Abstract
We report a rhenium diimine photosensitizer equipped with a peripheral disulfide unit on one of the bipyridine ligands, [Re(CO)3(bpy)(S-Sbpy4,4)]+ (1+, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, S-Sbpy4,4 = [1,2]dithiino[3,4-c:6,5-c']dipyridine), showing anti-Kasha luminescence. Steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopies complemented by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations are used to disclose its excited-state dynamics. The calculations show that after intersystem crossing the complex evolves to two different triplet minima: a (S-Sbpy4,4)-ligand-centered excited state (3LC) lying at lower energy and a metal-to-(bpy)-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) state at higher energy, with relative yields of 90% and 10%, respectively. The 3LC state involves local excitation of the disulfide group into the antibonding σ* orbital, leading to significant elongation of the S-S bond. Intriguingly, it is the higher-lying 3MLCT state, which is assigned to display luminescence with a lifetime of 270 ns: a signature of anti-Kasha behavior. This assignment is consistent with an energy barrier ≥ 0.6 eV or negligible electronic coupling, preventing reaction toward the 3LC state after the population is trapped in the 3MLCT state. This study represents a striking example on how elusive excited-state dynamics of transition-metal photosensitizers can be deciphered by synergistic experiments and state-of-the-art calculations. Disulfide functionalization lays the foundation of a new design strategy toward harnessing excess energy in a system for possible bimolecular electron or energy transfer reactivity.

Abstract
The present work shows the pivotal role of N-donor substituents attached to 1,10-phenanthroline at the 4,7-positions in perturbation of ground- and excited-state properties of fac-[ReCl(CO)3(R2phen)]. Excited-state processes occurring upon photoexcitation in the designed systems were thoroughly explored with a wide range of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques, including transient absorption, as well as experimental results were complemented by theoretical studies based on the density functional theory (DFT). It was demonstrated that the attachment of six-membered heterocyclic amines (piperidine─ppr, morpholine─mor, and thiomorpholine─tmor) is a very effective tool for extending absorptivity and excited-state lifetimes of resulting fac-[ReCl(CO)3(R2phen)] due to the contribution of the excited state localized on the phenanthroline-based ligand. Both absorption and emission properties of these systems were attributed to configurationally mixed MLCT/IL excited states. Re(I) complexes with phenoxazine (pxz) and phenothiazine (ptz) substituents were shown to possess charge-separated excited states, clearly evidenced by the simultaneous presence of signals typical of phen-* and pxz+* or ptz+* in transient absorption spectra. Both complexes are rare examples of NIR light-emitting coordination compounds. The decoration of the phen framework with less polar 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (dmac) groups resulted in the formation of [ReCl(CO)3(R2phen)] with mixed 3MLCT/3ILCT triplet excited state.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of eleven different 2-(thienyl)quinoxaline species that incorporate different points of functionality, including at the thiophene or quinoxaline rings, are described. These species display variable fluorescence properties in the visible region (λem = 401-491 nm) depending upon the molecular structures and extent of conjugation. The series of 2-(thienyl)quinoxaline species were then investigated as cyclometalating agents for Ir(III) to yield [Ir(C^N)2(bipy)]PF6 (where C^N = the cyclometalated ligand; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Eight complexes were successfully isolated and fully characterised by an array of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Two Ir(III) examples were structurally characterised in the solid state using single crystal X-ray diffraction; both structures confirmed the proposed formulations and coordination spheres in each case showing that the thiophene coordinates via a Ir-C bond. The photophysical properties of the complexes revealed that each complex is luminescent under ambient conditions with a range of emission wavelengths observed (665-751 nm) indicating that electronic tuning can be achieved via both the thienyl and quinoxaline moieties.

Abstract
A series of six new rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes [Re(CO)3(N-N)Br] bearing sulfur-bridged dipyridyl (N-N) ligands with three different oxidation states (sulfide (S), sulfoxide (SO), and sulfone (SO2)) are described. Spectroscopic studies show that changing the oxidation state of the ligands influences the photophysical properties of the complexes, with complexes 3 and 6 containing the sulfone ligand exhibiting a lower energy MLCT absorption band tailing into the visible region. Solution-state emission measurements show that these complexes exhibit readily tunable emission energies from 480 to 610 nm, depending on the oxidation state of the sulfur bridge and the presence of substituents on the pyridyl rings. Solid-state emission measurements show that the emission is significantly red-shifted upon oxidation of the sulfur bridge to sulfone with enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield.

Abstract
Photophysical properties of two Re(I) complexes [ReCl(CO)3(R-C6H4-terpy-κ2N)] with remote amine groups, N-methyl-piperazinyl (1) and (2-cyanoethyl)methylamine (2), were investigated. The complexes show strong absorption in the visible region corresponding to metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) and intraligand-charge-transfer (1ILCT) transitions. The energy levels of 3MLCT and 3ILCT excited-states, and thus photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2, were found to be strongly affected by the solvent polarity. Compared to the parent chromophore [ReCl(CO)3(C6H5-terpy-κ2N)] (3), both designed complexes show significantly prolonged (by 1–2 orders of magnitude) phosphorescence lifetimes in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide, contrary to their lifetimes in less polar chloroform and tetrahydrofuran, which are comparable to those for 3. The femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) measurements confirmed the interconversion between the 3MLCT and 3ILCT excited-states in polar solvents. In contrast, the emissive state of 1 and 2 in less polar environments is of predominant 3MLCT nature.

Abstract
Metal complex luminophores have seen dramatic expansion in application as imaging probes over the past decade. This has been enabled by growing understanding of methods to promote their cell permeation and intracellular targeting. Amongst the successful approaches that have been applied in this regard is peptide-facilitated delivery. Cell-permeating or signal peptides can be readily conjugated to metal complex luminophores and have shown excellent response in carrying such cargo through the cell membrane. In this article, we describe the rationale behind applying metal complexes as probes and sensors in cell imaging and outline the advantages to be gained by applying peptides as the carrier for complex luminophores. We describe some of the progress that has been made in applying peptides in metal complex peptide-driven conjugates as a strategy for cell permeation and targeting of transition metal luminophores. Finally, we provide key examples of their application and outline areas for future progress.

Abstract
Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials' properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero)aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels-Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extrusion of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, or sulphur dioxide. When pyranones, dioxothiophenes, or cyclopentadienones and DA cycloaddition are aided with acetylenes including masked ones, conjugated or isolated diynes, or polyynes and arynes, aromatic systems are obtained. This review covers the development and the current state of knowledge regarding thermal DA cycloaddition of dienes mentioned above and dienophiles leading to (hetero)aromatics via CO, CO2, or SO2 extrusion. Particular attention was paid to the role that introduced aromatic moieties play in designing molecular structures with expected properties. Undoubtedly, the DAC variants described in this review, combined with other modern synthetic tools, constitute a convenient and efficient way of obtaining functionalized nanomaterials, continually showing the potential to impact materials sciences and new technologies in the nearest future.

Abstract
In the present study, the photophysical properties and preliminary time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) data of new rhenium(i) polypyridyl compounds, fac-[Re(L)(Am2phen)(CO)3]0/+, where Am2phen = 4,7-diamine-1,10-phenanthroline and L = Cl and ethyl isonicotinate (et-isonic), provided new insights into excited-state deactivation through an unusual inversion between two metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states. In addition, their cellular uptake using breast cancer (MCF-7) and melanoma (SkMel-147 and SkMel-29) cell lines and bioactivity were investigated and their cell-killing mechanism and protein expression were also studied. Preliminary TD-DFT results showed that both compounds exhibited a strong and broad absorption band around 300-400 nm which corresponds to a combination of ILAm2phen and MLCTRe→Am2phen transitions, and a strong contribution of charge transfer transition MLCTRe→et-isonic for fac-[Re(et-isonic)(Am2phen)(CO)3]+ is also observed. In contrast to typical Re(i) polypyridyl complexes, the substitution of Cl with the et-isonic ligand showed a bathochromic shift of the emission maxima, relatively low emission quantum yield and fast lifetime. Photophysical investigation of the fac-[ReCl(et-isonic)2(CO)3] compound provided meaningful information on the excited state manifold of the fac-[Re(L)(Am2phen)(CO)3]0/+ complexes. As shown in the absorption profile, a remarkable inversion of the lowest-lying excited state takes place from the usually observed MLCTRe→Am2phen to the unusual MLCTRe→et-isonic. The lipophilicity of the positive-complex was higher than that of the non-charge compound and the same trend for the activity against cells was observed, in the absence of light. In addition, flow cytometry and Western Blot analyses showed an overexpression of pro-caspase-9, suggesting a caspase proteolytic cascade through an intrinsic-pathway apoptosis mechanism. The photophysical properties of these compounds reported herein provide new fundamental insights into the understanding of substituent groups on polypyridyl ligands which are relevant to practical development.

Abstract
A 2,2'-bipyridine with bulky triphenylamine substituents in the 6 and 6' positions of the ligand (6,6'-ditriphenylamine-2,2'-bipyridine, 6,6'-diTPAbpy) was generated. Despite the steric bulk, the ligand readily formed bis(homoleptic) complexes with copper(I) and silver(I) ions. Unfortunately, efforts to use the 6,6'-diTPAbpy system to generate heteroleptic [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(bpy)]+ complexes were unsuccessful with only the [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2](PF6) complex observed. The 6,6'-diTPAbpy ligand could also be reacted with 6-coordinate metal ions that featured small ancillary ligands, namely, the [Re(CO)3Cl] and [Ru(CO)2Cl2] fragments. While the complexes could be formed in good yields, the steric bulk of the TPA units does alter the coordination geometry. This is most readily seen in the [(6,6'-diTPAbpy)Re(CO)3Cl] complex where the Re(I) ion is forced to sit 23° out of the plane formed by the bpy unit. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the family of compounds were also examined. 6,6'-diTPAbpy exhibits a strong ILCT absorption band (356 nm, 50 mM-1 cm-1) which displays a small increase in intensity for the homoleptic complexes ([Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2]+; 353 nm, 72 mM-1 cm-1, [Ag(6,6'-diTPAbpy)2]+; 353 nm, 75 mM-1 cm-1), despite containing 2 equiv of the ligand, attributed to an increased dihedral angle between the TPA and bpy moieties. For the 6-coordinate complexes the ILCT band is further decreased in intensity and overlaps with MLCT bands, consistent with a further increased TPA-bpy dihedral angle. Emission from the 1ILCT state is observed at 436 nm (τ = 4.4 ns) for 6,6'-diTPAbpy and does not shift for the Cu, Ag, and Re complexes, although an additional 3MLCT emission is observed for [Re(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)3Cl] (640 nm, τ = 13.8 ns). No emission was observed for [Ru(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)2Cl2]. Transient absorption measurements revealed the population of a 3ILCT state for the Cu and Ag complexes (τ = 80 ns). All assignments were supported by TD-DFT calculations and resonance Raman spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract
The optical properties of two Re(CO)3(bpy)Cl complexes in which the bpy is substituted with two donor (triphenylamine, TPA, ReTPA2) as well as both donor (TPA) and acceptor (benzothiadiazole, BTD, ReTPA-BTD) groups are presented. For ReTPA2 the absorption spectra show intense intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) bands at 460 nm with small solvatochromic behavior; for ReTPA-BTD the ILCT transitions are weaker. These transitions are assigned as TPA → bpy transitions as supported by resonance Raman data and TDDFT calculations. The excited-state spectroscopy shows the presence of two emissive states for both complexes. The intensity of these emission signals is modulated by solvent. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy definitively assigns the excited states present in CH2Cl2 to be MLCT in nature, and in MeCN the excited states are ILCT in nature. DFT calculations indicated this switching with solvent is governed by access to states controlled by spin-orbit coupling, which is sufficiently different in the two solvents, allowing to select out each of the charge-transfer states.

The ground- and excited-state properties of three novel complexes [ReCl(CO)3(Ln-κ2N)] bearing 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-di(pyrazin-2-yl)pyridine functionalized with 9-carbazole attached to the central pyridine ring of the triimine core via phenylene linkage were investigated by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods and were simulated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. To get a deeper and broader understanding of structure-property relationships, the designed Re(i) carbonyl complexes were compared with previously reported analogous systems - without any groups attached to the phenyl ring and bearing pyrrolidine instead of 9-carbazole. The results indicated that attachment of the N-carbazolyl substituent to the triimine core has less influence on the nature of the triplet excited state of [ReCl(CO)3(Ln-κ2N)] than the pyrrolidine group. Additionally, the impact of the ligand structural modifications on the light emission of the Re(i) complexes under external voltage was preliminarily examined with electroluminescence spectra of diodes containing the synthesized new molecules in an active layer.

Abstract
The reaction of [Re(CO)3(THF)(μ-Br)]2 or [Re(CO)5X] (X = Cl, Br, I) with the diaryl-2-azabutadienes [(RS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CAr2] containing two thioether arms at the 4,4-position forms the luminescent S,N-chelate complexes fac-[(OC)3ReX{(RS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CAr2}] (1a-h). The halide abstraction by silver triflate converts [(OC)3ReCl{(PhS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2}] (1c) to [(OC)3Re(OS([double bond, length as m-dash]O)2CF3){(PhS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2}] (1j) bearing a covalently bound triflate ligand. The cyclic voltammograms reveal reversible S^N ligand-centred reduction and irreversible oxidation waves for all complexes. The crystal structures of nine octahedral complexes have been determined along with that of (NaphtylS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2 (L6). A rich system of weak non-covalent intermolecular secondary interactions through CHX(Cl, Br)Re, CHO, COπ(Ph), CHπCO, CHO and CHS contacts has been evidenced. The photophysical properties have been investigated by steady-state and time-resolved absorption (fs transient absorption, fs-TAS) and emission (ns-TCSPC and ps-Streak camera) spectroscopy in 2-MeTHF solution at 298 and 77 K. The emission bands are composed of either singlet (450 < λmax < 535 nm) and/or triplet emissions (at 77 K only, λmax < 640 nm, or appearing as a tail at λ > 600 nm), which decay in a multiexponential manner for the fluorescence (short ps (i.e. <IRF) < τF < 1.9 ns at 298 and 77 K) and monoexponentially for the phosphorescence (4.0 < τP < 7.0 ns at 77 K). The fs-TAS data reveal the presence of 2 to 4 transient species decaying in four narrow time windows (generally 125-165 fs, 370-685 fs, 3-6 ps, 30-45 ps). The complexity of these kinetics was explained by studying the photophysical behaviour of ligand L6. Its behaviour is the same as the complexes thus indicating that the ligand dictates the kinetic traits of the Re-species, except for the triplet emission as L6 is not phosphorescent. The triplet lifetime (4.0 < τP < 7.0 ns) is considered very short but not unprecedented. Furthermore, the nature of the lowest energy excited states of these chelate compounds and L6 has been addressed using DFT and TDDFT calculations and been assigned to metal-to-ligand (MLCT) and/or intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT).

Abstract
The lysozyme binding affinity and the electronic properties of [ReX(CO)3(terpy-κ2N1,N2)] (X = Br- and triazolateCOOCH2CH3,CF3) were reported. The triazolate complex was prepared in a [3 + 2] cycloaddition click reaction. The bromo compound reacted with lysozyme affording adducts with Re(CO)3+ fragments, while the triazolate compound persisted. A red shift of the MLCT band of the triazolate compound in progressively less polar solvents may be due to the negative solvatochromism.

Abstract
Catalyst-free [3+2] cycloaddition coupling between [Ren(N3)n(CO)3nL] (n = 1, L = 1-ethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzimidazole (L1) and n = 2, L = 1,1′-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole] (L2)) and dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) afforded mono- and binuclear triazolate complexes. Spectroscopic data presented unambiguous evidence for isomerization of the kinetically formed N(1) bound triazolate isomer into the N(2) analogue. The solvatochromism properties were assessed by UV/Vis spectroscopy with the aid of time dependent density functional theory calculations. The free ligands and their tricarbonyl triazolato Re(i) complexes were screened for their potential antimicrobial activity against different bacterial and fungal pathogens. The antimicrobial activity and solvatochromism properties of mono- and binuclear tricarbonyl triazolato Re(i) complexes of pyridylbenzimidazole, formed by catalyst-free [3+2] cycloaddition reaction, were examined.![]()

Abstract
The combined action of ultraviolet irradiation and microwave heating onto acetonitrile solution of [Re( N N )(CO)3 (NCMe)]OTf ( N N =phenantroline and neocuproine) afforded cis,trans-Re( N N )(CO)2 (NCMe)2 ]+ acetonitrile derivatives. Substitution of relatively labile NCMe with a series of aromatic N-donor ligands (pyridine, pyrazine, 4,4'-bipyridine, N-methyl-4,4'-bipyridine) gave a novel family of the diimine cis,trans-[Re( N N )(CO)2 (L)2 ]+ complexes. Photophysical studies of the obtained compounds in solution revealed unusually high absorption across the visible region and NIR phosphorescence with emission band maxima ranging from 711 to 805 nm. The nature of emissive excited states was studied using DFT calculations to show dominant contribution of 3 MLCT (dπ(Re)→π*( N N )) character. Electrochemical (CV and DPV) studies of the monocationic diimine complexes revealed one reduction and one oxidation wave assigned to reduction of the diimine moiety and oxidation of the rhenium center, respectively.

Abstract
A novel fluorophore (HL) [1-((E)-(quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)anthracen-2-ol] using a suitably designed anthrol and quinoline derivative was synthesized and well characterized. Then, two Re(I) complexes with the fac-[Re(CO)3] + moiety were prepared with the ligand under different reaction conditions. Both the complexes [Re(L)(CO)3] (1) and [Re(HL)(CO)3Cl] (2) absorbed in the visible region. Steady-state fluorescence measurements and time-correlated single-photon count experiments were performed to elucidate the nature of the excited state. The ground- and excited-state geometries were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electrical properties of the ligand and the complexes have been explored with the help of a sandwich-structured thin-film device of an Al/sample/indium tin oxide (ITO) configuration at room temperature. The thermionic emission (TE) theory was adopted for the extraction of Schottky diode parameters such as ideality factor, barrier height, and series resistance. Further, the space-charge-limited current (SCLC) theory was employed for a better understanding of the charge transport phenomenon.

Abstract
By attaching pyridine groups to a diaza[6]helicene, a helical, bis-ditopic, bis-N N-coordinating ligand can be accessed. Dinuclear rhenium complexes featuring this bridging ligand, of the form [{Re(CO)3 Cl}2 (N N-N N)], have been prepared and resolved to give enantiopure complexes. These complexes are phosphorescent in solution at room temperature under one- and two-photon excitation. Their experimental chiroptical properties (optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized emission) have been measured. They show, for instance, emission dissymmetry factors of c.a. ±3x10-3 . Quantum-chemical calculations indicate the importance of stereochemistry on the optical activity, pointing towards further design improvements in such types of complexes.

Abstract
A comparative theoretical study on the reactivity of the complexes [ReY(CO)3(bipy)] (Y = NH2, NHMe, NHpTol, OH, OMe, OPh, PH2, PHMe, PMe2, PHPh, PPh2, PMePh, SH, SMe, SPh; bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) towards methyl propiolate was carried out to analyze the influence of both the heteroatom (N, O, P, S) and the alkyl and/or aryl substituents of the Y ligand on the nature of the product obtained. The methyl substituent tends to accelerate the reactions. However, an aromatic ring bonded to N and O makes the reaction more difficult, whereas its linkage to P and S favour it. On the whole, ligands with O and S heteroatoms seem to disfavour these processes more than ligands with N and P heteroatoms, respectively. Phosphido and thiolato ligands tend to yield a coupling product with the bipy ligand, which is not the general case for hydroxo, alcoxo or amido ligands. When the Y ligand has an O/N and an H atom the most likely product is the one containing a coupling with the carbonyl ligand, which is not always obtained when Y contains P/S. Only for OMe and OPh, the product resulting from formal insertion into the Re-Y bond is the preferred.

Abstract
Series of Re(I) carbonyls complexes were designed and synthesized to explore the impact of the triimine skeleton and number of methoxy groups attached to aryl substituents on their optoelectronic and thermal properties. The chemical structures of the prepared complexes were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, HR-MS, elemental anlsysis, and X-ray measurements. DSC measuremtns showed that they melted in the range of 198-325 °C. Some of them form stable molecular glasses with high glass transition temperatures (158-173 °C). Experimentally obtained optical properties were supported by DFT calculations. The UV-Vis spectra display a series of overlapping absorption bands in the range 200-350 nm, and much weaker broad band in the visible spectral region, due to intraligand and charge transfer transitions, respectively. All synthesized complexes were emissive in solution and in solid state as powder. Moreover, when applied in diodes, some of them exhibited ability for emission of light under external voltage with maximum of electroluminescence band located at 591-630 nm.

Abstract
Three Re(i) carbonyl complexes [ReCl(CO)3(Ln)] bearing 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, and 1,10-phenanthroline functionalized with diphenylamine/or triphenylamine units (L1-L3) were synthesized to explore the impact of highly electron donating units appended to the imine ligand on the thermal and optoelectronic properties of Re(i) systems. Additionally, for comparison, the ligands L1-3 and parent complexes [ReCl(CO)3(bipy)], [ReCl(CO)3(phen)] and [ReCl(CO)3(terpy-κ2N)] were investigated. The thermal stability was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry. The ground- and excited-state electronic properties of the Re(i) complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy, as well as using density-functional theory (DFT). The majority of the compounds form amorphous molecular materials with high glass transition temperatures above 100 °C. Compared to the unsubstituted complexes [ReCl(CO)3(bipy)], [ReCl(CO)3(phen)] and [ReCl(CO)3(terpy-κ2N)], the HOMO-LUMO gap of the corresponding Re(i) systems bearing modified imine ligands is reduced, and the decrease in the value of the ΔEH-L is mainly caused by the increase in HOMO energy level. In relation to the parent complexes, all designed Re(i) carbonyls were found to show enhanced photoluminescence, both in solution and in solid state. The investigated ligands and complexes were also preliminarily tested as luminophores in light emitting diodes with the structures ITO/PEDOT:PSS/compound/Al and ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK:PBD:compound/Al. The pronounced effect of the ligand chemical structure on electroluminescence ability was clearly visible.

Abstract
The electropolymerized films of poly(L)n on an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode was prepared by anodic electrooxidation of a dichloromethane solution of a triphenylamine-carrying organic molecule L and were characterized/studied by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and photoelectrochemical measurements. Poly(L)n films were found to show surface-controlled TPA•+1/0 associated quasi-reversible redox and exceptionally high photocurrent generation properties. At a zero external bias potential and under 100 mW/cm2 white light irradiation, a photoelectrochemical device composed of a poly(L)1-modified ITO as the working electode, a platinum disk counter electrode, and saturated calomel electrode reference electrode in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution exhibited a significant cathode photocurrent density of 2.2 μA/cm2, which could be switched to be anodic and outperform most previously reported molecule-based modified ITO electrodes under similar experimental conditions. The results indicate that poly(L)n films offer a number of future perspectives ranging from organic photovoltaic to photoelectrochemical catalysis and sensing.

Abstract
fac-[ReBr(CO)3(L1,2)] L1 = 1-ethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzimidazole (1) and L2 = 1-[(pyridin-2-yl) benzimidazole]-propyl-sulfonic acid (2), fac-[Re2Br2(CO)6L3] (3) L3 = 1,1'-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)1H-benzimidazole] and fac-[ReBr(CO)3(L4,5-κ2N1N2)] (L4 = 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine (4) and L5 = 2,6-bis(1-ethyl-benzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine (5) were synthesized and fully characterized using different spectrocopic and analytical tools. The spectrocopic data showed coordination of L1-3 to fac-ReBr(CO)3 via the benzimidazole and pyridine N-atoms. For 4 and 5, the absence of a two-fold axis of symmetry for L4,5 in the 1H NMR spectra reflect the κ2N1,N2 mode of coordination. The electronic properties of 1-5 were investigated by time-dependent density functional theory calculations in the singlet and triplet states. The ligands and their Re(i) complexes were assessed for their potential antimicrobial activity. Compound 5 was screened against non-malignant cell line (noncancerous human embryonic kidney cell line (HEK293)) as well as evaluated for its blood compatibility.

Abstract
The reactions of labile [Re(diimine)(CO)3(H2O)]+ precursors (diimine = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) with dicyanoargentate anion produce the dirhenium cyanide-bridged compounds [{Re(diimine)(CO)3}2CN)]+ (1 and 2). Substitution of the axial carbonyl ligands in 2 for triphenylphosphine gives the derivative [{Re(phen)(CO)2(PPh3)}2CN]+ (3), while the employment of a neutral metalloligand [Au(PPh3)(CN)] affords heterobimetallic complex [{Re(phen)(CO)3}NCAu(PPh3)]+ (4). Furthermore, the utilization of [Au(CN)2]-, [Pt(CN)4]2-, and [Fe(CN)6]4-/3- cyanometallates leads to the higher nuclearity aggregates [{Re(diimine)(CO)3NC} xM] m+ (M = Au, x = 2, 5 and 6; Pt, x = 4, 7 and 8; Fe, x = 6, 9 and 10). All novel compounds were characterized crystallographically. Assemblies 1-8 are phosphorescent both in solution and in the solid state; according to the DFT analysis, the optical properties are mainly associated with charge transfer from Re tricarbonyl motif to the diimine fragment. The energy of this process can be substantially modified by the properties of the ancillary ligands that allows to attain near-IR emission for 3 (λem = 737 nm in CH2Cl2). The Re-FeII/III complexes 9 and 10 are not luminescent but exhibit low energy absorptions, reaching 846 nm (10) due to ReI → FeIII transition.

Abstract
A series of diimine ligands has been designed on the basis of 2-pyridyl-1 H-phenanthro[9,10- d]imidazole (L1, L2). Coupling the basic motif of L1 with anthracene-containing fragments affords the bichromophore compounds L3-L5, of which L4 and L5 adopt a donor-acceptor architecture. The latter allows intramolecular charge transfer with intense absorption bands in the visible spectrum (lowest λabs 464 nm (ε = 1.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and 490 nm (ε = 5.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) in CH2Cl2 for L4 and L5, respectively). L1-L5 show strong fluorescence in a fluid medium (Φem = 22-92%, λem 370-602 nm in CH2Cl2); discernible emission solvatochromism is observed for L4 and L5. In addition, the presence of pyridyl (L1-L5) and dimethylaminophenyl (L5) groups enables reversible alteration of their optical properties by means of protonation. Ligands L1-L5 were used to synthesize the corresponding [Re(CO)3X(diimine)] (X = Cl, 1-5; X = CN, 1-CN) complexes. 1 and 2 exhibit unusual dual emission of singlet and triplet parentage, which originate from independently populated 1ππ* and 3MLCT excited states. In contrast to the majority of the reported Re(I) carbonyl luminophores, complexes 3-5 display moderately intense ligand-based fluorescence from an anthracene-containing secondary chromophore and complete quenching of emission from the 3MLCT state presumably due to the triplet-triplet energy transfer (3MLCT → 3ILCT).

Abstract
New heteroleptic compounds of platinum(II)-containing cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbenes, [PtCl(R-C^C*)(PPh3)] [R-CH^C*-κC* = 3-methyl-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R-C = Naph; 1A), 1-[4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene (R = CO2Et; 1B), and [Pt(R-C^C*)(py)(PPh3)]PF6 (py = pyridine; R-C = Naph, 2A; R = CO2Et, 2B], have been prepared and fully characterized. All of them were obtained as the trans-(C*,PPh3) isomer in high yields. The selectivity of their synthesis has been explained in terms of the degree of transphobia (T) of pairs of ligands in trans positions. X-ray diffraction studies on both 2A and 2B revealed that only in 2A, containing a C^C* with a more extended π system, do the molecules assemble themselves into head-to-tail pairs through intermolecular π···π contacts. The photophysical properties of 2A and 2B and those of the related compounds [Pt(NC-C^C*)(PPh3)L]PF6 [NC-CH^C*-κC* = 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene; L = pyridine (py; 2C), 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide (CNXyl; 3C), and 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI; 4C)] have been examined to analyze the influence of the R substituent on R-C^C* (R-C = Naph; R = CO2Et, CN) and that of the ancillary ligands (L) on them. Experimental data and time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed the similarity of the electronic features associated with R-C^C* (R = CN, CO2Et) and their difference with respect to R-C^C* (R-C = Naph). All of the compounds are very efficient blue emitters in poly(methyl methacrylate) films under an argon atmosphere, with QY values ranging from 68% (2B) to 93% (2C). In the solid state, the color of the emission changes to yellowish-orange for compounds 2A (λmax = 600 nm) and 3C (λmax = 590 nm) because of the formation of aggregates through intermolecular π···π interactions. 2C and 3C were chosen to fabricate fully solution-processed electroluminescent devices with blue-light (2C), yellow-orange-light (3C), and white-light (mixtures of 2C and 3C) emission from neat films of the compounds as emitting layers.

Abstract
A meta-terphenyl unit was substituted with an isocyanide group on each of its two terminal aryls to afford a bidentate chelating ligand (CNtBuAr3NC) that is able to stabilize chromium in its zerovalent oxidation state. The homoleptic Cr(CNtBuAr3NC)3 complex luminesces in solution at room temperature, and its excited-state lifetime (2.2 ns in deaerated THF at 20 °C) is nearly 2 orders of magnitude longer than the current record lifetime for isoelectronic Fe(II) complexes, which are of significant interest as earth-abundant sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. Due to its chelating ligands, Cr(CNtBuAr3NC)3 is more robust than Cr(0) complexes with carbonyl or monodentate isocyanides, manifesting in comparatively slow photodegradation. In the presence of excess anthracene in solution, efficient energy transfer and subsequent triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion is observed. With an excited-state oxidation potential of -2.43 V vs Fc+/Fc, the Cr(0) complex is a very strong photoreductant. The findings presented herein are relevant for replacement of precious metals in dye-sensitized solar cells and in luminescent devices by earth-abundant elements.

Abstract
Heterotopic ligands offer the possibility of preparing polynuclear bimetallic complexes. Recent studies of heteroditopic ligands and their metal complexes have focused on novel supramolecular systems, biological activity, and the development of MRI contrast agents. The heteroditopic ligand Bipy–CH2–O–CH2–C(pz)3(Bipy-L; Bipy is 2,2′-bipyridine and pz is pyrazolyl) reacts with AgBF4to produce the coordination polymercatena-poly[[silver(I)-(μ-5-{[tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methoxy]methyl-κ2N,N′}-2,2′-bipyridine-κ2N,N′)] diethyl ether hemisolvate], {[Ag(C22H20N8O)]BF4·0.5C4H10O}n, and with Re(CO)5Br to form the discrete compound bromidotricarbonyl(5-{[tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methoxy]methyl}-2,2′-bipyridine-κ2N,N′)rhenium(I), [ReBr(C22H20N8O)(CO)3]. The silver(I) compound is a one-dimensional coordination polymer, built up by a κ2coordination mode of the bipyridine group and a κ2–κ0coordination mode of the –C(pz)3donor set. In [ReBr(Bipy-L)(CO)3], the ligand coordinates onlyviathe bipyridine end, leaving the –C(pz)3donor set free for further coordination interactions.

Abstract
The organometallic and coordination chemistry of rhenium(i) has been largely restricted to bidentate α-diimine ligation and facial tricarbonyl coordination geometries. The thermal transformation of bidentate bis(imino)pyridine and bidentate terpyridine complexes at 200-240 °C under nitrogen led to a family of Re(i) pincer complexes [κ(3)-2,6-{ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]CMe}2(NC5H3)]Re(CO)2X (Ar[double bond, length as m-dash]C6H5, Me2C6H3, (i)Pr2C6H3; X = Cl, Br) and (κ(3)-terpy)Re(CO)2X (X = Cl, Br). The synthesis, single crystal X-ray structural and spectroscopic characterization of these eight species documents their Re coordination geometries and demonstrates the accessibility of such compounds. The basic photophysical features of these compounds show significant elaboration in both number and intensity of the d-π* transitions observed in the UV-vis spectra relative to the bidentate starting materials and these spectra were analyzed using time-dependent DFT computations.
