Abstract
The effect of the combined use of amino acid-based ionic liquids (AAILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with either cyclodextrin- (CD) or cyclofructan- (CF) based chiral selectors for the chiral separation of amphetamine derivatives was investigated in the present study. A non-significant improvement in enantiomeric separation of target analytes was observed when AAILs were combined with either CF or CD. On the other side, a markedly improved chiral separation of enantiomers was obtained using the dual carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin/DES system, highlighting the existence of a synergistic effect. After the addition of 0.5% v/v of choline chloride-ethylene glycol, the resolution of the enantiomers of amphetamine, methamphetamine and 3-fluorethamphetamine, increased from 1.4, 1.1, 1.0 to 1.8, 1.8, and 1.5 min, and the analysis times increased from 19.54, 20.48, 18.71 to 35.71, 35.78 and 32.90 min, respectively. This was not the case for the CF/DES dual system, in which the separation of amphetamines worsened, indicating an antagonistic effect. In conclusion, DESs are a very promising additive in capillary electrophoresis that can improve the separation of chiral molecules in combination with CDs but not CFs.

Abstract
A series of chiral pyrrolidinium salts containing (1 S)-endo-(-)-born-2-yloxymethyl substituent in the structure of the cation and six different anions: chloride, tetrafluoroborate [BF4 ]- , hexafluorophosphate [PF6 ]- , trifluoromethanesulfonate [OTf]- , bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [NTf2 ]- , bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide [NPf2 ]- and perfluorobutanesulfonate [C4 FS]- were efficiently prepared and extensively characterized. The enantiomeric purity of them was confirmed by NMR analysis with a chemical shift reagent. All salts were characterized with the specific rotation, the solubility in commonly used solvents, thermal properties, including phase transition temperatures and thermal stability. Salts with [PF6 ]- , [C4 FS]- , [NTf2 ]- and [NPf2 ]- anions were classified as chiral ionic liquids (CILs). Moreover, salts with [NTf2 ]- and [NPf2 ]- anions were in the liquid state at room temperature and below. Therefore, density and dynamic viscosity, the surface tension and the contact angle on three different surfaces were also measured for them. Additionally, these chiral ionic liquids were tested as solvents in Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract
In this work, two chiral methods enabling the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers were developed by Electrokinetic Chromatography. A cyclodextrin (CD) or a mixture of the CD and a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) was used as chiral selector. Using the single CD system, seven neutral and six anionic CDs were tested in a formate buffer at pH 3.0 working in positive and negative polarity, respectively. The use of sulfated-γ-CD (S-γ-CD) and negative polarity originated the best results considering analysis time and enantioresolution. The optimization of the experimental conditions allowed obtaining the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers in an analysis time of 4.2 min with an enantioresolution value of 1.5. The effect of the addition of fifteen CILs on the enantioresolution was evaluated showing that both analysis time and enantioresolution were generally increased. A mixture of S-γ-CD and [TMA][L-Lys] was selected which provided the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers in 8.1 min with an enantioresolution value of 3.3 under the same experimental conditions as in the case of using the single CD system. The enantiomeric impurity (S-ibrutinib) was the first-migrating isomer when using the single CD and the combined CD/CIL systems, as corresponds to the most desirable situation. Both chiral methods allowed the detection of the enantiomeric impurity up to a 0.1% as established by the International Council on Harmonization. After establishing the analytical characteristics of both chiral methodologies developed, they were applied to the enantiomeric determination of ibrutinib in a pharmaceutical formulation for hospital use marketed as pure enantiomer (R-ibrutinib) and to evaluate the stability and ecotoxicity of racemic ibrutinib and R-ibrutinib on Daphnia magna. The developed methodologies enabled, for the first time, the rapid chiral quantitation of ibrutinib in abiotic and biotic matrices.

Abstract
Ionic chiral selectors have been received much attention in the field of asymmetric catalysis, chiral recognition, and preparative separation. It has been shown that the addition of ionic chiral selectors can enhance the recognition efficiency dramatically due to the presence of multiple intermolecular interactions, including hydrogen bond, π-π interaction, van der Waals force, electrostatic ion-pairing interaction, and ionic-hydrogen bond. In the initial research stage of the ionic chiral selectors, most of work center on the application in chromatographic separation (capillary electrophoresis, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography). Differently, more and more attention has been paid on the spectroscopy (nuclear magnetic resonance, fluorescence, ultraviolet and visible absorption spectrum, and circular dichroism spectrum) and electrochemistry in recent years. In this tutorial review as regards the ionic chiral selectors, we discuss in detail the structural features, properties, and their application in chromatography, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are chemical compounds composed of ions with melting points below 100 °C exhibiting a design feature. ILs are commonly used as the so-called green solvents, reagents or highly efficient catalysts in varied chemical processes. The huge application potential of ionic liquids (IL) justifies the growing interest in these compounds. In the last decade, increasing attention has been devoted to the development of new methods in the synthesis of stable chiral ionic liquids (CILs) and their application in various separation techniques. The beginnings of the successful use of CILs to separate enantiomers date back to the 1990 s. Most chiral ILs are based on chiral cations or chiral anions. There is also a limited number of CILs possessing both a chiral cation and a chiral anion. Due to the high molecular diversity of both ions, of which at least one has a chiral center, we have the possibility to design a large variety of optically active structures, thus expanding the range of CIL applications. Research utilizing chiral ionic liquids only recently has become more popular. However, it is the area that still has great potential for future development. This review aimed to describe the diversity of structures, properties and examples of applications of chiral ionic liquids as new chiral solid materials and chiral components of the anisotropic environment, providing chiral recognition of enantiomeric analytes, which is useful in liquid chromatography, countercurrent chromatography and other various CIL-based extraction techniques including aqueous biphasic (ABS) extraction systems, solid-liquid two-phase systems, liquid-liquid extraction systems with hydrophilic CILs, liquid-liquid extraction systems with hydrophobic CILs, solid-phase extraction and induced-precipitation techniques developed in the recent years. The growing demand for pure enantiomers in the pharmaceutical and food industries sparks further development in the field of extraction and separation systems modified with CILs highlighting them as affordable and environmentally friendly both chiral selectors and solvents.

Abstract
The combined use of chiral ionic liquids (CILs) and conventional chiral selectors (CSs) in CE, to establish a synergistic system, has proven to be an effective approach for the separation of enantiomeric pairs. In this study, a new CE method was developed, employing a binary system of a CS, either a cyclodextrin (CD) or a cyclofructan (CF), and a chiral amino acid ester-based ionic liquid (AAIL), for the chiral separation of four basic, acidic and zwitterionic drug compounds. In particular, the enantioseparation of two anticoagulants, warfarin (WAR) and coumachlor (COU), a non-opioid analgesic, nefopam (NEF) and a third-generation antihistamine, fexofenadine (FXD), was examined, by supporting the BGE with a CS and the chiral AAIL L-alanine tert butyl ester lactate (L-AlaC4 Lac). Parameters, such as the type of the CS, the concentration of both the CS and L-AlaC4 Lac, and the BGE pH, were methodically examined in order to optimize the chiral separation of each analyte. It was observed that, in some cases, the addition of the AAIL into the BGE improved both resolution (Rs ) and efficiency (N) significantly. In other cases, the synergistic effect enabled baseline separation of analyte enantiomers, at a much lower concentration of the CS. Finally, after optimization of separation conditions, baseline separations (Rs >1.5) of all four analytes were achieved in less than 5 min.

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is one of the most widely employed analytical techniques to achieve enantiomeric separations. In spite of the fact that there are many chiral selectors commercially available to perform enantioseparations by CE, one of the most relevant topics in this field is the search for new selectors capable of providing high enantiomeric resolutions. Chiral ionic liquids (CILs) have interesting characteristics conferring them a high potential in chiral separations although only some of them are commercially available. The aim of this article is to review all the works published on the use of CILs as chiral selectors in the development of enantioselective methodologies by CE, covering the period from 2006 (when the first research work on this topic was published) to 2017. The use of CILs as sole chiral selectors, as chiral selectors in dual systems or as chiral ligands will be considered. This review also provides detailed analytical information on the experimental conditions used to carry out enantioseparations in different fields as well as on the separation mechanism involved.

Abstract
Two novel chiral stationary phases (CSPs) were prepared by bonding chiral imidazoliums on the surface of silica gel. The chiral imidazoles were derivatized from chiral amines, 1-phenylethylamine and 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine. The obtained CSPs were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis (EA), demonstrating the bonding densities of CSP 1 and CSP 2 were 0.43 mmol g-1 and 0.40 mmol g-1, respectively. These two CSPs could be used to availably separate 8 pharmaceuticals, 7 mandelic acid/its derivatives, 2 1-phenylethylamine derivatives, 1 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol, and 1 camphorsulfonic acid in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is found that CSP 1 could effectively enantioseparate most chiral analytes, especially the acidic components, while CSP 2 could enantiorecognize all chiral analytes, although a number of components did not achieve baseline separation. Additionally, the effects of mobile phase composition, mobile phase pH and salt content, chiral selector structures, and analyte structures on the enantiorecognitions of the two CSPs were investigated. It is found that high acetonitrile content in mobile phases was conducive to enantiorecognition. Mobile phase pH and salt content could alter the retention behaviors of different enantiomers of the same chiral compound, resulting in better enantioresolution. Moreover, both chiral selector structures and substituted groups of analytes played a significant role in the separation of chiral solutes.

Abstract
A new ionic liquid loaded silica gel amine (SG-APTMS-N,N-EPANTf₂) was developed, as an adsorptive material, for selective adsorption and determination of zirconium, Zr(IV), without the need for a chelating intermediate. Based on a selectivity study, the SG-APTMS-N,N-EPANTf₂ phase showed a perfect selectivity towards Zr(IV) at pH 4 as compared to other metallic ions, including gold [Au(III)], copper [Cu(II)], cobalt [Co(II)], chromium [Cr(III)], lead [Pb(II)], selenium [Se(IV)] and mercury [Hg(II)] ions. The influence of pH, Zr(IV) concentration, contact time and interfering ions on SG-APTMS-N,N-EPANTf₂ uptake for Zr(IV) was evaluated. The presence of incorporated donor atoms in newly synthesized SG-APTMS-N,N-EPANTf₂ phase played a significant role in enhancing its uptake capacity of Zr(IV) by 78.64% in contrast to silica gel (activated). The equilibrium and kinetic information of Zr(IV) adsorption onto SG-APTMS-N,N-EPANTf₂ were best expressed by Langmuir and pseudo second-order kinetic models, respectively. General co-existing cations did not interfere with the extraction and detection of Zr(IV). Finally, the analytical efficiency of the newly developed method was also confirmed by implementing it for the determination of Zr(IV) in several water samples.

Abstract
In this study, the applicability of a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) as the sole chiral selector in CE was investigated for the first time. In particular, five amino acid ester-based CILs were synthesized and used as additives in the BGE in order to evaluate their chiral recognition ability. The performance of these CILs as the sole chiral selectors was evaluated by using 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2-diylhydrogenphosphate (BNP) as the analyte and by comparing the resolution values. Different parameters were examined, such as the alkyl group bulkiness and the configuration of the cation, the anion type of the CIL and its concentration, and the pH of the BGE, in order to optimize the separation of the enantiomers and to demonstrate the effect that each parameter has on the chiral-recognition ability of the CIL. Baseline separation of BNP within 13 min was achieved by using a BGE of 100 mM Tris/10 mM sodium tetraboratedecahydrate (pH 8) and a chiral selector of 60 mM l-alanine tert butyl ester lactate. The run-to-run and batch-to-batch reproducibilities were also evaluated by computing the %RSD values of the EOF and the two enantiomer peaks. In both cases, very good reproducibilities were observed, since all %RSD values were below 1%.

Abstract
In the current study, spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of newly prepared ionic liquids were investigated. Ionic liquids were synthesized via a simple and straightforward route using a metathesis reaction of either N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine monohydrochloride or N-phenacylpyridinium bromide with bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium in water. High yield and purity were obtained for the resultant ionic liquids. Data acquired by use of (1)H NMR and FT-IR measurements were consistent with the chemical structures of newly prepared ionic liquids. Results of thermal gravimetric analysis also implied that these ionic liquids have good thermal stability. In addition, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy measurements provided that new ionic liquids are good absorbent and fluorescent. Time-based fluorescence steady-state measurements showed that ionic liquids have high photostability against photobleaching. For a deeper mechanistic understanding of the analytical potential of newly synthesized ionic liquids, spectroscopic and physicochemical parameters, including singlet absorption, extinction coefficient, fluorescence quantum yield, Stokes shift, oscillator strength and dipole moment, were also investigated.

Abstract
In the title compound, C(29)H(25)N(3)O, the central imidazole ring forms dihedral angles of 64.7 (3), 33.5 (3) and 81.2 (2)° with the pyridyl and two phenyl substituents, respectively. An intra-molecular C-H⋯N hydrogen bond is observed. In the crystal, O-H⋯N and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains parallel to the a axis.

Abstract
In the title compound, C30H25ClN2, the chiral center maintains the S configuration of the stating l-phenylalaninol. The two phenyl groups closest to the substituted N atom adopt an almost perpendicular orientation relative to the central imidazole ring, with dihedral angles of 88.9 (4) and 84.7 (3)°. The third phenyl group is nearly coplanar with it, making a dihedral angle of 11.0 (5)°.

Abstract
In recent years, the field of chiral ionic liquids (CILs) has undergone exponential growth. As the technology has advanced, new ways of synthesizing stable and structurally diverse ionic liquids have been established. This has led to heretofore unknown applications of CILs as well as in improving efficiency of previously identified applications. In this review article we have compiled a comprehensive database containing structures and physical properties of notable CILs that have been synthesized during the last 6 years. Their applications in the fields of asymmetric organic synthesis, spectroscopy, and chromatography are also illustrated. This is an expansion of our previous review, which covered the literature before 2005.

Abstract
Amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) have received great attention due to their potentials in catalysis and separations. In this work, functional AAILs were used as solvent and selector in chiral liquid–liquid extraction for the first time. The AAILs have shown distinct enantioselectivity in amino acid extraction. Using these functional AAILs as acceptor phase and ethylacetate as donor phase, more L-enantiomer of amino acid was extracted into the ionic liquid phase than that of D-enantiomer. The influencing factors, including AAILs structure, copper ion concentration, organic phase and amino acid concentration, were investigated. We found that the enantioselective enrichment of racemic amino acids was achieved through a chiral ligand-exchange mechanism. The enantioselectivity of single-step extraction was up to enantiomeric excess value of 50.6%. Moreover, the functional AAILs were found to be efficient extraction solvents for amino acids. The logarithm of distribution coefficient for L-Phe was in the range of 3.4–3.6 in the ionic liquid–ethylacetate two-phase system. This liquid–liquid extraction approach may extend the application of ionic liquids in chiral separations.

Abstract
We herein report the preparation and investigation of antibacterial activity of biocidal ionic liquids (ILs) consisting of cationic imidazolium or pyridinium and an anionic β-lactam antibiotic. The antibacterial properties were quantified by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecium. In general, the ILs had improved antibacterial activity than their parent materials, whether individually or in combination. In 83% of the experiments, the ampicillin ILs (Amp-ILs) had better antibacterial activities than their quaternary halide parent materials, whereas in 92% of the experiments, Amp-ILs outperformed the commercially available sodium ampicillin salt. Amp-ILs had up to 43 times improved antibacterial activity than sodium ampicillin. Overall, when normalized for ampicillin content, ILs had greater antimicrobial activity against E. coli O157:H7, K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, and E. faecium than sodium ampicillin alone.

Abstract
The thermal phase transitions and physicochemical properties of a series of 21 amino acid-derived protic ionic liquids and four protic molten salts have been investigated. Structure–property comparisons for this series were investigated for alkyl- and cyclic amino acid cations, and ethoxy and methoxy groups on the cation, combined with nitrate or various carboxylate-containing anions. All the protic fused salts were found to be ‘fragile’. Most of the protic fused salts exhibited a glass transition, with the transition temperatures ranging from –90° to –42°C. Viscosities and conductivities ranged from 0.03 to 15.46 Pa s and 0.02 to 2.20 mS cm–1 at 25°C respectively. The protic ionic liquids alanine methyl ester glycolate, proline methyl ester nitrate, and proline methyl ester glycolate were found to be capable of supporting amphiphile self-assembly. Lamellar or hexagonal liquid crystalline phases were observed with the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and the non-ionic surfactant Myverol 18–99K.
