Abstract
A series of novel V-shaped quinoxaline, [1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine and [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine push–pull derivatives with 2,4′-biphenylene linker were designed and their electrochemical, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties were investigated. [1,2,5]Oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine is the stronger electron-withdrawing fragment as shown by electrochemical, and photophysical data. All compounds are emissive in a solid-state (from the cyan to red region of the spectrum) and quinoxaline derivatives are emissions in DCM solution. It has been found that quinoxaline derivatives demonstrate important solvatochromism and extra-large Stokes shifts, characteristic of twisted intramolecular charge transfer excited state as well as aggregation induced emission. The experimental conclusions have been justified by theoretical (TD-)DFT calculations.

Abstract
Fine tuning and switching of nonlinear optical response of ferrocene chromophores has been an area of considerable significance as evidenced by a large number of reports in the current literature. In this personal account, we present linear/nonlinear behavior and structure-activity relationships of several classes of donor-π-acceptor designs using organometallic and organic materials, developed by our research group during the last decade. The results especially the electronic absorption spectral and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering have been supported by theoretical calculations. Exploiting the redox behavior of ferrocene donor, we have demonstrated switching of quadratic nonlinear optical responses with reversible redox chemistry, which is a useful attribute of nonlinear optical materials. Based on the ease in synthesis, structure diversification and structure-based large and switchable second-order optical nonlinearity, these materials are potential candidates for electro-optic applications.

Abstract
A simple semiempiric phenomenological approach is developed for quantifying the solvent effect on the absorption and emission properties of BODIPYs. It is based on a new rule describing the linear relationship between the difference (Stokes shift) and the sum (double Gibbs free energy of electron transfer) for absorption and emission wavenumbers derived from a combination of solvent functions of Liptay theory. This rule is correspondent to changes of dipole moments in the ground and excited states. High reliability and advantages of the developed approach in comparison with traditional methods of the analysis of the solvatochromism based on Dimroth-Reichard and Lippert-Mataga solvent scales are illustrated for selected BODIPYs exhibiting positive, negative, and near-zero solvatochromism.

Abstract
A series of four V-shaped methylpyrimidinium salts bearing diphenylamino-electron-donating groups appended at various pyrimidine positions were designed. These chromophores were obtained by regioselective N(1) monomethylation by methyl methanesulfonate of the pyrimidine core. Linear optical properties were studied experimentally and electronic properties were further completed by (TD)-DFT calculations. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were also studied using electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) method in chloroform, and all pyrimidinium salts exhibited μβ0 >1000×10-48 esu. The 2,4-disubstituted pyrimidinium core is preferred over 4,6-disubstitution as it enhances the NLO response and increases the dipole moment. (E,E)-2,4-Bis[4-(diphenylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyrimidin-1-ium methanesulfonate appears to be the best NLO-phore in chloroform in the series (μβ0 =2500×10-48 esu) and a figure of merit μβ0 /MW=3.4 10-48 esu mol g-1 .

Abstract
A series of four D-(π-Pt-π-A)2 new V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes bearing a diphenylpyranylidene ligand as a pro-aromatic donor group (D) and various electron-attracting groups (A) separated by platinum bis-acetylide fragments have been synthesized, characterized and studied for their electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The nonlinear optical properties of these complexes have been determined by using the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) generation technique, and their optical properties have been rationalized by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on a range-separated hybrid. All complexes display positive μβ0 values. In addition, the second-order NLO responses of the complexes could be easily modulated by incorporating various end-capped electron-attracting groups, namely malononitrile, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine and pyrimidinium. Remarkably, complex 7 bearing a pyrimidinium fragment displays the highest μβ0 value among all the complexes of this series. Its NLO response is twice as high as that of the mononuclear analogue complex RD2, which has been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
In this research, the BODIPY molecule was selected; and based on its structure, using a different number of BODIPY molecules connected to each other, novel oligomers with significant electrical and optical properties were designed. After structural optimization, the frequency analysis and cohesive energy calculations were done to ensure the oligomers' stability. The electronic properties of the designed oligomers were studied; and it was shown that by increasing the numbers of BODIPY molecules in designed structures, their Eg was narrowed. Finally, it was shown that by increasing the numbers of BODIPY molecules in oligomers, a great improvement in optical properties such as increasing the number of absorption lines and intensity of them was observed. Among the designed oligomers, two di- and tri-BODIPY molecules have substantial optical properties with intense absorption lines in visible and near-infrared regions.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of a new series of styryl-based push-pull dyes containing a free amino group and their Schiff base derivatives. The dyes include the dicyanomethylene group as an acceptor and different para-substituted alkylamines as donors. Morever as a proton-sensitive group a pyridin-2-yl substituent was attached to the para-position of the phenyl moiety in both series of compounds. The photophysical properties of the dyes were examined in various solvents with different polarities and showed absorption in the visible region and green-red emission with low quantum yields. The absorption and the emission maxima were shifted bathocromically by increasing the solvent's polarity. However, there was no correlation with the polarity parameters of the solvents. The pH-sensitive properties of all prepared Schiff bases were examined against TBAOH in DMSO, via deprotonation of the OH group in the salicylidene moiety and their reverse protonation was also investigated using TFA. The Schiff bases exhibited a bathochromic shift upon the addition of TBAOH to their solutions in DMSO. Therefore, they showed potential to be utilized as colorimetric and luminescence pH sensors. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of the dyes were measured by the electric field-induced second harmonic (EFISH) generation method. The highest μβ values were obtained for the dyes bearing the julolidine donor as 1430 × 10-48 esu (for free amino derivative) and 1950 × 10-48 esu (for Schiff base derivative), respectively. The structural and electronic properties of the dyes as well as their NLO properties were further studied using DFT calculations. The thermal stabilities of all dyes were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The TGA data showed that all dyes were thermally stable up to 250 °C.

Abstract
BOPHY (BPY) and BODIPY (BDY) dye bearing benzyl group (Bn) at 4,4' and 2,6 position respectively were synthesized and characterized. The fluorescence decay measurements were performed which reveal that benzyl BOPHY (Bn-BPY) has shorter fluorescence lifetime compared to benzyl BODIPY (Bn-BDY). The difference in transition dipole moment is found to be 6.93 and 11.3 D for Bn-BDY and Bn-BPY respectively in toluene. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) plot shows Bn-BDY is more polarised compared to Bn-BPY. The nonlinear optical (NLO) property was evaluated using Z-scan measurement. The molecular electronic arrangement of Bn-BPY significantly affects the nonlinear absorption properties resulting into reverse saturable absorption (nonlinear absorption coefficient β = 0.256 × 10-11 m/W). In contrast, the Bn-BDY displays saturable absorption character. The calculated third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) value is 12.23 × 10-13 esu and 2.49 × 10-13 esu for Bn-BDY and Bn-BPY respectively. The power limiting behaviour of Bn-BPY displays limiting threshold energy around 70 Jcm-2 with clamped output at ~35 Jcm-2.

Abstract
Hybrid meso BODIPY dyes are synthesized and their linear and non-linear optical properties are studied. Time-resolved fluorescence lifetime decay is found to be identical for all dyes irrespective of meso substituents. The Z-scan experiment performed to calculate the nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ3). Global hybrid (B3LYP and BHHLYP) and range-separated hybrid (CAM-B3LYP) functional with the basis set 6-311++G(d,p) was employed to determine the theoretical linear and non-linear optical properties. The computed β0 value of all the three dyes was found to be superior to that of urea (βo = 0.371 × 10-30 esu). Introduction of meso substituent directly affects the polarizability and second-order hyperpolarizability of the dyes. Thermal and reorientational effect of the investigated NLOphoric dyes were studied.

Abstract
In this paper, we present the third harmonic generation response of Znq2 (Bis-(8-hydroxyquinolinato)zinc), Cuq2 (8-Hydroxyquinoline copper(II)), and Alq3 (Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum) organometallic compounds. An experiment was conducted for s and p polarizations of incident beam, using the Maker fringes technique. The third order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) was estimated using the Kubodera and Kobayashi comparative model, on the grounds that presented compounds exhibit high linear absorption of the generated third harmonic wavelength (355 nm). These complexes were deposited as thin films using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. Investigated complexes vary in terms of the coordination center and number of quinoline ligands, which visibly influence their nonlinear response. The global hybrid B3LYP functional with the basis set 6-31G(d) was used in computing the linear and non-linear optical properties. The computed γtot value (8765.36 × 10−36 esu for Cuq2) is superior to that of methylene blue (γ = 32.00 × 10−36 esu). The calculated theoretical values were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

Molecular and NLO Properties of Red Fluorescent Coumarins - DFT Computations Using Long-Range Separated and Conventional Functionals. J Fluoresc 2018; 29:241-253. Abstract
Comparative study of nonlinear optical properties of red fluorescent coumarins was carried out with density functional theory based ab initio method using the popular global hybrid (GH) and range separated hybrid (RSH) functionals and correlated with the spectroscopic values. The GHs - M06 L, PBE1PBE, M06, BHHLYP, M062X and M06HF and RSHs - HISSbPBE, wB97, wB97X, HSEH1PBE, CAM-B3LYP and wB97XD in combination with the double zeta basis function 6-311 + G(d,p) were used. The computed polarizability (α0), hyperpolarizability of the first order (β0) and second order (γ) computed by the RSHs are closer to the spectroscopic values compared to GHs. Polarizabilities computed with the functionals BHHLYP and M06-2X are closer with the spectroscopic values. Incorporation of additional cyano group enhances the NLO response. An increase in electrophilic nature contributed from the reduced orbital band gap culminating an increase in α0, β0, and γ in all the cases. The NLO response was found to be highly solvent dependent that is the polarity of the micro environment created by the solvents. To understand the agreement and accuracy among the NLO parameters obtained from the selected DFT functionals and the spectroscopic values, the mean absolute error (MAE) and vibrational contribution parameters are presented. Two photon absorption (TPA) cross section depends upon the molecular structure where π-framework is an important factor rather than number of acceptors.

Abstract
Increased interest has been devoted to the discovery of multifunctional materials with desirable properties, as continuous performance enhancement of various devices mainly depends on high-performance materials. Now, density functional theory has become a powerful tool to design new materials and rationalize experimental observations. In this work, we explored the photophysical properties origin of chiral boron heptaaryldipyrromethene (heptaaryl-BODIPY), which has charming optoelectronic properties. At the same time, we designed the other five compounds on the basis of heptaaryl-BODIPY. The simulated electronic absorption and emission spectra of heptaaryl-BODIPY are in agreement with experimental ones, allowing us to reliably assign its electronic transition property. The designed compound 6 shows remarkably large first hyperpolarizability value up to 82.78×10-30 esu. For this kind of compounds, their NLO response values associate with not only position but also electronic nature of substituent groups. Moreover, electron reorganization energies of compounds 1-4 are comparable to tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminium(III) which is a typical electron transport material. Intriguingly, the studied compounds are the excellent fluorescent probe materials from the standpoint of large Stokes shift and high emission efficiency. Our work enables an opportunity for understanding the relationship between microelectronic structure and macroscopic performance of BODIPY derivatives.

Abstract
The present work describes the one-pot synthesis and electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of dipolar π-delocalized Ru(ii) dialkynyl complexes. The eight new asymmetrical D-π-Ru-π-A push-pull chromophores incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D) and formaldehyde, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine or pyrimidinium as electron-attracting groups (A) separated by ruthenium bis-acetylide fragments and π-conjugated linkers. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of all eight complexes were determined by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique (operating at 1907 nm), and were compared to those of their purely organic analogs. All investigated compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased for the complexes due to the presence of ruthenium in the π-conjugated core. The second-order NLO response could also be easily modulated by changing the nature of alkynyl substituents. The most promising ruthenium complexes 7 and 8 of the series with the pyrimidinium fragment displayed μβ values of 14 000 × 10-48 esu. The effect of structural modifications on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes was also studied. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the ruthenium center of the push-pull σ-dialkynyl complexes was investigated by combining experimental and theoretical data.

Abstract
In this article, we describe the synthesis, redox characteristics, and linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of seven new unsymmetrical push-pull diacetylide platinum-based complexes. These D-π-Pt-π-A complexes incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D), diazine rings as electron-withdrawing groups (A), and various aromatic fragments (styryl or thienylvinyl) as π-linkers separating the platinum diacetylide unit from the donor and the acceptor groups. This is one of the first examples of push-pull chromophores incorporating a platinum center in the π-conjugated core. The NLO properties of these complexes were compared with those of their purely organic analogues. All compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased upon methylation of the pyrimidine fragment. However, this increase was even more significant in the complexes due to the presence of platinum in the π-conjugated core. The effects of the linker on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes are also discussed. In addition, DFT calculations were performed in order to gain further insight into the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the platinum center.

Abstract
In this work, we reported the geometrical structures, electronic and spectral properties of the carborane-containing BODIPYs complexes using the density functional theory calculations. In two structures, the calculated main bond lengths and bond angels of structural framework are consistent with X-ray experiment, and the two BODIPYs complexes are thermodynamically and kinetically stable. The strongest DOS band is mainly dominated by the BB and BH σ-bonds of carborane fragment, whereas the π-type MOs on the pyrromethene fragment contribute to the high-energy DOS bands. Analysis of the AdNDP chemical bonding indicates that the carborane cage can be stabilized by eleven delocalized 3c2e and two delocalized 4c2e σ-bonds, while the pyrromethene fragment corresponds to five delocalized 3c2e π-bonds. In addition, the main characteristic peaks of the two simulated IR spectra for the BODIPYs complexes are properly assigned. Hopefully, all these results will be helpful for understanding the electronic structures, and further stimulate the study on the biological and medical applications.

Abstract
The synthesis of a series of push-pull derivatives bearing triphenylamine electron-donating group, cyclopenta[c]thiophen-4,6-dione electron acceptor and various π-linkers including (hetero)aromatic fragments is reported. All target chromophores with systematically varied π-linker structure were further investigated by electrochemistry, absorption measurements, and EFISH experiments in conjunction with DFT calculations. Based on electrochemical and photophysical measurements, when a polarizable 2,5-thienylene moiety is embedded into the chromophore π-backbone the highest intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is observed. Benzene, pyrimidine, and pyridazine derivatives exhibit lower polarizability and extent of the ICT across these π-linkers. The elongation of the π-conjugated system via additional ethenylene linker results in a significant reduction of the HOMO-LUMO gap and an enhancement of the NLO response. Whereas it does not significantly influence electrochemical and linear optical properties, the orientation of the pyrimidine ring seems to be a key parameter on the μβ value due to significant variation of the dipolar moment (μ) value. In 2a and 2c, pyrimidine is oriented to behave as an acceptor and thus generate dipolar molecule with μ above 5 D, whereas in 2b and 2d ground state dipole moment is significantly reduced. This study seems to indicate a high aromaticity of pyrimidine and pyridazine derivatives, close to the benzene analogues and significantly higher than thiophene analogues.

Abstract
BORICO dyes with N, N-diethyl as a strong donor and BF2 complexed iminocoumarin six member core as strong acceptor are investigated as an efficient non linear optical chromophores. Extended π-conjugation over iminocoumarin moiety is useful to make ICT character of BORICO dyes more significant and is established on the scale of Generalised Mulliken Hush analysis scale. Bond length alternation and bond order alternation values for three BORICO chromophores estimates the cyanine like framework for optimal non linear optical response. The frontier molecular orbital diagrams obtained from density functional theory calculations shows that there is charge transfer from donor to accepter as well as effective overlap between them making the basis for optimal NLO response of BORICO chromophores. The theoretical values of linear and non linear optical responses for three BORICO NLOphores obtained by using three different functionals B3LYP, CAMB3LYP and BHandHLYP with 6-311+g(d,p) basis set are quite consistent for the values of static dipole moment (μ), linear polarizability (α) and first hyperpolarizability (β). However in case of the γ values calculation, compare to the similar values obtained by CAMB3LYP and BHandHLYP functionals, B3LYP overestimates the same. The vibrational motions play decisive role in the overall non linear optical properties of BORICO chromophores.

Abstract
A series of push-pull BODIPYs bearing multiple electron-donating and electron-acceptor groups were synthesized regioselectively from 2,3,5,6,8-pentachloro-BODIPY, and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography. The influence of the push-pull substituents on the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of BODIPYs was investigated. Bathochromic shifts were observed for both absorbance (up to 37 nm) and emission (up to 60 nm) in different solvents upon introduction of the push-pull moieties. DFT calculations, consistent with the spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetry studies, show decreased HOMO-LUMO energy gaps upon the installation of the push-pull moieties. BODIPY 7 bearing thienyl groups on the 2 and 6 positions showed the largest λmax for both absorption (635-653 nm) and emission (706-707 nm), but also the lowest fluorescence quantum yields. All BODIPYs were nontoxic in the dark (IC50 > 200 μM) and showed low phototoxicity (IC50 > 100 μM, 1.5 J/cm2) toward human HEp2 cells. Despite the relatively low fluorescence quantum yields, the push-pull BODIPYS were effective for cell imaging, readily accumulating within cells and localizing mainly in the ER and Golgi. Our structure-property studies can guide future design of functionalized BODIPYs for various applications, including bioimaging and in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract
Fluorescent materials are widely used in biological and material applications as probes for imaging or sensing; however, their customization is usually complicated without the support of an organic chemistry laboratory. Here, we present a straightforward method for the customization of BODIPY cores, which are among the most commonly used fluorescent probes. The method is based on the formation of a new C-C bond through Friedel-Crafts electrophilic aromatic substitution carried out at room temperature. The method presented can be used to obtain completely customized fluorescent materials in one or two steps from commercially available compounds. Examples of the preparation of fluorescent materials for cell staining and functionalization of silica colloids are also presented.
