Helicene Appended Benzothiadiazoles as Chiral Emitters

A homologous series of 4,7-bis(aryl) substituted benzothiadiazole (BTD) compounds, containing the helicenic derivatives bis([4]helicene), bis([5]helicene) and bis([6]helicene), have been prepared upon a double Suzuki coupling between 3,6-bis(pinacolyl-borane)-BTD and the corresponding bromo-aryl precursors. The single crystal X-ray structure of the bis([4]helicene) compound shows the existence of both helicities (M) and (P) on the same molecule. All the compounds of the series are highly emissive in solution, with quantum yields of the emission ranging from 50 to 91 %. The enantiopure compounds (M,M) and (P,P) for the BTD-bis([6]helicene) have been prepared from the corresponding enantiopure 2-bromo-[6]helicene precursors. Their chiroptical properties have been investigated in correlation with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which allowed to confidently assign the absolute configuration of the helicene arms and to characterize the different electronic transitions, including the low energy charge transfer excitation from helicenes to BTD. The enantiomerically pure fluorophores (M,M)- and (P,P)-BTD-bis([6]helicene), which exist in solution as two main conformers, according to the DFT calculations, show CPL activity in solution, with glum factors of ≈1.7×10-3 at λem=525 nm, and also in the solid state, with glum factors of ≈1.2×10-3 in spite of the strong decrease of the quantum efficiency.

Chiral Spiro-Tetrathiafulvalenes: Synthesis, Chiroptical Properties, Conformational Issues and Charge Transfer Complexes

Within this work we have investigated spiro-based tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) obtained as mixtures of stereoisomers from racemic spiro[5.5]undeca-1,8-dien-3-one. Compared to previously described spiro-TTFs, enantiomeric and diastereoisomeric forms have been here separated by chiral HPLC and fully characterized both experimentally and theoretically. The two types of spiro-based chiral derivatives contain either one (2) or three (1) chiral centres out of each one is spiro-type. Experimental CD, supported by TD-DFT calculations, shows differences in the optical activity between the 1 and 2 and their intermediates. The low optical activity of 2 and 3 (spiro alone chirality) was attributed to the presence of two conformers in the solution (ax and eq) of opposite Cotton effect whereas in the case of 1 and 5 (spiro and stereogenic centres) the spiro chirality seems to be responsible of the Cotton effect in the high energy region whereas the R and S chirality in the low energy region. Racemic and enantiopure forms have been successfully used for the synthesis of charge transfer complexes with tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) based acceptors.

Synthesis of Closed-Heterohelicenes Interconvertible between Their Monomeric and Dimeric Forms

Oxidative fusion reaction of cyclic heteroaromatic pentads consisting of pyrrole and thiophene gave closed-heterohelicene monomers and dimers depending on the oxidation conditions. Specifically, oxidation with [bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene (PIFA) gave closed-[7]helicene dimers connected at the β-position of one of the pyrrole units with remarkably elongated C-C bonds of about 1.60 Å. Although this bond was intact against thermal and physical activations, homolytic bond dissociation took place in DMSO upon irradiation with UV light to give the corresponding monomers. Thus, interconversion between the closed-helicene monomer and dimer was achieved. The optically pure dimer was photo-dissociated into the monomers associated with a turn-on of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL).

Molecular Compounds in Spintronic Devices: An Intricate Marriage of Chemistry and Physics

Spintronics, a flourishing new field of microelectronics, uses the electron spin for reading and writing information in modern computers and other spintronic devices with a low power consumption and high reliability. In a quest to increase the productivity of such devices, the use of molecular materials as a spacer layer allowed them to perform equally well or even better than conventional all-inorganic heterostructures from metals, alloys, or inorganic semiconductors. In this review, we survey various classes of chemical compounds that have already been tested for this purpose─from organic compounds and coordination complexes to organic-inorganic hybrid materials─since the creation of the first molecule-based spintronic device in 2002. Although each class has its advantages, drawbacks, and applications in molecular spintronics, together they allowed nonchemists to gain insights into spin-related effects and to propose new concepts in the design and fabrication of highly efficient spintronic devices. Other molecular compounds that chemistry could offer in great numbers may soon emerge as suitable spacers or even electrodes in flexible magnetic field sensors, nonvolatile memories, and multifunctional spintronic devices.

Enantioenriched Ruthenium-Tris-Bipyridine Complexes Bearing One Helical Bipyridine Ligand: Access to Fused Multihelicenic Systems and Chiroptical Redox Switches

The synthesis and photophysical and chiroptical properties of novel aza[n]helicenes (6a-d, 10a,b, n = 4-7) substituted with one or two 2-pyridyl groups are described. The preparation was performed via an adapted Mallory reaction using aromatic imines as precursors. The obtained novel class of helical 2,2'-bipyridine ligands was then coordinated to Ru(bipy)₂²⁺ units, thus affording the first diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure [RuL(bipy)₂]²⁺ (11a,c, L = 6a,c) or [Ru₂L'(bipy)₄]⁴⁺ (12, L' = 10b) complexes. The topology and stereochemistry of these novel metal-based helical architectures were studied in detail, notably using X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the coordination to ruthenium(II) enabled the preparation of fused multihelical systems incorporating aza- and ruthena-helicenes within the same scaffold. The photophysical, chiroptical, and redox properties of these complexes were examined in detail, and efficient redox-triggered chiroptical switching activity was evidenced.

Modern History of Organic Conductors: An Overview

This short review article provides the reader with a summary of the history of organic conductors. To retain a neutral and objective point of view regarding the history, background, novelty, and details of each research subject within this field, a thousand references have been cited with full titles and arranged in chronological order. Among the research conducted over ~70 years, topics from the last two decades are discussed in more detail than the rest. Unlike other papers in this issue, this review will help readers to understand the origin of each topic within the field of organic conductors and how they have evolved. Due to the advancements achieved over these 70 years, the field is nearing new horizons. As history is often a reflection of the future, this review is expected to show the future directions of this research field.

A Multiple Chirality Switching Device for Spatial Light Modulators

A new and simple strategy towards electric-field-driven multiple chirality switching device has been designed and fabricated by combining a newly synthesized base-responsive chiroptical polymer switch (R-FLMA) and p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Clear and stable triple chirality states (silence, positive, negative) of this device in visible band can be regulated reversibly (>1000 cycles) by adjusting voltage programs. Furthermore, such chiral switching phenomena are also accompanied by apparent changes of color and fluorescence. More importantly, the potential application of this device for a spatial light modulator has also been demonstrated.

Schiff-base [4]helicene Zn(II) complexes as chiral emitters

The controlled preparation of chiral emissive transition metal complexes is fundamental in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecular materials. For this purpose, enantiopure Zn(ii) complexes 1 and 2 based on a tetradentate salen ligand surrounded by [4]helicene moieties, together with their racemic counterpart 3, have been herein synthesized. Chirality is primarily brought about by chiral 1,2-cyclohexane-diamines. Alternatively, achiral complex 4 based on ortho-phenylene-diamine has been prepared as well. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses have been performed on helicenic intermediates 8 and 9 and complexes 1 and 4. Complexes 1 and 4 display the typical tetradentate O,N,N,O coordination around Zn(ii) characteristic of salen ligands, and bear two [4]helicene moieties. The zinc complexes are luminescent in the visible range around 560 nm at room temperature in aerated solutions with the QY reaching ca. 15% for a luminescence lifetime of 5.5 ns. The optical activities of these complexes have been assessed by CD and CPL, and compared to DFT calculations.

Recent Advances in Functionalizations of Helicene Backbone

Helicenes, chiral members of the family of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, have been increasingly used in a variety of applications in recent years. Despite their intriguing properties, wider utilization is hindered by difficult functionalization of its skeleton, which would provide access to finely tuned derivatives of desired properties. Herein, the recent advancements in the field of helicene functionalization are discussed with an emphasis on different types of transformations, their versatility, and regioselectivity.

Ligand exchange reactions on the chiral Au38 cluster: CD modulation caused by the modification of the ligand shell composition

Ligand exchange reactions have become a highly versatile post-synthetic strategy to accurately engineer the ligand shell of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters. Modifying the chemical structure of the exchanging ligand with chromophore substituents or adding chiral centers allow direct functionalization of the cluster with desired properties. As such, post-functionalized gold nanoclusters with unique physicochemical properties find applications in optoelectronics, catalysis and biomedicine. Herein, we successfully carried out ligand exchange reactions between the chiral Au38(2-PET)24 cluster (both racemic and enantiopure forms) and the helically chiral but configurationally labile 2-thio[4]helicene ligand (TH4). The reaction products with a composition of Au38(2-PET)24-x(TH4)x were analyzed using UV-vis spectroscopy and MALDI mass spectrometry. It was found that up to ten 2-PET ligands can be replaced with the helicene ligand on the cluster surface according to MALDI analysis. Consequently, the UV-vis and CD spectra of the cluster have been strongly affected by the ligand exchange reaction. The intensities of the CD signals of Au38(2-PET)24-x(TH4)x were drastically reduced and red shifted with respect to the reference Au38(2-PET)24 cluster. Moreover, the appearance of the other enantiomer in the HPLC chromatogram revealed the partial racemization of the cluster. DFT calculations were performed and they support the experimental observations and show that the observed chiroptical changes in UV-vis and CD spectra are exchange-site dependent. The calculations also demonstrate that charge transfer (CT) transitions occur between the Au38 cluster and the helicene ligand. Thus the ligand is directly involved in these transitions and contributes to the electronic states comprising those transitions.

Helical Nanographenes Containing an Azulene Unit: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Properties

Three unprecedented helical nanographenes (1, 2, and 3) containing an azulene unit are synthesized. The resultant helical structures are unambiguously confirmed by X‐ray crystallographic analysis. The embedded azulene unit in 2 possesses a record‐high twisting degree (16.1°) as a result of the contiguous steric repulsion at the helical inner rim. Structural analysis in combination with theoretical calculations reveals that these helical nanographenes manifest a global aromatic structure, while the inner azulene unit exhibits weak antiaromatic character. Furthermore, UV/Vis‐spectral measurements reveal that superhelicenes 2 and 3 possess narrow energy gaps (2: 1.88 eV; 3: 2.03 eV), as corroborated by cyclic voltammetry and supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The stable oxidized and reduced states of 2 and 3 are characterized by in‐situ EPR/Vis–NIR spectroelectrochemistry. Our study provides a novel synthetic strategy for helical nanographenes containing azulene units as well as their associated structures and physical properties.

Synthesis of Racemic, Diastereopure, and Enantiopure Carba- or Oxa[5]-, [6]-, [7]-, and -[19]helicene (Di)thiol Derivatives

A series of carba- or oxa[5]-, [6]-, [7]-, and -[19]helicene (di)thiols was prepared. The Miyazaki-Newman-Kwart rearrangement of (dimethylcarbamothioyl)oxy (oxa)helicenes in a flow reactor or nucleophilic substitution of dichloro (oxa)helicenes with alkanethiolates were used in the sulfanylation step. Despite the high temperatures employed in this key step, no conformational scrambling was observed during the asymmetric synthesis of the diastereo- and enantiopure oxahelicenes. Single-molecule conductivity of the longest oxa[19]helicene dithiol derivative was studied by the scanning tunneling microscopy break-junction method.

Chiroptical inversion of a planar chiral redox-switchable rotaxane

A tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-containing crown ether macrocycle with C s symmetry was designed to implement planar chirality into a redox-active [2]rotaxane. The directionality of the macrocycle atom sequence together with the non-symmetric axle renders the corresponding [2]rotaxane mechanically planar chiral. Enantiomeric separation of the [2]rotaxane was achieved by chiral HPLC. The electrochemical properties - caused by the reversible oxidation of the TTF - are similar to a non-chiral control. Reversible inversion of the main band in the ECD spectra for the individual enantiomers was observed after oxidation. Experimental evidence, conformational analysis and DFT calculations of the neutral and doubly oxidised species indicate that mainly electronic effects of the oxidation are responsible for the chiroptical switching. This is the first electrochemically switchable rotaxane with a reversible inversion of the main ECD band.

Synthesis and chiroptical properties of organometallic complexes of helicenic N-heterocyclic carbenes

Novel [4, 6]helicenes (4a,b) bearing a fused imidazolium unit have been prepared from [4, 6]helicene-2,3-di-n-propyl-amines 3a,b. The in situ formation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) derivatives followed by their complexation to iridium(I) or rhodium(I) gave access to complexes 1a, 1'a, and 1b, containing mono-coordinated helicene-NHC, chloro and COD (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) ligands. Ir and Rh complexes 1a and 1'a were characterized by X-ray crystallography. HPLC and NMR analyses showed that Ir(I) complex 1b existed as a mixture of two diastereomeric complexes corresponding to enantiomeric pairs M-(-)/P-(+)-1b¹ and M-(-)/P-(+)-1b² which differ by the position of COD through space. The chiroptical properties (electronic circular dichroism and optical rotation) of the four stereoisomers were measured. These complexes were also tested as catalysts in a transfer hydrogenation reaction.

The fate of bromine after temperature-induced dehydrogenation of on-surface synthesized bisheptahelicene

The dehydrogenation of bisheptahelicene leads to specific products and induces desorption of the side-product bromine as hydrogen bromide.

The on-surface synthesis of bisheptahelicene by Ullmann coupling of 9-bromoheptahelicene on Au(111) and its temperature-induced dehydrogenation is studied using temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Specific dehydrogenation products of bisheptahelicene after loss of 6, 8 and 10 hydrogen atoms are identified, corresponding to molecules having undergone Diels–Alder transformations and intramolecular C–C coupling reactions. By combining with atomic hydrogen produced by dehydrogenation, the Ullmann coupling side-product bromine desorbs as HBr. H₂ desorption emerges only after all Br has desorbed. Such characteristic behavior is explained by a kinetic model which explicitly considers the coverage of transient atomic H on the surface. Heating experiments performed with saturated layers of different Br-containing molecules reveal that the onset of HBr desorption depends strictly on the dehydrogenation step and therefore on the structure of the molecules.

Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Helicene Ligand in the Design of a Dysprosium Field-Induced Single-Molecule Magnet

The design of a coordination complex that involves a ligand combining both a tetrathiafulvalene core and a helicene fragment was achieved thanks to the reaction between the new 2-{1-[2-methyl[6]helicene]-4,5-[4,5-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvalenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl}pyridine ligand (L) and the Dy(hfac)₃·2H₂O metalloprecursor. Magnetic investigations showed field-induced single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior under an applied magnetic field of 1000 Oe for [Dy(hfac)₃(L)]·0.5CH₂Cl₂, while experimentally oriented single-crystal magnetic measurements allowed for determination of the magnetic anisotropy orientation. The magnetic behavior was rationalized through ab initio CASSCF/SI-SO calculations. This redox-active chiral-field-induced SMM paves the way for the design of switchable-multiproperty SMMs.

A redox-active chiral-field-induced single-molecule magnet was achieved through a coordination reaction of the [Dy(hfac)₃] precursor to a ligand that combines a redox-active tetrathiafulvalene core and a chiral carbo[6]helicene fragment. This multiproperty system was characterized using X-ray crystallography, magnetism, and ab initio calculations.

Redox-Active Chiroptical Switching in Mono- and Bis-Iron Ethynylcarbo[6]helicenes Studied by Electronic and Vibrational Circular Dichroism and Resonance Raman Optical Activity

Introducing one or two alkynyl-iron moieties onto a carbo[6]helicene results in organometallic helicenes (2 a,b) that display strong chiroptical activity combined with efficient redox-triggered switching. The neutral and oxidized forms have been studied in detail by electronic and vibrational circular dichroism, as well as by Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed and spectra were assigned with the help of first-principles calculations. In particular, a recently developed method for ROA calculations under resonance conditions has been used to study the intricate resonance effects on the ROA spectrum of mono-iron ethynylhelicene 2 a.

Spontaneous separation of on-surface synthesized tris-helicenes into two-dimensional homochiral domains

The on-surface Ullmann coupling of 2,3-dibromo[4]helicene molecules is studied on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. Bis-helicene and tris-helicene are identified with scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as reaction products. The produced star-shaped tris-helicenes self-assemble on Au(111) spontaneously into large homochiral domains.

Intense redox-driven chiroptical switching with a 580 mV hysteresis actuated through reversible dimerization of an azoniahelicene

Electrochemical reduction of an azoniahelicene affords a dimer, accompanied by a strong change in the electronic circular dichroism. The fast dimerisation event leads to a >500 mV shift of the oxidation potential, affording a large area of bistability, where the chiroptical signal only depends on the redox history.

Anion size control of the packing in the metallic versus semiconducting chiral radical cation salts (DM-EDT-TTF)2XF6 (X = P, As, Sb)

Control of the structural type in metallic enantiopure and racemic radical cation salts is achieved through hydrogen bonding interactions between the chiral donor DM-EDT-TTF and the XF₆ anions (X = P, As, Sb), determined by the anion size and the chiral information.

Triplet state CPL active helicene–dithiolene platinum bipyridine complexes

The first chiral platinum dithiolene 2,2′-bipyridine complexes containing enantiopure [6]helicene-dithiolate ligands show CPL activity.

Triggering Emission with the Helical Turn in Thiadiazole-Helicenes

Introduction of heterocycles into the helical skeleton of helicenes allows modulation of their redox, chiroptical, and photophysical properties. This paper describes the straightforward preparation and structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of thiadiazole-[7]helicene, which was resolved into M and P enantiomers by chiral HPLC, together with its S-shaped double [4]helicene isomer, as well as the smaller congeners thiadiazole-[5]helicene and benzothiadiazole-anthracene. A copper(II) complex with two thiadiazole-[5]helicene ligands was structurally characterized, and it shows the presence of both M and P isomers coordinated to the metal center. The emission properties of the heterohelicenes are highly dependent on the helical turn, as the [7]- and [5]helicene are poorly emissive, whereas their isomers, that is, the S-shaped double [4]helicene and thiadiazole-benzanthracene, are luminescent, with quantum efficiencies of 5.4 and 6.5 %, respectively. DFT calculations suggest quenching of the luminescence of enantiopure [7]helicenes through an intersystem-crossing mechanism arising from the relaxed excited S1 state.

Localization versus Delocalization in Chiral Single Component Conductors of Gold Bis(dithiolene) Complexes

The first examples of chiral single component conductors are reported. Both (S,S) and (R,R) enantiomers of 5,6-dimethyl-5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate (dm-dddt) ligand have been used to prepare anionic metal bis(dithiolene) complexes formulated as ([(n-Bu)4N][M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni), which are isostructural according to single crystal X-ray analysis. Single crystal transport measurements indicate semiconducting behavior for the anionic radical Ni complexes, with low room temperature conductivity values and high activation energies. Electrocrystallization experiments provided neutral [M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni) complexes. The neutral radical gold compounds show intermolecular S···S interactions in the solid state giving rise to layers interconnected through weak C-H···S hydrogen bonds. The most peculiar structural feature concerns a dissymmetry between the two dithiolene moieties, while the nickel counterpart is symmetric. Single crystal resistivity measurements show thermally activated behavior for the open-shell gold complexes, with room temperature conductivity values of 0.02-0.04 S·cm(-1) and activation energies strongly influenced by hydrostatic pressure. A thorough theoretical study on nickel anion radical and gold neutral radical bis(dithiolene) complexes applied to the chiral complexes [M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni(-)) and to a series of previously reported compounds addressed the issue of symmetry versus asymmetry from an electronic coupling perspective between the two dithiolene ligands. It results that neutral gold complexes with dithiolene ligands without extended delocalization are Class II mixed-valent compounds in the Robin and Day classification, presenting an inherent tendency toward asymmetric structures, which can be however modulated by the intermolecular organization in the solid state.

Electronic Structures and Chiroptical Properties of Post-functionalized Helicene Quinones

The synthesis of redox-active p- and o-quinones 2-phenylamino-4-phenylimino[6]helicene-1-one 1, 2-phenylamino[6]-helicene-1,4-dione 2, and 4-phenyl[6]helicene-1,2-dione 3 in their enantiopure forms by post-functionalization of (P)- and (M)-1,2-dimethoxy[6]helicene is presented. Structural characterization in solution and in the solid state was accomplished by 2D NMR spectroscopy methods and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. Interpretation of electrochemical redox data was accompanied by a detailed orbital picture, derived from DFT calculations. The electronic structures of compounds 1-3 were investigated by UV/Vis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy, complemented by TD-DFT calculations. Quinones 1-3 were chemically reduced to study the EPR signatures of their respective radical anions. DFT methods were used for the atom assignment of the hyperfine coupling constants. The results are discussed within the context of electrochromic chiral switches and molecular recognition.

Functionalized cationic [4]helicenes with unique tuning of absorption, fluorescence and chiroptical properties up to the far-red range

Unprecedented regioselective post-functionalization of racemic and enantiopure cationic diaza [4]helicenes is afforded. The peripheral auxochrome substituents allow a general tuning of the electrochemical, photophysical and chiroptical properties of the helical dyes (26 examples). For instance, electronic absorption and circular dichroism are modulated from the orange to near-infrared spectral range (575-750 nm), fluorescence quantum efficiency is enhanced up to 0.55 (631 nm) and circularly polarized luminescence is recorded in the red (|g_lum| ∼ 10^-3).

Helicenes--A New Class of Organic Spin Filter

Chiral helicene, a fully conjugated system without stereogenic carbon, can filter spins effectively at room temperature, a consequence of the chiral-induced spin-selectivity effect. The chirality dictates the spin of the electrons transferred through helicene, and magnetoresistance devices based on these molecules show antisymmetric magnetoresistance versus H plots.

Zwitterionic [4]helicene: a water-soluble and reversible pH-triggered ECD/CPL chiroptical switch in the UV and red spectral regions

The chiroptical switching properties of a readily accessible and water-soluble diaza [4]helicene are disclosed.
