Tuning the Solid-State Luminescence of BODIPY Derivatives with Bulky Arylsilyl Groups: Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties

Facile Synthesis of Asymmetric aza-Boron Dipyrromethene Analogues Bearing Quinoxaline Moiety

An asymmetric aza-BODIPY analogue bearing quinoxaline moiety was synthesized via a titanium tetrachloride-mediated Schiff-base-forming reaction of 6,7-dimethyl-1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-dione and benzo[d]thiazol-2-amine. This novel aza-BODIPY analogue forms a complementary hydrogen-bonded dimer due to the quinoxaline moiety in the crystal structure. It also shows intense absorption and fluorescence, with fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. The electrochemical measurements and the DFT calculations revealed the presence of the low-lying HOMO, which benefits their potential applications as an electron-transporting material.

2-{9-(10-Bromoanthracenyl)}-1,3-dihydro-1H-[d]-1,3,2-benzodiazaborole

In this paper, a synthesis and characterization of a novel three coordinate 2-{9-(10-Bromoanthracenyl)}-1,3-dihydro-1H-[d]-1,3,2-benzodiazaborole from a cyclo-condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamine and 10-bromoanthracene-9-boronic acid is described. The desired product was obtained in 0.343 g (92% yields) with its structure characterized by 1H, 11B, 13C NMR, HRMS and FT-IR.

Aryl/Heteroaryl Substituted Boron-Difluoride Complexes Bearing 2-(Isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole Ligands Exhibiting High Luminescence Efficiency with a Large Stokes Shift

A series of 2-(isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole-boron complexes possessing (hetero)aryl substituents on the pyrrole and/or isoquinoline moiety were prepared. These compounds exhibited the fluorescence emission character in both solution and solid state. In most cases, the large Stokes shift and high fluorescence quantum yield in the solution were compatible. Furthermore, the structural diversity allowed the precise tuning of emitting colors from light blue to red with strong emission intensity. The present paper describes their comprehensive optical characteristics dependent on the type and position of the substituted aryl groups by the experimental and computational studies.

Interplay between Polaritonic and Molecular Trap States

Strong exciton-photon coupling exhibits the possibility to modify the photophysical properties of organic molecules. This is due to the introduction of hybrid light-matter states, called polaritons, which have unique physical and optical properties. Those strongly coupled systems provide altered excited-state dynamics in comparison to the bare molecule case. In this study, we investigate the interplay between polaritonic and molecular trap states, such as excimers. The molecules used in this study show either prompt or delayed emission from trap states. For both cases, a clear dependency on the exciton-photon energy tuning was observed. Polaritonic emission gradually increased with a concurrent removal of aggregation-induced emission when the systems were tuned toward lower energies. For prompt emission, it is not clear whether the experimental results are best explained by a predominant relaxation toward the lower polariton after excitation or by a direct excimer to polariton transition. However, for the delayed emission case, trap states are formed on the initially formed triplet manifold, making it evident that an excimer-to-polariton transition has occurred. These results unveil the possibility to control the trap state population by creating a strongly coupled system, which may form a mitigation strategy to counteract detrimental trap states in photonic applications.

Tailoring the Solid-State Fluorescence of BODIPY by Supramolecular Assembly with Polyoxometalates

A cationic boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivative (1⁺) has been successfully combined with two polyoxometalates (POMs), the Lindqvist-type [W₆O₁₉]^2- and the β-[Mo₈O₂₆]^4- units, into three new supramolecular fluorescent materials (1)₂[W₆O₁₉]·2CH₃CN, (1)₂[W₆O₁₉], and (1)₄[Mo₈O₂₆]·DMF·H₂O. The resulting hybrid compounds have been fully characterized by a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and photoluminescence analyses. This self-assembly approach prevents any π-π stacking interactions not only between the BODIPY units, responsible for aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effects, but also between the BODIPY and the POMs, avoiding intermolecular charge-transfer effects. Noticeably, the POM units do not only act as bulky spacers, but their negative charge density drives the molecular arrangement of the 1⁺ luminophore, strongly modifying its fluorescence in the solid state. As a consequence, the 1⁺ cations are organized into dimers in (1)₂[W₆O₁₉]·2CH₃CN and (1)₂[W₆O₁₉], which are weakly emissive at room temperature, and in a more compact layered assembly in (1)₄[Mo₈O₂₆]·DMF·H₂O, which exhibits a red-shifted and intense emission upon similar photoexcitation.

Modular Synthesis of Organoboron Helically Chiral Compounds: Cutouts from Extended Helices

Two types of helically chiral compounds bearing one and two boron atoms were synthesized by a modular approach. Formation of the helical scaffolds was executed by the introduction of boron to flexible biaryl and triaryl derived from small achiral building blocks. All-ortho-fused azabora[7]helicenes feature exceptional configurational stability, blue or green fluorescence with quantum yields (Φfl ) of 18-24 % in solution, green or yellow solid-state emission (Φfl up to 23 %), and strong chiroptical response with large dissymmetry factors of up to 1.12×10-2 . Azabora[9]helicenes consisting of angularly and linearly fused rings are blue emitters exhibiting Φfl of up to 47 % in CH2 Cl2 and 25 % in the solid state. As revealed by the DFT calculations, their P-M interconversion pathway is more complex than that of H1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis shows clear differences in the packing arrangement of methyl and phenyl derivatives. These molecules are proposed as primary structures of extended helices.

Effects of Substituents on Photophysical and CO-Photoreleasing Properties of 2,6-Substituted meso-Carboxy BODIPY Derivatives

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an endogenously produced signaling molecule involved in the control of a vast array of physiological processes. One of the strategies to administer therapeutic amounts of CO is the precise spatial and temporal control over its release from photoactivatable CO-releasing molecules (photoCORMs). Here we present the synthesis and photophysical and photochemical properties of a small library of meso-carboxy BODIPY derivatives bearing different substituents at positions 2 and 6. We show that the nature of substituents has a major impact on both their photophysics and the efficiency of CO photorelease. CO was found to be efficiently released from π-extended 2,6-arylethynyl BODIPY derivatives possessing absorption spectra shifted to a more biologically desirable wavelength range. Selected photoCORMs were subjected to in vitro experiments that did not reveal any serious toxic effects, suggesting their potential for further biological research.

BODIPY-Based Molecules, a Platform for Photonic and Solar Cells

The 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-based molecules have emerged as interesting material for optoelectronic applications. The facile structural modification of BODIPY core provides an opportunity to fine-tune its photophysical and optoelectronic properties thanks to the presence of eight reactive sites which allows for the developing of a large number of functionalized derivatives for various applications. This review will focus on BODIPY application as solid-state active material in solar cells and in photonic devices. It has been divided into two sections dedicated to the two different applications. This review provides a concise and precise description of the experimental results, their interpretation as well as the conclusions that can be drawn. The main current research outcomes are summarized to guide the readers towards the full exploitation of the use of this material in optoelectronic applications.

Tetrahedral Silicon-Centered Dibenzoylmethanatoboron Difluorides: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Photophysical Behavior in Solution and the Solid State

Four tetrahedral silicon-centered derivatives of dibenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride (DBMBF₂ ) were synthesized and characterized. Their structural and optical features both in solution and the solid state were investigated by using X-ray crystallography, steady-state and time-dependent spectroscopy, and DFT-based calculations. In dilute solutions, the molar absorption coefficient increases from 40500 to 175200 M^-1  cm^-1 as the number of DBMBF₂ fragments in a molecule increases from one to four, while, in contrast, the nonradiative rate constant of fluorescence decay decreases from 0.49 to 0.34. In the solid state, absorption and emission spectra depend on the degree of crystallinity and microcrystal size. The tris-DBMBF₂ derivative forms fully overlapping dimeric structures that exhibit excimer-like fluorescence, which is accurately predicted by the quantum-chemical calculations. The mono-DBMBF₂ derivative exhibits fully reverse mechanofluorochromic behavior.

Strain-Sensitive Fluorescence from Two-Dimensional Organic Crystal

Strain-sensitive fluorescence materials have great potential in sensing applications owing to their low cost, intuitive signal, and user friendliness. Organic crystals are one of the most developed fluorescence materials. However, modulation of the fluorescence by strain is still a challenge. Here, for the first time, we investigate the strain-sensitive fluorescence of the two-dimensional (2D) organic crystal. Without interlayer interactions, the molecular arrangement in a 2D crystal can be easily tuned, which results in photoluminescence transformation between monomer emission and excimer emission. The 2D organic crystal has higher sensitivity under strain, compared with bulk organic crystals, showing great potential in practical applications such as tactile monitors, chameleon bionic skin, and visible leakage alarms.

New and highly emissive 2,6-diacetynyl and 2,6-bis-(phenylacetynyl) functionalized pentamethyldifluoroboron-dipyrromethane (BODIPY) derivatives (FBDP1–2) with perfluorinated pendant groups at the boron center have been synthesized successfully by the combination of two strategies, extending the π-conjugation and functionalization at the boron centre.

A near-infrared benzoquinone-coupled BODIPY: Synthesis, spectroscopic and electrochemical properties

A near-infrared absorbing boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophore coupled with two benzoquinone moieties at its 3,5-positions, 3, was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation of 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-(4[Formula: see text]-benzonitrile) BODIPY 1 with 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde to afford 1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-(4[Formula: see text]-hydroxy-3[Formula: see text],5[Formula: see text]-di-tert-butyl styryl)-8-(4[Formula: see text]-benzonitrile) BODIPY 2, followed by oxidization with Ag2O in good yield (91%). The UV-vis-NIR absorption spectrum of 3 exhibits two major bands at 795 and 895 nm in the near-IR region, while 2shows maximum absorbance at 661 nm and strong fluorescence at 692 nm ([Formula: see text] 0.59). The cyclic voltammetry of 3 consists of two pairs of reversible one-electron reductions at -0.61 V and -0.88 V and two pairs of one-electron oxidation waves at 0.26 V and 0.54 V. Compared with the redox potentials of 2([Formula: see text] V and [Formula: see text] 0.25 V), the first reduction of 3 is anodically shifted for 710 mV, whereas the first oxidation potential is close. Theoretical calculation reveals that conjugation with the benzoquinone moieties on the BODIPY chromophore significantly lowers the LUMO energy level and the HOMO–LUMO energy gap, resulting in a dramatic bathochromic shift of the S0–S1 transition of 3 compared with that of 2. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 3 reveals that the whole molecule adopts a V-type twisted conformation along the delocalized [Formula: see text]-conjugated pathway.

Solid-state emissive O-BODIPY dyes with bimodal emissions across red and near infrared region

Fluorescent compounds with solid-state emission are expected to have broad applications in the development of optoelectronic devices. In this study, we develop O-BODIPY based fluorescent dyes which exhibit strong bimodal solid-state emissions across red and NIR regions. After one pot synthesis, samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption, and fluorescence spectra. All the experimental data reveal the multiple excitation and efficient emission features in the aggregation states. Furthermore, the two produced probes can be successfully applied for tracking lysosomes in HeLa cells with low cytotoxicity.

Effect of substituents on Stokes shift of BODIPY and its application in designing bioimaging probes

BODIPY-based probes have excellent fluorescence properties. However, small Stokes shifts approximately 5-15 nm greatly affect their detection sensitivity. In this study, we compared the Stokes shifts of reported BODIPY-based probes with various of substituents, and found that the phenyl groups on the specific position of BODIPY core could expand the Stokes shift of BODIPY-based probes, and methoxy groups on these phenyl substituents could enhance such effects. Then, by quantum chemical calculations, we found that the number of methoxy groups might also have obvious effect on the Stokes shift of BODIPY. Taking nitric oxide (NO) as analyte, 4,4-difluoro-8-(3,4-diaminophenyl)-3,5-bis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indancene (DMOPB) with diaminophenyl substituents has been designed and synthesized. Compared with monomethoxy-phenyl substituted BODIPY-based probes (MOPBs) in our previous work, Stokes shift of DMOPB was expanded by 10 nm when using dimethoxyphenyl instead of monomethoxyphenyl, which is basically consistent with the quantum chemistry calculation of 11 nm. DMOPB can react with NO in only 2 min to form the triazole DMOPB-T with a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.32. An excellent linear relationship was observed in the range of NO concentration from 0.5 μM to 4 μM and the detection limit was 1 nM. The experimental results indicate that DMOPB with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, low toxicity and dark background can be a great candidate for imaging NO in cells and tissues. Considering the lack of practical way to increase Stokes shift of small-molecule fluorescent probes based on specific fluorophore, the proposed strategy has great potential for the designing of probes with large Stokes shift.

Domino-like multi-emissions across red and near infrared from solid-state 2-/2,6-aryl substituted BODIPY dyes

Considerable achievements on multiple emission capabilities and tunable wavelengths have been obtained in inorganic luminescent materials. However, the development of organic counterparts remains a grand challenge. Herein we report a series of 2-/2,6-aryl substituted boron-dipyrromethene dyes with wide-range and multi-fluorescence emissions across red and near infrared in their aggregation states. Experimental data of X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption, and room temperature fluorescence spectra have proved the multiple excitation and easy-adjustable emission features in aggregated boron-dipyrromethene dyes. Temperature-dependent and time-resolved fluorescence studies have indicated a successive energy transfer from high to step-wisely lower-located energy levels that correspond to different excitation states of aggregates. Consistent quantum chemical calculation results have proposed possible aggregation modes of boron-dipyrromethene dyes to further support the above-described scenario. Thus, this study greatly enriches the fundamental recognition of conventional boron-dipyrromethene dyes by illustrating the relationships between multiple emission behaviors and the aggregation states of boron-dipyrromethene molecules.

The class of BODIPY dyes has high solubility and high quantum yields and is widely used in imaging applications. Here Tian et al. synthesize new dye molecules and demonstrate extended emission properties and application scope controllable both by the excitation wavelength and aggregation states.

One-Pot Synthesis of a Mono-O,B,N-strapped BODIPY Derivative Displaying Bright Fluorescence in the Solid State

Tin(IV) catalysis allows isolation of a boron dipyrromethene derivative bearing a solitary strap around the boron center. The conditions favor internal cyclization without contamination by side products and provide high yields of product in good purity. A phenolate-based strap imposes chirality and causes geometrical distortion of the dipyrrin. Relatively strong fluorescence is observed for single crystals, evaporated films, and adsorbed layers. Single-crystal absorption and emission spectra resemble those observed from solution with contributions from a dimer.

BODIPY Dye, the Most Versatile Fluorophore Ever?

BODIPY laser dyes constitute a fascinating topic of research in modern photochemistry due to the large variety of options its chromophore offers, which is ready available for a multitude of synthetic routes. Indeed, in the literature one can find a huge battery of compounds based on the indacene core. The possibility of modulating the spectroscopic properties or inducing new photophysical processes by the substitution pattern of the BODIPY dyes has boosted the number of scientific and technological applications for these fluorophores. Along the following lines, I will overview the main results achieved in our laboratory with BODIPYs oriented to optoelectronic as well to biophotonic applications, stressing the more relevant photophysical issues to be considered in the design of a tailor-made BODIPY for a certain application and pointing out some of the remaining challenges.

Synthesis and Properties of Benzothieno[b]-Fused BODIPY Dyes

Two benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY, in which one parent BODIPY core is fused with one and two benzothieno rings, respectively, were synthesized from BODIPYs substituted with 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenyl at the β-position. The first H2SO4-induced cyclization and deborylation afforded benzothieno[b]-fused dipyrrin derivatives, which can easily complex with BF3·OEt2 to form the desired benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs. It was revealed that the fusion of the benzothieno ring is more effective at extending conjugation than simple attachment of the 2-(methylthio)phenyl substituent, which presumably results from conformational restriction. Compared with the corresponding unstrained SPh-BODIPY and BSPh-BODIPY, which contain one and two 2-(methylthio)phenyl groups at the β-position, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY display red shifted absorption, increased absorptivity, and fluorescence efficiency. Furthermore, the ring fusion is also helpful to increase stability of the formed cation in BBT-BODIPY. Thus, BBT-BODIPY exhibits very intriguing properties, such as intense absorption and emission in the red region, very sharp emission spectra, and reversible oxidation and reduction potentials.

Tailoring the Solid-State Fluorescence Emission of BODIPY Dyes by meso Substitution

4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives bearing varied substituents at the meso position (i.e., CF3 , CH3 , COOR, CHO, CN, Cl, iPr) were synthesized to elucidate the structure-property relationships that give rise to emissive J-aggregates. Several new BODIPY derivatives can be added to the previously reported 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-trifluoromethyl derivative to the list of those forming J-aggregates, in addition to other dyes that are emissive in the solid state without forming J-aggregates.
