Abstract
A Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized by the self-assembly of the dicarboxylate ligand terephthalic acid (TPA), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-TPA) and N-donor auxiliary ligand 1,4-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)piperazine (bpmp) using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O under hydrothermal conditions. {[Zn(TPA)0.5(NH2TPA)0.5(bpmp)]·DMF·7H2O}n (framework 1) has an sra topology with a BET surface area of 756 m2 g-1. The microporous nature of the framework is apparent from the significant CO2 adsorption capacities observed at various temperatures: 57 cc g-1 at 283 K, 46 cc g-1 at 293 K, 37 cc g-1 at 303 K, and 30 cc g-1 at 313 K. The considerable CO2 adsorption may be caused by the existence of free carboxylate and amine substituents that interact with the gas molecules and micropores. At room temperature, the activated MOF readily converts CO2 into cyclic carbonates when a suspension of the MOF is bubbled with ambient air and different epoxides under solvent-free conditions. The amine groups located within the pores of the MOF interact with CO2 molecules, enhancing their sorption and conversion to cyclic carbonates. However, due to interpenetration within framework 1, only smaller size epoxides can be accommodated and converted to cyclic carbonates in good yields. Additionally, the effectiveness of the catalyst is further confirmed by the positive outcomes obtained from the hot filtration control test. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular simulations were utilized to gain a better understanding of molecular interactions. GCMC results are in line with the experiments. The substantial adsorption of CO2 can be ascribed to the strong intermolecular interactions that occur between the amine groups within the framework and the CO2 molecules.

Abstract
A family of seven silver(I)-perfluorocarboxylate-quinoxaline coordination polymers, [Ag4 (O2 CRF )4 (quin)4 ] 1-5 (RF =(CF2 )n-1 CF3 )4 , n=1 to 5); [Ag4 (O2 C(CF2 )2 CO2 )2 (quin)4 ] 6; [Ag4 (O2 CC6 F5 )4 (quin)4 ] 7 (quin=quinoxaline), denoted by composition as 4 : 4 : 4 phases, was synthesised from reaction of the corresponding silver(I) perfluorocarboxylate with excess quinoxaline. Compounds 1-7 adopt a common 2D layered structure in which 1D silver-perfluorcarboxylate chains are crosslinked by ditopic quinoxaline ligands. Solid-state reaction upon heating, involving loss of one equivalent of quinoxaline, yielding new crystalline 4 : 4 : 3 phases [Ag4 (O2 C(CF2 )n-1 CF3 )4 (quin)3 ]n (8-10, n=1 to 3), was followed in situ by PXRD and TGA studies. Crystal structures were confirmed by direct syntheses and structure determination. The solid-state reaction converting 4 : 4 : 4 to 4 : 4 : 3 phase materials involves cleavage and formation of Ag-N and Ag-O bonds to enable the structural rearrangement. One of the 4 : 4 : 3 phase coordination polymers (10) shows the remarkably high dielectric constant in the low electric field frequency range.

Abstract
Two new heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), LnZnTPO 1 and 2, and two homometallic MOFs, LnTPO 3 and 4 (Ln=Eu for 1 and 3, and Tb for 2 and 4; H3 TPO=tris(4-carboxyphenyl)phosphine oxide) were synthesized, and their structures and properties were analyzed. They were prepared by solvothermal reaction of the C3 -symmetric ligand H3 TPO with the corresponding metal ion(s) (a mixture of Ln3+ and Zn2+ for 1 and 2, and Ln3+ alone for 3 and 4). Single-crystal XRD (SXRD) analysis revealed that 1 and 3 are isostructural to 2 and 4, respectively. TGA showed that the framework is thermally stable up to about 400 °C for 1 and 2, and about 450 °C for 3 and 4. PXRD analysis showed their pore-structure distortions without noticeable framework-structure changes during drying processes. The shapes of gas sorption isotherms for 1 and 3 are almost identical to those for 2 and 4, respectively. Solvothermal immersion of 1 and 2 in Tb3+ and Eu3+ solutions resulted in the framework metal-ion exchange affording 4 and 3, respectively, as confirmed by photoluminescence (PL), PXRD, IR, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses.

Abstract
The amine-rich surfaces of pyrolyzed human solid waste (py-HSW) can be "primed" or "regenerated" with carbon dioxide (CO2) to enhance their adsorption of ammonia (NH3) for use as a soil amendment. To better understand the mechanism by which CO2 exposure facilitates NH3 adsorption to py-HSW, we artificially enriched a model sorbent, pyrolyzed, oxidized wood (py-ox wood) with amine functional groups through exposure to NH3. We then exposed these N-enriched materials to CO2 and then resorbed NH3. The high heat of CO2 adsorption (Q st) on py-HSW, 49 kJ mol-1, at low surface coverage, 0.4 mmol CO2 g-1, showed that the naturally occurring N compounds in py-HSW have a high affinity for CO2. The Q st of CO2 on py-ox wood also increased after exposure to NH3, reaching 50 kJ mol-1 at 0.7 mmol CO2 g-1, demonstrating that the incorporation of N-rich functional groups by NH3 adsorption is favorable for CO2 uptake. Adsorption kinetics of py-ox wood revealed continued, albeit diminishing NH3 uptake after each CO2 treatment, averaging 5.9 mmol NH3 g-1 for the first NH3 exposure event and 3.5 and 2.9 mmol NH3 g-1 for the second and third; the electrophilic character of CO2 serves as a Lewis acid, enhancing surface affinity for NH3 uptake. Furthermore, penetration of 15NH3 and 13CO2 measured by NanoSIMS reached over 7 μm deep into both materials, explaining the large NH3 capture. We expected similar NH3 uptake in py-HSW sorbed with CO2 and py-ox wood because both materials, py-HSW and py-ox wood sorbed with NH3, had similar N contents and similarly high CO2 uptake. Yet NH3 sorption in py-HSW was unexpectedly low, apparently from potassium (K) bicarbonate precipitation, reducing interactions between NH3 and sorbed CO2; 2-fold greater surface K in py-HSW was detected after exposure to CO2 and NH3 than before gas exposure. We show that amine-rich pyrolyzed waste materials have high CO2 affinity, which facilitates NH3 uptake. However, high ash contents as found in py-HSW hinder this mechanism.

Abstract
Two amino functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), {[Zn(Py2TTz)(2-NH2-BDC)]·(DMF)}n (1) and {[Cd(Py2TTz)(2-NH2-BDC)]·(DMF)·0.5(H2O)}n (2) (where Py2TTz = 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole, 2-NH2-BDC = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were synthesized and characterized using the primary ligand 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (2-NH2-H2BDC) and the auxiliary ligand 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (Py2TTz). They possess similar 2-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional bipillared-layer framework structures composed of typical binuclear metal nodes, 2-NH2-BDC two-dimensional layers and Py2TTz bipillars. Notably, thiazole nitrogen atoms and pendant -NH2 groups are present in channels in the two frameworks. Given their good chemical stabilities, high thermal stabilities, and exposed nitrogen sites, gas adsorption and catalytic experiments of the two MOFs were performed. The results demonstrate that MOF 2 can selectively adsorb carbon dioxide gas; moreover, the two MOFs can be employed as recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation reactions under solvent-free conditions.

Compounds 1 and 3 have 1D zigzag- and double-chain-type structures, respectively, whereas 2 features a dinuclear metallomacrocyclic complex. The ligand (L2-) orients in different conformations, that is, syn-syn for 1 and anti-anti for 2 and 3. Compound 1 is the first example in which the syn-syn conformation for this ligand has been observed. These compounds act as heterogeneous catalysts for the nitroaldol (Henry; in water medium) and Knoevenagel condensation reactions of different aldehydes, and the most effective is zinc coordination polymer 1. Recyclability, heterogeneity, and size-selectivity tests were performed, which showed that the catalyst was highly active over at least four recycling runs.

Abstract
Rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere resulting from fossil fuel combustion is one of the most significant global environmental concerns. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), primarily post-combustion CO2 capture, is an essential research area to reduce CO2 levels and avoid environmental destabilization. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been attracting attention in the scientific community for potential applications in gas storage and separation, including CCS, owing to their novel properties, such as a large surface area, tunable pore shape and size, and tailored chemical functionality. This chapter starts with a brief introduction about the significance of CO2 adsorption and separation, followed by how MOF-based research endeavors were initiated and explored, and why MOFs are unique for gas adsorption. Secondly, we reviewed the relationship between CO2 adsorption and MOF properties including surface area, pore size and volume, amine functionality, nature of linkers, and structural flexibility, and analyzed the reported data based on the possible adsorption mechanism. The humidity effects on CO2 capture over MOFs and implementation of MOF composites were considered as well. Finally, some conclusions on the status of the developed MOFs and perspectives for future research on MOFs for the practical application of CO2 adsorption and separation were mentioned.

Abstract
Shape-memory effects are quite well-studied in general, but there is only one reported example in the context of porous materials. We report the second example of a porous coordination network that exhibits a sorbate-induced shape-memory effect and the first in which multiple sorbates, N2, CO2 and CO promote this effect. The material, a new threefold interpenetrated pcu network, [Zn2(4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate)2(1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene)]n (X-pcu-3-Zn-3i), exhibits three distinct phases: the as-synthesized α phase; a denser-activated β phase; and a shape-memory γ phase, which is intermediate in density between the α and β phases. The γ phase is kinetically stable over multiple adsorption/desorption cycles and only reverts to the β phase when heated at >400 K under vacuum. The α phase can be regenerated by soaking the γ phase in N,N'-dimethylformamide. Single-crystal x-ray crystallography studies of all three phases provide insight into the shape-memory phenomenon by revealing the nature of interactions between interpenetrated networks. The β and γ phases were further investigated by in situ coincidence powder x-ray diffraction, and their sorption isotherms were replicated by density functional theory calculations. Analysis of the structural information concerning the three phases of X-pcu-3-Zn-3i enabled us to understand structure-function relationships and propose crystal engineering principles for the design of more examples of shape-memory porous materials.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, structure, and adsorption properties of two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Cu2(bpp)3(L1)]·(bpp)·(4H2O)} (1) and {[Cu2(bipy)2(L2)(H2O)2]·(bipy)·(5H2O)} (2) obtained from two different flexible tetracarboxylate linkers (L1 and L2) of variable lengths and flexibility. While 1 comprising CuII, L1, and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) is a 2D MOF with a cage-type structure, 2 consisting of CuII, L2, and 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) has a 3D twofold interpenetrated structure. Both frameworks manifest permanent porosity, as realized from CO2 adsorption at 195 K. 2 shows excellent CO2/N2 and C2H2/C2H4 adsorption selectivity at 298 K. This has been established by using 2 as a separating medium in a breakthrough column for separating mixtures of CO2/N2 (15:85, v/v) and C2H2/C2H4 (1:99, v/v). The selectivity of 2 toward CO2 over N2 and C2H2 over C2H4 is governed by favorable thermodynamic interactions owing to its structural flexibility, unsaturated metal sites, and polar carboxylate groups. Thus, 2 proves to be an extremely efficient material for specific gas separation.

Abstract
Solvothermal reaction in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) between 1,6-bis(1-imidazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne monohydrate (L1⋅H2 O), isophthalic acid (H2 L2), and Zn(NO3 )2 ⋅6 H2 O gives the diacetylene-based mixed-ligand coordination polymer {[Zn(L1)(L2)](DMF)2 }n (UMON-44) in 38 % yield. Combination of DSC with variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the occurrence of two phase transitions spanning the ranges 129-144 K and 158-188 K. Furthermore, the three structurally similar phases of UMON-44 show giant negative and/or colossal positive thermal expansions. These unusual phenomena exist without any change in the contents of the unit cell. DFT calculations using the PBE+D3 dispersion scheme were able to distinguish between these polymorphs by accurately reproducing their salient structural features, although corrections in the size of the unit cell turned out to be necessary for the high-temperature phase to account for its large thermal expansion. In addition, the infrared spectra (vibration frequencies and peak intensities) of these theoretical models were calculated, allowing for univocal identification of the corresponding polymorphs. Last, the limits of our computational method were tested by calculating the phase transition temperatures and their associated enthalpies, and the derived figures compare favorably with the values determined experimentally.

Abstract
Syntheses, structural characterizations, photoluminescence, and adsorption properties of three new azo-functionalized Cd(II)-MOFs, namely, {[Cd(azbpy)(msuc)]·2.5(H2O)}n (2), {[Cd(azbpy)(mglu)]·5(H2O)}n (3), and {[Cd1.5(azbpy)2(glu)]·(NO3)·MeOH}n (4) [where msuc2- = methylsuccinate; mglut2- = methylglutarate; glut2- = glutarate; azbpy = 4,4'-azobispyridine] have been reported. The compounds show different structures only with the variation of aliphatic dicarboxylates. The photoswitching behavior for the above-mentioned newly synthesized Cd(II)-MOFs along with one of our previously reported other azo-functionalized Cd(II)-MOF, namely, {[Cd(azbpy)(suc)]·2(H2O)}n (1), has been studied extensively. At photoilluminated condition, the conductivity values can draw a clear structure-property relationship among the structures of compounds 1-4. Single crystal structural analysis reveals that all the compounds exhibit a three-dimensional (3D) framework connected by azbpy linker and respective aliphatic dicarboxylate through their bis-chelating mono/bis oxo-bridging fashion. Compounds 1-3 exhibit an iso-structural honeycomb like 3D framework showing the same coordination environments, where the metal-carboxylate 2D sheets of compounds 1-3 are pillared by N,N'-donor azbpy linkers. On the other hand, compound 4 exhibits a 2-fold interpenetrated 3D framework with a little difference in its coordination environment and the pillaring of 1D metal-carboxylate ladder by azbpy linkers. All the compounds significantly demonstrate their enhanced sensitivity under light rather than the dark condition. The gas and solvent vapor sorption studies have been performed for the synthesized compounds 2-4. Moreover, compound 2 exhibits an enhanced type IV selective CO2 adsorption isotherm over N2 along with the appearance of gate opening phenomena in that.

Abstract
Three 3D Co(ii) metal-organic frameworks of the general formula [Co(DNNDC)(NN)]n were reported, where DNNDC = 1,5-dinitronaphthalene-3,7-dicarboxylate and NN = bridging or chelating dipyridyl ligands. The MOFs exhibit similar 3D [Co(DNNDC)]n frameworks in which double-carboxylate-bridged [Co(OCO)2]n chains are cross-linked by naphthalene backbones. The bridging dipyridyl ligands [4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)] serve as additional linkers between the chains to generate a reinforced framework with new net topology, while the chelating ligand 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) reinforces the frameworks through π-π stacking and C-HO interactions. Remarkably, varying the auxiliary ligand leads to a change in the sign of the magnetic exchange through the double carboxylate bridge: the MOFs with the ditopic bpy and bpe ligands show ferromagnetic interactions, while the one with the chelating phen ligand shows antiferromagnetic exchange. The difference in magnetic exchange is attributable to the subtle change in the coordination conformation of the carboxylate bridge.

Abstract
We design a flexible, amphiphilic LMWG consisting of donor and acceptor π-chromophores which self-assembles into a hydrogel and an organogel with different nano-morphologies. Different mechanisms of self-assembly evolve charge transfer (CT) emission in the hydrogel and LMWG-based emission in the organogel. Moreover, the hydrogel-nanostructure with surface exposed amide groups is explored for catalyzing Knoevenagel condensation reaction.

Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks with Six-Coordinated Ln(III) Ions and Free Functional Organic Sites for Adsorptions and Extensive Catalytic Activities. Sci Rep 2016; 6:29728. [PMID: 27431731 PMCID: PMC4949474 DOI: 10.1038/srep29728] [Citation(s) in RCA: 24] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/27/2016] [Accepted: 06/21/2016] [Indexed: 11/08/2022] Open
Abstract
Three chelating-amino-functionalized lanthanide metal-organic frameworks, Y-DDQ, Dy-DDQ and Eu-DDQ, were synthesized with a flexible dicarboxylate ligand based on quinoxaline (H2DDQ = N, N'-dibenzoic acid-2,3-diaminoquinoxaline). The three-dimensional framework is constructed by the H2DDQ linkers connecting the zigzag ladders, showing a net of sra topology. In the structures, one kind of Ln(III) ions metal centers are six-coordinated and thus can potentially behave as open metal sites (OMSs), while the free chelating amino groups can act as free functional organic sites (FOSs). The N2 and Ar adsorption behaviors indicate that these Ln-DDQ exhibits stable microporous frameworks with high surface area after remove of the solvents. Owing to presence of OMSs and FOSs, these MOFs show good ability of CO2, dyes captures and Lewis acid catalyst for cyanosilylation reaction. In view of the existing FOSs in the framework, Pd NPs were immobilized onto the MOFs through graft interactions between free chelating amino groups and metal ions precursor using postsynthetic modification. The well dispersed Pd@Ln-DDQs exhibit efficient and recyclable catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, and they can also act as an excellent catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions with the exposed Pd NPs.
