Abstract
Low-molecular-weight peptide gelators are a versatile class of compounds able to form gels under a variety of conditions, even via simple ultrasound sonication. In this paper, the ability of Boc-L-Phe-D-Oxd-L-Phe-OBn to gelate three organic solvents (toluene, tert-butyl methyl ether, and ethanol) was evaluated. The rheological behaviour of the materials was assessed via strain sweep analysis, while the fibrous network was analysed via optical microscopy on the wet gels. The gel obtained from toluene is a highly transparent material, and the one from ethanol appears translucent, while the one from tert-butyl methyl ether is opaque. These gels were used to study the reversible light-induced transformation from spyropiran (SP) to merocyanine (MC) and back, as a model system to check the effect of the gel medium onto the rection kinetic. We observed that the solvent used to form the organogels has a crucial effect on the reaction, as gels from aprotic solvents stabilize the SP form, while the ones from protic solvents stabilize the MC form. We thus obtained a solid support to stabilize the two photochromic species just by changing the solvent polarity. Moreover, we could demonstrate that the self-assembled gels do not interfere with the light-driven conversion process, either starting from SP or MC, thus representing a valid and economical photochromic material.

Abstract
Supramolecular gels, as a fascinating and useful class of soft materials, constructed from low-molecular-weight gelators via noncovalent interactions have attracted increasing attention in the past few decades. Dendrimers and dendrons are highly branched and monodisperse macromolecules with a well-defined three-dimensional architecture and multiple surface functionalities. In recent years, poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers and dendrons are found to be powerful candidates for constructing gel phase materials in organic or aqueous media due to the advantages of capability of forming multiple noncovalent interactions and significant steric impact. In this Feature Article, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in supramolecular gels involving poly(benzyl ether) dendritic molecules. Firstly, we outline the molecular design strategies of dendritic gelators with an emphasis on the discussion of their gelating units and position in molecular structures. Subsequently, we discuss the potential applications of dendritic gels in light harvesting, stimuli responsive materials, sensors and environmental remediation. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives of poly(benzyl ether) dendritic gels have also been discussed. It is hoped that this feature article will attract increasing attention and provide some valuable insights for the future design and evolution of supramolecular gels.

Abstract
Functional supramolecular gel materials have potential applications in sensors, optical switches, artificial antennae, drug delivery and so on. In this paper, quinoline-cored poly(aryl ether) dendritic organogelators were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The gelation behaviour of the dendritic organogelator was tested in organic solvents, mixed solvents and ionic liquids. The dendron Q-G1 was found to be an efficient and versatile organogelator toward various apolar and polar organic solvents with the critical gelation concentrations (CGCs) approaching 1.2×10-2 mol/L, indicating one dendritic organogelator could immobilize 1.2×103 solvent molecules in the organogel network. Interestingly, these dendrons exhibited excellent gel formation in ionic liquids. Notably, these dendritic organogels were found to display multiple stimuli-responsive properties toward external stimuli including heat, ultrasound and shear stress, with a reversible sol-gel phase transition. In addition, the dendritic organogel could effectively adsorb heavy metals and organic dyes. The removal rate of Pb2+ was up to 20% and the adsorption rate for Rhodamine B was as high as 89%.

Regulating the Structures of Self-Assembled Mechanically Interlocked Moleculecular Constructs via Dianion Precursor Substituent Effects. J Am Chem Soc 2020; 142:7443-7455. Abstract
Substituent effects play critical roles in both modulating reaction chemistry and supramolecular self-assembly processes. Using substituted terephthalate dianions (p-phthalic acid dianions; PTADAs), the effect of varying the type, number, and position of the substituents was explored in terms of their ability to regulate the inherent anion complexation features of a tetracationic macrocycle, cyclo[2](2,6-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine)[2](1,4-dimethylenebenzene) (referred to as the Texas-sized molecular box; 14+), in the form of its tetrakis-PF6- salt in DMSO. Several of the tested substituents, including 2-OH, 2,5-di(OH), 2,5-di(NH2), 2,5-di(Me), 2,5-di(Cl), 2,5-di(Br), and 2,5-di(I), were found to promote pseudorotaxane formation in contrast to what was seen for the parent PTADA system. Other derivatives of PTADA, including those with 2,3-di(OH), 2,6-di(OH), 2,5-di(OMe), 2,3,5,6-tetra(Cl), and 2,3,5,6-tetra(F) substituents, led only to so-called outside binding, where the anion interacts with 14+ on the outside of the macrocyclic cavity. The differing binding modes produced by the choice of PTADA derivative were found to regulate further supramolecular self-assembly when the reaction components included additional metal cations (M). Depending on the specific choice of PTADA derivatives and metal cations (M = Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Gd3+, Nd3+, Eu3+, Sm3+, Tb3+), constructs involving one-dimensional polyrotaxanes, outside-type rotaxanated supramolecular organic frameworks (RSOFs), or two-dimensional metal-organic rotaxane frameworks (MORFs) could be stabilized. The presence and nature of the substituent were found to dictate which specific higher order self-assembled structure was obtained using a given cation. In the specific case of the 2,5-di(OH), 2,5-di(Cl), and 2,5-di(Br) PTADA derivatives and Eu3+, so-called MORFs with distinct fluorescence emission properties could be produced. The present work serves to illustrate how small changes in guest substitution patterns may be used to control structure well beyond the first interaction sphere.

Abstract
Formation of supramolecular ionic liquid (IL) gels (ionogels) induced by low-molecular-mass gelators (LMMGs) is an efficient strategy to confine ILs, and the negligible influence of LMMGs on the electrochemical properties of ILs makes ionogels ideal quasisolid electrochemical materials. Furthermore, the stimuli-responsive and self-healing characters of the supramolecular gel can be utilized for the potential development of smart electrochemical materials. However, the poor mechanical properties of supramolecular ionogels reported so far limit their practical applications. Herein, we investigated a series of efficient d-gluconic acetal-based gelators (Gn, PG16, and B8) that can harden a wide variety of ILs at low concentrations. It was shown that both alkyl chain length and the number of hydrogen bonding sites of a certain gelator, as well as the nature of the IL anion, significantly influenced the gelation abilities. The resulting ionogels were thermally reversible, and most of them were stable at room temperature. Interestingly, a PG16-based supramolecular ionogel showed rapid self-healing properties upon mechanical damage. Furthermore, the PG16-based ionogel demonstrated unprecedented performances including the favorable ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, and enhanced viscoelasticity, which make it a great self-healing electrochemical material. The ionogel formation mechanism was proposed based on the analysis of Fourier transform infrared, 1HNMR, and X-ray diffraction, indicating that a combination of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and interactions between alkyl chains was responsible for the self-assembly of gelators in ILs. Overall, our present studies on exploring the structure-property relationship of gelators for the formation of practically useful supramolecular ionogels shed light for future development of more functionalized ionogels.

Abstract
Aromatic groups are introduced into the end peripherals of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core-based organic/inorganic hybrid supramolecules to get a novel dendrimer gelator POSS-Z-Asp(OBzl) (POSS-ASP), which have eight aspartate derivative arms to make full use of strong π-π stacking forces to get strong supramolecular gels in addition to multiple hydrogen bindings and van der Waals interactions. POSS-ASP can self-assemble into three-dimensional nanoscale gel networks to provide hybrid physical gels especially with strong mechanical properties and fast-recovery behaviors. Two totally different morphologies of the connected spherical particle structures and banded ultralong fibers are observed owing to the polarity of solvents confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques, expecting the existing various self-assembly models and illustrating the peripherals of the dendrimer and the polarity of solvents having huge influences in the supramolecular self-assembly mechanism. What is more, the thermal stability, rheological properties, and network architecture information have also been investigated via tube-inversion, rotational rheometer, and powder X-ray diffraction methods, the results of which confirm the two different gel formation mechanisms that make POSS-ASP to exhibit two totally different thermal and mechanical properties. Such a study reports a new gelation system in organic or organic/aqueous mixed solvents, which can be helpful for investigating the relationship of dendritic supramolecular gelation and different polarity solvents during the supramolecular self-assembly process of gelators.

Abstract
Phenylalanine is an important amino acid both biologically, essential to human health, and industrially, as a building block of artificial sweeteners. Our interest in this particular amino acid and its derivatives lies with its ability to form gels in a number of solvents. We present here the studies of the influence of halogen addition to the aromatic ring on the gelation properties and we analyse the crystal structures of a number of these materials to elucidate the trends in their behaviour based on the halogen addition to the aromatic group and the interactions that result.

Abstract
Alteration of native gelation properties of anthracene and pyrene cored first generation poly(aryl ether) dendrons, G1-An and G1-Py, by introducing a common acceptor, 2,4,7-trinitro-9H-fluoren-9-one (TNF), results in forming charge transfer gels in long chain alcoholic solvents. This strategy leads to significant perturbation of optical and electronic properties within the gel matrix. Consequently, a noticeable increase of their electrical conductivities is observed, making these poly(aryl ether) dendron based gels potential candidates for organic electronics. While the dc-conductivity (σ) value for the native gel from G1-An is 2.8 × 10-4 S m-1, the value increased 3 times (σ = 8.7 × 10-4 S m-1) for its corresponding charge transfer gel. Further, the dc-conductivity for the native gel self-assembled from G1-Py dramatically enhanced by approximately an order of magnitude from 4.9 × 10-4 to 1.3 × 10-3 S m-1, under the influence of an acceptor. Apart from H-bonding and π···π interactions, charge transfer results in the formation of a robust 3D network of fibers, with improved aspect ratio, providing high thermo-mechanical stability to the gels compared to the native ones. The charge transfer gels self-assembled from G1-An/TNF (1:1) and G1-Py/TNF exhibit a 7.3- and 2.5-fold increase in their yield stress, respectively, compared to their native assemblies. A similar trend follows in the case of their thermal stabilities. This is attributed to the typical bilayer self-assembly of the former which is not present in the case of G1-Py/TNF charge transfer gel. Density functional calculations provide deeper insights accounting for the role of charge transfer interactions in the mode of self-assembly. The 1D potential energy surface for the G1-An/TNF dimer and G1-Py/TNF dimer is found to be 11.8 and 1.9 kcal mol-1 more stable than their corresponding native gel dimers, G1-An/G1-An and G1-Py/G1-Py, respectively.

Abstract
The C-H/π interactions as the key driving force for the construction of supramolecular gels remain a great challenge because of their weak nature. We hereby employed for the first time weak C-H/π interactions for the construction of supramolecular dendritic gels based on peripherally methyl-functionalized poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers. Their gelation property is highly dependent on the nature of the peripheral methyl groups. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy revealed that multiple C-H/π interactions between the proton of the methyl group and the electron-rich peripheral methyl-substituted aryl ring played significant roles in the formation of supramolecular nanofibers and organogels. This study uncovers the critical role of weak noncovalent interactions and provides new insights into the further design of self-assembled nanomaterials.
