Novel enantiopure cyclopentadienyl Ti(IV) oximato compounds as potential anticancer agents. J Inorg Biochem 2016; 156:22-34. Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of new enantiopure cyclopentadienyl titanium oximato compounds (S,R)-[(η(5)-C5H5)Ti{к(2)NO,(R)NH·HCl}Cl2] (R=Ph (phenyl) 1a·HCl, Bn (benzyl) 1b·HCl, 2-pic (2-picolyl) 1c·HCl), (S,R)-[(η(5)-C5H5)TiCl2{к(2)NO,(Ph)NH}] (1a) and (S,R)-[(η(5)-C5H5)2TiCl{к(2)NO,(R)NH}] (R=Ph 2a, Bn 2b, 2-pic 2c), along with studies on their behavior in D2O at different pD values are reported. The structure of previously described ammonium-oxime (2S,5R)-{NOH,(Bn)NH·HCl} (b·HCl) and novel titanium derivative 1a have been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The effect of the compounds on cytotoxicity, cell adhesion and migration of the androgen-independent prostate cancer PC-3 cells has been assessed. Compounds 2b and 2c are more cytotoxic than additive doses of titanocene dichloride and free oxime proligand, probing the synergistic effect of these novel compounds. The cytotoxicity of 2b and 2c has been further evaluated against human renal Caki-1, colon DLD-1 and triple negative breast MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. The activity found for 2c on PC-3 and Caki-1 is higher than that of highly active Titanocene Y (bis-[(p-methoxybenzyl)cyclopentadienyl]titanium(IV) dichloride), while showing selectivity against renal cancer when compared to a non-tumorigenic human renal (HEK-293T) cell line. Compounds 2b and especially 2c are apoptotic in Caki-1 cancer cell lines. Cell adhesion and wound-healing assays confirmed that derivatives 1c·HCl, 2b and 2c affect the adhesion and migration patterns of the PC-3 cell line. Interactions of the novel compounds with plasmid (pBR322) DNA have also been studied, showing that the oximato Ti(IV) derivatives have a weak or no interaction with DNA at physiological pH.

Six-coordinate high-spin iron(ii) complexes with bidentate PN ligands based on 2-aminopyridine - new Fe(ii) spin crossover systems. Dalton Trans 2014; 43:11152-64. Abstract
Several new octahedral iron(ii) complexes of the type [Fe(PN(R)-Ph)2X2] (X = Cl, Br; R = H, Me) containing bidentate PN(R)-Ph (R = H, Me) (1a,b) ligands based on 2-aminopyridine were prepared. (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization studies confirmed in all cases their high spin nature at room temperature with magnetic moments very close to 4.9μB reflecting the expected four unpaired d-electrons in all these compounds. While in the case of the PN(H)-Ph ligand an S = 2 to S = 0 spin crossover was observed at low temperatures, complexes with the N-methylated analog PN(Me)-Ph retain an S = 2 spin state also at low temperatures. Thus, [Fe(PN(H)-Ph)2X2] (2a,3a) and [Fe(PN(Me)-Ph)2X2] (2b,3b) adopt different geometries. In the first case a cis-Cl,P,N-arrangement seems to be most likely, as supported by various experimental data derived from (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, UV/Vis, Raman, and ESI-MS as well as DFT and TDDFT calculations, while in the case of the PN(Me)-Ph ligand a trans-Cl,P,N-configuration is adopted. The latter is also confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In contrast to [Fe(PN(Me)-Ph)2X2] (2b,3b), [Fe(PN(H)-Ph)2X2] (2a,3a) is labile and undergoes rearrangement reactions. In CH3OH, the diamagnetic dicationic complex [Fe(PN(H)-Ph)3](2+) (5) is formed via the intermediacy of cis-P,N-[Fe(κ(2)-P,N-PN(H)-Ph)2(κ(1)-P-PN(H)-Ph)(X)](+) (4a,b) where one PN ligand is coordinated in a κ(1)-P-fashion. In CH3CN the diamagnetic dicationic complex cis-N,P,N-[Fe(PN(H)-Ph)2(CH3CN)2](2+) (6) is formed as a major isomer where the two halide ligands are replaced by CH3CN.

A complete series of halocarbonyl molybdenum PNP pincer complexes - Unexpected differences between NH and NMe spacers. J Organomet Chem 2014; 760:74-83. Abstract
In the present study a complete series of seven-coordinate neutral halocarbonyl Mo(II) complexes of the type [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2X2] (X = I, Br, Cl, F), featuring the new PNP pincer ligand N,N'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-N,N'-methyl-2,6-diaminopyridine (PNPMe-Ph), were prepared and fully characterized. The synthesis of these complexes was accomplished by different methodologies depending on the halide ligands. For X = I and Br, [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2I2] and [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2Br2] were obtained by reacting [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)3] with stoichiometric amounts of I2 and Br2, respectively. Alternatively, these complexes were obtained upon treatment of [MoX2(CO)3(CH3CN)2] (X = I, Br) with 1 equiv. of PNPMe-Ph. On the other hand, in the case of X = Cl, [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2Cl2] was afforded by the reaction of [Mo(CO)4(μ-Cl)Cl]2 with 1 equiv. of PNPMe-Ph. The equivalent procedure also worked for X = Br. Finally, addition of 1 equiv. of 1-fluoro-2,4,6-trimethylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate to [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)3] yielded the analogous fluorine complex [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2F2]. The modification of the ligand scaffold by introducing a Me group instead of H changed the properties of the PNP-Ph ligand significantly. While in the present case exclusively neutral seven-coordinate complexes of the type [Mo(PNPMe-Ph)(CO)2X2] were obtained, with the parent PNP-Ph ligand, i.e., featuring NH spacers, cationic seven-coordinate complexes of the type [Mo(PNP-Ph)(CO)3X]X were afforded. DFT calculations indicated that the reactions are under thermodynamic control. The structures of representative complexes were determined by X-ray single crystal analyses.
