Abstract
Steric properties of ligands are an important parameter for tuning the reactivity of the corresponding complexes. For various ligands used in mononuclear complexes, methods have been developed to quantify their steric bulk. In this work, we present an expansion of the buried volume and the G-parameter to quantify the steric properties of 1,8-napthyridine-based dinuclear complexes. Using this methodology, we explored the tunability of the steric properties associated with these ligands and complexes.

Abstract
A new Ru complex with the formula [Ru(bpn)(pic)2]Cl2 (where bpn is 2,2'-bi(1,10-phenanthroline) and pic stands for 4-picoline) (1Cl2) is synthesized to investigate the true nature of active species involved in the electrochemical and chemical water oxidation mediated by a class of N4 tetradentate equatorial ligands. Comprehensive electrochemical (by using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and controlled potential electrolysis), structural (X-ray diffraction analysis), spectroscopic (UV-vis, NMR, and resonance Raman), and kinetic studies are performed. 12+ undergoes a substitution reaction when it is chemically (by using NaIO4) or electrochemically oxidized to RuIII, in which picoline is replaced by an hydroxido ligand to produce [Ru(bpn)(pic)(OH)]2+ (22+). The former complex is in equilibrium with an oxo-bridged species {[Ru(bpn)(pic)]2(μ-O)}4+ (34+) which is the major form of the complex in the RuIII oxidation state. The dimer formation is the rate determining step of the overall oxidation process (kdimer = 1.35 M-1 s-1), which is in line with the electrochemical data at pH = 7 (kdimer = 1.4 M-1 s-1). 34+ can be reduced to [Ru(bpn)(pic)(OH2)]2+ (42+), showing a sort of square mechanism. All species generated in situ at pH 7 have been thoroughly characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis and electrochemical techniques. 12+ and 42+ are also characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Chemical oxidation of 12+ triggered by CeIV shows its capability to oxidize water to dioxygen.

Abstract
In this work, the aim is to characterize how an Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) behaves when gases, like carbon dioxide, are inserted through their channels and to characterize the nature and strength of those interactions. Despite the computational nature of the project, it is based on the experimental results obtained in 2016 by Mı́nguez-Espallargas and co-workers ( J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 15986 - 15989 ). Those MOFs were found to selectively allocate/adsorb CO2, having as a drawback that apparently each cavity allocates only one CO2 molecule. Despite truncating the MOF to its unitary cell, the whole cavity of the MOF can be described in detail by precise ab initio calculations. Another computational goal is to unravel why experimentally CO2 was preferred with respect to N2, and for the sake of consistency, a list of common gases will be further studied, such as H2, O2, H2O, CH4, C2H6, N2O, or NO.

Abstract
5-Aryl-substituted pyrazol-3-ylphosphonates have been conveniently synthesized by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of 1-formamidovinylphosphonates and aryldiazomethanes under K2CO3/MeOH conditions at room temperature. These pyrazoles are formed in one pot via spontaneous elimination of formamide. Basic conditions prevent competitive formation of cyclopropylphosphonates. 3-Aryl substituted pyrazol-5-carboxylates can be synthesized by the same methodology from 1-arylvinylphosphonates and ethyl diazoacetate, although a stronger base NaH is necessary to ensure the success of the aromatization stage with the elimination of the diethoxylphosphoryl moiety.

Abstract
Non-redox metal ions can affect the reactivity of active redox metal ions in versatile biological and heterogeneous oxidation processes; however, the intrinsic roles of these non-redox ions still remain elusive. This work demonstrates the first example of the use of non-redox metal ions as Lewis acids to sharply improve the catalytic oxygen atom transfer efficiency of a ruthenium complex bearing the classic 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. In the absence of Lewis acid, the oxidation of ruthenium(ii) complex by PhI(OAc)2 generates the Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O species, which is very sluggish for olefin epoxidation. When Ru(bpy)2Cl2 was tested as a catalyst alone, only 21.2% of cyclooctene was converted, and the yield of 1,2-epoxycyclooctane was only 6.7%. As evidenced by electronic absorption spectra and EPR studies, both the oxidation of Ru(ii) by PhI(OAc)2 and the reduction of Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O by olefin are kinetically slow. However, adding non-redox metal ions such as Al(iii) can sharply improve the oxygen transfer efficiency of the catalyst to 100% conversion with 89.9% yield of epoxide under identical conditions. Through various spectroscopic characterizations, an adduct of Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O with Al(iii), Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O/Al(iii), was proposed to serve as the active species for epoxidation, which in turn generated a Ru(iii)-O-Ru(iii) dimer as the reduced form. In particular, both the oxygen transfer from Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O/Al(iii) to olefin and the oxidation of Ru(iii)-O-Ru(iii) back to the active Ru(iv)[double bond, length as m-dash]O/Al(iii) species in the catalytic cycle can be remarkably accelerated by adding a non-redox metal, such as Al(iii). These results have important implications for the role played by non-redox metal ions in catalytic oxidation at redox metal centers as well as for the understanding of the redox mechanism of ruthenium catalysts in the oxygen atom transfer reaction.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been used to explore the potential of Ru-based complexes with 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene (SIMes) ligand backbone (A) being modified in silico by the insertion of a C60 molecule (B and C), as olefin metathesis catalysts. To this end, we investigated the olefin metathesis reaction catalyzed by complexes A, B, and C using ethylene as the substrate, focusing mainly on the thermodynamic stability of all possible reaction intermediates. Our results suggest that complex B bearing an electron-withdrawing N-heterocyclic carbene improves the performance of unannulated complex A. The efficiency of complex B is only surpassed by complex A when the backbone of the N-heterocyclic carbene of complex A is substituted by two amino groups. The particular performance of complexes B and C has to be attributed to electronic factors, that is, the electronic-donating capacity of modified SIMes ligand rather than steric effects, because the latter are predicted to be almost identical for complexes B and C when compared to those of A. Overall, this study indicates that such Ru-based complexes B and C might have the potential to be effective olefin metathesis catalysts.

Abstract
Bearing the versatility of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, here density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel the capacity of coordination of a deprotonated NHC ligand (pNHC) to generate a doubly C2,N3-bridged dinuclear complex. Here, in particular the discussion is based on the combination of the deprotonated 1-arylimidazol (aryl = mesityl (Mes)) with [M(cod)(μ-Cl)] (M = Ir, Rh) generated two geometrical isomers of complex [M(cod){µ-C3H2N2(Mes)-κC2,κN3}]2). The latter two isomers display conformations head-to-head (H-H) and head-to-tail (H-T) of CS and C2 symmetry, respectively. The isomerization from the H-H to the H-T conformation is feasible, whereas next substitutions of the cod ligand by CO first, and PMe3 later confirm the H-T coordination as the thermodynamically preferred. It is envisaged the exchange of the metal, from iridium to rhodium, confirming here the innocence of the nature of the metal for such arrangements of the bridging ligands.

The new compound has been tested with regard to its capacity to oxidize water and alkenes. The in situ generated bis-aqua complex, {[Ru(II)(bpy)(H2O)]2(μ-bimp)}(3+), 3(3+), is an excellent catalyst for the epoxidation of a wide range of alkenes. High turnover numbers (TN), up to 1900, and turnover frequencies (TOF), up to 73 min(-1), are achieved using PhIO as oxidant. Moreover, 3(3+) presents an outstanding stereospecificity for both cis and trans olefins toward the formation of their corresponding epoxides due to specific interactions transmitted by its ligand scaffold. A mechanistic analysis of the epoxidation process has been performed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to better understand the putative cooperative effects within this dinuclear catalyst.
