Very Strong, Super-Tough, Antibacterial, and Biodegradable Polymeric Materials with Excellent UV-Blocking Performance

Sacrificial hydrogen bonds enhance the performance of covalently crosslinked composite films derived from soy protein isolate and dialdehyde starch

Soy protein films have the advantage of being eco-friendly and renewable, but their practical applications are hindered by the mechanical properties. The exceptional tensile strength and fracture toughness of natural silk stem from sacrificial hydrogen bonds it contains that effectively dissipates energy. In this study, we draw inspiration from silk's structural principles to create biodegradable films based on soy protein isolate (SPI). Notably, composite films containing sodium lignosulfonate (LS) demonstrate exceptional strain at break (up to 153%) due to the augmentation of reversible hydrogen bonding, contrasted to films with the addition of solely dialdehyde starch (DAS). The enhancement of tensile strength is realized through a combination of Schiff base cross-linking and sacrificial hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the incorporation of LS markedly improves the films' ultraviolet (UV) blocking capabilities and hydrophobicity. This innovative design strategy holds great promise for advancing the production of eco-friendly SPI-based films that combine strength and toughness.

Melt-processable polyvinyl alcohol/lignin composites with improved strength via synergistic plasticization of lignin

The characteristics of multi-hydroxyl structure and strong hydrogen bonding in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) make its melting point close to its decomposition temperature, causing melt-processing difficulty. In this work, following the plasticization of small-molecule primary plasticizer acetamide, lignin was demonstrated as a green secondary plasticizer in realizing the melt processing and simultaneous reinforcement of PVA. During the plasticization process, lignin was able to combine with the hydroxyl groups of PVA, so as to destroy the hydrogen bonds and regularity of the PVA chains. The synergistic plasticization effect of lignin dramatically reduced the melting point of PVA from 185 °C to 151 °C. The thermal processing window of PVA composites was expanded from 50 °C to roughly 80 °C after introducing lignin. In contrast to acetamide, the addition of lignin significantly increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites to 71 MPa and 1.34 GPa, respectively. Meanwhile, lignin helped to hinder the migration of acetamide via hydrogen bonds. With the addition of lignin, the composites also displayed enhanced hydrophobicity and excellent UV shielding performance. The strategy of synergistic plasticization of lignin provides a feasible basis for the practical application of lignin in melt-processable PVA materials with good comprehensive properties.

Cellulose-based light-management film exhibiting flame-retardant and thermal-healing properties

The increased use and expansion of biomass applications offer a viable approach to diminish reliance on petroleum-derived resources and promote carbon neutrality. Cellulose, being the most abundant natural polymer on Earth, has garnered considerable attention. This study introduces a straightforward method to fabricate a cellulose-based multifunctional composite film designed for efficient light management, specifically featuring flame retardant and thermal-healing capabilities. The film incorporates a microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) matrix with functional components, namely benzoxazine resin (BR) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate (HEMAP). Utilizing dynamic covalent crosslinking, the composite films exhibit satisfactory self-healing properties. The combined effects of BR and HEMAP contribute to the effective flame retardancy of the composite film. Furthermore, the resulting film shields ultraviolet and blue light, offering comfortable interior lighting by mitigating harsh light and extending light propagation. The film also demonstrates favorable water resistance and high tensile strength. The exceptional multifunctional properties, coupled with its safety and extended service life, position it as a potential optical management film for smart building materials.

Core-shell structured lignin-stabilized silver nanoprisms for colorimetric detection of sulfur ions

Widespread occurrence of sulfides in domestic and industrial wastewater contributes to environmental pollution and poses risks to human health. Therefore, the development of highly selective, sensitive, and rapid sulfur ion (S2-) detection probes in aquatic ecosystems is of paramount importance. In this study, lignin-stabilized silver nanoprisms (EHL@AgNPRs) were prepared using the seed growth and self-assembly methods. Based on this, a novel, high-performance, and environmentally friendly S2- colorimetric detection method was proposed. Lignin is believed to coat the surface of AgNPRs through cation-π and electrostatic interactions, acting as an excellent dispersant and stabilizer to prevent aggregation and shape deformation. This allows AgNPRs to maintain localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics and superior colorimetric sensing sensitivity towards S2- even after 30 d. The EHL@AgNPRs exhibited remarkable selectivity towards S2- with a minimum detection limit of 41.3 nM. The conjugation of lignin with AgNPRs offers a highly promising approach for the rapid detection of S2- in natural aquatic environments and for the valorization of lignin.

Influence of Spider Silk Protein Structure on Mechanical and Biological Properties for Energetic Material Detection

Spider silk protein, renowned for its excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, chemical stability, and low immune and inflammatory response activation, consists of a core domain with a repeat sequence and non-repeating sequences at the N-terminal and C-terminal. In this review, we focus on the relationship between the silk structure and its mechanical properties, exploring the potential applications of spider silk materials in the detection of energetic materials.

Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium lignosulfonate/black rice anthocyanin extract agricultural film for monitoring soil pH

This study focuses on the formulation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based films with pH-sensitive properties and ultraviolet (UV) resistance by incorporating sodium lignosulfonate (LS) and varying concentrations of black rice anthocyanin extract (BRE) into PVA matrix. The films were characterized through Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile test, water vapor permeability (WVP), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The results indicated that BRE and LS effectively formed strong hydrogen bonds with PVA, leading to reduced film crystallinity, improved mechanical properties, and lowered WVP as the BRE content increased. The addition of LS and BRE improved the UV resistance of the films, and BRE imparted films with excellent pH-sensitive properties. Among the film variants, the PVA/LS/BRE film containing 1 wt% BRE exhibited excellent mechanical performance, boasting an elongation at a break of 360.66 % and a strength of 35.68 MPa. Additionally, soil pH visualization holds significant potential within agriculture. In this study, the PVA/LS/BRE film containing 2 wt% BRE exhibited minimum UV transparency (0.9 %) and displayed the most distinct color response across varying pH environments. Therefore, the PVA/LS/BRE film containing 2 wt% BRE excelled in both UV resistance and pH sensitivity, positioning it as the most suitable material for the development of agricultural films integrated with soil pH monitoring capabilities.

Controllable and biocompatible 3D bioprinting technology for microorganisms: Fundamental, environmental applications and challenges

3D bioprinting is a new 3D manufacturing technology, that can be used to accurately distribute and load microorganisms to form microbial active materials with multiple complex functions. Based on the 3D printing of human cells in tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting technology has been developed. Although 3D bioprinting technology is still immature, it shows great potential in the environmental field. Due to the precise programming control and multi-printing pathway, 3D bioprinting technology provides a high-throughput method based on micron-level patterning for a wide range of environmental microbiological engineering applications, which makes it an on-demand, multi-functional manufacturing technology. To date, 3D bioprinting technology has been employed in microbial fuel cells, biofilm material preparation, microbial catalysts and 4D bioprinting with time dimension functions. Nevertheless, current 3D bioprinting technology faces technical challenges in improving the mechanical properties of materials, developing specific bioinks to adapt to different strains, and exploring 4D bioprinting for intelligent applications. Hence, this review systematically analyzes the basic technical principles of 3D bioprinting, bioinks materials and their applications in the environmental field, and proposes the challenges and future prospects of 3D bioprinting in the environmental field. Combined with the current development of microbial enhancement technology in the environmental field, 3D bioprinting will be developed into an enabling platform for multifunctional microorganisms and facilitate greater control of in situ directional reactions.

Tannin-Assisted Synthesis of Nanocomposites Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles and Their Multifunctional Applications

Nanocomposites have been widely used in many important areas due to their particular physical/chemical properties; however, just though a simple technology, endowing multiple functions into a single nanomaterial for realizing their multifunctional applications is still a challenge. Here, we report a robust method for the facile synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites via using tannin-coated phenol-formaldehyde resin nanospheres (TA-PFRN) as silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) carriers. The thickness of the tannin coating is readily tuned from 50 to 320 nm by regulating the concentration of tannin added. Under the optimal conditions, the TA-PFRN has a 23.8 wt % of Ag NPs loading capacity with only 17.2 nm Ag NP layers. Consequently, the novel TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites possess multiple functions and integrated characteristics. As catalysts, the catalytic efficiency of TA-PFRN@Ag is nearly 6 times higher than that of the PFRN@Ag. As highly effective free radical initiators, TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites can trigger ultrafast acrylic acid (AA)/acrylamide (AM) polymerization at room temperature (in only a few minutes). As nano-reinforced fillers, the addition of 0.04 wt % nanocomposites can improve the tensile strength of PVA film from 60 to 153.2 MPa. In addition, the nanocomposites can also serve as antibacterial agents, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus); as antiultraviolet agents, the presence of TA-PFRN@Ag nanocomposites endows the film/hydrogel materials excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding. This work provides a novel strategy for the green synthesis of Ag-based multifunctional nanocomposites that show promising applications in catalysis, nanomaterials, and biomedicine.

A Mechanically Reinforced Super Bone Glue Makes a Leap in Hard Tissue Strong Adhesion and Augmented Bone Regeneration

Existing bone tissue engineering strategies aim to achieve minimize surgical trauma, stabilize the injured area, and establish a dynamic osteogenic microenvironment. The cutting-edge bone glue developed in this study satisfies these criteria. Inspired by the excellent adhesive properties of mussels, herein, a super osteogenic glue (L-DPZ) that integrates poly(vinyl alcohol), L-dopa amino acid, and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 characterized by catechol-metal coordination is used to successfully adhere to hard tissue with a maximum adhesive strength of 10 MPa, which is much higher than those of commercial and previously reported bone glues. The stable hard tissue adhesion also enables it to adhere strongly to luxated or broken teeth, Bio-Oss (a typical bone graft material), and splice fragments from comminuted fractures of the rabbit femur. Then, it is testified that the L-DPZ hydrogels exhibit satisfactory biocompatibility, stable degradability, and osteogenic ability in vitro. Moreover, the ability to anchor Bio-Oss and sustained osteogenesis of L-DPZ result in satisfactory healing in calvarial bone defect models in rabbits, as observed by increased bone thickness and the ingrowth of new bone tissue. These results are expected to demonstrate solutions to clinical dilemmas such as comminuted bone fracture fixation, bone defect reconstruction, and teeth dislocation replantation.

Multifunctional Bacterial Cellulose Films Enabled by Deep Eutectic Solvent-Extracted Lignin

Inspired by natural plant cells, lignin is utilized as a filler and a functional agent to modify bacterial cellulose (BC). By mimicking the lignin-carbohydrate structure, deep eutectic solvent (DES)-extracted lignin serves as a glue to strength the BC films and endows the films with diverse functionality. The lignin isolated by the DES (formed by choline chloride and lactic acid) is rich in phenol hydroxyl groups (5.5 mmol/g) and exhibits a narrow molecular weight distribution. A good interface compatibility can be obtained in the composite film, and lignin fills the void/gaps between BC fibrils. The integration of lignin endows the films with enhanced water-proof, mechanical, UV shielding, gas barrier, and antioxidant abilities. The BC/lignin composite film with 0.4 g of lignin addition (BL-0.4) exhibits an oxygen permeability and a water vapor transmission rate of 0.4 mL/m²/day/Pa and 0.9 g/m²/day, respectively. The multifunctional films are promising candidates for packing materials and exhibit a broad application prospect in the field of petroleum-based polymer replacement.

Biomimetic ultra-strong, ultra-tough, degradable cellulose-based composites for multi-stimuli responsive shape memory

Fabrication of ultra-strong, ultra-tough, sustainable, and degradable bio-based composites is urgently needed but remains challenging. Here, a biomimetic sustainable, degradable, and multi-stimuli responsive cellulose/PCL/Fe₃O₄ composite with ultra-strong mechanical strength and ultra-high toughness was developed. To prepare the proposed composites, the soft poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) side chain was grafted onto the rigid cellulose backbone, then the cellulose graft copolymer (EC-g-PCL) reacted with rigid hexamethylenediamine modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle (Fe₃O₄-NH₂) to construct the crosslinking network using MDI-50 as a crosslinker. Given by the construction of crosslinking network and the "hard" and "soft" interactive structure, the composites showed ultra-strong mechanical strength (25.7 MPa) and ultra-high toughness (107.0 MJ/m³), and the composite specimen could lift a weight of approximately 21,200 times its mass. The composites also exhibited rapid degradation ability with high degradation efficiency. In addition, the composites showed excellent thermal responsive shape memory property with a shape recovery ratio above 96 %. Most importantly, the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles endowed the composites with photothermal conversion property, the composites exhibited superior NIR light-triggered shape memory capability. The EC-g-PCL/Fe₃O₄ composites with ultra-strong mechanical strength and ultra-high toughness have promising applications in heavy-lift, object transportation, and self-tightening knots.

Antibacterial lignin-based nanoparticles and their use in composite materials

Lignin, one of the most abundant biopolymers on earth, has been traditionally considered a low-value by-product of the pulp and paper industries. This renewable raw material, besides being a source of valuable molecules for the chemical industry, also has antioxidant, UV-absorbing, and antibacterial properties in its macromolecular form. Moreover, lignin in the form of nanoparticles (LigNPs) presents advantages over bulk lignin, such as higher reactivity due to its larger surface-to-volume ratio. In view of the rapid surge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), caused by the overuse of antibiotics, continuous development of novel antibacterial agents is needed. The use of LigNPs as antibacterial agents is a suitable alternative to conventional antibiotics for topical application or chemical disinfectants for surfaces and packaging. Besides, their multiple and unspecific targets in the bacterial cell may prevent the emergence of AMR. This review summarizes the latest developments in antibacterial nano-formulated lignin, both in dispersion and embedded in materials. The following roles of lignin in the formulation of antibacterial NPs have been analyzed: (i) an antibacterial active in nanoformulations, (ii) a reducing and capping agent for antimicrobial metals, and (iii) a carrier of other antibacterial agents. Finally, the review covers the inclusion of LigNPs in films, fibers, hydrogels, and foams, for obtaining antibacterial lignin-based nanocomposites for a variety of applications, including food packaging, wound healing, and medical coatings.

Transparent Cellulose-based Film with High UV-blocking Performance Fabricated by Surface Modification using Biginelli Reaction

Efficient and sustainable ultraviolet (UV)-blocking materials are of great interest in many fields. Herein, novel cellulose-based UV-blocking films were developed via surface modification using Biginelli reaction. The resulting films exhibited excellent visible transparency (80%) at 550 nm and superhigh UV-blocking performance, which can shield almost 100% UVA and UVB. These features are very stable even the materials being subjected to solvents, UV irradiation, and thermal treatment. Facile fabrication of a polyvinyl alcohol-based hydrophobic fluorescent film via the Hantzsch reaction for broadband UV protection

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is harmful to human health. However, the traditional preparation of anti-UV films through the doping of UV absorbers leads to unstable products. Chemical modification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate functional derivatives expand the application of these materials. Herein, a 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) fluorescent ring with a conjugated structure as a strong UV-absorber group was introduced onto a polyvinyl alcohol acetoacetate (PVAA) film to improve its UV-blocking performance. Firstly, PVAA was prepared via transesterification using tert-butyl acetoacetate (t-BAA). Then, the Hantzsch reaction was carried out on the surface of the PVAA film at room temperature. The resulting film showed high transparency, bright fluorescence emission, good mechanical properties, and outstanding stability. The introduction of the hydrophobic carbon chain reduced the hydrophilicity and swelling capacity of the PVAA film. In addition, the conjugated structure endowed the fluorescent film with excellent UV-blocking performance, where almost 100% UVA and UVB spectra could be shielded. The UV-blocking properties of the prepared films were persistent when they were exposed to UV irradiation, solvents, and subjected to thermal treatment. This work presents a facile and environmentally-friendly strategy by which to fabricate a multifunctional PVA-based film, which holds great potential for application in the anti-counterfeiting and UV-blocking fields.

Ultrafast gelation of multifunctional hydrogel/composite based on self-catalytic Fe3+/Tannic acid-cellulose nanofibers

Multifunctional hydrogels with transparency, ultraviolet (UV)-blocking, stretchable, self-healing, adhesive, antioxidant and antibacterial properties are promising materials for biomedical and relevant applications. However, preparation of these hydrogels at ambient environment without stimuli is still a challenge. Here, a series of hydrogels possessing ultrashort gelation time (~30 s) at room or cold temperature were fabricated based on self-catalytic Fe³⁺/Tannic acid-cellulose nanofiber (Fe³⁺/TA-CNF). Fe³⁺/TA-CNF formed stable redox pairs to activate ammonium persulfate (initiator), generating abundant free radicals to trigger the ultrafast polymerization of acrylic acid (AA). To improve the antibacterial ability of hydrogel, a bilayer hydrogel composite (NF@HG) composed of tetracycline hydrochloride (TH)-loaded electrospun nanofibers and hydrogel layer was fabricated via a mild casting method. The NF@HG exhibited enhanced antibacterial ability and the sustained release of TH can provide long-term antibacterial activity. Besides, cell viability results demonstrated that NF@HG was non-cytotoxic. Taken together, this strategy based on self-catalytic Fe³⁺/TA-CNF system may inspire new aspects on fast and economical preparation of multifunctional hydrogels or composites, which have attractive industrial applications for biomedical materials.

Ag immobilized lignin-based PU coating: A promising candidate to promote the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and antibacterial property of paper packaging

A lignin-based PU coating was prepared for paper-based green packaging. Two representative diisocyanate were used to prepare the coatings. Due to the rigid aromatic, the physical properties of the TDI system reached the maximum below the lignin content of 40%. The HDI that contains flexible aliphatic chains alleviated the brittleness of coating, and it showed physical advantages when the lignin content was more than 50%. Owing to the high lignin content, the coating presented enhanced thermal stability. After coated with the lignin-based PU coatings, the dry tensile strength of coated paper was improved by 126%. Amazingly, the wet strength was increased from 0.31 to 12.6 MPa with an improvement nearly 40 times. Based on the coordination of lignin, Ag⁺ was introduced into the PU matrix, which imparted the coating with excellent antibacterial ability. The colony forming units of E. coli and S. aureus were both less than 1. However, no inhibition halo was observed, which indicated that the Ag was firmly anchored on the coating and the antibacterial ability is only available when the bacterial contact the coating surface. The lignin-based PU coating with favorable sustainability and properties shows great potential in paper-based green packaging fields.

A mussel-inspired film for adhesion to wet buccal tissue and efficient buccal drug delivery

Administration of drugs via the buccal route has attracted much attention in recent years. However, developing systems with satisfactory adhesion under wet conditions and adequate drug bioavailability still remains a challenge. Here, we propose a mussel-inspired mucoadhesive film. Ex vivo models show that this film can achieve strong adhesion to wet buccal tissues (up to 38.72 ± 10.94 kPa). We also demonstrate that the adhesion mechanism of this film relies on both physical association and covalent bonding between the film and mucus. Additionally, the film with incorporated polydopamine nanoparticles shows superior advantages for transport across the mucosal barrier, with improved drug bioavailability (~3.5-fold greater than observed with oral delivery) and therapeutic efficacy in oral mucositis models (~6.0-fold improvement in wound closure at day 5 compared with that observed with no treatment). We anticipate that this platform might aid the development of tissue adhesives and inspire the design of nanoparticle-based buccal delivery systems.
