Reactivity Studies of Phosphinines: The Selenation of Diphenyl-Phosphine Substituents and Formation of a Chelating Bis(Phosphinine) Palladium(II) Complex

Phosphinines and donor-substituted phosphinines are of recent interest due to their use in homogeneous catalysis. In this article, a Pd(II) bis(phosphinine) complex was characterised and phosphorus–selenium coupling constants were used to assess the donor properties of the diphenylphosphine substituents of phosphinine ligands to promote their further use in catalysis. The selenation of 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-3,6-dimethylphosphinine (5) and 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine (6) gave the corresponding phosphine selenides 8 and 9, respectively, leaving the phosphinine ring intact. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the oxidation of all the diphenylphosphine substituents with 1JP-Se coupling constants determined to be similar to SePPh3, indicating that the phosphinine rings were electronically similar to phenyl substituents. Solutions of 6 were found to react with oxygen slowly to produce the phosphine oxide 10 along with other by-products. The reaction of [bis{3-methyl-6-(trimethylsilyl)phosphinine-2-yl}dimethylsilane] (4) with [PdCl2(COD)] gave the chelating dichloropalladium(II) complex, as determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and an elemental analysis. The molecular structure of the intermediate 2 in the formation of 4,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,3,2-diazaphosphinine (3) was also determined, which confirmed the structure of the diazaphosphacycle P(Cl){N=C(tBu)CH=C(tBu)-N(H)}.

Facile Synthesis of a Stable Side-on Phosphinyne Complex by Redox Driven Intramolecular Cyclisation

Alkyne complexes with vicinal substitution by a Lewis acid and a Lewis base at the coordinated alkyne are prospective frustrated Lewis pairs exhibiting a particular mutual distance and, hence, a specific activation potential. In this contribution, investigations on the generation of a WII alkyne complex bearing a phosphine as Lewis base and a carbenium group as Lewis acid are presented. Independently on potential substrates added, an intramolecular cyclisation product was always isolated. A subsequent deprotonation step led to an unprecedented side-on λ5 -phosphinyne complex, which is interpreted as highly zwitterionic according to visible absorption spectroscopy supported by TD-DFT. Low-temperature 31 P NMR and EPR spectroscopic measurements combined with time-dependent IR-spectroscopic monitoring provided insights in the mechanism of the cyclisation reaction. Decomposition of the multicomponent IR spectra by multivariate curve resolution and a kinetic hard-modelling approach allowed the derivation of kinetic parameters. Assignment of the individual IR spectra to potential intermediates was provided by DFT calculations.

A Phosphinine-Derived 1-Phospha-7-Bora-Norbornadiene: Frustrated Lewis Pair Type Activation of Triple Bonds

Salt metathesis of 1-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylphosphacyclohexadienyl lithium and chlorobis(pentafluorophenyl)borane affords a 1-phospha-7-bora-norbornadiene derivative 2. The C≡N triple bonds of nitriles insert into the P-B bond of 2 with concomitant C-B bond cleavage, whereas the C≡C bonds of phenylacetylenes react with 2 to form λ4 -phosphabarrelenes. Even though 2 must formally be regarded as a classical Lewis adduct, the C≡N and C≡C activation processes observed (and the mild conditions under which they occur) are reminiscent of the reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs. Indeed, NMR and computational studies give insight into the mechanism of the reactions and reveal the labile nature of the phosphorus-boron bond in 2, which is also suggested by detailed NMR spectroscopic studies on this compound. Nitrile insertion is thus preceded by ring opening of the bicycle of 2 through P-B bond splitting with a low energy barrier. By contrast, the reaction with alkynes involves formation of a reactive zwitterionic methylphosphininium borate intermediate, which readily undergoes alkyne 1,4-addition.

Making the unconventional μ2-P bridging binding mode more conventional in phosphinine complexes

As compared to the normal η¹-P σ-complexes or η⁶-phosphinine π-complexes, the rare μ²-P bridging binding mode of phosphinines can be tuned by employing electron donating substitute.

Phosphinines, as aromatic heterocycles, usually engage in coordination as η¹-P σ-complexes or η⁶-phosphinine π-complexes. The μ²-P bridging coordination mode is rarely observed. With the aim to study the effect of different electronic configurations of phosphinines on the coordination modes, a series of anionic phosphinin-2-olates and neutral phosphinin-2-ols were prepared with moderate to high yield. Then the coordination chemistry of these two series was studied in detail towards coinage metals (Au(i) and Cu(i)). It is observed that the anionic phosphinin-2-olates possess a higher tendency to take a bridging position between two metal centers compared to the neutral phosphinin-2-ols. Based on these experimental findings bolstered by DFT calculations, some insight is gained on how the unconventional μ²-P phosphinine bridging coordination mode can be made more conventional and used for the synthesis of polynuclear complexes.

Two isomers of a bis(diphenylphosphino)phosphinine, and the synthesis and reactivity of Ru arene/Cp* phosphinophosphinine complexes

Two isomers of a bis(diphenylphosphino)phosphinine have been synthesised, and the Ru coordination chemistry of a 2-phosphinophosphinine extended to include reactions of H₂O across a PC double bond.

A ruthenium(ii) bis(phosphinophosphinine) complex as a precatalyst for transfer-hydrogenation and hydrogen-borrowing reactions

A Ru(ii) complex with 2-phosphinophosphinine ligands activated with KO^tBu catalyses the room temperature transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone and the hydrogen-borrowing reaction of MeOH/EtOH to the advanced biofuel isobutanol.

1-Alkynylphosphines and their derivatives as key starting materials in creating new phosphines

This Focus Review summarizes transformations of 1-alkynylphosphines and their derivatives directed toward the synthesis of new phosphines. Owing to the importance of organophosphines as ligands for transition metal catalysts, development of efficient methods for the synthesis of new phosphines is quite important. 1-Alkynylphosphines and their derivatives have been emerging as useful precursors for the creation of new phosphines. Chemical modifications of the carbon-carbon triple bonds, including nucleophilic addition and cycloaddition, lead to a wide range of new useful phosphines that are otherwise difficult to synthesize.

4,6-Bis(supermesitylphosphanylidenemethyl)dibenzofuran. Synthesis, X-ray structure and reactivity towards group 11 metals

New kinetically stabilized mono- and bis-phosphaalkene ligands (2 and 3, respectively) were synthesized via the phospha-Wittig approach. Ligand 3 was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The coordinating behaviour of the bidentate ligand was investigated towards group 11 metal centers in order to test its capacity to bind two coordination sites located in a trans-fashion. The [Au(3)][BF4], [Ag(3)(H2O)][BF4] and [Cu(3)(CH3CN)][BF4] complexes 4 , 5 and 6, respectively, were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The peculiar geometries of 4 and 6 were rationalized by means of DFT calculations.
