Abstract
The reaction of [Cp‡Ru(μ-H)4RuCp‡] (1: Cp‡ = 1,2,4-tri-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl) with cyclic amines at 180 °C afforded a μ-η4-α-diimine complex, [(Cp‡Ru)2(μ-η4-C2nH4n-4N2)] (5a-c: n = 4, 5, 6), via dehydrogenative coupling of two cyclic amine molecules. An intermediate μ-η2-1-pyrroline complex, [{Cp‡Ru(μ-H)}2(μ-η2-C4H7N)] (2a), was synthesized by the photoreaction of 1 with pyrrolidine and 5a was shown to be formed via the disproportionation of 2a upon thermolysis yielding 1 and a μ-imidoyl complex, [(Cp‡Ru)2(μ-η2:η2-C4H6N)(μ-H)] (3a). Complex 3a was transformed into 5avia the incorporation of 1-pyrroline, which was formed by the reaction of 2a with H2. DFT calculations on the model complexes supported by C5H5 groups at the B3LYP level suggested that the μ-η4-α-diimine ligand is formed via the insertion of a terminal cyclic aminocarbene ligand into the Ru-C bond of the μ-imidoyl group followed by the elimination of hydrogen. Although 5a was inert under an Ar atmosphere, it catalyzed the dehydrogenative oxidation of pyrrolidine under an atmosphere of hydrogen to yield γ-butyrolactam. An active species possessing a terminal cyclic aminocarbene ligand was generated via the heterolytic activation of hydrogen at the Ru-N bond followed by C-C bond cleavage.

Abstract
A series of hafnium complexes with a reduced arene of the general formula [K(L)][Hf(Xy-N3 N)(arene)] (Xy-N3 N={(3,5-Me2 C6 H3 )NCH2 CH2 }3 N3- , L=THF, 18-crown-6; arene=C10 H8 2- , C14 H10 2- ) mimic the chemistry of hafnium in its formal oxidation state +II. All compounds were obtained upon reduction of the chlorido complex [HfCl(Xy-N3 N)(thf)] with two equivalents of potassium naphthalenide or anthracenide. The reducing nature and the basicity of the reduced anthracene ligand were explored in the reaction of benzonitrile and azobenzene, and by deprotonation of tert-butylacetylene, respectively. The reduction of benzonitrile provides an initial double nitrile insertion product under kinetic control that rearranges after extrusion of one of the inserted nitriles to a hafnium imido complex as the thermodynamic product. The reduction of azobenzene resulted in a diphenylhydrazido(2-) complex. Treatment of terminal alkynes with the anthracene or diphenylhydrazido(2-) complex led to the selective protonation of the corresponding dianionic ligand.

Abstract
The preparation and reactivity of a range of novel paramagnetic chromium(II) complexes supported by a carbazole-based PNP pincer ligand is reported. Deprotonation of the ligand precursors R(PNP)H (1R) and subsequent reaction with chromium(II) chloride led to the formation of square-planar chlorido complexes R(PNP)CrCl (2R). Further reaction with various alkylating agents resulted in the isolation of chromium alkyl complexes R(PNP)CrR' (3R-R') which were then hydrogenated to yield two rare examples of paramagnetic chromium(II) hydrides 4iPr and 4tBu. Both compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction and paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy supported by a comprehensive DFT-supported assignment of the resonances. While the di(tert-butyl)phosphino PNP substituted complex 4tBu was found to exhibit a monomeric square-planar molecular structure, its isopropyl-substituted analog 4iPr forms a dimer, also indicated by a strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the chromium centers. The pronounced reactivity of these compounds toward C═X double bonds was demonstrated by reaction with benzophenone, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and carbon dioxide, which gave the corresponding insertion products. The alkoxido complex 5iPr, the amidinato complex 6iPr, and the formato compound 7tBu were also characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The reactions of the diruthenium tetrahydrido complex, Cp*Ru(μ-H)4RuCp* (1) (Cp* = η5-C5Me5), with pyridines were investigated in relation to the dehydrogenative coupling of 4-substituted pyridines. Complex 1 reacted with γ-picoline to yield the bis(μ-pyridyl) complex, {Cp*Ru(μ-H)(μ-4-MeC5H3)}2 (2a), with the elimination of dihydrogen. Complex 2a immediately reacted with the liberated dihydrogen to yield μ-η2-dihydrobipyridine (dhbpy) complex 4avia C-C bond formation between the two pyridyl groups, in which one of the pyridine rings underwent partial hydrogenation. The X-ray structure of 4a shows that the dhbpy moiety adopts a μ-η2 coordination mode at the Ru2 site. Complex 4a was reversibly converted to 5avia the elimination of dihydrogen in which the dhbpy moiety adopts a μ-η2:η2 mode. Although 5a was coordinatively saturated, 5a readily reacted with tBuNC to yield 6a. This was owing to the ability of the dhbpy ligand changing its coordination mode between the μ-η2:η2 and μ-η2 modes. This also causes the dehydrogenation from the dhbpy ligand to yield μ-η2:η2-bipyridine complex 7a at 140 °C. However, 7a was not shown to be an intermediate of the catalysis. The reaction of 1 with 1,10-phenanthroline afforded μ-η2-phenanthroline complex 8 containing two hydrides, which can be a model compound for the bipyridine elimination from the Ru2 site. Dynamic NMR studies suggested that 8 was isomerised to an unsaturated μ-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex. The unsaturated nature of the μ-NHC complex is likely responsible for the uptake of the third pyridine molecule to turn over the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Low-valent early transition metals are often intrinsically highly reactive as a result of their strong propensity toward oxidation to more stable high-valent states. Harnessing these highly reducing complexes for productive reactivity is potentially powerful for C-C bond construction, organic reductions, small-molecule activation and many other reactions that offer orthogonal chemoselectivity and/or regioselectivity patterns to processes promoted by late transition metals. Recent years have seen many exciting new applications of low-valent metals through building new catalytic and/or multicomponent reaction manifolds out of classical reactivity patterns. In this Review, we survey new methods that employ early transition metals and invoke low-valent precursors or intermediates in order to identify common themes and strategies in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and reactivity of Zr complexes supported by a 9,10-anthracenediyl-linked bisphenoxide ligand, L. ZrIVLBn2 (1) undergoes facile photolytic reduction with concomitant formation of bibenzyl and ZrIVL(THF)3 (2), which displays a two-electron reduced anthracene moiety. Leveraging ligand-stored reducing equivalents, 2 promotes the oxidative coupling of internal and terminal alkynes to isolable zirconacyclopentadiene complexes, demonstrating the reversible utilization of anthracene as a redox reservoir. With diphenylacetylene under CO, cyclopentadienone is formed stoichiometrically. 2 is competent for the catalytic formation of pyrimidines from alkynes and nitriles. Mechanistic studies suggest that selectivity for pyrimidine originates from preferred formation of an azazirconacyclopentadiene intermediate, which reacts preferentially with nitriles over alkynes.

Abstract
The mechanism of the reductive homocoupling of pyridine derivatives mediated by the ZrII synthon [(PNP)Zr(η6-toluene)Cl] (1) has been investigated. Selective transformation into three different types of product complexes has been observed, depending on the N-heterocyclic substrate employed: the bipyridyl complexes 3-R (R = Me, Et, t Bu, Bn, Ph, CHCHPh), which are the homocoupling products, the η2-((4-dimethylamino)pyridyl) complex 4 as well as the bis(isoquinolinyl) complex 5. By deuterium labelling experiments the participation of the ligand backbone in the pyridine coupling reaction via potential cyclometallation steps was ruled out. Based on DFT modelling of the possible reaction sequences a reaction mechanism for the coupling sequence could be identified. The latter is initiated by a reductive syn C-C coupling rather than based on an initial C-H activation of the pyridine substrate.

Abstract
The zirconium methylidene (PNP)Zr=CH2 (OAr) (1) reacts with N3 Ad to give two products (PNP)Zr=NAd(OAr) (2) and (PNP)Zr(η2 -N=NAd)(N=CH2 )(OAr) (3), both resulting from a common cycloaddition intermediate (PNP)Zr(CH2 N3 Ad)(OAr) (A). Using a series of control experiments in combination with DFT calculations, it was found that 2 results from a nitrene by a carbene metathesis reaction in which N2 acts as a delivery vehicle and forms N2 CH2 as a side product. In the case of 3, N-N bond splitting of the azide at the α-position allowed the isolation of a rare example of a parent ketimide complex of zirconium. Isotopic labeling studies and solid-state X-ray analysis are presented for 2 and 3, in addition to an independent synthesis for the former.

Abstract
The benzylene-linked [PNP] scaffolds HN(CH2-o-C6H4PPh2)2 ([A]H) and HN(C6H4-o-CH2PPh2)2 ([B]H) have been used for the synthesis of zirconium and hafnium complexes. For both ligands, the dimethylamides [A]M(NMe2)3 ([A]1-M) and [B]M(NMe2)3 ([B]1-M) were prepared and converted to the iodides [A]MI3 ([A]2-M) and [B]MI3 ([B]2-M) (M = Zr, Hf). Starting from these iodides, the corresponding benzyl derivatives [A]MBn3 ([A]3-M) and [B]MBn3 ([B]3-M) (M = Zr, Hf) were obtained via reaction with Bn2Mg(OEt2)2. For zirconium, the benzylic ligand positions in [A]3-Zr and [B]3-Zr were found to cyclometalate readily, which led to the corresponding κ4-[PCNP]ZrBn2 complexes [A]4-Zr and [B]4-Zr. As these complexes failed to hydrogenate cleanly, cyclometalated derivatives with only one alkyl substituent were targeted and the mixed benzyl chlorides κ4-[PCNP]MBnCl ([B]5-M, M = Zr, Hf) were obtained in the case of ligand [B]. Upon hydrogenation of [B]5-Zr, the η6-tolyl complex [B]Zr(η6-C7H8)Cl ([B]6-Zr) was generated cleanly, but the corresponding hafnium complex [B]5-Hf was found to decompose unselectively in the presence of H2. Using a closely related carbazole-based [PNP] ligand, Gade and co-workers have shown recently that zirconium η6-arene complexes similar to [B]6-Zr may serve as zirconium(ii) synthons, namely when reacted with 2,6-Dipp-NC (L) or pyridine (py). Both these substrates were shown to react cleanly with [B]6-Zr, which led to the formation of the bis-isocyanide complex [B]ZrCl(L)2 ([B]7-Zr) and the 2,2'-bipyridine derivative [B]ZrCl(bipy) ([B]8-Zr), respectively. Upon reaction of [B]Zr(η6-C7H8)Cl ([B]6-Zr) with NaBEt3H, the cyclometalated derivative κ4-[PCNP]Zr(η6-C7H8) ([B]9-Zr) was isolated. In an attempt to synthesise terminal hydrides, complexes [A]MI3 ([A]2-M) were treated with KBEt3H, which led to the isolation of the cyclometalated hydrido complexes κ4-[PCNP]M(H)(κ3-Et3BH) ([A]10-M; M = Zr, Hf) featuring a κ3-bound triethyl borohydride moiety.

Abstract
Low-valent TiII species have typically been synthesized by the reaction of TiIV halides with strong metal reductants. Herein we report that TiII species can be generated simply by reacting TiIV imido complexes with 2 equiv of alkyne, yielding a metallacycle that can reductively eliminate pyrrole while liberating TiII. In order to probe the generality of this process, TiII-catalyzed alkyne trimerization reactions were carried out with a diverse range of TiIV precatalysts.
