Abstract
Aromatic infrared bands (AIBs) dominate the mid-infrared spectra of many galactic and extragalactic sources. These AIBs are generally attributed to fluorescence emission from aromatic molecules. Unified efforts from experimentalists and theoreticians to assign these AIB features have recently received additional impetus with the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) delivers a mid-IR spectrum with greatly increased sensitivity and spectral resolution. PAHs in space can exist in either neutral or ionic form, absorb UV photons and undergo fragmentation, becoming a rich source of small hydrocarbons. This top-down mechanism of larger PAHs fragmenting into smaller species is of utmost importance in photo-dissociation regions (PDR) in space. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the photo-fragmentation pathways of two astronomically significant PAH cations - corannulene (C20H10) and sumanene (C21H12), which are structural motifs of fullerene C60, to understand their sequential fragmentation pathways. The photo-fragmentation experiments exhibit channels that are significantly different from planar PAHs. The breakdown of the carbon skeleton is found to follow different pathways for C20H10 and C21H12 because of the number and positioning of pentagon rings, yet the most abundant low mass cations produced by these two species are found to be similar. The low mass cations showcased in this work could be of interest due to their possible astronomical detections. For completeness, the qualitative photofragmentation behaviour of dicationic corannulene and sumanene has also been investigated, but the potential energy surface of these dications is beyond the scope of this paper.

Abstract
Corannulene-derived materials have been extensively explored in energy storage and solar cells, however, are rarely documented as emitters in light-emitting sensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to low exciton utilization. Here, we report a family of multi-donor and acceptor (multi-D-A) motifs, TCzPhCor, TDMACPhCor, and TPXZPhCor, using corannulene as the acceptor and carbazole (Cz), 9,10-dihydro-9,10-dimethylacridine (DMAC), and phenoxazine (PXZ) as the donor, respectively. By decorating corannulene with different donors, multiple phosphorescence is realized. Theoretical and photophysical investigations reveal that TCzPhCor shows room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from the lowest-lying T1 ; however, for TDMACPhCor, dual RTP originating from a higher-lying T1 (T1 H ) and a lower-lying T1 (T1 L ) can be observed, while for TPXZPhCor, T1 H -dominated RTP occurs resulting from a stabilized high-energy T1 geometry. Benefiting from the high-temperature sensitivity of TPXZPhCor, high color-resolution temperature sensing is achieved. Besides, due to degenerate S1 and T1 H states of TPXZPhCor, the first corannulene-based solution-processed afterglow OLEDs is investigated. The afterglow OLED with TPXZPhCor shows a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) and a luminance (Lmax ) of 3.3 % and 5167 cd m-2 , respectively, which is one of the most efficient afterglow RTP OLEDs reported to date.

Abstract
We develop an improved stochastic formalism for the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE), based on an exact separation of the effective-interaction W into two parts, W = (W - vW) + vW, where the latter is formally any translationally invariant interaction, vW(r - r'). When optimizing the fit of the exchange kernel vW to W, using a stochastic sampling W, the difference W - vW becomes quite small. Then, in the main BSE routine, this small difference is stochastically sampled. The number of stochastic samples needed for an accurate spectrum is then largely independent of system size. While the method is formally cubic in scaling, the scaling prefactor is small due to the constant number of stochastic orbitals needed for sampling W.

Abstract
We report the introduction of distinct optical properties into organotin sulfide clusters by the attachment of extended polycyclic aromatic organic molecules. This was realized by the reactions of [(RNSn)4S6] (RN = CMe2CH2CMeNNH2) with 3-perylenecarbaldehyde and corannulenecarbaldehyde, respectively. The reaction with the first reactant leads to the formation of two products [(RperylSn)3S4][SnCl3] [1a; Rperyl = CMe2CH2CMeNNCH(C20H11)] and [(RperylSn)3S4Cl] (1b). Structural differences between these two compounds are reflected in their different optical absorption and luminescence behavior, yet in both cases, the main emission is red-shifted relative to 3-perylenecarbaldehyde. The second organic molecule affords the compound [(RcorSn)4Sn2S10] [2; Rcor = CMe2CH2CMeNNCH(C20H9)] with intriguing optical properties, including a broad emission with essentially no shift in λmax compared to corannulenecarbaldehyde. All compounds were obtained as single crystals, and their structures were determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of the highly luminescent compounds were investigated by means of emission and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements.

Abstract
The presence of non-hexagonal rings in the honeycomb carbon arrangement of graphene produces rippled graphene layers with valuable chemical and physical properties. In principle, a bottom-up approach to introducing distortion from planarity of a graphene sheet can be achieved by careful insertion of curved polyaromatic hydrocarbons during the growth of the lattice. Corannulene, the archetype of such non-planar polyaromatic hydrocarbons, can act as an ideal wrinkling motif in 2D carbon nanostructures. Herein we report an electrochemical bottom-up method to obtain egg-box shaped nanographene structures through a polycondensation of corannulene that produces a new conducting layered material. Characterization of this new polymeric material by electrochemistry, spectroscopy, electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), scanning probe microscopy, and laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry provides strong evidence that the anodic polymerization of corannulene, combined with electrochemically induced oxidative cyclodehydrogenations (Scholl reactions), leads to polycorannulene with a wavy graphene-like structure. A bottom-up synthesis of wavy graphene structures obtained through an anodic polymerization process, combined with an electrochemically triggered oxidative cyclodehydrogenation, of the bowl-shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon corannulene.![]()

Abstract
We present a comprehensive study of the most relevant numerical aspects influencing frequencies and intensities in the infrared spectrum of isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) regarding the overestimate of the IR CH-stretching bands. We use naphthalene as benchmark and show the validity of our results to different members of the PAH family. Our analysis relies on widely employed density functional theory methods and second-order vibrational perturbational theory for the computation of vibrational eigenstates. We have focused on the elucidation of the origin of the systematic overestimate of the intensities in the CH-stretching region. To rule out nonfundamental numerical errors, we have initially considered the influence of the electronic basis set and various other parameters on the different stages of the vibrational analysis. In a second stage, we have benchmarked the results of different density functional theory functionals with respect to the aforementioned overestimate taken as the ratio between the most prominent features of the spectrum, the CH-bending and the CH-stretching bands. Our results unambiguously indicate that the long-range correction plays a major role in this spurious numerical issue. More specifically, this phenomenon is due to an incorrect description of the charge distribution (and hence dipole) within the symmetrically relevant CH bonds. Long-range correction specifically remedies this issue. It improves the description of the intensities in the stretching region while at the same time it does not perturb significantly the rest of the spectrum. With respect to the frequencies, we have observed an overall improvement when compared to noncorrected functionals.

Abstract
Modifications in the electronic transitions of a popular 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (boron dipyrromethene, BODIPY) dye caused by quasi-parallel stacking with corannulene (C) were studied by means of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the CAM-B3LYP functional. The effects of the electron-withdrawing (CN) and electron-donating (NH2) substituents at the meso (8) position in the BODIPY core and the corannulene rim position on the character, location, and oscillator strengths (f) of some transitions of complexes were also discussed. To understand better the nature of the transitions, their occupied and virtual orbitals involved into the first electronic transitions as well as the electron density difference plots between excited and ground states of the complexes were investigated. The S0 → S1 transitions of 8H-B/C and 8NH2-B/C complexes have a small admixture of the charge transfer (CT) character in direction from BODIPY to corannulene (B → C). They located at 2.80 and 3.11 eV, respectively, and have f of ∼0.15. The 8CN-B/C complex with a stronger acceptor BODIPY part has the S0 → S1 transition with a higher degree of CT (B → C) at 2.32 eV with f = 0.08. The 8H-B/2NH2-C complex with a stronger donor corannulene part has the S0 → S1 transition with an expressed CT(B → C)-character at 2.58 eV with f = 0.003, whereas the S0 → S2 transition acquires in a some extent the features of the LE(B → B) character. A much interesting situation exists in the case of the 8NH2-B/2CN-C complex. Here we can find both CT (B → C) and CT (C → B) among the first five states. Besides this, different, higher in energy CT states and states delocalized on both molecules were observed.

Abstract
Hydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been proposed to be carriers of the interstellar unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands and the catalysts for formation of H2; spectral characterizations of these species are hence important. We report the infrared (IR) spectrum of mono-hydrogenated corannulene (HC20H10) in solid para-hydrogen (p-H2). In experiments of electron bombardment of a mixture of corannulene and p-H2 during deposition of a matrix at 3.2 K, two groups of spectral lines increased with time during maintenance of the matrix in darkness after deposition. Lines in one group were assigned to the most stable isomer of hydrogenated corannulene, rim-HC20H10, according to the expected chemistry and a comparison with scaled harmonic vibrational wavenumbers and IR intensities predicted with the B3PW91/6-311++G(2d,2p) method. The lines in the other group do not agree with predicted spectra of other HC20H10 isomers and remain unassigned. Alternative hydrogenation was achieved with H atoms produced photochemically in the infrared-induced reaction Cl + H2 (v = 1) → H + HCl in a Cl2/C20H10/p-H2 matrix. With this method, only lines attributable to rim-HC20H10 were observed, indicating that hydrogenation via a quantum-mechanical tunneling mechanism produces preferably the least-energy rim-HC20H10 regardless of similar barrier heights and widths for the formation of rim-HC20H10 and hub-HC20H10. The mechanisms of formation in both experiments are discussed. The bands near 3.3 and 3.4 µm of rim-HC20H10 agree with the UIR emission bands in position and relative intensity, but other bands do not match satisfactorily with the UIR bands.
