Abstract
We report on the synthesis of two-layered alkali germanates, Na2Ge4O7 and K2Ge4O7. Both compounds were synthesized by using the ammonothermal method at 823 K and 100 MPa. Under these conditions, germanium is partially reduced from the +IV state to +II, forming mixed-valence compounds with the rarely observed [Ge(II)O3]4- unit. The valence state was verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and was accompanied by theoretical calculations alongside vibrational spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The compounds crystallize in the trigonal space groups (Na2Ge4O7: P3̅c1 and K2Ge4O7: P3̅m1) and feature layers of corner sharing [Ge(II)O3]4- and [Ge(IV)2O7]6- units forming [Ge(II)2Ge(IV)2O7]2- polyanions. These layers are separated by alkali metal ions. The compounds are colorless insulators with band gaps of 4.0-4.2 eV. According to the Robin-Day classification, both compounds can be described as class I materials, where the valences are trapped on specific sites.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to understand the main structural features and ways of formation of Ge-O bonds in organogermanium compounds under the conditions of ArnGeHal4-n (Hal = halide) hydrolysis. The structural types of these compounds were considered, providing 11 blocks (A-K). The molecular structures of the novel compounds [(p-FC6H4)3Ge]2O (1), [(p-F3CC6H4)3Ge]2O (2), and cyclo-[(p-F3CC6H4)2GeO]4 (3) were studied through XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis. The molecular structure of [(p-F3CC6H4)3GeO]4Ge (4), representing a novel structural type, was also investigated. The data presented in this study will be important in the design of materials with useful properties based on group 14 element derivatives with element-oxygen bonding.

Abstract
We report on the discovery of the first two examples of cationic palladium(II)-oxo clusters (POCs) containing f-metal ions, [PdII6 O12 M8 {(CH3 )2 AsO2 }16 (H2 O)8 ]4+ (M=CeIV , ThIV ), and their physicochemical characterization in the solid state, in solution and in the gas phase. The molecular structure of the two novel POCs comprises an octahedral {Pd6 O12 }12- core that is capped by eight MIV ions, resulting in a cationic, cubic assembly {Pd6 O12 MIV8 }20+ , which is coordinated by a total of 16 terminal dimethylarsinate and eight water ligands, resulting in the mixed PdII -CeIV /ThIV oxo-clusters [PdII6 O12 M8 {(CH3 )2 AsO2 }16 (H2 O)8 ]4+ (M=Ce, Pd6 Ce8 ; Th, Pd6 Th8 ). We have also studied the formation of host-guest inclusion complexes of Pd6 Ce8 and Pd6 Th8 with anionic 4-sulfocalix[n]arenes (n=4, 6, 8), resulting in the first examples of discrete, enthalpically-driven supramolecular assemblies between large metal-oxo clusters and calixarene-based macrocycles. The POCs were also found to be useful as pre-catalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 -reduction and HCOOH-oxidation.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of a giant, discrete, and neutral molecular disk, [Pd40O24(OH)16{(CH3)2AsO2}16] (Pd40), comprising a 40-palladium-oxo core that is capped by 16 dimethylarsinate moieties, resulting in a palladium-oxo cluster (POC) with a diameter of ∼2 nm. Pd40, which is the largest known neutral Pd-based oxo cluster, can be isolated either as a discrete species or constituting a 3D H-bonded organic-inorganic framework (HOIF) with a 12-tungstate Keggin ion, [SiW12O40]4- or [GeW12O40]4-. 1H and 13C NMR as well as 1H-DOSY NMR studies indicate that Pd40 is stable in aqueous solution, which is also confirmed by ESI-MS studies. Pd40 was also immobilized on a mesoporous support (SBA15) followed by the generation of size-controlled Pd nanoparticles (diameter ∼2-6 nm, as based on HR-TEM), leading to an effective heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst for the transformation of various arenes to saturated carbocycles.

Abstract
We report on the synthesis, structure, and physicochemical characterization of the first three examples of neutral palladium-oxo clusters (POCs). The 16-palladium(II)-oxo cluster [Pd16 O24 (OH)8 ((CH3 )2 As)8 ] (Pd16 ) comprises a cyclic palladium-oxo unit capped by eight dimethylarsinate groups. The chloro-derivative [Pd16 Na2 O26 (OH)3 Cl3 ((CH3 )2 As)8 ] (Pd16 Cl) was also prepared, which forms a highly stable 3D supramolecular lattice via strong intermolecular interactions. The 24-palladium(II)-oxo cluster [Pd24 O44 (OH)8 ((CH3 )2 As)16 ] (Pd24 ) can be considered as a bicapped derivative of Pd16 with a tetra-palladium-oxo unit grafted on either side. The three compounds were fully characterized 1) in the solid state by single-crystal and powder XRD, IR, TGA, and solid-state 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, 2) in solution by 1 H, 13 C NMR and 1 H DOSY spectroscopic methods, and 3) in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS).

Abstract
Here we describe the synthesis and structure of PST-18, a novel open-framework silicogermanate with Si/Ge ∼ 0.6, which contains a three-dimensional pore system consisting of large cuboid-shaped cavities with 8-ring windows, as well as with 7-rings interrupted by one OH group. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the structure of PST-18, synthesized using only tetramethylammonium fluoride as a structure-directing agent, is built up of natrolite zeolite chains and Ge9O18(OH)4 clusters in a fully ordered manner. The discovery of such a hybrid structure of zeolitic building units and non-zeolitic oxide clusters provides a new direction for expanding the structural regime of inorganic microporous crystalline materials.

Abstract
The "tailor effect" of fluoride, exclusively as a terminal rather than a bridge, was applied successfully to design low-dimensional structures in the system of transition metal germanophosphates for the first time. Two series of new compounds with low-dimensional structures are reported herein. K[M(II)Ge(OH)2(H0.5PO4)2] (M = Fe, Co) possess flat layered structures built from single chains of edge-sharing M(II)O6 and GeO6 octahedra interconnected by HPO4 tetrahedra. Their fluorinated derivatives, K4[M(II)Ge2F2(OH)2(PO4)2(HPO4)2]·2H2O (M = Fe, Co), exhibit band structures of two four-membered ring germanium phosphate single chains sandwiched by M(II)O6 octahedra via corner-sharing. Both of these structures contain anionic chains of the condensation of four-membered rings built from alternating GeO4Φ2 (Φ = F, OH) octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra via sharing common GeO4Φ2 (Φ = F, OH) octahedra, the topology of which is the same as that of the mineral kröhnkite [Na2Cu(SO4)2·2H2O]. Note that the switch from the two-dimensional layered structure to the one-dimensional band structure was performed simply by the addition of a small amount of KF·2H2O to the reaction mixture. This structural alteration arises from the incorporation of one terminal F atom to the coordination sphere of Ge, which breaks the linkage between the transition metal and germanium octahedra in the layer to form the band structure.

Abstract
The crystal structure of a novel open-framework gallogermanate, SU-66 {|(C6H18N2)18(H2O)32|[Ga4.8Ge87.2O208]}, has been solved from laboratory X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) data by using a direct-space structure solution algorithm and local structural information obtained from infrared (IR) spectroscopy. IR studies on 18 known germanates revealed that the bands in their IR spectra were characteristic of the different composite building units (CBUs) present in the structures. By comparing the bands corresponding to Ge—O vibrations in the IR spectra of SU-66 with those of the 18 known structures with different CBUs, the CBU of SU-66 could be identified empirically as the Ge10(O,OH)27 cluster (Ge10). The unit cell and space group (extinction symbol P--a; a = 14.963, b = 31.593, c = 18.759 Å) were determined initially from the XPD pattern and then confirmed by selected-area electron diffraction. The structure of SU-66 was solved from the XPD data using parallel tempering as implemented in FOX [Favre-Nicolin & Černý (2002). J. Appl. Cryst.
35, 734–743] by assuming P21
ma symmetry and two Ge10 clusters in the asymmetric unit. Rietveld refinement of the resulting structure using synchrotron XPD data showed the framework structure to be correct and the space group to be Pmma. The framework has extra-large (26-ring) one-dimensional channels and a very low framework density of 10.1 Ge/Ga atoms per 1000 Å3. SU-66, with 55 framework atoms in the asymmetric unit, is one of the more complicated framework structures solved from XPD data. Indeed, 98% of the reflections were overlapping in the XPD pattern used for structure solution. Tests on other open-framework germanates (SU-62, SU-65, SU-74, PKU-12 and ITQ-37) for which the XPD data, unit cell, space group and IR spectra were available proved to be equally successful. In a more complex case (SU-72) the combination of FOX and powder charge flipping was required for structure solution.

Abstract
Synthetic, structural, thermogravimetric, Mössbauer spectroscopic, and magnetic studies were performed on two new isotypic germanophosphates, M(II)(4)(H(2)O)(4)[Ge(OH)(2)(HPO(4))(2)(PO(4))(2)] (M(II) = Fe, Co), which have been prepared under hydro-/solvo-thermal conditions. Their crystal structures, determined from single crystal data, are built from zigzag chains of M(II)O(6)-octahedra sharing either trans or skew edges interconnected by [GeP(4)O(14)(OH)(4)](8-) germanophosphate pentamers to form three-dimensional neutral framework structure. The edge-sharing M(II)O(6)-octahedral chains lead to interesting magnetic properties. These two germanophosphates exhibit a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at low temperatures. Additionally, two antiferromagnetic ordering transitions at around 8 and 6 K were observed for cobalt compound while only one at 19 K for the iron compound. Low-dimensional magnetic correlations within the octahedral chains are also observed. The divalent state of Fe in the iron compound determined from the Mössbauer study and the isothermal magnetization as well as thermal analyses are discussed.
