Silica-Derived Nanostructured Electrode Materials for ORR, OER, HER, CO2RR Electrocatalysis, and Energy Storage Applications: A Review

Silica-derived nanostructured catalysts (SDNCs) are a class of materials synthesized using nanocasting and templating techniques, which involve the sacrificial removal of a silica template to generate highly porous nanostructured materials. The surface of these nanostructures is functionalized with a variety of electrocatalytically active metal and non-metal atoms. SDNCs have attracted considerable attention due to their unique physicochemical properties, tunable electronic configuration, and microstructure. These properties make them highly efficient catalysts and promising electrode materials for next generation electrocatalysis, energy conversion, and energy storage technologies. The continued development of SDNCs is likely to lead to new and improved electrocatalysts and electrode materials. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the development of SDNCs for electrocatalysis and energy storage applications. It analyzes 337,061 research articles published in the Web of Science (WoS) database up to December 2022 using the keywords "silica", "electrocatalysts", "ORR", "OER", "HER", "HOR", "CO2RR", "batteries", and "supercapacitors". The review discusses the application of SDNCs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and thermal energy storage applications. It concludes by discussing the advantages and limitations of SDNCs for energy applications.

Metal Nanoclusters Synthesized in Alkaline Ethylene Glycol: Mechanism and Application

The "unprotected" metal and alloy nanoclusters (UMCs) prepared by the alkaline ethylene glycol method, which are stabilized with simple ions and solvent molecules, have the advantages of a small particle size, a narrow size distribution, good stability, highly efficient preparation, easy separation, surface modification and transfer between different phases. They can be composited with diverse materials to prepare catalytic systems with controllable structures, providing an effective means of studying the different factors' effects on the catalytic properties separately. UMCs have been widely used in the development of high-performance catalysts for a variety of functional systems. This paper will review the research progress on the formation mechanism of the unprotected metal nanoclusters, exploring the structure-function relationship of metal nanocluster catalysts and the preparation of excellent metal catalysts using the unprotected metal nanoclusters as building blocks or starting materials. A principle of the influence of carriers, ligands and modifiers in metal nanocluster catalysts on the catalytic properties is proposed.

A Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Hierarchically Organized Carbon/TiO2 Monoliths with Ordered Mesopores

Sol-gel processing combined with soft templating and gelation-induced phase separation is very sensitive to the precursor sol composition. In this work we present a straightforward synthesis towards hierarchically structured, macroporous carbon/titania monoliths with ordered mesopores derived from resorcinol/formaldehyde monoliths and a glycolated titanium precursor. We demonstrate the influence of various reaction solvents, where diol-based media and the proportion of the catalyst seem to be essential in controlling spinodal decomposition, obtaining similar monolithic structures under different synthesis conditions. Based on these observations, we further homogeneously incorporated TiO₂ into the carbon structure by an in situ synthesis approach, obtaining structural features similar to pure carbon materials with surface areas of about 400 m²  g^-1 , periodically arranged mesopores with a mean distance of 10-11 nm and cellular macroporosity.

Pt nanocluster size effects in the hydrogen evolution reaction: approaching the theoretical maximum activity

Hydrogen production from electrocatalytic water splitting in electrolyzers is a key process to store excess electric energy produced from intermittent renewable energy sources. For proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, carbon supported platinum particles exhibit the highest rates for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); however, high Pt costs limit the wide spread use of this technology. By employing a graphene layer grown on a Ru(0001) single crystal as a template for Pt nanocluster (NC) growth, we studied the dependence of the HER activity on the NC size using NCs of different sizes. We provide clear quantitative experimental evidence for a volcano-like relationship between the HER activity and the NC size which has been missing so far. For Pt NCs with very low sizes below 2 nm, we found stunningly improved exchange HER current densities. The highest exchange current density was observed for Pt NCs with an average size of ca. 38 atoms. These Pt₃₈ NCs do not only surpass the Pt-mass-specific activity of commercial Pt electrode materials by well above three orders of magnitude, also their exchange current density is located close to the maximum exchange current density for the HER predicted theoretically for transition metal surfaces. The present work provides a strong stimulus for future research towards technically feasible Pt NC catalysts with cluster sizes in the range of few tens of Pt atoms.

Effect of Chemical Charging/Discharging on Plasmonic Behavior of Silver Metal Nanoparticles Prepared using Citrate-Stabilized Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots

The thermodynamics and kinetics of the chemical and electrochemical charging of a catalyst surface are very important to understand its applicability as a catalyst material, particularly in redox catalysis. Through the present study, we hereby communicate the results obtained from our detailed investigations related to the effect of chemical charging on the plasmonic behavior of silver metal nanoparticles (Ag MNPs) as redox catalysts. Two different batches of Ag MNPs were prepared through thermally assisted chemical reduction of silver ions. The difference in these batches was the use or not of citrate-capped cadmium selenide quantum dots (Q-CdSe) for the reduction of solution-phase silver ions to their colloidal plasmonic phase. The charge on the surfaces of the Ag MNPs was varied by the chemical electron injection method by using BH₄^- ions from a NaBH₄ solution. The processes of charging and discharging were monitored by using UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. The impact of the concentration of the reductant on the charging and discharging processes was also investigated. The Ag MNPs were also tested for their voltammetric response, wherein it was observed that it was more difficult to oxidize the Ag MNPs prepared with Q-CdSe seeds than to oxidize Ag MNPs prepared without Q-CdSe particles. Our results demonstrate that Q-CdSe seeds not only enhance the redox catalytic activity of Ag MNPs but also provide stability towards polarization of their plasmonic behavior.

Recent trends in nanomaterials applications in environmental monitoring and remediation

Environmental pollution is one of the greatest problems that the world is facing today, and it is increasing with every passing year and causing grave and irreparable damage to the earth. Nanomaterials, because of their novel physical and chemical characteristics, have great promise to combat environment pollution. Nanotechnology is being used to devise pollution sensor. A variety of materials in their nano form like iron, titanium dioxide, silica, zinc oxide, carbon nanotube, dendrimers, polymers, etc. are increasingly being used to make the air clean, to purify water, and to decontaminate soil. Nanotechnology is also being used to make renewable energy cheaper and more efficient. The use of nanotechnology in agriculture sector will reduce the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals and thus will reduce the load of chemical pollutant. While remediating environment pollution with nanomaterials, it should also be monitored that these materials do not contribute further degradation of the environment. This review will focus broadly on the applications of nanotechnology in the sustainable development with particular emphasis on renewable energy, air-, water-, and soil-remediation. Besides, the review highlights the recent developments in various types of nanomaterials and nanodevices oriented toward pollution monitoring and remediation.
