New Perspectives on Polyoxometalate Catalysts: Alcohol Oxidation with Zn/Sb-Polyoxotungstates

Fabrication of a Multi-Functional Separator Incorporating Crown ether- Polyoxometalate Supramolecular Compound for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Recently, research on polyoxometalates (POMs) has gained significant momentum. Owing to their properties as electronic sponges, POMs catalyst harbor substantial potential in lithium-sulfur battery research. However, POMs undergo a transformation into reduced heteropoly blue (HPB) during electrochemical reactions, which then dissolve into the electrolyte, resulting in catalyst loss. In this research, we amalgamated 18-crown-6 (CR6) with K3PW12O40, (KPW), synthesized a novel POM-based supramolecular compound, and integrated it with graphene oxide (GO) to fabricate a multi-functional composite polypropylene (PP) separator KPW-CR6/GO/PP. The crown ether array was employed to immobilize POM and construct ion transport channels, thereby enhancing the Li+ migration rate and capturing polysulfides. Subsequently, leveraging the stable structure and redox properties of POM, the polysulfide is catalyzed to transform and inhibit the shuttle effect, thereby protecting the Li anode. The lithium-sulfur batteries with the Crown ether-POM supramolecular compound separators, exhibit enhanced capacity and stability (1073.3 mAh g-1 at 1.0 C, and 81.5 % retention rate after 250 cycles). The battery (S loading: 3.2 mg cm-2) presents an initial specific discharge capacity of 543.4 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C, with 89.8 % of the capacity retained after 160 cycles. This underlines the practical application potential of Crown ether-POM supramolecular materials in Li-S batteries.

Improved Catalytic Performance toward Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols Originated from New Open-Framework Copper Molybdovanadate with a Unique V/Mo Ratio

A new organic-inorganic hybrid open-framework molybdovanadate with mixed-valences of vanadium (V4+ /V5+ =4/3) and molybdenum (Mo5+ /Mo6+ =8/2) cations has been synthesized. The complex possesses the unique V/Mo ratio (7/10), fascinating 8-C topological network and 1D 4-MR channels (7.793 Å×6.699 Å). Importantly, its catalytic activities for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (oxidant: H2 O2 , 30 wt %) have been well evaluated. The results indicated that it exhibited improved catalytic activities (conv.: 96.8 %) compared with the catalyst (Cpyr)5 PV2 Mo5 W5 O40 [conv.: 88.51 %, Cpyr=(C16 H32 C5 H4 N)+ )], high recyclability and structural stability. Moreover, the conversions and selectivities (conv.: 82.4-92.5 %; sele.: 91.5-95.7 %) of the substrates containing electron donating groups (-OH, -CH3 , -OCH3 and -Cl) were significantly higher than those of the substrate containing electron withdrawing group (-NO2 ) (conv. 67.4 %; sele.: 80.8 %). This is due to the fact that the -NO2 with a large Hammett substituent constant is not conducive to the generation of transition state products. The studies revealed the complex could act as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst in selective oxidation of benzyl alcohols.

Polyoxometalate-Cyclodextrin-Based Cluster-Organic Supramolecular Framework for Polysulfide Conversion and Guest-Host Recognition in Lithium-sulfur Batteries

Developing polyoxometalate-cyclodextrin cluster-organic supramolecular framework (POM-CD-COSF) still remains challenging due to an extremely difficult task in rationally interconnecting two dissimilar building blocks. Here we report an unprecedented POM-CD-COSF crystalline structure produced through the self-assembly process of a Krebs-type POM, [Zn2 (WO2 )2 (SbW9 O33 )2 ]10- , and two β-CD units. The as-prepared POM-CD-COSF-based battery separator can be applied as a lightweight barrier (approximately 0.3 mg cm-2 ) to mitigate the polysulfide shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries. The designed Li-S batteries equipped with the POM-CD-COSF modified separator exhibit remarkable electrochemical performance, attributed to fast Li+ diffusion through the supramolecular channel of β-CD, efficient polysulfide-capture ability by the dynamic host-guest interaction of β-CD, and improved sulfur redox kinetics by the bidirectional catalysis of POM cluster. This research provides a broad perspective for the development of multifunctional supramolecular POM frameworks and their applications in Li-S batteries.

Keggin-Type Anions as Halogen Bond Acceptors

To study the potential of Keggin-type polyoxometalate anions to act as halogen bond acceptors, we have prepared a series of 10 halogen-bonded compounds starting from phosphomolybdic and phosphotungstic acid and halogenopyridinium cations as halogen (and hydrogen) bond donors. In all the structures, the cations and the anions were interconnected by halogen bonds, more often with terminal M=O oxygen atoms than with bridging oxygen atoms as acceptors. In four structures comprising protonated iodopyridinium cations capable of forming both hydrogen and halogen bonds with the anion, the halogen bond with the anion is apparently favored, whereas hydrogen bonds preferentially involve other acceptors present in the structure. In three obtained structures derived from phosphomolybdic acid, the corresponding oxoanion has been found in its reduced state [Mo₁₂PO₄₀]^4-, which has also led to a decrease in halogen bond lengths as compared to the fully oxidated [Mo₁₂PO₄₀]^3-. The electrostatic potential on the three types of anions involved in the study ([Mo₁₂PO₄₀]^3-, [Mo₁₂PO₄₀]^4-, and [W₁₂PO₄₀]^3-) has been calculated for optimized geometries of the anions, and it has been shown that the terminal M=O oxygen atoms are the least negative sites of the anions, indicating that they act as halogen bond acceptors primarily due to their steric availability.

Organic Hybrid Antimoniotungstate Layered Ionic Crystal: Synthesis, Structure, and Interlayer-Confined Proton Conduction

A synchronous crystal- and microstructure-dependent strategy was implemented to synthesize the organic hybrid antimoniotungstate layered ionic crystal Na_5.5H_6.5[(SbW₉O₃₃)₂{WO₂(OH)}₂{WO₂}RuC₇H₃NO₄]·36H₂O, and the layered structure was constructed through the Na⁺ bridged sheet and the hydrogen-bonded layers. It displayed an effective proton conductivity of 2.97 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 348 K and 75% RH, owing to the complete interlayer confined hydrogen-bond network formed by the hydrogens of interlayer crystal waters, organic ligands ({RuC₇H₃NO₄}²⁺, {C₇H₃NO₄} is formed by the hydrolysis of pyridine 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (C₇H₅NO₄)), and acidic protons (H⁺), along with the interlayer domain as a transport channel. Furthermore, the hydrogen-bond network originating from interlayer organic ligands and acidic protons was more stable at a higher temperature of 423 K, preserving a high conductivity of 1.99 × 10^-2 S cm^-1.

Tetrabutyl Ammonium Salts of Keggin-Type Vanadium-Substituted Phosphomolybdates and Phosphotungstates for Selective Aerobic Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

A series of tetrabutyl ammonium (TBA) salts of V-included Keggin-type polyoxoanions with W (TBA4PW11V1O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) and Mo (TBA4PMo11V1O40 and TBA5PMo10V2O40) as addenda atoms were prepared using a hydrothermal method. These synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS UV-Vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CHN elemental analysis (EA), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS), and N2 physisorption techniques to assess their physicochemical/textural properties and correlate them with their catalytic performances. According to FT-IR and DRS UV-Vis, (PVXW(Mo)12−XO40)(3+X)− anions are the main species present in the TBA salts. Additionally, CHN-EA and ICP-MS revealed that the desired stoichiometry was obtained. Their catalytic activities in the liquid-phase aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde were studied at 5 bar of O2 at 170 °C. Independently of the addenda atom nature, the catalytic activity increased with the number of V in the Keggin anion structure. For both series of catalysts, TBA salts of polyoxometalates with the highest V-substitution degree (TBA5PMo10V2O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) showed higher activity. The maximum benzyl alcohol conversions obtained were 93% and 97% using (TBA)5PMo10V2O40 and (TBA)5PW10V2O40 as catalysts, respectively. In all the cases, the selectivity toward benzaldehyde was higher than 99%.

Proton-conducting layered structures based on transition metal oxo-clusters supported by Sb(iii) tartrate scaffolds

Two transition metal-antimony oxo-cluster based compounds, H₅{MCd(H₂O)₆[M(H₂O)₃Co₃Sb^VSb(μ₃-O)₈(l-tta)₆]}·7H₂O (1) (M = Cd_0.5 + Co_0.5) and H₃K₅(H₂O)₁₁{Cd(H₂O)₄[Cd(H₂O)Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₅(μ₃-O)₃(l-tta)₆][Cd(H₂O)₂Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(l-tta)₆][Cd(H₂O)₂Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(l-tta)₆Cd(H₂O)₅]}·17H₂O (2) (L-H₄tta = l-tartaric acid) were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Compound 1 features a [MCo₃Sb^VSb(μ₃-O)₈(l-tta)₆(H₂O)₃]^9- cluster, while compound 2 contains three types of clusters, namely, [Cd(H₂O)Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₅(μ₃-O)₃(l-tta)₆]^4-, [Cd(H₂O)₂Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(l-tta)₆]^4- and [Cd(H₂O)₂Fe₄Cd₂Sb₆(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(l-tta)₆Cd(H₂O)₅]^2-. All the clusters are of sandwich-type with {Sb₃(μ₃-O)(l-tta)} scaffolds on the top and bottom. The Cd (and M in 1) ions interconnect the clusters into layered structures in both compounds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of transition metal-antimony oxo-clusters that simultaneously contain the first-row and second-raw transition metal ions, and compound 1 represents the first example of such type of clusters that contain Sb(v). The two compounds exhibit proton conductivity with the values of 2.43 × 10^-3 and 2.95 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 85 °C under 98% relative humidity, respectively.

Self-Assembled Supramolecular Polyoxometalate Hybrid Architecture as a Multifunctional Oxidation Catalyst

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely applied as tuneable and versatile catalysts for a variety of oxidation reactions in an aqueous/organic two-phase system. However, the practical applications of POMs-based biphasic catalysis are hampered by low space-time yields and mass-transport limitation between two layers due to extremely low solubility of the organic reactants in the aqueous phase. Here, we first introduced β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as an inverse phase transfer agent and a supramolecular nanoreactor to construct a supramolecular POM inorganic-organic hybrid framework (KCl₄)Na₇[(β-CD)₃(SiW₁₂O₄₀)]·9H₂O {3CD@SiW₁₂} for various oxidation catalyses. In contrast to free CD, Keggin [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- catalysts, and their mixture, the {3CD@SiW₁₂} catalyst, efficiently catalyze oxidation reactions of alcohol, alkene, and thiophene. A comprehensive strategy of experimental, crystallographic, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidates that the catalytic pathway involved three combined aspects of supramolecular recognition, phase transfer property, and POM catalysis. The strategic combination of supramolecular characteristic and POM-based catalysts to fabricate supramolecular POM hybrid materials opens up new economic and green tuning options, thus paving the way to informed catalyst design.

Pathways towards true catalysts: computational modelling and structural transformations of Zn-polyoxotungstates

Current catalysis undergoes a paradigm shift from molecular and heterogeneous realms towards new dynamic catalyst concepts. This calls for innovative strategies to understand the essential catalytic motifs and true catalysts emerging from oxidative transformation processes. Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters offer an inexhaustible reservoir for new noble metal-free catalysts and excellent model systems whose structure-activity relationships and mechanisms remain to be explored. Here, we first introduce a new {Zn_nNa_6-n(B-α-SbW₉O₃₃)₂} (n = 3-6) catalyst family with remarkable tuning options of the Zn-based core structure and high activity in H₂O₂-assisted catalytic alcohol oxidation as a representative reaction. Next, high level solution-based computational modelling of the intermediates and transition states was carried out for [Zn₆Cl₆(SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^12- as a representative well-defined case. The results indicate a radical-based oxidation process with the involvement of tungsten and adjacent zinc metal centers. The {Zn_nNa_6-n(B-α-SbW₉O₃₃)₂} series indeed efficiently catalyses alcohol oxidation via peroxotungstate intermediates, in agreement with strong spectroscopic support and other experimental evidence for the radical mechanism. Finally, the high performance of [Zn₆Cl₆(SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^12- was traced back to its transformation into a highly active and robust disordered Zn/W-POM catalyst. The atomic short-range structure of this resting pre-catalyst was elucidated by RMC modelling of the experimental W-L₃ and Zn-K edge EXAFS spectra and supported with further analytical methods. We demonstrate that computational identification of the reactive sites combined with the analytical tracking of their dynamic transformations provides essential input to expedite cluster-based molecular catalyst design.

Syntheses, structures and catalytic properties of Evans–Showell-type polyoxometalate-based 3D metal–organic complexes constructed from the semi-rigid bis(pyridylformyl)piperazine ligand and transition metals

Tetra-Antimony(III)-Bridged 18-Tungsto-2-Arsenates(V), [(LSb(III))4(A-α-As(V)W9O34)2](10-) (L = Ph, OH): Turning Bioactivity On and Off by Ligand Substitution

Two tetra-antimony(III)-bridged, sandwich-type 18-tungsto-2-arsenates(V), [(LSb(III))4(A-α-As(V)W9O34)2](10-) (L = Ph (1), OH (2)), were prepared and fully characterized in the solid state and in solution. Both polyanions are stable in aqueous physiological medium for at least 24 h (at concentrations ≥2.5 × 10(-6) M). Despite the presence of an isostructural tetra-antimony(III) motif in 1 and 2, distinctly different antibacterial activity was observed for both polyanions. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 1 (7.8-62.5 μg/mL) is lower than for any other organoantimony(III)-containing polyoxometalate reported to date.

19-Tungstodiarsenate(III) Functionalized by Organoantimony(III) Groups: Tuning the Structure-Bioactivity Relationship

A family of three discrete organoantimony(III)-functionalized heteropolyanions-[Na{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}As(III)2W19O67(H2O)](10-) (1), [{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}2As(III)2W19O67(H2O)](8-) (2), and [{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}{WO2(H2O)}{WO(H2O)}2(B-β-As(III)W8O30)(B-α-As(III)W9O33)2](14-) (3)-have been prepared by one-pot reactions of the 19-tungstodiarsenate(III) precursor [As(III)2W19O67(H2O)](14-) with 2-(Me2NCH2)C6H4SbCl2. The three novel polyanions crystallized as the hydrated mixed-alkali salts Cs3KNa6[Na{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}As(III)2W19O67(H2O)]·43H2O (CsKNa-1), Rb2.5K5.5[{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}2As(III)2W19O67(H2O)]·18H2O·Me2NCH2C6H5 (RbK-2), and Rb2.5K11.5[{2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)}{WO2(H2O)}{WO(H2O)}2(B-β-As(III)W8O30)(B-α-As(III)W9O33)2]·52H2O (RbK-3), respectively. The number of incorporated {2-(Me2HN(+)CH2)C6H4Sb(III)} units could be tuned by careful control of the experimental parameters. Polyanions 1 and 2 possess a dimeric sandwich-type topology, whereas 3 features a trimeric, wheel-shaped structure, representing the largest organoantimony-containing polyanion. All three compounds were fully characterized in the solid state via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their aqueous solution stability was validated by ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) and multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C, and (183)W) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Effective inhibition against six different types of bacteria was observed for 1 and 2, and we could extract a structure-bioactivity relationship for these polyanions.

Organoantimony(III)-Containing Tungstoarsenates(III): From Controlled Assembly to Biological Activity

A family of three sandwich-type, phenylantimony(III)-containing tungstoarsenates(III), [(PhSb(III) ){Na(H2 O)}As(III) 2 W19 O67 (H2 O)](11-) (1), [(PhSb(III) )2 As(III) 2 W19 O67 (H2 O)](10-) (2), and [(PhSb(III) )3 (B-α-As(III) W9 O33 )2 ](12-) (3), have been synthesized by one-pot procedures and isolated as hydrated alkali metal salts, Cs3 K3.5 Na4.5 [(PhSb(III) ){Na(H2 O)}As(III) 2 W19 O67 (H2 O)]⋅41H2 O (CsKNa-1), Cs4.5 K5.5 [(PhSb(III) )2 As(III) 2 W19 O67 (H2 O)]⋅35H2 O (CsK-2), and Cs4.5 Na7.5 [(PhSb(III) )3 (B-α-As(III) W9 O33 )2 ]⋅42H2 O (CsNa-3). The number of incorporated {PhSb(III) } units could be selectively tuned from one to three by careful control of the reaction parameters. The three compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal XRD, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The aqueous solution stability of sandwich polyanions 1-3 was also studied by multinuclear ((1) H, (13) C, (183) W) NMR spectroscopy. Effective inhibitory activity against six different kinds of bacteria was identified for all three polyanions, for which the activity increased with the number of incorporated {PhSb(III) } groups.

Synthesis, structure and properties of a new three-dimensional interpenetrated metal–organic framework with 3,3′-azodibenzoic acid (H2azdc) and 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane (bimb): {[Cd(azdc)(bimb)2]·H2O}n

A new three-dimensional interpenetrated CdII–organic framework based on 3,3′-azodibenzoic acid [3,3′-(diazenediyl)dibenzoic acid, H2azdc] and the auxiliary flexible ligand 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane (bimb), namely poly[[bis[μ2-1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane-κ2N3:N3′][μ2-3,3′-(diazenediyl)dibenzoato-κ2O:O′]cadmium(II)] monohydrate], {[Cd(C14H8N2O4)(C10H14N2)2]·H2O}n, (1), was obtained by a typical solution reaction in mixed solvents (water andN,N′-dimethylformamide). Each CdIIcentre is six-coordinated by two O atoms of bis-monodentate bridging carboxylate groups from two azdc2−ligands and by four N atoms from four bimb ligands, forming an octahedral coordination environment. The CdIIions are connected by the bimb ligands, resulting in two-dimensional (4,4) layers, which are further pillared by the azdc2−ligands, affording a threefold interpenetrated three-dimensional α-Po topological framework with the Schläfli symbol 41263. The thermal stability and solid-state fluorescence properties of (1) have been investigated.

Binary Pd-polyoxometalates and isolation of a ternary Pd-V-polyoxomolybdate active species for selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols

Binary Pd-polyoxometalates [Pd(dpa)2]3 [PW12 O40]2 ⋅12 DMSO (2), [Pd(dpa)2]3 [PMo12 O40]2 ⋅12 DMSO⋅2 H2 O (3), and [Pd(dpa)(DMSO)2]2 [HPMo10 V2 O40 ]⋅4 DMSO (4) were synthesized by reaction of [Pd(dpa)(OAc)2]⋅2 H2 O (1; dpa=2,2'-dipyridylamine) with three Keggin-type polyoxometalates and fully characterized by single-crystal and powder XRD analyses, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. The synthesis is facile and straightforward, and the complicated ligand-modification procedure often used in the traditional charge-transfer method can be omitted. In 2-4, Pd complexes and polyoxometalate anions are coupled through electrostatic interaction. Compound 4 is more active than the other three compounds in the selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols at ambient pressure. Interestingly, during catalytic recycling of compound 4, unprecedented ternary Pd-V-polyoxometalate [Pd(dpa)2 {VO(DMSO)5}2][PMo12 O40]2 ⋅4 DMSO (5), which was captured and characterized by single-crystal XRD, proved to be the true active species and showed high catalytic activity for the selective aerobic oxidation of aromatic alcohols (98.1-99.8 % conversion, 91.5-99.1 % selectivity). Moreover, on the basis of control experiments and EPR and UV/Vis spectra, a plausible reaction mechanism for the oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by 5 was proposed.

Polyoxometalate complexes for oxidative kinetic resolution of secondary alcohols: unique effects of chiral environment, immobilization and aggregation
