Evaluation of oxalic acid extraction and quantification methods in the different purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) matrices and spinach (Spinacea oleracea)

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) and spinach (Spinacea oleracea) are species with elevated levels of oxalic acid, an antinutrient that interferes in the bioaccessibility of minerals such as calcium and iron. Evaluating methods to determine oxalic acid content with reduced matrix interference, such as employing Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS), can enhance the specificity of determinations. The different matrices of purslane (whole plant, leaves, and juice) and spinach (whole plant) were tested using three extraction methods (M1, M2, and M3). The oxalic acid content was evaluated by UV-vis spectrophotometry and FAAS (Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry). The absence of the precipitation step in M1 resulted in high levels of oxalic acid in the investigated matrices. The quantification of oxalic acid by FAAS for M2 (6M HCl for 1 hour at 100°C) and M3 (0.25N HCl for 15 minutes at 100°C) in the samples of purslane leaves and spinach whole plants yielded statistically similar results. However, the analysis by UV-vis spectrophotometry for M2 and M3 showed significant discrepancies in all evaluated samples, suggesting interference from colored compounds in the food matrix.•Comparison of methods of extraction•Comparison of UV-vis spectrophotometer and FAAS in the quantification of oxalic acid•Analysis of antinutrients in plant matrices.

Unleashing the antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of silica-based nanomaterials functionalized with an organotin(IV) compound

Bacterial diseases caused by superbugs are expected to be the main cause of death worldwide within a decade as a consequence of the resistance they are acquiring to the antibiotics currently in use, therefore, the field of new antibacterial treatments is currently being thoroughly studied. The present work focuses on the synthesis, functionalization, characterization and antibacterial behaviour of different systems based on three different silica-based nanostructured materials (MSN, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, SBA-15 Santa Barbara amorphous-15 and FSP fibrous slica nanoparticles) which serve as scaffolds for the support of different platforms to target and treat bacterial diseases and biofilm formation. Thus, (3-carboxypropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide (PPh3+) and a cytotoxic organotin(IV) fragment (Sn) have been incorporated in the silica-based materials to study their potential activity in different antibacterial applications. After a complete characterization of the synthesized systems, which confirmed the incorporation of both the targeting and the therapeutic fragments within the nanostructured materials, the antibacterial study of the materials demonstrated bactericidal capacity against Escherichia coli and perturbation of the bacteria metabolism via oxidative stress through an enhanced ROS (reactive oxygen species) production. In addition, biofilm inhibition and eradication tests of bacterial strains were carried out, showing that the activity of the materials in both biofilm inhibition and eradication is dependent on the concentration of the material. Furthemore, the material MSN-AP(1:1)-PPh3+-Sn containing the targeting triphenylphosphonium and a "SnPh3" fragment is capable of inhibiting and eradicating up to 50% of the formation of biofilms, which is outstanding for metallodrug-functionalized silica-based systems compared with other materials based on metal nanoparticles supported on silica. Finally, a hemolysis study was carried out with the nanostructured systems proving to be non-toxic, making them adequate for their subsequent use in preclinical trials through in vivo models.

Myrtenol-Loaded Fatty Acid Nanocarriers Protect Rat Brains Against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

This research investigated the preventive effects of myrtenol (MYR), fatty acid nanocarriers (FANC), and myrtenol-loaded FANC (MYR + FANC) on neurological disturbance, stroke volume, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the brain with ischemia-reperfusion injuries induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. Seventy two Wistar male rats were divided into six main groups. The groups were sham, ischemia-reperfusion group (MACO), MACO-MYR (50 mg/kg), MACO-FANC (50 and 100 mg/kg), and MACO-MYR + FANC (50 mg/kg). Stroke volume, neurological deficit scores, and the brain levels of MDA, SOD, and TNF-α were examined with TTC staining, observation, and ELISA, respectively. Pretreatment with MYR, FANC (100 mg/kg), and MYR + FANC reduced the neurological deficit score and cerebral infarction volume. MYR, FANC (100 mg/kg), and MYR + FANC pretreatment increased and decreased brain SOD and MDA levels compared to MACO group, respectively. The TNF-α level decreased in the MYR + FANC group compared to MCAO and MCAO-MYR groups in the brain. The use of FANC (100 mg/kg), MYR, and MYR + FANC has protective effects against oxidative stress and ischemia-reperfusion injury. FANC probably improve the bioavailability of MYR, as MYR+ FANC had more therapeutic effects on the reduction of ischemia-reperfusion injuries, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

Precise measurement of chiral spectrum in the ultraviolet band using weak measurement and a deep neural network model

Circular dichroism (CD) spectrum and optical rotation (OR) spectrum, crucial for understanding molecular properties and configurations, present challenges due to limited testing methods and equipment accuracy in the ultraviolet (UV) region. This study proposes a weak measurement system for chiral signals in varying concentrations in the ultraviolet range, optimized using a deep neural network (DNN) model. Introducing different post-selections to detect the circular dichroism spectrum and optical rotation spectrum separately, with contrast as a probe, it achieves a detection resolution of up to 10-6 rad. Moreover, the fitted value of the training data can reach 0.9989, enhancing the prediction accuracy of chiral molecule concentrations. This method exhibits considerable promise for applications in chiral measurement and sensor technologies.

Quick methylene blue dye elimination via SDS-Ag nanoparticles catalysts

Methylene blue dye, being toxic, carcinogenic and non-biodegradable, poses a serious threat for human health and environmental safety. The effective and time-saving removal of such industrial dye necessitates the use of innovative technologies such as silver nanoparticle-based catalysis. Utilizing a pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at the second harmonic generation of 532 nm with 2.6 J energy per pulse and 10 ns pulse duration, Ag nanoparticles were synthesized via an eco-friendly method with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as a capping agent. Different exposure times (15, 30, and 45 min) resulted in varying nanoparticle sizes. Characterization was achieved through UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Lorentzian fitting was used to model nanoparticle size, aligning well with SEM results. Mie's theory was applied to evaluate the absorption, scattering, and extinction cross-sectional area spectra. EDX revealed increasing Ag and carbon content with exposure time. The SDS-caped AgNPs nanoparticles were tested as catalyst for methylene blue degradation, achieving up to 92.5% removal in just 12 min with a rate constant of 0.2626 min-1, suggesting efficient and time-saving catalyst compared to previously reported Ag-based nanocatalysts.

Quantitative analysis of the quality constituents of Lonicera japonica Thunberg based on Raman spectroscopy

Quantitative analysis of the quality constituents of Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua [JYH]) using a feasible method provides important information on its evaluation and applications. Limitations of sample pretreatment, experimental site, and analysis time should be considered when identifying new methods. In response to these considerations, Raman spectroscopy combined with deep learning was used to establish a quantitative analysis model to determine the quality of JYH. Chlorogenic acid and total flavonoids were identified as analysis targets via network pharmacology. High performance liquid chromatograph and ultraviolet spectroscopy were used to construct standard curves for quantitative analysis. Raman spectra of JYH extracts (1200) were collected. Subsequently, models were built using partial least squares regression, Support Vector Machine, Back Propagation Neural Network, and One-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN). Among these, the 1D-CNN model showed superior prediction capability and had higher accuracy (R2 = 0.971), and lower root mean square error, indicating its suitability for rapid quantitative analysis.

Real time monitoring peripheral nerve function with ICG and BDA-ICG by NIR-II fluorescence imaging

Neuroanatomical tract tracers are important for studying axoplasmic transport and the complex interconnections of the nervous system. Though traditional fluorescent tracers are widely used, they have several prominent drawbacks when imaging, including low resolutions and low tissue penetrations and inability to be supervised dynamically within a long peripheral nerve during the long term. Here, we explored the potential of ICG as a neural tracer for axoplasmic transport and for the first time demonstrated that ICG could be used to detect transport function within peripheral nerve by near-infrared region II (NIR-II) imaging. On basis of this finding, a novel bi-directional neural tracer biotinylated dextran amine-indocyanine green (BDA-ICG) was prepared and characterized with better long-term stability and higher nerve-to-background ratio than ICG in vivo, and successfully imaged the injured peripheral nerve from the healthy one within 24 h. Our results show that BDA-ICG are promising neural tracers and clinically available dyes with NIR-II emission tail characteristics as ICG.

Electronic analysis of n-propyl xanthate complexes with group 12 metals: a theoretical-experimental study

CONTEXT

Xanthates are organic compounds of great interest in coordination chemistry due to their different basic sites, which allow them to form complexes with different coordination modes and geometries. These compounds are relevant in the environment and act as heavy metal collectors in aqueous environments. In this theoretical-experimental work, electronic spectroscopy studies of n-propyl xanthate complexes with group 12 metals were performed. This study verified structural differences in these systems, depending on the environment in which they are inserted. In addition, structural differences were observed when the solid was changed to an n-hexane solution. Thus, it was observed that the complexes assume a mononuclear structure in solution, while they present a polymeric form in the solid phase. The electronic spectra obtained through TD-DFT calculations were compared to those of the previously synthesized complexes. In the final theoretical analysis, the main orbitals involved in these transitions were assigned using population analysis calculations. The synthesis of the complexes was confirmed through infrared (MID and FAR), UV‒Vis, Raman, and NMR-1H spectroscopic analyses.

METHODS

The structures of the mononuclear and polymeric complexes were optimized in vacuum and n-hexane. Under vacuum, DFT levels M06L/6-311 + + G** + LANL2TZ and M06L/def2-TZVP were used for the mononuclear complexes, and M06L/LANL2DZ + LANL2 were used for the polymer complexes. For the calculations of the mononuclear complexes in n-hexane, the same level of theory was used for the solid state. TD-DFT calculations for 300 excited states were performed with the same levels of theory and used the optimized structures of the complexes. Furthermore, population analysis was carried out on all the systems studied. Gaussian 09 software was used for the structure optimization, TD-DFT, and population analysis calculations. GaussSum software was used to evaluate the molecular orbitals and electronic spectra.

Advances in the Optimization of Fe Nanoparticles: Unlocking Antifungal Properties for Biomedical Applications

In recent years, nanotechnology has achieved a remarkable status in shaping the future of biological applications, especially in combating fungal diseases. Owing to excellence in nanotechnology, iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) have gained enormous attention in recent years. In this review, we have provided a comprehensive overview of Fe NPs covering key synthesis approaches and underlying working principles, the factors that influence their properties, essential characterization techniques, and the optimization of their antifungal potential. In addition, the diverse kinds of Fe NP delivery platforms that command highly effective release, with fewer toxic effects on patients, are of great significance in the medical field. The issues of biocompatibility, toxicity profiles, and applications of optimized Fe NPs in the field of biomedicine have also been described because these are the most significant factors determining their inclusion in clinical use. Besides this, the difficulties and regulations that exist in the transition from laboratory to experimental clinical studies (toxicity, specific standards, and safety concerns) of Fe NPs-based antifungal agents have been also summarized.

Unveiling the Influence of Glutathione in Suppressing the Conversion of Aspirin to Salicylic Acid: A Fluorescence and DFT Study

Aspirin is a commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, associated with many adverse effects. The adverse effects of aspirin such as tinnitus, Reye's syndrome and gastrointestinal bleeding are caused due to conversion of aspirin into its active metabolite salicylic acid after oral intake. Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant produced by the liver and nerve cells in the central nervous system. It helps to metabolize toxins, break down free radicles, and support immune function. This study aims to investigate and explore the possibility of inhibiting aspirin to salicylic acid conversion in presence of glutathione at a molecular level using spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Visible absorption, time-Resolved and time-dependent fluorescence and theoretical DFT/ TD-DFT calculations. The results of steady state fluorescence spectroscopy and time-dependent fluorescence indicated that the aspirin to salicylic acid conversion is considerably inhibited in presence of glutathione. Further, the results presented here might have significant clinical implications for individuals with variations in glutathione level.

Comparison of Non-Covalent and Covalent Interactions between Lactoferrin and Chlorogenic Acid

Adding polyphenols to improve the absorption of functional proteins has become a hot topic. Chlorogenic acid is a natural plant polyphenol with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Bovine lactoferrin is known for its immunomodulatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and iron-chelating properties. Therefore, the non-covalent binding of chlorogenic acid (CA) and bovine lactoferrin (BLF) with different concentrations under neutral conditions was studied. CA was grafted onto lactoferrin molecules by laccase catalysis, free radical grafting, and alkali treatment. The formation mechanism of non-covalent and covalent complexes of CA-BLF was analyzed by experimental test and theoretical prediction. Compared with the control BLF, the secondary structure of BLF in the non-covalent complex was rearranged and unfolded to provide more active sites, the tertiary structure of the covalent conjugate was changed, and the amino group of the protein participated in the covalent reaction. After adding CA, the covalent conjugates have better functional activity. These lactoferrin-polyphenol couplings can carry various bioactive compounds to create milk-based delivery systems for encapsulation.

Unravelling the enhanced rifampicin photocatalytic degradation over green-synthesized SrO2@SnIn4S8 p-n heterojunction: Pathway, toxicity evaluation and mechanistic insights

In recent years, the discharge of pharmaceutical drugs into aquatic ecosystems has become a growing concern, posing a significant threat to aquatic life. In response to this environmental challenge, advanced oxidation processes have gained prominence in wastewater treatment due to their efficacy in eliminating pharmaceutical pollutants and their potential for reusability. In this study, we have fabricated SnIn4S8 coupled SrO2 nano-heterojunction (NH) using a greener co-precipitation approach using leaf extract derived from Acaphyla wilkesiana. The resulting NH exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity against rifampicin (RIF), achieving a remarkable 97.4% degradation under visible light, surpassing the performance of its individual components. The morphological characteristics of the NH were thoroughly analyzed through SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS techniques, while EIS, DRS, and BET techniques provided valuable insights into its photocatalytic and optical properties. Furthermore, radical scavenging assays and ESR analysis identified hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (O2•-) were the species contributing to the visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation. The study also elucidated the potential degradation pathways and intermediates of RIF through GC-MS analysis. Additionally, the toxicity of the produced intermediates was assessed using the ECOSAR model. The findings have significant implications for the treatment of pharmaceutical pollutants and underscore the importance of eco-friendly synthesis methods in addressing environmental challenges.

Quantification of peracetic acid (PAA) in the H2O2 + acetic acid reaction by the wavelength shift analysis in near-UV/visible absorption region

In our study, we present an innovative method for the analysis and real-time monitoring of peracetic acid (PAA) formation within the near-UV/Vis (visible) wavelength region. PAA's absorption spectrum, influenced by its presence in a complex quaternary equilibrium mixture with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), acetic acid, and water, lacks discernible peaks. This inherent complexity challenges conventional analytical techniques like Beer's law, which rely on absorption intensity as a foundation. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel approach that centers on the analysis of blue shifts in absorption wavelengths, particularly at an absorbance of 0.8 a.u. This method significantly enhances the precision of calibration curves for both diluted PAA and H2O2, unveiling an exponential correlation between wavelength and the logarithm of concentration for both components. Significantly, our approach allows for real-time and accurate measurements, especially during the dynamic PAA formation reaction. Our results exhibit excellent agreement with data obtained from Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, validating the reliability of our method. It's noteworthy that under stable PAA concentration conditions (after 12 h of solution interaction), both traditional absorption method and our approach closely align with the FT-IR method. However, in dynamic scenarios (0-12 h), the absorption method exhibits higher error rates compared to our approach. Additionally, the increased concentration of a catalyst, sulfuric acid (H2SO4), significantly reduces the errors in both methods, a finding that warrants further exploration. In summary, our study not only advances our understanding of PAA and its spectral behavior but also introduces innovative and precise methods for determining PAA concentration in complex solutions. These advancements hold the potential to revolutionize the field of chemical analysis and spectroscopy.

Molecular insight into binding behavior of caffeine with lactoferrin: Spectroscopic, molecular docking, and simulation study

The majority of bioactive substances in the human diet come from polyphenols. Here, we use spectroscopy, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and in vitro digestion to look at the relationship between caffeine (CAF) and bovine lactoferrin (BLF). The correlation analysis of the CAF-BLF fluorescence quenching process revealed that the reaction was spontaneous and that the CAF-BLF fluorescence quenching process may have been static. The predominant intrinsic binding forces were hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, which were also supported by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Through Fourier infrared and circular dichroism spectroscopy experiments, it was found that CAF changed the secondary structure of BLF and might bind to the hydrophobic amino acids of BLF. Compared with BLF, CAF-BLF showed inhibitory effects on digestion in simulated in vitro digestion. It will be helpful to better understand the interaction between CAF and BLF and provide the basis for the development of innovative dairy products.

Exploring the Versatility of Exosomes: A Review on Isolation, Characterization, Detection Methods, and Diverse Applications

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial mediators of intercellular communication and can be classified based on their physical properties, biomolecular structure, and origin. Among EVs, exosomes have garnered significant attention due to their potential as therapeutic and diagnostic tools. Exosomes are released via fusion of multivesicular bodies on plasma membranes and can be isolated from various biofluids using methods such as differential ultracentrifugation, immune affinity capture, ultrafiltration, and size exclusion chromatography. Herein, an overview of different techniques for exosome characterization and isolation, as well as the diverse applications of exosome detection, including their potential use in drug delivery and disease diagnosis, is provided. Additionally, we discuss the emerging field of exosome detection by sensors, which offers an up-and-coming avenue for point-of-care diagnostic tools development. Overall, this review aims to provide a exhaustive and up-to-date summary of the current state of exosome research.

Synthesis and characterization of a novel Mannich base benzimidazole derivative to explore interaction with human serum albumin and antimicrobial property: experimental and theoretical approach

The novel Mannich base benzimidazole derivative (CB-1), 1-((1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)(3-chlorophenyl)methyl)-3-phenylurea) has been designed and synthesized by reacting benzimidazole, 3-chloro benzaldehyde, and N-Phenyl urea. CB-1 has been characterized by UV- Visible, FTIR, and 1H NMR. CB-1 was explored to study the interaction with the most abundant blood protein which involved in the role of transport of molecules (drugs), human serum albumin (HSA). Fluorescence results are evident for the presence of both dynamic and static quenching mechanisms in the binding of CB-1 to HSA. Antimicrobial screening were carried out against three bacteria and three fungi pathogens employing disc diffusion method. Molecular docking using AutoDock Vina tool further confirms the experimental binding interactions obtained from fluorescence. Density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/6-311G++ basis set was used for correlating theoretical data and obtaining optimized structures of CB-1 along with reactants with molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map and HOMO→LUMO energy gap calculation. Imaging fine structures of the human trabecular meshwork in vivo using a custom design goniolens and OCT gonioscopy

The trabecular meshwork (TM), located within the iridocorneal angle, is a target for many glaucoma treatments aimed at controlling intraocular pressure. However, structural variations between individuals are poorly understood. We propose a newly designed gonioscopic lens optimized for high-resolution imaging to image fine structures of the human TM in vivo. The body of the new lens is index-matched to the human cornea and includes a choice of two gonioscopic mirrors (59° and 63°) and matching air-spaced doublets placed on the anterior surface of the goniolens. The new design allows a diffraction-limited image plane at the iridocorneal angle structures. The goniolens design was built and then placed on the subjectś eyes coupled to the cornea with goniogel and a 3D adjustable mount. Images were obtained using a commercially available OCT device (Heidelberg Spectralis). The optical resolution was measured in a model eye as 40.32 and 45.25 cy/mm respectively for each mirror angle. In humans, dense OCT scans with minimum spacing oriented tangential to the iris and ICA were performed on 7 healthy subjects (23-73 yrs). The TM was successfully imaged in all subjects. The custom goniolens improved the contrast of the uveoscleral meshwork structures and corneoscleral meshwork revealing limbus parallel striations, not visible with previous goniolens designs. Transverse OCT images were constructed along the segmentation line, providing an enface image of the TM structures including corneoscleral beams, previously only imaged in vivo using custom adaptive optics systems.

This paper presents the development of a portable device that can be used for liquid identification using the concept of Beer-Lambert law. The final device can recognize up to 30 different materials in their liquid state and provides some other useful features that can enhance its operation. The user can set a group of 30 liquids according to specific needs and applications. The device can provide the user with some specific settings to start the measurements. The volume of a fluid is identified by a 4 mL sample inserted in the cuvette, then the user can start measuring the concentration of some common solvents like methanol, ethanol, etc. by passing a light of different wavelengths through the sample. The amount of the transferred light is measured using photodetectors and the readings depend on the amount of absorption. The amount of absorption depends on the sample types, colors, contents, and concentrations, so it is used as the main indicator to identify a specific sample.

Phytobioactive compounds as therapeutic agents for human diseases: A review

Phytobioactive compounds are plant secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds abundantly present in medicinal plants and have remarkable therapeutic potential. Oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance are major causes of present-day ailments such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and inflammation. The data for this review were collected from Google Scholar, PubMed, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and Science Direct by using keywords: "Medicinal plants, Phytobioactive compounds, Polyphenols, Alkaloids, Carotenoids etc." Several studies have reported the pharmacological and therapeutic potential of the phytobioactives. Polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenes, and polysaccharides isolated from medicinal plants showed remarkable antioxidant, anticancer, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and antidiabetic activities. This literature review was planned to provide comprehensive insight into the biopharmacological and therapeutic potential of phytobioactive compounds. The techniques used for the extraction and isolation of phytobioactive compounds, and bioassays required for their biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities, have been discussed. Characterization techniques for the structural elucidation of phytobioactive compounds such as HPLC, TLC, FTIR, GC-MS/MS, and NMR have also been discussed. This review concludes that phytobioactive compounds may be used as potential alternative to synthetic compounds as therapeutic agents for the treatment of various diseases.

A COF-coated ordered porous framework as multifunctional polysulfide barrier towards high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

The practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is still hindered by the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) and slow sulfur conversion kinetics. Herein, a LiPS inhibited covalent organic framework (COF)-coated conductive porous metal oxide design strategy is proposed towards the development of efficient and durable sulfur cathode in LSBs. This strategy is demonstrated by coating a TpPa-1 COF layer on cobalt-decorated titanium oxynirtide (TiO_xN_y) with a three-dimensional ordered microporous framework (3DOM) structure. In this strategy, the oxygen-deficient TiO_xN_y framework ensures a good conductivity and structural stability of the cathode during the charge/discharge process. The 3DOM macrospores provide a high capacity for sulfur accommodation and exposes active interfaces, whereas the coated TpPa-1 COF featured with ultrafine microspore offer an effective confinement of LiPS within the 3DOM framework, mitigating its shuttling effect. At the same time, the Co embedded in 3DOM TiO_xN_y servers as efficient catalyst promoting the sulfur electrochemical reaction. Attributed to these structural superiorities, the 3DOM TpPa-1@Co/TiO_xN_y/S cathode exhibits excellent performance even under high sulfur loading and low electrolyte condition. This work of using microporous COF coating with conductive macroporous metal oxides offers an effective alternative strategy for the design of practical sulfur battery.

Studying kinetics of a surface reaction using elastocapillary effect

HYPOTHESIS

When a liquid is inserted inside a microfluidic channel, embedded within a soft elastomeric layer, e.g. poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), the thin wall of the channel deforms, due to change in solid-liquid interfacial energy. This phenomenon is known as Elastocapillary effect. The evolution of a new species at this interface too alters the interfacial energy and consequently the extent of deformation. Hence, it should be possible to monitor dynamics of physical and chemical events occurring near to the solid-liquid interface by measuring this deformation by a suitable method, e.g., optical profilometer.

EXPERIMENTS

Aqueous solution of a metal salt inserted into these channels reacts with Silicon-hydride present in PDMS, yielding metallic nanoparticles at the channel surface. The kinetics of this reaction was captured in real time, by measuring the wall deformation. Similarly, physical adsorption of a protein: Bovine Serum Albumin, on PDMS surface too was monitored.

FINDING

The rate of change in deformation can be related to rate of these processes to extract the respective reaction rate constant. These results show that Elastocapillary effect can be a viable analytical tool for in-situ monitoring of many physical and chemical processes for which, the reaction site is inaccessible to conventional analytical methods.

A review on nanoparticles: characteristics, synthesis, applications, and challenges

The significance of nanoparticles (NPs) in technological advancements is due to their adaptable characteristics and enhanced performance over their parent material. They are frequently synthesized by reducing metal ions into uncharged nanoparticles using hazardous reducing agents. However, there have been several initiatives in recent years to create green technology that uses natural resources instead of dangerous chemicals to produce nanoparticles. In green synthesis, biological methods are used for the synthesis of NPs because biological methods are eco-friendly, clean, safe, cost-effective, uncomplicated, and highly productive. Numerous biological organisms, such as bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, algae, yeast, and plants, are used for the green synthesis of NPs. Additionally, this paper will discuss nanoparticles, including their types, traits, synthesis methods, applications, and prospects.

Experimental checking and modeling of the influence of operation conditions on the first order kinetic constants in free water surface wetlands

The most commonly used model in constructed wetlands is the first-order removal model, and first order kinetic constants (k) are the key parameters. The presumption is often made that k are constants. However, it is possible that k are functions of operating conditions, but the influence of operation conditions on k is unclear. In this study, response surface methodology was used to explore the variation patterns of k_a (area rate constants) and k_V (volume rate constants) for the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in free water surface (FWS) wetlands. The experimental variables included hydraulic loading rate (HLR), water depth, and inlet concentration (C_in). The results showed that k_V was more variable than k_a, and the area-based first-order model is more suitable for simulating TN and TP in FWS wetlands. Inlet concentration (C_in) was significant for k_a; C_in and water depth were significant for k_V; HLR and the interaction between factors were insignificant. The effects of C_in on k_a and k_V can be described by an upward convex quadratic curve, while the effect of water depth on k_V demonstrates a downward convex quadratic curve. The first-order area rate constant for TN removal was given by k = -47.66 + 22.01 C_in - 1.154 C_in²; the first-order area rate constant for TP removal was given by k = -27.75 + 95.88 C_in - 30.73 C_in². Based on the variation patterns, the traditional k-C model was modified to the k^ψ-C model. The k^ψ-C model produced the best results at simulating the outlet concentration and removal efficiency (RE).

In Situ and Operando Characterizations of Metal Halide Perovskite and Solar Cells: Insights from Lab-Sized Devices to Upscaling Processes

The performance and stability of metal halide perovskite solar cells strongly depend on precursor materials and deposition methods adopted during the perovskite layer preparation. There are often a number of different formation pathways available when preparing perovskite films. Since the precise pathway and intermediary mechanisms affect the resulting properties of the cells, in situ studies have been conducted to unravel the mechanisms involved in the formation and evolution of perovskite phases. These studies contributed to the development of procedures to improve the structural, morphological, and optoelectronic properties of the films and to move beyond spin-coating, with the use of scalable techniques. To explore the performance and degradation of devices, operando studies have been conducted on solar cells subjected to normal operating conditions, or stressed with humidity, high temperatures, and light radiation. This review presents an update of studies conducted in situ using a wide range of structural, imaging, and spectroscopic techniques, involving the formation/degradation of halide perovskites. Operando studies are also addressed, emphasizing the latest degradation results for perovskite solar cells. These works demonstrate the importance of in situ and operando studies to achieve the level of stability required for scale-up and consequent commercial deployment of these cells.

Machine Learning Identification of Organic Compounds Using Visible Light

Identifying chemical compounds is essential in several areas of science and engineering. Laser-based techniques are promising for autonomous compound detection because the optical response of materials encodes enough electronic and vibrational information for remote chemical identification. This has been exploited using the fingerprint region of infrared absorption spectra, which involves a dense set of absorption peaks that are unique to individual molecules, thus facilitating chemical identification. However, optical identification using visible light has not been realized. Using decades of experimental refractive index data in the scientific literature of pure organic compounds and polymers over a broad range of frequencies from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, we develop a machine learning classifier that can accurately identify organic species based on a single-wavelength dispersive measurement in the visible spectral region, away from absorption resonances. The optical classifier proposed here could be applied to autonomous material identification protocols and applications.

Euphorbia tirucalli latex loaded polymer nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, in vitro release and in vivo antinociceptive action

The encapsulation of drugs in micro and nanocarriers has helped to resolve mechanisms of cellular resistance and decrease drug side effects as well. In this study, poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) was used to encapsulate the Euphol active substance-containing latex from Euphorbia tirucalli (E-latex). The nanoparticles (NP) were prepared using the solvent evaporation method and the physical and chemical properties were evaluated using spectrophotometric techniques. FTIR was used to prove the formation of the ester bond between the E-latex and PLGA-NP. The UV-Vis spectroscopic technique was used to show that more than 75% of the latex was encapsulated; the same technique was used to determine the release profile of the compound at different pH values, as well as determining the speed with which the process occurs through kinetic models, and it was observed that the best adjustments occurred for the Korsmeyer-Peppas model and the Higuchi model. The DLS technique was used to determine the diameter of the particles produced as well as their zeta potential (ZP). The sizes of the particles varied from 497 to 764 nm, and it was observed that the increase in E-latex concentration causes a reduction in the diameter of the NP and an increase in the ZP (-1.44 to -22.7 mV), due to more functional groups from latex film being adsorbed to the NPs surfaces. The thermogravimetric experiments exhibit the glass transition temperatures (Tg) that is appropriate for the use of formulated NPs as a stable drug delivery device before use. The in vivo activity of E-NPs (30 and 100 mg/Kg/p.o.) was tested against carrageenan-induced mechanical hypernociception. The data demonstrated a significantly antinociceptive effect for E-NPs, suggesting that E-latex nanoencapsulation preserved its desired properties.

Multiple Facets of Modeling Electronic Absorption Spectra of Systems in Solution

In this Perspective, we outline the essential physicochemical aspects that need to be considered when building a reliable approach to describe absorption properties of solvated systems. In particular, we focus on how to properly model the complexity of the solvation phenomenon, arising from dynamical aspects and specific, strong solute-solvent interactions. To this end, conformational and configurational sampling techniques, such as Molecular Dynamics, have to be coupled to accurate fully atomistic Quantum Mechanical/Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) methodologies. By exploiting different illustrative applications, we show that an effective reproduction of experimental spectral signals can be achieved by delicately balancing exhaustive sampling, hydrogen bonding, mutual polarization, and nonelectrostatic effects.

Lignin-containing Nanocellulose for in situ Chemical-Free Synthesis of AgAu-based Nanoparticles with Potent Antibacterial Activities

Lignin-containing nanocelluloses (LNCs) have the properties of both lignin and nanocellulose and could overcome the limits of both individual components in metallic nanoparticle synthesis. However, studies on LNCs are still limited, and the potential of such nanomaterials for metallic nanoparticle synthesis has not been fully unraveled. In this study, monometallic silver, gold nanoparticles, and Ag-Au-AgCl nanohybrids were synthesized in situ utilizing LNCs in a chemical-free approach. The parameters, including Ag⁺ and Au³⁺ concentrations as well as [Au³⁺]/[Ag⁺] ratios, were investigated for their effects on the nanoparticle synthesis. The characterizations, including UV-vis spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirmed the coexistence of Ag, Au, and AgCl while indicating the key role of lignin and oxygen-containing functional groups in the nanoparticle synthesis. The as-synthesized AgNPs-, AuNPs-, and nanohybrids-LNC samples were tested for their antibacterial activities. In comparison to the monometallic AgNPs-LNC sample, nanohybrids-LNC synthesized with 0.063 mM Au³⁺ loading showed superior antibacterial activities with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) at 5 μg/mL against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and 10 μg/mL against Gram-negative Salmonella typhimurium with controlled Ag⁺ release. The results indicated that LNCs can be used to synthesize metallic nanoparticles, and the resultant Ag-Au-AgCl nanohybrids were a potent antibacterial agent with reduced environmental impacts.

Anthocyanins of Açaí Applied as a Colorimetric Indicator of Milk Spoilage: A Study Using Agar-Agar and Cellulose Acetate as Solid Support to Be Applied in Packaging

Food that is still fit for consumption is wasted in the domestic environment every day, so food packaging technologies are being developed that will monitor the quality of the products in real time. Highly perishable milk is currently one of the products that suffers most from this waste, due to its short shelf life. Active use-by date (AUBD) indicators have been shown to discriminate between fresh and spoiled milk. Colorimetric indicators undergo characteristic changes in their chemical structure, causing abrupt color changes. Among the polymeric materials studied that may function as solid support are cellulose acetate (CA) and agar-agar (AA). The AA colorimetric indicator proved to be more suitable as a solid support due to its ability to maintain the color change properties of the anthocyanin and its high colorimetric performance. The technique was shown to be capable of indicating, in real time, changes in milk quality.

Oxidation of Styrene to Benzaldehyde Catalyzed by Schiff Base Functionalized Triazolylidene Ni(II) Complexes

Four new Schiff base functionalized 1,2,3-triazolylidene nickel complexes, [Ni-(L1NHC)2](PF6)2; 3, [Ni-(L2NHC)2](PF6)2; 4, [Ni-(L3NHC)](PF6)2; 7 and [Ni-(L4NHC)](PF6)2; 8, (where L1NHC = (E)-3-methyl-1-propyl-4-(2-(((2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)imino)methyl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate(V), 1, L2NHC = (E)-3-methyl-4-(2-((phenethylimino)methyl)phenyl)-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate(V), 2, L3NHC = 4,4′-(((1E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium) hexafluorophosphate(V), 5, and L4NHC = 4,4′-(((1E)-(butane-1,4-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-3-ium) hexafluorophosphate(V), 6), were synthesised and characterised by a variety of spectroscopic methods. Square planar geometry was proposed for all the nickel complexes. The catalytic potential of the complexes was explored in the oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde, using hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant in the presence of acetonitrile at 80 °C. All complexes showed good catalytic activity with high selectivity to benzaldehyde. Complex 3 gave a conversion of 88% and a selectivity of 70% to benzaldehyde in 6 h. However, complexes 4 and 7–8 gave lower conversions of 48–74% but with higher (up to 90%) selectivity to benzaldehyde. Results from kinetics studies determined the activation energy for the catalytic oxidation reaction as 65 ± 3 kJ/mol, first order in catalyst and fractional order in the oxidant. Results from UV-visible and CV studies of the catalytic activity of the Ni-triazolylidene complexes on styrene oxidation did not indicate any clear possibility of generation of a Ni(II) to Ni(III) catalytic cycle.

Microbial Mediated Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles, Characterization and Multifaceted Applications

Nanoparticles have gained considerable importance compared to bulk counterparts due to their unique properties. Due to their high surface to volume ratio and high reactivity, metallic and metal-oxide nanostructures have shown great potential applications. Among them, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) have gained tremendous attention attributed to their unique properties such as low toxicity, biocompatibility, simplicity, easy fabrication, and environmental friendly. Remarkably, ZnONPs exhibit optical, physical, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. These nanoparticles have been applied in various fields such as in biomedicine, biosensors, electronics, food, cosmetic industries, textile, agriculture and environment. The synthesis of ZnONPs can be performed by chemical, physical and biological methods. Although the chemical and physical methods suffer from some disadvantages such as the involvement of high temperature and pressure conditions, high cost and not environmentally friendly, the green synthesis of ZnONPs offers a promising substitute to these conventional methods. On that account, the microbial mediated synthesis of ZnONPs is clean, eco-friendly, nontoxic and biocompatible method. This paper reviews the microbial synthesis of ZnONPs, parameters used for the optimization process and their physicochemical properties. The potential applications of ZnONPs in biomedical, agricultural and environmental fields as well as their toxic aspects on human beings and animals have been reviewed.

Ring Vibrations to Sense Anionic Ibuprofen in Aqueous Solution as Revealed by Resonance Raman

We unravel the potentialities of resonance Raman spectroscopy to detect ibuprofen in diluted aqueous solutions. In particular, we exploit a fully polarizable quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methodology based on fluctuating charges coupled to molecular dynamics (MD) in order to take into account the dynamical aspects of the solvation phenomenon. Our findings, which are discussed in light of a natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, reveal that a selective enhancement of the Raman signal due to the normal mode associated with the C-C stretching in the ring, νC=C, can be achieved by properly tuning the incident wavelength, thus facilitating the recognition of ibuprofen in water samples.

On the Origins of Some Spectroscopic Properties of "Purple Iron" (the Tetraoxoferrate(VI) Ion) and Its Pourbaix Safe-Space

In this work, the authors attempt to interpret the visible, infrared and Raman spectra of ferrate(VI) by means of theoretical physical-inorganic chemistry and historical highlights in this field of interest. In addition, the sacrificial decomposition of ferrate(VI) during water treatment will also be discussed together with a brief mention of how Rayleigh scattering caused by the decomposition of Fe^VIO₄²⁻ may render absorbance readings erroneous. This work is not a compendium of all the instrumental methods of analysis which have been deployed to identify ferrate(VI) or to study its plethora of reactions, but mention will be made of the relevant techniques (e.g., Mössbauer Spectroscopy amongst others) which support and advance this overall discourse at appropriate junctures, without undue elaboration on the foundational physics of these techniques.

Quantification of nickel, cobalt, and manganese concentration using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy

Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy is one of the most effective, inexpensive, flexible, and simplest analytical techniques to measure species concentration in the liquid phase. It has a wide range of applications such as wastewater treatment, dye degradation, colloidal nanoparticle characterization. It is used in almost every spectroscopy laboratory for routine analysis or research. In the present study, a feasibility study was carried out to find the application of UV-Vis spectroscopy for onsite measurement of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium as a replacement for the conventional method to measure the concentrations of these elements in battery and other applicable industries. Samples with different concentrations of individual elements and composites were prepared and analyzed using an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. Based on the obtained results, mathematical relationships between concentration and absorbance were defined. The calculated concentration of different elements using the developed relationships was compared with the measured concentration using ICP-OES to find any deviation between the two. The effect of various parameters such as concentration, path length, number of elements in the solution, density, and pH was analyzed to verify the feasibility. The obtained results show that this technique can be effectively used to measure the concentration of nickel and cobalt with high accuracy.

Simultaneous Determination of Metal Ions in Zinc Sulfate Solution Using UV-Vis Spectrometry and SPSE-XGBoost Method

Excessive discharge of heavy metal ions will aggravate environment pollution and threaten human health. Thus, it is of significance to real-time detect metal ions and control discharge in the metallurgical wastewater. We developed an accurate and rapid approach based on the singular perturbation spectrum estimator and extreme gradient boosting (SPSE-XGBoost) algorithms to simultaneously determine multi-metal ion concentrations by UV–vis spectrometry. In the approach, the spectral data is expanded by multi-order derivative preprocessing, and then, the sensitive feature bands in each spectrum are extracted by feature importance (VI score) ranking. Subsequently, the SPSE-XGBoost model are trained to combine multi-derivative features and to predict ion concentrations. The experimental results indicate that the developed “Expand-Extract-Combine” strategy can not only overcome problems of background noise and spectral overlapping but also mine the deeper spectrum information by integrating important features. Moreover, the SPSE-XGBoost strategy utilizes the selected feature subset instead of the full-spectrum for calculation, which effectively improves the computing speed. The comparisons of different data processing methods are conducted. It outcomes that the proposed strategy outperforms other routine methods and can profoundly determine the concentrations of zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel with the lowest RMSEP. Therefore, our developed approach can be implemented as a promising mean for real-time and on-line determination of multi-metal ion concentrations in zinc hydrometallurgy.
