Strong Fluorescent Smart Organogel as a Dual Sensing Material for Volatile Acid and Organic Amine Vapors

Textile-Based Adsorption Sensor via Mixed Solvent Dyeing with Aggregation-Induced Emission Dyes

This study demonstrates a novel methodology for developing a textile-based adsorption sensor via mixed solvent dyeing with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dyes on recycled fabrics. AIE dyes were incorporated into the fabrics using a mixed solvent dyeing method with a co-solvent mixture of H2O and organic solvents. This method imparted unique fluorescence properties to fabrics, altering fluorescence intensity or wavelength based on whether the AIE dye molecules were in an isolated or aggregated state on the fabrics. The precise control of the H2O fraction to organic solvent during dyeing was crucial for influencing fluorescence intensity and sensing characteristics. These dyed fabrics exhibited reactive thermochromic and vaporchromic properties, with changes in fluorescence intensity corresponding to variations in temperature and exposure to volatile organic solvents (VOCs). Their superior characteristics, including a repetitive fluorescence switching property and resistance to photo-bleaching, enhance their practicality across various applications. Consequently, the smart fabrics dyed with AIE dye not only find applications in clothing and fashion design but demonstrate versatility in various fields, extending to sensing temperature, humidity, and hazardous chemicals.

Aggregation induced emission and volatile acid vapour sensing in acridine appended poly (aryl ether) based low molecular weight organogelator

Considerable research attention has been devoted to the development of portable and rapid fluorescence sensors that can selectively detect volatile acids, due to the harmful effects of acid vapour on the environment and human health. Although various types of fluorophores have been reported for sensing volatile acid vapours, regulation of the sensory response using aggregation induced emissive (AIE) based gelators has rarely been reported. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel organogelator that is capable of sensing volatile acids through AIE. An acridine-attached poly(aryl ether) dendron molecular system is synthesized through an aldimine coupling reaction, which self-assembles and forms a gel, exhibiting AIE behavior. The synthesized molecule and prepared gel were characterized using NMR, MASS, XRD, HRSEM and rheology techniques. The AIE property of APD was investigated using steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopic techniques. The sensory response of the APD gelator was tested with various analytes, and the results indicated that APD shows rapid response, particularly to acid vapours, where the detection limits (DL) of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) vapor were as low as 0.22, 0.9 and 0.30 ppm, respectively. An APD solid film in filter paper shows a visual color change from yellow to red in an aqueous acidic medium, and the effect is reversed in an alkaline medium. These findings suggest that an APD gelator could potentially be utilized to generate a portable acid vapor sensor kit due to its low detection limit and rapid response time, and it could be also be used as a substitute for existing acid indicators.

Protonation induced redshift in the fluorescence of a pyridine derivative as a potential anti-counterfeiting agent

A simple pyridine-based compound, i.e. (2,4,6-tris(4-(hexyloxy)phenyl)pyridine), was synthesized and exhibited excellent solubility in various organic solvents owing to the presence of three 4-n-hexyloxy chains in its molecular structure. Further, we studied the effect of various solvents on its absorption and emission properties. We observed a greater extent of redshift in the chloroform solvent compared to the rest of the solvents. In fact, the observed redshift was attributed to protonation of the pyridine moiety by HCl (present due to the oxidative photo-decomposition of chloroform) in the solvent. Therefore, we also studied the acidochromic properties of the compound using acetic acid (AA), trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), and hydrochloric acid (HCl). We found that the compound sensed the HCl vapor much more efficiently than the TFA and AA vapours. Additionally, DFT analysis suggested a narrow theoretical bandgap for the protonated molecule when compared to the neutral molecule, explaining the redshift in the absorption and emission spectra of the protonated molecule. Furthermore, the compound exhibited a good level of aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in the THF-water system. In fact, compounds showing both AIEE and acidochromism are rarely reported in the literature. Finally, we employed it as an anti-counterfeiting agent based on its acid-base vapour sensing capability.

Force-, heat- and acid-induced fluorescent switching properties of an anthracene-based hydrazide derivative

A novel anthracene-based hydrazide derivative (3,4-ENS) was designed and synthesized, and 3,4-ENS can form stable organogel in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent. Firstly, 3,4-ENS xerogel from DMSO exhibits mechanofluorochromic property and its maximum emission shifts from 433 nm to 484 nm upon grinding. Secondly, DMSO xerogel exhibits thermofluorochromic behavior and its maximum emission shifts from 433 nm to 481 nm upon heating at 110 °C. Thirdly, DMSO xerogel exhibits acidofluorochromic behavior and its maximum emission shifts from 433 nm to 466 nm upon fuming by TFA vapors. The experimental results confirmed that the different luminescent property of 3,4-ENS attributed to the phase transition from well-ordered crystals to metastable disordered aggregation.

Metal Cation Triggered Peptide Hydrogels and Their Application in Food Freshness Monitoring and Dye Adsorption

Metal-ligand interactions have emerged as an important tool to trigger and modulate self-assembly, and to tune the properties of the final supramolecular materials. Herein, we report the metal-cation induced self-assembly of a pyrene-peptide conjugate to form hydrogels. The peptide has been rationally designed to favor the formation of β-sheet 1D assemblies and metal coordination through the Glu side chains. We studied in detail the self-assembly process in the presence of H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ and found that the morphology and mechanical properties of the hydrogels are ion-dependent. Moreover, thanks to the presence of the metal, new applications could be explored. Cu2+ metallogels could be used for amine sensing and meat freshness monitoring, while Zn2+ metallogels showed good selectivity for cationic dye adsorption and separation.

Synthesis of a Stable Benzoxazole Gel from an Imine Gel for Adsorption and Catalysis

Developing stable gel materials for adsorption and catalysis is one of the major themes of gel materials. However, it has been proven to be challenging to achieve them from small molecules. Herein, an imine gel is developed from tetra-aldehyde 4-{2,2-bis[(4-formylphenoxy)methyl]-3-(4-formylphenoxy)propoxy}benzaldehyde (A4) and 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine (B2) based on dynamic covalent chemistry. The unstable A4B2-imine gel is further converted into a stable aromatic benzoxazole-linked A4B2-benzoxazole gel via oxidative cyclization, which has significantly improved chemical stability under acidic and basic conditions. Benefiting from the stability under acidic conditions, the A4B2-benzoxazole gel is used for Pd(II) adsorption and the adsorption capacity is 250 mg g^-1. After PdCl₂ immersion and reduction, palladium nanoparticles with a size distribution of 1.3-14.7 nm are encapsulated by the network structure of the stable porous benzoxazole gel matrix. The Pd@A4B2-benzoxazole gel exhibits high catalytic activity toward the reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) (reaction rate constant = 0.0377 min^-1), while there is no significant decrease in the catalytic efficiency after five cycles.

Simple Development of Novel Reversible Colorimetric Thermometer Using Urea Organogel Embedded with Thermochromic Hydrazone Chromophore

Thermochromic urea (U) organogel immobilized with a thermochromic tricyanofuran hydrazone (TCFH) chromophore was developed. Thermochromic TCFH chromophore bearing two nitro functional groups on a hydrazone recognition unit was synthesized via an azo-coupling reaction of tricyanofuran (TCF) heterocyclic moiety containing an active methyl group with the diazonium chloride salt of 2,4-dinitroaniline comprising two strongly electron-withdrawing nitro groups. The molecular structure of both intermediates and TCFH dye were characterized by several analytical methods, including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, mass spectroscopy (MS), and elemental analysis. The thermochromic responsiveness could be attributed to the charge delocalization of TCFH as well as to the presence of an intramolecular charge transfer. The generated organogel displayed a thermoreversible sol–gel transition associated with color change. The origin of the monitored thermochromism is a conformational change of the tricyanofuran hydrazone backbone due to the temperature-driven deprotonation–protonation reversible process. The prepared urea–tricyanofuran hydrazone (UTCFH) thermometer acted as a diagnostic tool providing an instant color change between yellow, orange, red and purple upon changing the temperature of the UTCFH organogel in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This color change was proportionally correlated with increasing the temperature from 44 to 63 °C. The UTCFH organogel composed of urea and push-π-pull hydrazone type tricyanofuran chromophore immobilized physically in the urea organogel was found to function as a temperature-driven chromic thermometer. This chromogenic UTCFH organogel in DMSO displayed a phase transition at 41–48 °C. The morphological properties of the gel internal fibrous nanostructure (80–120 nm) were monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The colorimetric measurements were monitored by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The chromogenic thermometer demonstrated a good reversibility without fatigue. The mechanism accounting for thermochromism of UTCFH organogel is proposed.

Stimuli-responsive gelators from carbamoyl sugar derivatives and their responses to metal ions and tetrabutylammonium salts

Carbohydrate-based low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are interesting compounds with a variety of applications. In this research, a library of nineteen carbamate derivatives of N-acetyl-d-glucosamine were synthesized and characterized, and several derivatives were found to be effective LMWGs. They formed gels in pump oils as well as mixtures of water with ethanol or water with DMSO. The structures of the carbamoyl chains played an important role in the gelation properties, short chain aliphatic derivatives and phenyl carbamates formed gels in more solvents than certain aromatic and dimeric carbamates. The phenyl carbamate gelator was also selected for the encapsulation of naproxen sodium, and the drug slowly diffused from the gel to the aqueous phase as indicated by UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, we also found that the p-methoxyl benzyl carbamate derivative showed interesting stimuli-responsive gelation properties in the presence of metal salts and tetrabutylammonium salts. The gels were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, rheology and other methods. The self-assembling mechanisms of the gelators were studied using ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The preparation, characterization, and molecular assembling properties of these compounds are reported. The results obtained from this study are useful for the design of other LMWGs and the sugar derivatives can be explored for different biological applications. The formation of spontaneous ionic gels can be applicable for a plethora of applications including catalysis and environmental remediation.

A novel coumarin-derived acylhydrazone Schiff base gelator for synthesis of organogels and identification of Fe3

A novel coumarin-derived acylhydrazone Schiff base fluorescent organogel (G₁) was designed and synthesized. Gelator G₁ can form stable organogels in isopropanol, tert-amyl alcohol, n-butanol and phenylamine. The organogel could be converted to solution by heating and the solution could be restored to gel state by cooling. The self-assemble mechanism of G1 was investigated by XRD, FT-IR and SEM techniques. The results indicated the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, Van der Waals interaction and π-π stacking are the forces for the self-assembly of the gelator to form the organogel. The optical properties of the compound were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectra. Further study presented that gelator G1 could selectively and sensitively response to Fe³⁺ only among tested cations. Beside the above functions, the organic gel factor G1 could also response to irradiation, heating and shaking, thus endowing the organogel with multi stimulus responsive properties.

Cellulose-based fluorescent sensor for visual and versatile detection of amines and anions

It is practical and challenging to construct ultrasensitive and multi-responsive sensors for visual and real-time monitoring of the environment. Herein, a cellulose-based multi-responsive fluorescent sensor (Phen-MDI-CA) is fabricated, and realizes a visual and ultrasensitive detection of not only various amines but also three anions based on the change of the fluorescence and/or visible colors. Once exposure to various amines in both the solution and vapor state, the Phen-MDI-CA solution and test paper exhibit different fluorescence colors, which can be used to distinguish triethylamine, ethylenediamine, methylamine, aniline, hydrazine and pyrrolidine from other amines. Moreover, via combining the Phen-MDI-CA with the Phen-MDI-CA/malachite green ratiometric system, phosphate (PO₄^3-), carbonate (CO₃^2-) and borate (B₄O₇^2-) can be visually and accurately recognized depending on the change of the visible and fluorescence colors. In fluorescent mode, the LOD for B₄O₇^2-, PO₄^3- and CO₃^2- ions is as low as 0.18 nmol, 0.69 nmol and 0.86 nmol, respectively. Significantly, the Phen-MDI-CA can readily make a qualitative and quantitative detection of B₄O₇^2-, PO₄^3- and CO₃^2- anions in the mixture of anions. The state-of-the-art responsive behavior of Phen-MDI-CA originates from the amplification effect of cellulose polymer chain and the differentiated interactions between the sensor and analytes.

Multistimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Organogelator Based on Triphenylamine-Substituted Acylhydrazone Derivative

A new triphenylamine-based acylhydrazone derivative (TPAH-B8) was synthesized. TPAH-B8 could form organogels in cyclohexane through ultrasonic treatment. A typical gelation-induced fluorescence enhancement property was observed, which was attributed to the formation of J-aggregate in the gel state. More interestingly, TPAH-B8 exhibited multistimuli responsive behaviors. First, TPAH-B8 showed a solvatochromic effect, with the emission color changing from blue to cyan with the change in solvent from nonpolar cyclohexane to polar dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Second, TPAH-B8 showed a reversible mechanofluorochromism. The xerogel of TPAH-B8 emitted a blue fluorescence, while the fluorescence color changed to cyan after grinding. The cyan and blue colors could be repeated with the treatment of grinding and annealing, which was explored and ascribed to the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states. Third, TPAH-B8 revealed acidochromic property. The fluorescence color of TPAH-B8 in organogel and solid states could be switched by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)/triethylamine (TEA). This work not only demonstrated the multistimuli-responsive fluorescent properties of TPAH-B8 but also offered an easy way to develop new kinds of multistimuli-responsive fluorescent materials.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Active Donor-Acceptor Fluorophore as a Dual Sensor for Volatile Acids and Aromatic Amines

In the present work, a novel donor (D)-acceptor (A) fluorophore based on indeno-pyrrole derivative (PYROMe) has been utilized as a dual sensor for volatile acids and aromatic amines, where sensory responses were regulated by the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. The twisted structural framework of PYROMe, confirmed by crystal study, avoids closed cofacial encounter upon aggregation and aided with augmented rigidity via different noncovalent interactions that ultimately ensued restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR). Consequently, PYROMe exhibited AIE in THF/H₂O mixture along with bright solid-state emission. The accessibility of protonation at carbonyl site and feasible HOMO energy to accept electrons from aromatic amines during photoexcitation enabled PYROMe as a potential dual sensor. A thin film of PYROMe was utilized for the quantitative detection of volatile acids and aromatic amines, and the detection limit (DL) was found to be as low as 0.77 ppm and 6.04 ppb for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and aniline vapors, respectively. Beyond the established scopes of substituted indeno-pyrroles, the present study paves the way, for the first time, toward an AIE-driven dual-stimuli response in indeno-pyrrole based D-A fluorophores.

Multifunctional supramolecular self-assembly system for colorimetric detection of Hg2+, Fe3+, Cu2+ and continuous sensing of volatile acids and organic amine gases

A novel multifunctional gelator (1) based on an azobenzene derivative was designed and characterized. This compound could gelate some solvents including hexane, petroleum ether, DMSO, acetonitrile and ethanol through a heating-cooling procedure. The self-assembly process in different solvents was studied by means of UV-vis absorption and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), rheological measurements, X-ray powder diffraction and water contact angle experiments. Interestingly, compound 1 had a high-contrast colorimetric detection ability towards Hg2+, Cu2+, Fe3+ and volatile acids and further organic amine gases in solution through its color change. At the same time, organogel 1 in acetonitrile also exhibited detection performance through a color or gel state change. In the response process, the self-assembly structures were changed from a nanofiber into a microsphere under induction by analytes. More significantly, film 1 could continuously detect volatile acids and organic amine gases. The number of cycles of film 1 for the detection of volatile acids and organic amine gases was at least seven times. The limit of detection (LOD) of film 1 towards TFA was calculated to be 0.0848 ppb. The sensing mechanisms were studied using 1HNMR, FESEM, UV-vis absorption spectra and HRMS. The intramolecular cyclization occurred on molecule 1 and a H2S molecule was lost during the detection process of Hg2+. It was proposed that the -N[double bond, length as m-dash]N- bonding could be coordinated by Fe3+ and Cu2+ and this further induced the absorption spectra and color change. For a volatile acid, it was possible that the volatile acid was combined with the N,N-dimethyl amine group of molecule 1. This research opens up a novel pathway to the fabrication of supramolecular self-assembly gels to detect polymetallic ions and trace volatile acids in the environment.

Spatially Resolved Crosslinking of Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Esters for the Generation of Functional Surface-Attached Organogels

Chemistry, geometric shape and swelling behavior are the key parameters that determine any successful use of man-made polymeric networks (gels). While understanding of the swelling behavior of both water-swellable hydrogels and organogels that swell in organic solvents can be considered well-advanced with respect to fossil fuel-based polymer networks, the understanding, in particular, of wood-derived polymers in such a network architecture is still lacking. In this work, we focus on organogels derived from hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) ester. The latter polymer was functionalized with saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, respectively. Due to their tailored chemical constitution, we demonstrated that such polysaccharide can be crosslinked and simultaneously surface-bound by using a photo-induced radical reaction using a photo-initiator. Based on the choice of fatty acid used in the design of the HPC ester, and by controlling the degree of substitution (DS) obtained during the esterification of the polysaccharide, modular manipulation of the physical properties (e.g., polarity) of the resulting gel is possible. Depending on the initiator employed, different wavelengths of light, from UV to visible, can be utilized for the crosslinking reaction, which facilitates the deployment of a range of light sources and different lithographic methods. Additionally, we showed that altering of the illumination time allows to tailor the netpoint density, and thus, the degree of linear deformation in equilibrium and the swelling kinetics. Finally, we performed a proof-of-principle experiment to demonstrate the application of our material for the generation of spatially resolved polymer patches to enrich organic molecules from a solution within a microfluidic channel.

Sensitive and rapid detection of aliphatic amines in water using self-stabilized micelles of fluorescent block copolymers

A kind of self-stabilized micelles of fluorescent block copolymers are constructed for rapid and sensitive detection of aliphatic amines in water based on capture-report strategy. An amphiphilic triblock copolymer functionalized with aggregation induced emission (AIE) chromophores self assembles into micelles with core-shell structures in aqueous solution. Hydrophobic AIE chromophores organize into cores, where hydrophobic interaction among the AIE chromophores inhibits the micelles from disassembling. The cores of AIE chromophores are surrounded by a corona of water-soluble polymer segments, endowing the micelles with superior dispersibility in water. Water-soluble polymer segments capture organic amines in water due to preferential hydrophobic interactions between them. The enriched amines in the corona subsequently diffuse into hydrophobic cores of micelles, quenching fluorescence of the AIE chromophores. The fluorescent micelles allow rapid detection of aliphatic amines in the order of seconds at a concentration as low as 8 μg/L.

Multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular gels based on a D-π-A structural cyanostilbene derivative with aggregation induced emission properties

Developing multi-stimuli responsive fluorescent gel materials in a single system remains challenging. Gelator molecules with classical fluorophores suffer from the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, limiting their applications further. Herein, a novel V-shaped cyanostilbene-based molecule (BAPBIA) with aggregation induced emission (AIE) characteristics and great gelation ability was synthesized and was found to exhibit multi-stimuli responsive behaviors. Reversible gel-sol phase transitions together with emission quenching are realized in response to external stimuli including heat, light and fluoride ions. Especially, the introduction of a dimethylaniline group (donor) and a cyano group (acceptor) generates a D-π-A structure, further leading to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect, which enlarges the emission contrast with the variation of the distribution of charge. Thus, upon trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) triggered protonation of the dimethylaniline group, not only a gel-sol transition but also emission color switching (yellow-to-blue) is achieved due to the loss of the ICT effect. This work paves an easy way to construct fully reversible multi-stimuli responsive fluorescence modulation smart materials.

Ratiometric Indicator Based on Vibration-Induced Emission for in Situ and Real-Time Monitoring of Gelation Processes

Monitoring specific processes such as gelation in a ratiometric and visual manner is of scientific value and has practical implications but remains challenging. Herein, an innovative fluorescent low-molecular-weight gelator (DPAC-CHOL) capable of revealing and self-revealing the gelation processes in situ and in real time via the ratiometric fluorescence change from orange-red to blue has been developed. By virtue of its vibration-induced emission attribute, the gelation point, critical gelation concentration, and the internal stiffness of the gel networks of DPAC-CHOL and other gelation systems could be facilely evaluated in a ratiometric and naked-eye-observable fashion. Noteworthily, the DPAC-CHOL-doped gelation system Ph-CHOL can quantitatively identify the environmental temperature in a daily-concerned range (i.e., 20-55 °C). This work not only provides a versatile advanced material but also opens up a new avenue for the investigation of gelation systems.

Development of New D,L-Methionine-based Gelators

D,L-Methionine was chosen as a starting material for the preparation of a new gelator N-10-undecenoyl-D,L-methionylaminooctadecane (DL-Met-R₁₈). Three oligo (dimethylsiloxane)-containing gelators, DL-Met-R₁₈/Si₃, DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_7-8, and DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_14-15, were also prepared from DL-Met-R₁₈ by hydrosilylation reactions. Their gelation abilities were evaluated on the basis of the minimum gel concentration using nine solvents. Compound DL-Met-R₁₈ was able to gelate liquid paraffin and silicone oil, but it crystallized in most solvents. However, DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_7-8 resulted to be the best gelator, gelling eight solvents at low concentrations. The results of gelation tests demonstrated that the ability to form stable gels decreases in the following order: DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_7-8 ≈ DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_14-15 > DL-Met-R₁₈/Si₃ >> DL-Met-R₁₈. The aspects and thermal stabilities of the gels were investigated using three-component mixtures of solvents composed of hexadecyl 2-ethylhexanoate, liquid paraffin, and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (66 combinations). DL-Met-R₁₈/Si₃, DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_7-8, and DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_14-15 could form gels with all these mixed solvent combinations; particularly, DL-Met-R₁₈/Si_7-8 gave rise to transparent or translucent gels. FT-IR spectra suggested that the formation of hydrogen bonds between the NH and C=O groups of the amides is one of driving forces involved in the gelation process. Aggregates comprising three-dimensional networks were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the viscoelastic behavior of the gels was investigated by rheology measurements.

Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Sensor from Citric Acid and 1-(2-Aminoethyl)piperazine

Multiresponsive fluorescent supramolecular materials are quite interesting, for they combine the multiresponsiveness of supramolecules and the high sensitivity of fluorescent materials. Different from the multiresponsive supramolecular materials based on host-guest interactions, in this report, a supramolecular ionic network was fabricated by 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine and citric acids via ionic interactions. Despite the fact that there are no conventional chromophores, the obtained supramolecular ionic material can emit strong fluorescence. Most interestingly, the thin film of this supramolecular ionic material can change its fluorescent intensity in response to four external stimuli, including humidity, triethylamine, acetic acid, and temperature. Beneficial to the supramolecular ionic structure, this multiresponsive fluorescent sensor is self-healable. It is found that a new route has been opened to prepare the multiresponsive fluorescent sensors.

Hierarchical self-assembly of a fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator and its multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors

A discrete hexagonal metallacycle 1 decorated with tetraphenylethylene, amide groups and long hydrophobic alkyl chains was constructed via [3 + 3] coordination-driven self-assembly, from which the fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator with multiple stimuli-responsiveness was successfully prepared via hierarchical self-assembly.

Self-Assembled α-Cyanostilbenes for Advanced Functional Materials

In the specific context of condensed media, the significant and increasing recent interest in the α-cyanostilbene (CS) motif [ArCHC(CN)Ar] is relevant. These compounds have shown remarkable optical features in addition to interesting electrical properties, and hence they are recognized as very suitable and versatile options for the development of functional materials. This progress report is focused on current and future use of CS structures and molecular assemblies with the aim of exploring and developing for the next generations of functional materials. A critical selection of illustrative materials that contain the CS motif, including relevant subfamilies such as the dicyanodistyrylbenzene and 2,3,3-triphenylacrylonitrile shows how, driven by the self-assembly of CS blocks, a variety of properties, effects, and possibilities for practical applications can be offered to the scientific community, through different rational routes for the elaboration of advanced materials. A survey is provided on the research efforts directed toward promoting the self-assembly of the solid state (polycrystalline solids, thin films, and single crystals), liquid crystals, nanostructures, and gels with multistimuli responsiveness, and applications for sensors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic field effect transistors, organic lasers, solar cells, or bioimaging purposes.

Functionality-Oriented Derivatization of Naphthalene Diimide: A Molecular Gel Strategy-Based Fluorescent Film for Aniline Vapor Detection

Modification of naphthalene diimide (NDI) resulted in a photochemically stable, fluorescent 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)benzamide derivative of NDI (TDBNDI), and introduction of the long alkyl chains endowed the compound with good compatibility with commonly found organic solvents and in particular superior self-assembly in the solution state. Further studies revealed that TDBNDI forms gels with nine of the 18 solvents tested at a concentration of 2.0% (w/v), and the critical gelation concentrations of five of the eight gels are lower than 1.0% (w/v), indicating the high efficiency of the compound as a low-molecular mass gelator (LMMG). Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy studies revealed the networked fibrillar structure of the TDBNDI/methylcyclohexane (MCH) gel. On the basis of these findings, a fluorescent film was developed via simple spin-coating of the TDBNDI/MCH gel on a glass substrate surface. Fluorescence behavior and sensing performance studies demonstrated that this film is photochemically stable, and sensitive and selective to the presence of aniline vapor. Notably, the response is instantaneous, and the sensing process is fully and quickly reversible. This case study demonstrates that derivatization of photochemically stable fluorophores into LMMGs is a good strategy for developing high-performance fluorescent sensing films.
