Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation by MnOx /C: In Situ Catalyst Formation, Carbon Substrate Variations, and Direct O2 /CO2 Monitoring by Membrane-Inlet Mass Spectrometry

Controllable Anchoring of Graphitic Carbon Nitride on MnO2 Nanoarchitectures for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

The design and fabrication of eco-friendly and cost-effective (photo)electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key research goal for a proper management of water splitting to address the global energy crisis. In this work, we focus on the preparation of supported MnO2/graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) OER (photo)electrocatalysts by means of a novel preparation strategy. The proposed route consists of the plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) of MnO2 nanoarchitectures on porous Ni scaffolds, the anchoring of controllable g-CN amounts by an amenable electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process, and the ultimate thermal treatment in air. The inherent method versatility and flexibility afforded defective MnO2/g-CN nanoarchitectures, featuring a g-CN content and nano-organization tunable as a function of EPD duration and the used carbon nitride precursor. Such a modulation had a direct influence on OER functional performances, which, for the best composite system, corresponded to an overpotential of 430 mV at 10 mA/cm2, a Tafel slope of ≈70 mV/dec, and a turnover frequency of 6.52 × 10-3 s-1, accompanied by a very good time stability. The present outcomes, comparing favorably with previous results on analogous systems, were rationalized on the basis of the formation of type-II MnO2/g-CN heterojunctions, and yield valuable insights into this class of green (photo)electrocatalysts for end uses in solar-to-fuel conversion and water treatment.

Rhenium-Based Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Due to the contamination and global warming problems, it is necessary to search for alternative environmentally friendly energy sources. In this area, hydrogen is a promising alternative. Hydrogen is even more promising, when it is obtained through water electrolysis operated with renewable energy sources. Among the possible devices to perform electrolysis, proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers appear as the most promising commercial systems for hydrogen production in the coming years. However, their massification is affected by the noble metals used as electrocatalysts in their electrodes, with high commercial value: Pt at the cathode where the hydrogen evolution reaction occurs (HER) and Ru/Ir at the anode where the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) happens. Therefore, to take full advantage of the PEM technology for green H2 production and build up a mature PEM market, it is imperative to search for more abundant, cheaper, and stable catalysts, reaching the highest possible activities at the lowest overpotential with the longest stability under the harsh acidic conditions of a PEM. In the search for new electrocatalysts and considering the predictions of a Trasatti volcano plot, rhenium appears to be a promising candidate for HER in acidic media. At the same time, recent studies provide evidence of its potential as an OER catalyst. However, some of these reports have focused on chemical and photochemical water splitting and have not always considered acidic media. This review summarizes rhenium-based electrocatalysts for water splitting under acidic conditions: i.e., potential candidates as cathode materials. In the various sections, we review the mechanism concepts of electrocatalysis, evaluation methods, and the different rhenium-based materials applied for the HER in acidic media. As rhenium is less common for the OER, we included a section about its use in chemical and photochemical water oxidation and as an electrocatalyst under basic conditions. Finally, concluding remarks and perspectives are given about rhenium for water splitting.

Rapid wet-chemical oxidative activation of graphite felt electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries

To boost the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries, modification of the classically used felt electrodes is required to enable higher cycling performance and longer life cycles. Alternative approaches to the standard thermal oxidation procedure such as wet chemical oxidation are promising to reduce the thermal budget and thus the cost of the activation procedure. In this work we report a rapid 1 hour activation procedure in an acidified KMnO₄ solution. We show that the reported modification process of the felt electrodes results in an increase in surface area, density of oxygenated surface functionalities as well as electrolyte wettability, as demonstrated by N₂-physisorption, XPS, Raman spectroscopy as well as contact angle measurements. The activation process enables battery cycling at remarkably high current densities up to 400 mA cm⁻². Stable cycling at 400 mA cm⁻² over 30 cycles confirms promising stability of the reported activation procedure.

A mild reduction of Co-doped MnO2 to create abundant oxygen vacancies and active sites for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Efficient and non-precious-metal-based catalysts (e.g., manganese-based oxides) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remain a substantial challenge. Creation of oxygen vacancies of manganese-based oxides with the aim to enhance their intrinsic activities is rarely reported, and there is a critical requirement for a mild and facile synthesis strategy to create abundant oxygen vacancies on manganese-based oxides. Herein, Co-doped MnO₂ nanowires were reduced by NaBH₄ solution at room temperature; then, MnCo₂O_4.5 nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies and active sites were formed on the surface of Co-doped MnO₂ nanowires. Benefiting from the reduction strategy, the fabricated hierarchical Co-doped-MnO₂@MnCo₂O_4.5 nanowire/nanosheet nanocomposites exhibit higher catalytic activity (an overpotential of 250 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution) than pristine Co-doped MnO₂ nanowires. The calculated TOF of Co-doped-MnO₂@MnCo₂O_4.5 is 0.034 s^-1 at the overpotential of 300 mV, which is 136-fold higher than that of Co-doped-MnO₂. The excellent OER performance was attributed to the synergistic advantages of abundant oxygen vacancies and active sites over the hierarchical nanowire-nanosheet architectures.

Sonochemical synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride-manganese oxide interfaces for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

The present study focuses on the sonochemical synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride-manganese oxide (GCN/MnO₂) nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of an environmentally hazardous pharmaceutical compound, tetracycline hydrochloride (TcH). The sonochemical synthesis aided in tailoring the morphology of GCN/MnO₂. The characterization results of SEM/FESEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis spectra, EIS, CV, etc., revealed on the morphology, composition, crystallinity, and other photo-electro-intrinsic properties of the materials. The synergy of GCN and MnO₂ results in rapid electron transfer, efficient visible-light absorption, and slower electron-hole pair recombination through its photo-responsive traits against TcH. It was noted that ~ 93% TcH (20 mg L^-1) degradation was achieved for 30-mg catalyst dose under light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation (9 W, 220 V) in 135-min duration. The TcH mineralization results were well fit to pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.02 min^-1 (R² = 0.994). In addition, the composite possessed fair reusability for consequent cycles. Hence, the as-synthesized composite applied for photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis fosters a fit-for-purpose and reliable system in the decontamination of TcH in environmental samples. Factors Governing the Activity of α-MnO2 Catalysts in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Conductivity versus Exposed Surface Area of Cryptomelane

Cryptomelane (α-(K)MnO2 ) powders were synthesized by different methods leading to only slight differences in their bulk crystal structure and chemical composition, while the BET surface area and the crystallite size differed significantly. Their performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) covered a wide range and their sequence of increasing activity differed when electrocatalysis in alkaline electrolyte and chemical water oxidation using Ce4+ were compared. The decisive factors that explain this difference were identified in the catalysts' microstructure. Chemical water oxidation activity is substantially governed by the exposed surface area, while the electrocatalytic activity is determined largely by the electric conductivity, which was found to correlate with the particle morphology in terms of needle length and aspect ratio in this sample series. This correlation is rather explained by an improved conductivity due to longer needles than by structure sensitivity as was supported by reference experiments using H2 O2 decomposition and carbon black as additive. The most active catalyst R-cryptomelane reached a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a potential 1.73 V without, and at 1.71 V in the presence of carbon black. The improvement was significantly higher for the catalyst with lower initial activity. However, the materials showed a disappointing catalytic stability during alkaline electrochemical OER, whereas the crystal structure was found to be stable at working conditions.

Transition metal based heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction at near-neutral pH

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered as a major bottleneck of water splitting for hydrogen generation. It is highly desired to develop high performance OER catalysts in near-neutral operating environments because of mild corrosion and pollution. This review summarized the recent development of heterogeneous catalysts containing transition metals (TM) for the OER at near-neutral pH. Specifically, we focus on some effective strategies to achieve a high OER performance for TM (e.g., Co, Mn, Ni, Cu, Fe, and binary TM)-based catalysts in near-neutral media. The progress and perspectives are discussed, which might provide some insights into the rapid promotion of the electrocatalytic performance for future applications in hydrogen production.

Water-Oxidation Electrocatalysis by Manganese Oxides: Syntheses, Electrode Preparations, Electrolytes and Two Fundamental Questions

The efficient catalysis of the four-electron oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is a central challenge for the development of devices for the production of solar fuels. This is equally true for artificial leaf-type structures and electrolyzer systems. Inspired by the oxygen evolving complex of Photosystem II, the biological catalyst for this reaction, scientists around the globe have investigated the possibility to use manganese oxides (“MnOx”) for this task. This perspective article will look at selected examples from the last about 10 years of research in this field. At first, three aspects are addressed in detail which have emerged as crucial for the development of efficient electrocatalysts for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER): (1) the structure and composition of the “MnOx” is of central importance for catalytic performance and it seems that amorphous, MnIII/IV oxides with layered or tunnelled structures are especially good choices; (2) the type of support material (e.g. conducting oxides or nanostructured carbon) as well as the methods used to immobilize the MnOx catalysts on them greatly influence OER overpotentials, current densities and long-term stabilities of the electrodes and (3) when operating MnOx-based water-oxidizing anodes in electrolyzers, it has often been observed that the electrocatalytic performance is also largely dependent on the electrolyte’s composition and pH and that a number of equilibria accompany the catalytic process, resulting in “adaptive changes” of the MnOx material over time. Overall, it thus has become clear over the last years that efficient and stable water-oxidation electrolysis by manganese oxides can only be achieved if at least four parameters are optimized in combination: the oxide catalyst itself, the immobilization method, the catalyst support and last but not least the composition of the electrolyte. Furthermore, these parameters are not only important for the electrode optimization process alone but must also be considered if different electrode types are to be compared with each other or with literature values from literature. Because, as without their consideration it is almost impossible to draw the right scientific conclusions. On the other hand, it currently seems unlikely that even carefully optimized MnOx anodes will ever reach the superb OER rates observed for iridium, ruthenium or nickel-iron oxide anodes in acidic or alkaline solutions, respectively. So at the end of the article, two fundamental questions will be addressed: (1) are there technical applications where MnOx materials could actually be the first choice as OER electrocatalysts? and (2) do the results from the last decade of intensive research in this field help to solve a puzzle already formulated in 2008: “Why did nature choose manganese to make oxygen?”.

Oxidative Deposition of Manganese Oxide Nanosheets on Nitrogen-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Applied in the Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The development of nonprecious catalysts for water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is one of the major challenges to meet future sustainable fuel demand. Herein, thin layers of manganese oxide nanosheets supported on nitrogen-functionalized carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) were formed by the treatment of NCNTs dispersed in aqueous solutions of KMnO₄ or CsMnO₄ under reflux or under hydrothermal (HT) conditions and used as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Our results show that the NCNTs treated under reflux were covered by partly amorphous and birnessite-type manganese oxides, while predominantly crystalline birnessite manganese oxide was observed for the hydrothermally treated samples. The latter showed, depending on the temperature during synthesis, an electrocatalytically favorable reduction from birnessite-type MnO₂ to γ-MnOOH. OER activity measurements revealed a decrease of the overpotential for the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 from 1.70 V_RHE for the bare NCNTs to 1.64 V_RHE for the samples treated under reflux in the presence of KMnO₄. The hydrothermally treated samples afforded the same current density at a lower potential of 1.60 V_RHE and a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec^-1, suggesting that the higher OER activity is due to γ-MnOOH formation. Oxidative deposition under reflux conditions using CsMnO₄ along with mild HT treatment using KMnO₄, and low manganese loadings in both cases, were identified as the most suitable synthetic routes to obtain highly active MnO _x /NCNT catalysts for electrochemical water oxidation.

The role of Ni oxide in the electrocatalytic water oxidation of a nickel(ii) Schiff base (N,N′-bis (salicylidene) ethylenediamino nickel(ii)) is investigated.

Cosputtered Calcium Manganese Oxide Electrodes for Water Oxidation

Calcium manganese oxide films were prepared by cosputter deposition from Mn and CaMnO₃ targets and evaluated for their suitability as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a compact morphology for the as-deposited films and the formation of nanorodlike features on the surfaces after annealing at 600 °C. X-ray-photoelectron-spectroscopy analysis showed that the surface oxidation state is close to +III (as in Mn₂O₃) for the as-deposited films and increases slightly to a mixture of III and IV after annealing occurs in dry air at 400-600 °C. Glancing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) suggested that the CaMn_xO_y films are amorphous even when heated to 600 °C. However, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that there is actually a polycrystalline component of the film, which best matches Mn₃O₄ (hausmannite with the average Mn oxidation state of ∼+2.7) but may have a slightly expanded unit cell because of the incorporation of Ca. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the as-deposited CaMn_xO_y films were OER-inactive. In contrast, annealing at 400 or 600 °C resulted in an increase of ∼15-fold in the current densities, which reached j ≅ 1.5 mA·cm^-2 at OER overpotentials of η ≈ 550 mV in cyclic voltammetry (CV) sweeps. For the same η, annealed CaMn_xO_y electrodes also showed good electrochemical stabilities during 2 h of electrolysis, as rather constant steady-state current densities of j ≅ 0.4-0.5 mA·cm^-2 were observed. The thicknesses and surface morphologies of the CaMn_xO_y films did not change during the electrochemical measurements, indicating that corrosion was negligible. In comparison with a previous study in which Ca-free thin layers of MnO_x were evaluated, the results demonstrate that Ca²⁺ incorporation can enhance the OER activity of MnO_x electrocatalysts prepared by sputter deposition. This work provides guidance for designing new electrodes for water oxidation on the basis of the abundant and nontoxic elements manganese and calcium.
