Abstract
[Pt(NCN)MeCN]+ (NCN = 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene, MeCN = acetonitrile) forms oligomers in the ground state due to metallophilic interactions, and a Pt-Pt bond is formed with photoexcitation. Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the [Pt(NCN)MeCN]+ dimer in acetonitrile is investigated by femtosecond time-resolved absorption (TA) and picosecond emission spectroscopy. The femtosecond TA signals exhibit 60 cm-1 oscillations arising from the Pt-Pt stretching motion in the S1 dimer. The excited-state absorption in the 500-700 nm region increases with time constants of 0.3, 1.4, and 9.4 ps, which are assigned to contraction of the Pt-Pt distance, structural change in the S1 dimer, and S1 → T1 intersystem crossing, respectively. The 1.4 ps structural change is attributed to torsional structural relaxation proceeding in the S1 dimer based on the computation, which indicates that a torsional angle around the Pt-Pt bond in the S0 dimer is widely distributed around two potential minima, whereas that of the S1 dimer has much narrower distributions around noticeably different torsional angles.

Abstract
Here, we report a photodynamic therapy (PDT) photosensitizer of N∧C∧N-coordinated Pt(II) complexes: [Pt(L)(solv)]+ (HL = 1,3-(2-dipyridyl)benzene) and [Pt(L)]+@HSA, which is the Pt(II) complex encapsulated in human serum albumin (HSA). The quantum yield of singlet oxygen production for [Pt(L)(solv)]+ is more than 50%, while that for [Pt(L)]+@HSA is much lower. Photoimages of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) treated with the Pt(II) complexes suggest that [Pt(L)(solv)]+ is delocalized in the entire cell after the fast uptake by diffusion and [Pt(L)]+@HSA is taken up by endocytosis and localized on organelles and the cell membrane. [Pt(L)(solv)]+ shows high photocytotoxicity for HUVECs, while [Pt(L)]+@HSA does not show photocytotoxicity.

Abstract
[Pt(NCN)MeCN]+ (NCN = 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene, MeCN = acetonitrile) forms oligomers, such as dimers and trimers, in solutions due to metallophilic interactions. The emission and absorption spectra in the visible region are considerably changed by the concentrations of the solutions because the excitation energy of the oligomers is dependent on the degree of oligomerization. In this study, excited-state dynamics of [Pt(NCN)MeCN]+ in acetonitrile were investigated by time-resolved emission spectroscopy in time regions from microseconds to nanoseconds at various concentrations. The time-resolved emission spectra recorded with 355 nm photoexcitation showed the decay of the blue-green emission and the rise of the red emission in the microsecond time region. Stern-Volmer analysis of the time-resolved data at various concentrations and wavelengths provides two bimolecular rate constants (4.1 × 109 and 8.2 × 108 M-1 s-1) for the formation processes of the excited-state T1 dimer and T1 trimer, respectively. Kinetic parameters, such as the intrinsic decay rate constants of the T1 monomer, T1 dimer, and T1 trimer, and the association and dissociation rate constants of the T1 dimer and T1 trimer were estimated by fitting the time-resolved emission data at various concentrations.

Abstract
The association of platinum(ii)-based luminophores, which is caused by metal⋯metal and π-π stacking interactions, has been actively exploited in supramolecular construction of photofunctional molecular materials. Herein, we describe a series of bimetallic complexes [{Pt(C^N^/*N)}2(CN)][BAr4F], containing cyanido-bridged cyclometalated Pt(ii) chromophore fragments (HC^N^N = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (benzyltriazolyl)-phenylpyridine, and pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine; HC^N*N = N-pentyl-6-phenyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridin-2-amine; ^/* denote five/six-membered metallocycles). These compounds are intensely phosphorescent at room temperature showing quantum yields up to 0.73 in solution and 0.62 in the solid state, which are generally higher than those of the mononuclear relatives [Pt(C^N^/*N)(CN)]. The complex cations bearing sterically unhindered -C^N^N ligands readily assemble in solution, reaching the tetrameric species [{Pt(C^N^N)}2(CN)]44+ as suggested by diffusion NMR spectroscopy. The size of the aggregates can be regulated by the concentration, temperature, and polarity of the solvent that allows to alter the emission from green to near-IR. In the solid state, the maximum of low-energy luminescence is shifted up to 912 nm. The results show that photophysical properties of discrete complexes and the intermolecular aggregation can be substantially enhanced by utilizing the rigid bimetallic units giving rise to novel dynamic light emitting Pt(ii) systems.

Abstract
We report an unprecedented result of self-aggregation of [Pt(L1 )Cl] (HL1 =1,3-di(5-carboxy-2-pyridyl)benzene) triggered by CO2 in basic aqueous solution. The color of basic aqueous solution containing [Pt(L1 )Cl] changes from yellow to blue-green during the aggregation resulted from a reaction with CO2 in air. Upon CO2 gas bubbling, strong and broad absorption bands of aggregate assigned to the metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition appeared at 701 and 1152 nm. Recrystallization of [Pt(L1 )Cl] from Na2 CO3 aqueous solution afforded polymorphic crystals of red and blue-green forms. A single X-ray crystallography revealed that the red form of crystal consists of a Pt-Pt stacked dimer bridged by CO3 2- ion and one of the carboxy groups of L1 is deprotonated. An elemental analysis provided evidence that the blue-green crystal is constructed by linear array consisting of the [Pt(L2 )(CO3 )]3- (HL2 =1,3-di(5-carboxylate-2-pyridyl)benzene) units. The formation process of blue-green aggregate in aqueous solution was monitored through a transient absorption spectrum, and the absorption of aggregates involved in the spectral change were examined by a global analysis. A singular value decomposition and kinetic analysis provide that there are four species resulted from the self-assembling reaction in the solution and the maximal degree of aggregation is at least 32-mer.

Abstract
There is a need to develop rapidly responsive chemical sensors for the detection of low concentrations of volatile organic solvents (VOCs). Platinum pincer complexes have shown promise as sensors because of their colours and vapochromic and solvatochromic properties, that may be related to the non-covalent interactions between the pincer complexes and the guest VOCs. Here we report an investigation into a series of Pt(II) complexes based on the 1,3-di(pyridine)benzene tridentate (N⁁C⁁N) skeleton with the formula [Pt(N⁁C(R)⁁N)(CN)] (R = C(O)Me 2, C(O)OEt 3, C(O)OPh 4) with the fourth coordination site occupied by a cyanide ligand. Solid-state samples of the complexes have been tested with a range of volatiles including methanol, ethanol, acetone, dichloromethane and water, and while 2 displays thermochromism, 3 and 4 display rapidly reversible vapochromism and solvatochromism. These results are correlated with X-ray powder and single crystal X-ray structural data including an assessment of the crystal packing and the void space in the crystalline space. The cyanide ligand and the R substituents are involved in hydrogen bonding that creates the voids within the structures and interact with the solvent molecules that influence the Pt⋯Pt separation in the crystalline state.

Abstract
A series of platinum(II) complexes bearing a chiral β-diketonato ligand and a cyclometalated ligand have been prepared. The platinum(II) complexes, (SP-4-3)-[Pt(ppy)(D-tac)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, D-tac = 3-trifluoroacetyl-(D)-camphor), (SP-4-4)-[Pt(ppy)(D-tac)], (SP-4-3)-[Pt(ppy)(D-pbc)] (D-pbc = 3-perfluorobutyryl-(D)-camphor), and (SP-4-4)-[Pt(ppy)(D-pbc)], and their enantiomers were isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, and X-ray structural analysis. Photoisomerization between SP-4-3 (trans) and SP-4-4 (cis) isomers was observed. Green emission due to the monomer was observed in diluted solutions for all complexes. Higher quantum yields and longer lifetimes of green emission were observed in nonpolar solvents compared to polar solvents. The two geometrical isomers had surprisingly different excimer formation efficiencies. For the trans isomers, orange emission due to the excimers was observed in nonpolar solvents at high concentrations, whereas negligible intensities of the excimer emission were observed for the cis isomers. The formation of the excimers was evaluated by emission decay and time-resolved emission spectra. For the trans isomers, the green emission due to the monomer showed negligible CPL signals, but the orange emission gave pronounced CPL signals. The dissymmetry factors, g-values, of the excimer CPL (glum = 0.002) were enhanced over those of the circular dichroism (gabs = 0.0002, glum/gabs = 10). The intensities of the emission and the CPL of the excimer under oxygen were very small, although those under an argon atmosphere were very strong. Therefore, the emission color of the trans-isomers was changed from green to orange by deoxygenation.

Abstract
Tf2 O mediated intermolecular / intramolecular [2+2+2] cycloaddition between alkynes and nitriles has been developed for efficient construction of polysubstituted pyrimidines and bicyclopyrimidines. In presence of Tf2 O, aza-allene species were generated in situ through nitrile activation and subsequently participated in the [2+2+2] cycloaddition, which was fully supported by deuteration experiments. The reaction had good substrate extensibility with moderate to excellent yield including trimethylsilylalkynes. The method was utilized as a synthetic tool in the preparation of a luminescent metal complex.

Abstract
Polymer electroluminescence devices producing circularly polarized luminescence (CP PLEDs) have valuable photonic applications. The fabrication of a CP PLED requires a polymer host that provides the appropriate chiral environment around the emitting dopant. However, chemical strategies for the design of chiral polymer hosts remain underdeveloped. We have developed new polymer hosts for CP PLED applications. These polymers were prepared through a free-radical polymerization of 3-vinylcarbazole with a chiral N-alkyl unit. This chiral unit forces the carbazole repeat units to form mutually helical half-sandwich conformers with preferred (P)-helical sense along the polymer main chain. Electronic circular dichroism measurements demonstrate the occurrence of chirality transfer from chiral monomers to achiral monomers during chain growth. The (P)-helical-sense-enriched polymer interacts diastereoselectively with an enantiomeric pair of new phosphorescent (R)- and (S)-dopants. The magnitude of the Kuhn dissymmetry factor (gabs) for the (P)-helically-enriched polymer film doped with the (R)-dopant was found to be one order of magnitude higher than that of the film doped with the (S)-dopant. Photoluminescence dissymmetry factors (gPL) of the order of 10−3 were recorded for the doped films, but the magnitude of diastereomeric enhancement decreased to that of gabs. The chiral polymer host permits faster energy transfer to the phosphorescent dopants than the achiral polymer host. Our photophysical and morphological investigations indicate that the acceleration in the chiral polymer host is due to its longer Förster radius and improved compatibility with the dopants. Finally, multilayer CP PLEDs were fabricated and evaluated. Devices based on the chiral polymer host with the (R)- and (S)-dopants exhibit electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL) of 1.09 × 10−4 and −1.02 × 10−4 at a wavelength of 540 nm, respectively. Although challenges remain in the development of polymer hosts for CP PLEDs, our research demonstrates that chiroptical performances can be amplified by using chiral polymer hosts. Polymer electroluminescence devices producing circularly polarized luminescence (CP PLEDs) have valuable photonic applications.![]()

Abstract
A cationic carbazole-bridged biscyclometalated diplatinum complex 4 has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates that complex 4 displays a dimeric structure with noncovalent π-π stacking and unique double Pt-Pt interactions. In aerated dilute CH3CN, complex 4 is characterized by a very weak monomeric yellow emission (λemi = 547 nm; Φ = 0.51%), which is attributed to the triplet intraligand (3LC) excited state mixing with some charge transfer characters. In contrast, under aerated conditions, the dispersion of 4 in a mixed solvent of CH3CN/Et2O (1/9, v/v) or CH3CN/H2O (1/9, v/v) displays intense yellow (λemi = 550 nm; Φ = 35.5%; τ = 11.10 μs) and red emission (λemi = 635 nm; Φ = 14.1%; τ = 7.00 μs), respectively. These aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission enhancements are considered being caused by the oxygen-shielding effect and the molecular rigidification-induced decrease of nonradiative decays in the aggregate state. The morphology and size of the aggregates under these two conditions are examined by scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering analysis. The absorption and emission properties of 4 are further rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory calculations on a model compound.

Abstract
Luminescent cyclometalated complexes [M(C^N^N)CN] (M=Pt, Pd; HC^N^N=pyridinyl- (M=Pt 1, Pd 5), benzyltriazolyl- (M=Pt 2), indazolyl- (M=Pt 3, Pd 6), pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine (M=Pt 4)) decorated with cyanide ligand, have been explored as nucleophilic building blocks for the construction of halogen-bonded (XB) adducts using IC6 F5 as an XB donor. The negative electrostatic potential of the CN group afforded CN⋅⋅⋅I noncovalent interactions for platinum complexes 1-3; the energies of XB contacts are comparable to those of metallophilic bonding according to QTAIM analysis. Embedding the chromophore units into XB adducts 1-3⋅⋅⋅IC6 F5 has little effect on the charge distribution, but strongly affects Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt bonding and π-stacking, which lead to excited states of MMLCT (metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer) origin. The energies of these states and the photoemissive properties of the crystalline materials are primarily determined by the degree of aggregation of the luminophores via metal-metal interactions. The adduct formation depends on the nature of the metal and the structure of the metalated ligand, the variation of which can yield dynamic XB-supported systems, exemplified by thermally regulated transition 3↔3⋅⋅⋅IC6 F5 .

Abstract
Molecules capable of producing zero-field circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are highly valuable for chiroptoelectronic applications that rely on triplet exciton. However, the paucity of tractable molecular design rules for obtaining CPP emission has inhibited full utilization. We report amplification of CPP by the formation of helical co-assemblies consisting of achiral square planar cycloplatinated complexes and small fractions of homochiral cycloplatinated complexes. The latter has a unique Pfeiffer effect during the formation of superhelical co-assemblies, enabling versatile chiroptical control. Large dissymmetry factors in electronic absorption (g abs, 0.020) and phosphorescence emission (g lum, 0.064) are observed from the co-assemblies. These values are two orders of magnitude improved relative to those of individual molecules. In addition, photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) also increase by a factor of ten. Our structural, photophysical, and quantum chemical investigations reveal that the chiroptical amplification is attributable to utilization of both the magnetically allowed electronic transition and asymmetric coupling of excitons. The strategy overcomes the trade-off between g lum and PLQY which has frequently been found for previous molecular emitters of circularly polarized luminescence. It is anticipated that our study will provide new insight into the future research for the exploitation of the full potential of CPP.

Abstract
Novel heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes consisting of 5'-benzoylated 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy) cyclometalated and acetylacetonate ancillary ligands were synthesized, and their photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. The 5'-benzoylated complex without any other substituents exhibited phosphorescence-based monomer emission at 479 nm in dichloromethane (10 μM, rt) with a PL quantum yield of 0.28. On the other hand, in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film, remarkable excimer emission additionally emerged at ca. 600 nm with a relatively high PL quantum yield of 0.47 as the doping level increased to 0.20 mmmol g-1, which was comparably intense in comparison with the monomer emission. In the case of the complexes with unsubstituted, 4'-benzoylated, and 5'-fluorinated ppy cyclometalated ligands, excimer emission was modestly generated at the same doping level, and thus the introduction of a benzoyl group to the 5'-position is effective to obtain remarkable excimer emission. The combination of benzoyl and fluoro groups was more effective at inducing excimer emission, and the intensity of excimer emission of the 2-(5-benzoyl-4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate-based complex was 3.5 times larger than that of monomer emission at a doping level of 0.20 mmmol g-1 in PMMA. From the analysis of PL lifetimes at varying concentrations, photokinetic profiles were fully analyzed according to the model system for the irreversible excimer formation, and the excimer formation rate constant of the 5'-benzoylated complex was determined in dichloromethane as 2.2 × 109 M-1 s-1, which is 4.4 times larger than that of the unsubstituted complex. We also fabricated an organic light-emitting diode using the 2-(5-benzoyl-4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate-based complex as a single emitter. The device exhibited pseudo-white EL with the Commission internationale de l'éclairage chromaticity coordinates of (0.42, 0.42).

Abstract
The bifunctional aminopyridine ligands H2 N-(CH2 )n -4-C5 H4 N (n=0, L1; 1, L2; 2, L3) have been utilized for the preparation of the rhenium complexes [Re(phen)(CO)3 (L1-L3)]+ (1-3; phen=phenanthroline). Complexes 2 and 3 with NH2 -coordinated L2 and L3, respectively, were coupled with cycloplatinated motifs {Pt(ppy)Cl} and {Pt(dpyb)}+ (ppy=2-phenylpyridine, dpyb=dipyridylbenzene) to give the bimetallic species [Re(phen)(CO)3 (μ-L2/L3)Pt(ppy)Cl]+ (4, 6) and [Re(phen)(CO)3 (μ-L2/L3)Pt(dpyb)]2+ (5, 7). In solution, complexes 4 and 6 show 3 MLCT {Re}-based emission at 298 K, which changes to the 3 IL(ppy) state at 77 K. The photophysical properties of compounds 5 and 7 display a pronounced concentration dependence, presumably due to the formation of bimolecular aggregates. Analysis of the spectroscopic data, combined with TD-DFT simulations, suggest that unconventional heteroleptic {Re(phen)}⋅⋅⋅{Pt(dpyb)} π-π stacking operates as the driving force for ground-state association. The latter, together with intra- and intermolecular energy-transfer processes, determines the appearance of multiple emission bands and results in nonlinear relaxation kinetics of the excited states.

Abstract
A family of cyanide-bridged heterometallic aggregates has been constructed of the chromophoric cycloplatinated metalloligands and coordinatively unsaturated d10 fragments {M(PPh3)n}. The tetranuclear complexes of general composition [Pt(C^N)(CN)2M(PPh3)2]2 [C^N = ppy, M = Cu (1), Ag (2); C^N = tolpy (Htolpy = 2-(4-tolyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (4), Ag (5); C^N = F2ppy (HF2ppy = 2-(4, 6-difluorophenyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (7), Ag (8)] demonstrate a squarelike arrangement of the molecular frameworks, which is achieved due to favorable coordination geometries of the bridging ligands and the metal ions. Variation of the amount of the ancillary phosphine (for M = Ag) afforded compounds [Pt(C^N)(CN)2Ag(PPh3)]2 (C^N = ppy, 3; C^N = tolpy, 6); for the latter one an alternative cluster topology, stabilized by the Pt-Ag metallophilic and η1-Cipso(C^N)-Ag bonding, was observed. The solid-state structures of all of the title species 1-8 were determined crystallographically. The complexes exhibit moderately strong room-temperature phosphorescence as crystalline powders (Φem = 16-34%, λem = 470-511 nm). The luminescence studies and time-dependent density functional theory computational analysis indicate that the photophysical behavior is dominated by the 3π-π* electronic transitions localized on the cyclometalated fragment and mixed with MPtLCT contribution, while the d10-phosphine motifs have a negligible contribution into the frontier orbitals and therefore show a little influence on the emission performance of the described compounds.
