Abstract
One-for-all phototheranostics that allows the simultaneous implementations of multiple optical imaging and therapeutic modalities by utilizing a single component, is growing into a sparkling frontier in cancer treatment. Of particular interest is phototheranostic agent with emission in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window. Nevertheless, the practical uses of those conventional NIR-II agents are severely impeded by their unsatisfactory features including insufficient stability, low synthetic yield, to be extended absorption/ emission wavelengths, and inefficient phototheranostic outcomes. Developing exceptional phototheranostic agents is thus highly desirable yet remains formidably challenging. Herein, we synthesized two novel N-heteroacenes-based NIR-II luminogens, namely 2TT-PPT and 4TT-PBPT, by respectively employing pyrene-fused phenaziothiadiazoles and pyrene-fused bisphenaziothiadiazoles as acceptor skeletons. There is strength in numbers by increasing the fusing rings in N-heteroacenes moieties and numbers of appended donors. Compared to less ring-fused 2TT-PPT, the giant molecule 4TT-PBPT shows improved photophysical characteristics, such as enhanced light absorbance, red-shifted wavelengths, higher brightness, favorable reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and elevated photothermal conversion efficiency, which render 4TT-PBPT nanoparticles excellent fluorescence-photoacoustic-photothermal trimodal imaging guided photodynamic-photothermal synergistic therapy for orthotopic bladder cancer.

Abstract
One of the challenges for the realization of molecular electronics is the design of nanoscale molecular wires displaying long-range charge transport. Graphene nanoribbons are an attractive platform for the development of molecular wires with long-range conductance owing to their unique electrical properties. Despite their potential, the charge transport properties of single nanoribbons remain underexplored. Herein, we report a synthetic approach to prepare N-doped pyrene-pyrazinoquinoxaline molecular graphene nanoribbons terminated with diamino anchoring groups at each end. These terminal groups allow for the formation of stable molecular graphene nanoribbon junctions between two metal electrodes that were investigated by scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction measurements. The experimental and computational results provide evidence of long-range tunneling charge transport in these systems characterized by a shallow conductance length dependence and electron tunneling through >6 nm molecular backbone.

Abstract
Cyclopentannulation was explored as a strategy to access large, stable azaarenes. Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of previously reported di- and tetrabrominated cyclopentannulated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacenes furnished stable azaarenes with up to 13 six-membered rings in a row and a length of 3.1 nm. Their optoelectronic and semi-conducting properties as well as their aromaticity were investigated.

Abstract
This short critical review is devoted to the synthesis and functionalization of various types of azaacenes, organic semiconducting compounds which can be considered as promising materials for the fabrication of n-channel or ambipolar field effect transistors (FETs), components of active layers in light emitting diodes (LEDs), components of organic memory devices and others. Emphasis is put on the diversity of azaacenes preparation methods and the possibility of tuning their redox and spectroscopic properties by changing the C/N ratio, modifying the nitrogen atoms distribution mode, functionalization with electroaccepting or electrodonating groups and changing their molecular shape. Processability, structural features and degradation pathways of these compounds are also discussed. A unique feature of this review concerns the listed redox potentials of all discussed compounds which were normalized vs. Fc/Fc+. This required, in frequent cases, recalculation of the originally reported data in which these potentials were determined against different types of reference electrodes. The same applied to all reported electron affinities (EAs). EA values calculated using different methods were recalculated by applying the method of Sworakowski and co-workers (Org. Electron. 2016, 33, 300-310) to yield, for the first time, a set of normalized data, which could be directly compared.

Abstract
Organic compounds with selective near-infrared absorption and visible transparency are very desirable for fabrication of transparent/semitransparent optoelectronic devices. Herein, we develop a molecule with selective near-infrared absorption property, QBNA-O, in which four B←N units are incorporated to the core and two benzodioxin groups are introduced at the termini of the dibenzo-azaacene skeleton. QBNA-O exhibits a small optical gap of 1.39 eV due to the strong electron-donating benzodioxin groups and the strong electron-withdrawing B←N units. In toluene solution, QBNA-O shows a strong absorption peak at 856 nm with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of only 41 nm as well as very weak absorption in the visible range from 380 nm to 760 nm. Thin films of QBNA-O exhibit the average visible transparency (AVT) of 78 % at the thickness of 205 nm and 90 % at the thickness of 45 nm. Solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) of QBNA-O display ambipolar transporting behavior with the electron mobility of 0.52 cm2 V-1 s-1 and the hole mobility of 0.013 cm2 V-1 s-1 together with excellent air-stability. The selective NIR absorbing property and excellent charge transporting property imply that QBNA-O can be used to fabricate transparent organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Self-organization in mono- and bilayers on HOPG of two groups of benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridine derivatives, namely, 8,16-dialkoxybenzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridines with an increasing alkoxy substituent length and 8,16-bis(3- or 4- or 5-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridines, i.e., three positional isomers of the same benzoacridine, is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The layers were deposited from a solution of the adsorbate (in hexane or dichloromethane) and imaged ex situ at molecular resolution. In all cases, the resulting two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organization is governed by the interactions between large, fused heteroaromatic cores that form densely packed rows separated by areas covered by substituents. In 8,16-dialkoxybenzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridines, the alkoxy substituents, separating the rows of densely packed cores, are interdigitated. An increasing substituent length leads to an intuitively expected increase in this 2D unit cell parameter that corresponds to the orientation of the substituent in the monolayer. In the case of 8,16-bis(3- or 4- or 5-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridine positional isomers, the self-assembly processes are more complex. Although the determined 2D unit cell is in all cases essentially the same, the role of alkylthienylene substituents in layer formation is distinctly different. Thus, the formation of monolayers and bilayers is very sensitive to isomerism. 8,16-Bis(5-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridine is capable of forming the most stable monolayer and the most labile bilayer. In the case of 8,16-bis(3-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[h]benz[5,6]acridino[2,1,9,8-klmna]acridine, an inverse phenomenon is observed leading to the most labile monolayer and the most stable bilayer. These differences are rationalized in terms of dissimilar molecular geometries of the studied isomers and different interdigitation patterns in their 2D supramolecular structures.

Abstract
We synthesized new pyrene derivatives with strong bis(para-methoxyphenyl)amine donors at the 2,7-positions and n-azaacene acceptors at the K-region of pyrene. The compounds possess a strong intramolecular charge transfer, leading to unusual properties such as emission in the red to NIR region (700 nm), which has not been reported before for monomeric pyrenes. Detailed photophysical studies reveal very long intrinsic lifetimes of >100 ns for the new compounds, which is typical for 2,7-substituted pyrenes but not for K-region substituted pyrenes. The incorporation of strong donors and acceptors leads to very low reduction and oxidation potentials, and spectroelectrochemical studies show that the compounds are on the borderline between localized Robin-Day class-II and delocalized Robin-Day class-III species.

Abstract
A series of novel sulfur-containing bent N-heteroacenes were constructed and characterized by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. By introducing sulfur-containing groups (thio, sulfinyl, and sulfonyl) into bent azaacenes, their electronic delocalization was improved and frontier energy levels were modulated. The target products displayed tunable optical and electronic properties through altering the valence of sulfur and fused length of the azaacenes. For the first time, typical products were utilized as organic field effect transistor materials, affording promising results.

Abstract
Doping heteroatoms into the skeletons of parent acenes can provide more opportunities to construct novel thermally and photostable organic π-conjugated semiconductors. Herein, a family of diazole-decorated acenes (APyS and APySe) and azaacenes (PyP, PyTh, PyPy, PyPh, and PyAP) have been successfully synthesized through the classical reactions. Single-crystal X-ray analyses showed that these as-formed diazole-modified derivatives adopted a twisted topology configuration, whereas the azaacenes display reclining-chair architectures, besides a twisted structure. All these compounds displayed yellow or red light in solution. Moreover, their electrochemical behaviors were also examined. We also found that the azaacenes exhibited a positive spectroscopic response to acid.

Abstract
We disclose a novel strategy to design n-type acenes through the introduction of boron-nitrogen coordination bonds (B←N). We synthesized two azaacenes composed of two B←N units and six/eight linearly annelated rings. The B←N unit significantly perturbed the electronic structures of the azaacenes: Unique LUMOs delocalized over the entire acene skeletons and decreased aromaticity of the B←N-adjacent rings. Most importantly, these B←N-containing azaacenes exhibited low-lying LUMO energy levels and high electron affinities, thus leading to n-type character. The solution-processed organic field-effect transistor based on one such azaacene exhibited unipolar n-type characteristics with an electron mobility of 0.21 cm2 V-1 s-1 .

Abstract
Highly electron deficient 6,7-disubstituted (tert-butylsufanyl, 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy, diethylamino, 2-pyridyl, 2-thienyl, 2-furyl) pyrazino[2,3-[Formula: see text]]pyrazino-2,3-dicarbonitriles were prepared and attempted in cyclotetramerization to corresponding tetra(pyrazino[2,3-[Formula: see text]]pyrazino)porphyrazines (TPyzPyzPzs). Only the template reaction in pyridine with zinc acetate and only for the compounds substituted with tert-butylsulfanyl or 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy substituents resulted in efficient cyclotetramerization. Absorption spectra of these zinc TPyzPyzPzs indicated considerable blue shift of the main absorption Q-band ([Formula: see text] 693 nm and 669 nm in pyridine for tert-butylsulfanyl or 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy derivatives) when compared to other aza-analogs of naphthalocyanines. Photophysical parameters ([Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 0.25, [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 0.65) seemed to be unaffected by change of the macrocycle core and only slightly by different peripheral substituents in agreement with heavy-atom effect. Electrochemical data revealed strong electron-deficient character of hetaryl disubstituted pyrazino[2,3-[Formula: see text]]pyrazino-2,3-dicarbonitriles. The first reduction potentials of tert-butylsulfanyl or 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy substituted zinc TPyzPyzPzs were even more cathodically shifted when compared to their corresponding pyrazino[2,3-[Formula: see text]]pyrazino-2,3-dicarbonitriles. TPyzPyzPzs represent an example of the strongest electron-deficient core among the phthalocyanines, naphthalocyanines and their aza-analogs.

Abstract
Developing new organic conjugated materials for high density memory devices is highly desirable. In this research, a novel donor-acceptor-type twelve-ring fused twistheteroacene, 2,7,19,24-tetra-tert-butyl-13,30-didodecyl-9,17,26,34-tetraphenyl benzo[8',9']triphenyleno[2',3':7,8]dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxino[1,2,3,4-lmn]dibenzo[6',7':10',11']tetraceno[2',3':5,6][1,4]dioxino[2,3-f][3,8]phenanthroline-12,14,29,31(13H,30H)-tetraone (DPyN) has been synthesized and characterized. It displays high thermal stability, possesses a broad absorption band centered at 510 and 538 nm, and emits red fluorescence in organic solvents. A solution-processed memory device with DPyN as an active element shows an excellent memory performance with an ON/OFF current ratio of 103.46 :1 and a threshold voltage of -2.44 V.

Abstract
An approach for the synthesis of pyrene-fused acenes that allows the introduction of electron-withdrawing cyano groups in key positions that simultaneously (i) induce twists in the aromatic framework and (ii) stabilize the LUMO level is reported. This combination of steric and electronic features provide a twisted, stable, and n-type tetrabenzoheptacene as confirmed by a combination of theoretical calculations and optical, electrochemical, thermal, and electrical characterization.

Abstract
The efficiency of perovskite optoelectronic devices is increased by a novel method; its suitability for perovskite solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and optical amplifiers is demonstrated. The method is based on the introduction of organic additives during the anti-solvent step in the perovskite thin-film deposition process. Additives passivate grain boundaries reducing non-radiative recombination. The method can be easily extended to other additives.

Abstract
Four novel unsymmetrical heteroacenes containing five-membered heterocycles (OPyN, TPyN, TPyC, TPyO) have been synthesized and characterized. The formed molecules exhibited twisted structures, determined by crystal analysis and showed blue/green fluorescence in dichloromethane and in thin film. Compounds OPyN and TPyN were selectively used as active ingredients, and the fabricated devices displayed promising electroluminescent performance.

Abstract
We investigated the synthesis of one-dimensional nanostructures via Schiff base (imine) formation on three close-packed coinage metal (Au, Ag, and Cu) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We demonstrate the feasibility of forming pyrene-fused pyrazaacene-based oligomers on the Ag(111) surface by thermal annealing of tetraketone and tetraamine molecules, which were designed to afford cyclocondensation products. Direct visualization by scanning tunneling microscopy of reactants, intermediates, and products with submolecular resolution and the analysis of their statistical distribution in dependence of stoichiometry and annealing temperature together with the inspection of complementary X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy signatures provide unique insight in the reaction mechanism, its limitations, and the role of the supporting substrate. In contrast to the reaction on Ag(111), the reactants desorb from the Au(111) surface before reacting, whereas they decompose on the Cu(111) surface during the relevant thermal treatment.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a tetraazapentacenequinone fused to two thiadiazoles is reported. This linear derivative constituting seven fused rings shows a very low LUMO level (-4.46 eV) and a low HOMO-LUMO gap (1.77 eV). Its high solubility, endowed by four triisopropylsilyl groups, allows the fabrication of air-stable field-effect transistors by liquid deposition methods that show electron mobilities up to 2.42 × 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) without any device optimization.

Abstract
The nitrogen doping and phenyl substitution effects on the geometries, molecular stacking character, electronic, and charge transport properties of tetrabenzoheptacene (TTBH) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculation and incoherent charge hopping model. Our results indicate that the nitrogen doping (TTH) at the 6,8,15,17 positions improves its stability in air and the ability of electron injection and in the meantime slightly changes the molecular stacking due to the C-H···N interaction. For both TTBH and TTH, large hole transport mobility (μh) and electron transport mobility (μe), which are on the same order of magnitude, are given rise by their dense displaced π-stacking in crystal. Comparatively, the phenyl substitution (Ph-TTBH) at the 6,8,15,17 positions adopts a non-planar conformation, adverse to close packing and therefore leads to smaller electron/hole transport mobility (μ) than those of TTBH and TTH. The calculations suggest TTBH and TTH are promising candidates for excellent ambipolar OFET materials.
