Asymmetric Spirobiacridine-based Delayed Fluorescence Emitters for High-performance Organic Light-Emitting Devices

Introducing Spiro-locks into the Nitrogen/Carbonyl System towards Efficient Narrowband Deep-blue Multi-resonance TADF Emitters

The current availability of multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials with excellent color purity and high device efficiency in the deep-blue region is appealing. To address this issue in the emerged nitrogen/carbonyl MR-TADF system, we propose a spiro-lock strategy. By incorporating spiro functionalization into a concise molecular skeleton, a series of emitters (SFQ, SOQ, SSQ, and SSeQ) can enhance molecular rigidity, blue-shift the emission peak, narrow the emission band, increase the photoluminescence quantum yield by over 92 %, and suppress intermolecular interactions in the film state. The referent CZQ without spiro structure has a more planar skeleton, and its bluer emission in the solution state redshifts over 40 nm with serious spectrum broadening and a low PLQY in the film state. As a result, SSQ achieves an external quantum efficiency of 25.5 % with a peak at 456 nm and a small full width at half maximum of 31 nm in a simple unsensitized device, significantly outperforming CZQ. This work discloses the importance of spiro-junction in modulating deep-blue MR-TADF emitters.

Construction of Annulated Spiro[4.4]-nonane-diones via the Tandem [4 + 2]-Cycloaddition/Aromatization Reaction

A method for the synthesis of both symmetric and asymmetric fused spiro[4.4]-nonane-dione derivatives has been developed. It is based on a Diels-Alder reaction of spiro[4.4]nona-2,7-diene-1,6-dione as a dienophile component followed by immediate aromatization of the adduct. An active diene component can be generated using the tetrabromoxylene/NaI system, the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran/BF3 system, or substituted cyclones.

A Tetrahedral Bisacridine Donor Enables Fast Radiative Decay in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter

Achieving high efficiency and low efficiency roll-off simultaneously is of great significance for further application of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters. A balance between radiative decay and reversed intersystem crossing must be carefully established. Herein, we propose a qunolino-acridine (QAc) donor composing two acridine with both planar (pAc) and bended (bAc) geometries. Combining with triazine, a TADF emitter QAc-TRZ is assembled. The pAc provides a well interaction with triazine which ensures a decent TADF behavior, while the bAc offers a delocalization of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) which guarantees an enhancement of radiative decay. Remarkably, QAc-TRZ enables a highly efficient organic light emitting diode (OLED) with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 37.3 %. More importantly, the efficiencies under 100/1000 cd m^-2 stay 36.3 % and 31.7 %, respectively, and remain 21.5 % even under 10 000 cd m^-2 .
