Abstract
The development of suitable electron donors is critical to single-electron-transfer (SET) processes. The use of heteroatom-centered anions as super-electron-donors (SEDs) for direct SET reactions has rarely been studied. Here we show that heteroatom anions can be applied as SEDs to initiate radical reactions for facile synthesis of 3-substituted benzofurans. Phosphines, thiols and anilines bearing different substitution patterns work well in this inter-molecular radical coupling reaction and the 3-functionalized benzofuran products bearing heteroatomic functionalities are given in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction mechanism is elucidated via control experiments and computational methods. The afforded products show promising applications in both organic synthesis and pesticide development.

Abstract
The electronic effect of tert-butyl groups on intramolecular through-bond interactions between redox units in tetrathiafulvalene-tetraazapyrene (TAP) triads is investigated. The insertion of tert-butyl groups raises the TAP-localised LUMO level by 0.21 eV, in fairly good agreement with 0.17 eV determined by DFT calculations.

Abstract
A series of previously unknown 2,4,5-tri- and 2,4,5,7-tetrasubstituted 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes and their salts with HBF4 containing bulky spherically shaped substituents (Me, Br, and SiMe3) in the naphthalene ring has been synthesized. Using XRD analysis of 11 samples, the influence of the so-called "buttressing" and "clothespin" effects on their molecular structure and the NHN hydrogen bond geometry in the solid cations were investigated. The combined action of both effects has been shown to significantly increase the compression of the hydrogen bond. As a result, the previous record of the hydrogen bond shortness (N···N = 2.524 Å) has been surpassed in favor of 2.502 Å found for the tetrafluoroborate of 2,4,5,7-tetramethyl-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene. The molecular structure of the latter differs by perfect symmetry and practically barrier-free proton transfer in the [NHN]+ bond. On the basis of the results of quantum-chemical calculations, it is suggested that the value of 2.502 Å likely represents or lies very close to the theoretical limit for the short hydrogen bonds between the amine-type nitrogen atoms.

Abstract
New redox-active 1,2,5,6-tetrakis(guanidino)-naphthalene compounds, isolable and storable in the neutral and deep-green dicationic redox states and oxidisable further in two one-electron steps to the tetracations, are reported. Protonation switches on blue fluorescence, with the fluorescence intensity (quantum yield) increasing with the degree of protonation. Reactions with N-halogenosuccinimides or N-halogenophthalimides led to a series of new redox-active halogeno- and succinimido-/phthalimido-substituted derivatives. These highly selective reactions are proposed to proceed via the tri- or tetracationic state as the intermediate. The derivatives are oxidised reversibly at slightly higher potentials than that of the unsubstituted compounds to dications and further to tri- and tetracations. The integration of redox-active ligands in the transition-metal complexes shifts the redox potentials to higher values and also allows reversible oxidation in two potentially separated one-electron steps.

Abstract
1,2,5,6-Naphthalenetetramine (1a), its 1,4,5,8-isomer (2a), and their salts are valuable precursors for synthesizing nitrogen-containing arenes and other targets of interest. We describe how salts of tetramines 1a and 2a can be made from simple protected derivatives of 1,5-naphthalenediamine (2d) by sequences of regioselective dinitration, deprotection, and reduction. Various shortcomings of previously reported syntheses of tetramines 1a and 2a can thereby be avoided. In addition, we report structural studies that may help clarify the mechanism of nitration and resolve an earlier controversy about the regioselectivity observed in nitrations of derivatives of 1,5-naphthalenediamine (2d).

Abstract
Decision-making counter-ligands: a bridging redox-active ligand in a dinuclear copper complex could be either neutral (complex type [CuII-GFA-CuII]) or dicationic (complex type [CuI-GFA-CuI]), depending on the nature of the counter-ligands X.

Abstract
Herein the synthesis, structures and properties of hydrogen-bonded aggregates involving redox-active guanidine superbases are reported. Reversible hydrogen bonding is switched on by oxidation of the hydrogen-donor unit, and leads to formation of aggregates in which the hydrogen-bond donor unit is sandwiched by two hydrogen-bond acceptor units. Further oxidation (of the acceptor units) leads again to deaggregation. Aggregate formation is associated with a distinct color change, and the electronic situation could be described as a frozen stage on the way to hydrogen transfer. A further increase in the basicity of the hydrogen-bond acceptor leads to deprotonation reactions.

Abstract
The guanidino-functionalized 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(N,N′-diisopropylguanidino)benzene could act as a redox-active switch, and reversibly forms hydrogen-bond aggregates upon two-electron oxidation. Herein the influence of hydrogen bonding on the structure and electronic properties of the first transition metal complexes of the neutral and oxidized compound are studied. Reaction with CuCl2 leads by coupled redox- and coordination processes to a dinuclear CuII complex of the dicationic guanidine, in which CuCl2– counterions are locked through strong hydrogen-bonds in positions above and below the C6 ring plane. The electronic situation in the electronic ground and excited states of this complex were analysed by quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Neutral organic electron donors, featuring pyridinylidene–imidazolylidene, pyridinylidene–benzimidazolylidene and imidazolylidene–benzimidazolylidene linkages are reported. The pyridinylidene–benzimidazolylidene and imidazolylidene–benzimidazolylidene hybrid systems were designed to be the first super electron donors to convert iodoarenes to aryl radicals at room temperature, and indeed both show evidence for significant aryl radical formation at room temperature. The stronger pyridinylidene–imidazolylidene donor converts iodoarenes to aryl anions efficiently under appropriate conditions (3 equiv of donor). The presence of excess sodium hydride base has a very important and selective effect on some of these electron-transfer reactions, and a rationale for this is proposed.

Abstract
Reactions of super-electron-donors (SEDs) derived from 4-dimethylaminopyridine and from N-methylbenzimidazole with α-methoxy-γ-alkoxyalkyl iodides lead to liberation of the γ-alkoxy groups as their alcohols. This is consistent with generation of alkyl radicals from the alkyl halide precursors, and trapping of these radicals by the radical-cation of the SED, followed by a heterolytic fragmentation.
