This work warns us that when designing ligands for Dy-SIMs, the effect of positional isomerism on magnetic performance must be considered, which is one of the factors that can easily be overlooked.

Dipyridyl-Decorated Nitronyl Nitroxide-DyIII Single-Molecule Magnet with a Record Energy Barrier of 146 K

A nitronyl nitroxide biradical with a capping N-donor group was discovered to improve single-molecule-magnet behavior of the Dy-biradical cluster, generating a magnetic reversal barrier of 146 K. As far as we know, the effective energy barrier of the Dy compound is largest in the nitronyl nitroxide 4f system by far.

Correlating axial and equatorial ligand field effects to the single-molecule magnet performances of a family of dysprosium bis-methanediide complexes

Treatment of the new methanediide-methanide complex [Dy(SCS)(SCSH)(THF)] (1Dy, SCS = {C(PPh2S)2}2-) with alkali metal alkyls and auxillary ethers produces the bis-methanediide complexes [Dy(SCS)2][Dy(SCS)2(K(DME)2)2] (2Dy), [Dy(SCS)2][Na(DME)3] (3Dy) and [Dy(SCS)2][K(2,2,2-cryptand)] (4Dy). For further comparisons, the bis-methanediide complex [Dy(NCN)2][K(DB18C6)(THF)(toluene)] (5Dy, NCN = {C(PPh2NSiMe3)2}2-, DB18C6 = dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether) was prepared. Magnetic susceptibility experiments reveal slow relaxation of the magnetisation for 2Dy-5Dy, with open magnetic hysteresis up to 14, 12, 15, and 12 K, respectively (∼14 Oe s-1). Fitting the alternating current magnetic susceptibility data for 2Dy-5Dy gives energy barriers to magnetic relaxation (U eff) of 1069(129)/1160(21), 1015(32), 1109(70), and 757(39) K, respectively, thus 2Dy-4Dy join a privileged group of SMMs with U eff values of ∼1000 K and greater with magnetic hysteresis at temperatures >10 K. These structurally similar Dy-components permit systematic correlation of the effects of axial and equatorial ligand fields on single-molecule magnet performance. For 2Dy-4Dy, the Dy-components can be grouped into 2Dy-cation/4Dy and 2Dy-anion/3Dy, where the former have almost linear C[double bond, length as m-dash]Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C units with short average Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C distances, and the latter have more bent C[double bond, length as m-dash]Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C units with longer average Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C bonds. Both U eff and hysteresis temperature are superior for the former pair compared to the latter pair as predicted, supporting the hypothesis that a more linear axial ligand field with shorter M-L distances produces enhanced SMM properties. Comparison with 5Dy demonstrates unusually clear-cut examples of: (i) weakening the equatorial ligand field results in enhancement of the SMM performance of a monometallic system; (ii) a positive correlation between U eff barrier and axial linearity in structurally comparable systems.

The two mononuclear complexes of the formula [Dy(tta)3(L)] (1) and [Dy(hfac)3(L)] (2) (where tta- = 2-thenoytrifluoroacetylacetonate and hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O or Dy(hfac)3·2H2O units with the 1,10-phenantroline-5,6-dione ligand (L). Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals, and they revealed a supramolecular assembly of tetramers through σ-π interactions. Both complexes displayed a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior without an external applied magnetic field. Magnetic relaxation happened through Orbach, Raman and Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM). Wavefunction theory calculations were realized to rationalize the magnetic properties.

Tuning slow magnetic relaxation behaviour in a {Dy2}-based one-dimensional chain via crystal field perturbation

Two novel {Dy₂}-based one dimensional chain compounds {[Dy₂(H₃L)₄(OAc)₆]·2MeOH}_n (1) and {[Dy₂(H₃L)₄(OAc)₄(NCS)₂]·2MeOH}_n (2) (H₃L = 1,3-bis(2-hydroxynaphthalenemethyleneamino)-propan-2-ol) have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. Crystal structure analyses indicate that 1 and 2 feature similar 1D chain structures bearing dinuclear secondary building units. The difference between these two structures is that one chelated acetate ligand of Dy(iii) ion in 1 is replaced by one monodentate coordinated NCS⁻ ion in 2, leading to their different coordination numbers and geometry configurations to Dy(iii) ion. Magnetic properties indicate that 1 and 2 display slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier of 16.44(2) K in 1 and 8.02(2) K in 2, respectively, which is maybe attributed to the subtle crystal field perturbation of Dy(iii) ions.

Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes Showing Single-Molecule Magnet Behaviour and Optical Properties

Three dinuclear lanthanide(iii) complexes with an acetate bridge, which are synthesised by a Salen-type Schiff base and β-diketonate ligands, i.e. [Ln2L2(TTA)4(OAc)2]·CH2Cl2 (Ln=Eu (1), Gd (2), Dy (3); TTA=thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, H2L=N,N′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine), are investigated. We obtained the structures of complexes 1–3 by X-ray crystallography. Notably, in terms of the structure of these complexes, what is intriguing is that the acetate groups link two Lniii ions, whereas the cadmium ions do not coordinate. Lanthanide-based luminescence is exhibited by complex 1, which exists in both the solid state and a methanol solution. Through magnetic analysis, it is found that a field-induced single-molecule magnet behaviour is exhibited by complex 3, and the energy barrier is shown to be Ueff=45.97K.

Magnetic Behavior of Luminescent Dinuclear Dysprosium and Terbium Complexes Derived from Phenoxyacetic Acid and 2,2’-Bipyridine

Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Dy2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (1) and [Tb2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (2) (HL1 = phenoxyacetic acid and L2 = 2,2’-bipyridine) were synthesized and the crystal structures were determined. In both complexes, the lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated and have a muffin geometry. Detailed magnetic study reveals the presence of field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior for complex 1, whereas complex 2 is non-SMM in nature. Further magnetic study with 1’, yttrium doped magnetically diluted sample of 1, disclosed the presence of Orbach and Raman relaxation processes with effective energy barrier, ∆E = 16.26 cm−1 and relaxation time, τo = 2.42 × 10−8 s. Luminescence spectra for complexes 1 and 2 in acetonitrile were studied which show characteristic emission peaks for DyIII and TbIII ions, respectively.

Towards comparative investigation of Er- and Yb-based SMMs: the effect of the coordination environment configuration on the magnetic relaxation in the series of heteroleptic thiocyanate complexes

We prepared and studied two similar series of Er and Yb thiocyanates, involving [Ln(H₂O)₅(NCS)₃]·H₂O (1Er, 1Yb) as well as the molecular and ionic complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenantroline (phen), [Ln(H₂O)(bpy)₂(NCS)₃]·0.5(bpy)·H₂O (2Er, 2Yb), [Ln(H₂O)(phen)₂(NCS)₃]·phen·0.5H₂O (3Er, 3Yb), [Hbpy][Ln(bpy)₂(NCS)₄]·H₂O (4Er, 4Yb) and [Hphen][Ln(phen)₂(NCS)₄] (5Er, 5Yb). All the complexes were found to exhibit the properties of field-induced single-molecule magnets. For 1Yb, the effective value of the energy barrier for magnetization reversal, Δ_eff/k_B, equals to 50 K, which is among the highest ones currently known for molecular SMMs based on Yb³⁺. The obtained data are discussed involving essential structural features of the complexes, namely the configuration of the Ln environment, i.e. its composition and geometry as well as mutual distribution of different donating centers. To the best of our knowledge, this work also involves experimental investigation of the largest and thus sufficiently representative series of similar mononuclear SMMs based on Er and Yb within one study.

Dramatic impact of auxiliary ligands on the two-step magnetic relaxation process in Dy4(iii) single-molecule magnets

To better understand the factors determining the multi-step relaxation processes in polynuclear lanthanide single molecule magnets (SMMs), two Dy(iii)4 SMMs showing two-step relaxation processes were elaborately designed and investigated for their structure-dependent magnetic properties. Through targetedly fine-tuning the auxiliary ligand (from the anion of 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione to 2-acetylcyclopentanone) on specific Dy(iii) sites while retaining the same type of coordination atoms, one of the two relaxation processes shifted to higher temperature with an increase of energy barrier, which permits the unambiguous assignment of the relaxation processes to specific metal sites. Therefore, the present {Dy4} systems provide a good example to probe the factors determining the relaxation dynamics, and point to a simple way to optimize the magnetic performance of polynuclear dysprosium SMMs.

Mononuclear lanthanide complexes assembled from a tridentate NNO donor ligand: design of a DyIII single-ion magnet

The reaction of a tridentate NNO donor ligand, 4-nitro-2-((2-(pyridine-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol (HL) with lanthanide(iii) nitrates in the presence of triethylamine afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(NO3)(L)2(HOCH3)] (Ln = Gd; (1) Tb; (2), Dy; (3), and Ho (4). The mononuclear complexes were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies which revealed a spherical tricapped trigonal prism geometry with a pseudo D3h symmetry around the LnIII centre. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies have been performed on these complexes. Field-induced single-ion magnet behaviour was observed in the DyIII analogue with an effective energy barrier and an pre-exponential factor of Δ/kB = 68(2) K and τ0 = 1.8 × 10-7 s, respectively.

A Dy2 dimer derived from a two-dimensional network with a high Ueff value

A new Dy2-dimer-based two-dimensional network Dy(L)(HL)(phen) (1-Dy) has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. 1-Dy displays an obvious single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with a high Ueff value of approximately 160 K under a zero dc field.

Tetranuclear dysprosium single-molecule magnets: tunable magnetic interactions and magnetization dynamics through modifying coordination number

The study of mononuclear lanthanide-based systems, where the observed Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) properties originate from the local magnetic anisotropy of the single lanthanide ion, has been extensively investigated in the literature. The case for polynuclear lanthanide SMMs becomes more challenging both experimentally and theoretically due to the complexity of such architectures involving interactions between the magnetic centers. Much interest was devoted to the study of the structural effect on the magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics. However, the understanding of the structural influence on those two factors remains a difficult task. To address this issue, a system containing two structurally related tetranuclear Dy(iii) SMMs, namely [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)4(NO3)2]·2(DMF)·(H2O) (1) and [Dy4(L)4(OH)2(DMF)2(NO3)2] (2) (H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenol), is introduced and investigated. Through modifying the ligands on the changeable coordination sites, the intramolecular magnetic interactions and relaxation dynamics in these two Dy(iii)4 SMMs can be tuned. Both complexes exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetization with a relaxation barrier of 114 K for complex 2 while a blocking temperature below 2 K is observed for complex 1. Ab initio calculations reveal that changes in coordination numbers and geometries on the Dy(iii) sites can significantly affect the magnetic interactions as well as single-ion anisotropy. The combination of experimental work and ab initio calculations offers insight into the relationship between structures and magnetic properties and sheds light on the rational design of future polynuclear lanthanide SMMs with enhanced magnetic properties.
