Abstract
A thorough understanding of the internal conversion process between excited states is important for the designing of ideal multiple-emissive materials. However, it is hard to experimentally measure both the energy barriers and gaps between the excited states of a compound. For a long time, it is dubious if what was measured is the energy gap or barrier between two excited states. In this paper, we designed 1-(pyren-2'-yl)-9,12-di(p-tolyl)-o-carborane (2), which shows dual-emission in solution. Temperature-dependent fluorescence measurements show that the two emission bands in hexane are corresponding to two different excited states. The ratio of the emission bands is controlled by thermodynamics at higher temperatures and by kinetics at lower temperatures. Thus, the energy barrier and energy gaps between the two excited states of 2 can be experimentally estimated.

Abstract
Reversible conversion between excited-states plays an important role in many photophysical phenomena. Using 1-(pyren-2'-yl)-o-carborane as a model, we studied the photoinduced reversible charge-transfer (CT) process and the thermodynamic equilibrium between the locally-excited (LE) state and CT state, by combining steady state, time-resolved, and temperature-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy, fs- and ns-transient absorption, and DFT and LR-TDDFT calculations. Our results show that the energy gaps and energy barriers between the LE, CT, and a non-emissive 'mixed' state of 1-(pyren-2'-yl)-o-carborane are very small, and all three excited states are accessible at room temperature. The internal-conversion and reverse internal-conversion between LE and CT states are significantly faster than the radiative decay, and the two states have the same lifetimes and are in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Abstract
A dithienylethene molecule involving carborane clusters shows remarkable fatigue resistance and high contrast visual colour changes when irradiated with alternating ultraviolet and visible light. The fluorescence of this assembly can be switched on and off when irradiated in the solid state but not in the solution state.

Ru(ii) and Ir(iii) phenanthroline-based photosensitisers bearing o-carborane: PDT agents with boron carriers for potential BNCT. Biomater Sci 2021; 9:5691-5702. Abstract
Four novel transition metal-carborane photosensitisers were prepared by Sonogashira cross-coupling of 1-(4-ethynylbenzyl)-2-methyl-o-carborane (A-CB) with halogenated Ru(ii)- or Ir(iii)-phenanthroline complexes. The resulting boron-rich complexes with one (RuCB and IrCB) or two carborane cages (RuCB2 and IrCB2) were spectroscopically characterised, and their photophysical properties investigated. RuCB displayed the most attractive photophysical properties in solution (λem 635 nm, τT 2.53 μs, and φp 20.4%). Nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption studies were used to explore the 3MLCT nature of the triplet excited states, and the highest singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) were obtained for the mono-carborane-phenanthroline complexes (RuCB: 52% and IrCB: 25%). None of the complexes produce dark toxicity in SKBR-3 cells after incubation under photodynamic therapy (PDT) conditions. Remarkably, mono-carboranes RuCB and IrCB were the best internalised by the SKBR-3 cells, demonstrating the first examples of tris-bidentate transition metal-carborane complexes acting as triplet photosensitisers for PDT with a high photoactivity; RuCB or IrCB killed ∼50% of SKBR-3 cells at 10 μM after irradiation. Therefore, the high-boron content and the photoactive properties of these photosensitisers make them potential candidates as dual anti-cancer agents for PDT and Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).

Abstract
Bis(1-(4-tolyl)-carboran-2-yl)-(4-tolyl)-borane [(1-(4-MeC6 H4 )-closo-1,2-C2 B10 H10 -2-)2 (4-MeC6 H4 )B] (1), a new bis(o-carboranyl)-(R)-borane was synthesised by lithiation of the o-carboranyl precursor and subsequent salt metathesis reaction with (4-tolyl)BBr2 . Cyclic voltammetry experiments on 1 show multiple distinct reduction events with a one-electron first reduction. In a selective reduction experiment the corresponding paramagnetic radical anion 1.- was isolated and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses allow an in-depth comparison of 1, 1.- , their calculated geometries, and the S1 excited state of 1. Photophysical studies of 1 show a charge transfer (CT) emission with low quantum yield in solution but a strong increase in the solid state. TD-DFT calculations were used to identify transition-relevant orbitals.

Abstract
The performance of tunable emissions in aggregates is highly desirable but challenging owing to the restricted molecular conformations of luminogens. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new "flexible" luminogen, a carborane-cored compound NAPH, which exhibits variable photophysical behaviours in aggregates, such as aggregation-induced emission, crystallization-induced emission, polymorph-dependent emission, and mechanochromic luminescence. Moreover, the two polymorphs with different emission colors show opposite mechano-responsive luminescence, which is rarely observed for single-component luminescent materials. Both theoretical calculations and photophysical experiments reveal that the carborane-cored luminogen could afford variable conformations. This endows the whole molecule with multiple conformations in aggregates, thus leading to variable emission behaviours. Therefore, the present work provides new access to the construction of multifunctional single-component solid-state luminescent materials.

Abstract
o-Carborane, a cluster compound containing boron and adjacent carbon atoms, displays intriguing luminescent properties. Recently, compounds containing o-carborane units were found to show suppressed aggregation-induced quenching and intense solid-state emission; they also show potential for the development of stimuli-responsive luminochromic materials. In this Minireview, we introduce three kinds of fundamental photochemical properties: aggregation-induced emission, twisted intramolecular charge transfer in crystals, and environment-sensitive excimer formation in solids. Based on these properties, several types of luminochromism, such as thermos-, vapo-, and mechanochromism, have been discovered. Based mainly on results from recent studies, we illustrate these mechanisms as well as unique luminescent behaviors of o-carborane derivatives.

Abstract
Carboranes feature a wealth of unique structures and properties in phosphorescent transition-metal complexes (PTMCs). Herein, we identify the influence between the electronic structure in carboranes and the main ligand based on the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), which affects the phosphorescence properties of carborane-containing Pt compounds. Furthermore, the mechanism, including singlet-triplet splitting energies ΔE(Sn - T1), transition dipole moment for S0 - Sn transitions, the zero-field splitting (ZFS), the radiative decay rate constant (kr), the Huang-Rhys factor (S), and the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements <T1|HSOC|Sn> have been carefully investigated. The results presented here reveal the functional action 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) contributes to the emission process owing to the manipulation of main ligand dtb-bpy and complex 1a shows promising prospects for achieving highly efficient phosphorescence via engineering the conjugation of the main ligand dtb-bpy.

Abstract
The enhancement of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is presented on the basis of the strategy for improving solid-state luminescence by employing multiple o-carborane substituents. We synthesized the modified triphenylamines with various numbers of o-carborane units and compared their optical properties. From the optical measurements, the emission bands from the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state were obtained from the modified triphenylamines. It was notable that emission efficiencies of the multi-substituted triphenylamines including two or three o-carborane units were enhanced 6- to 8-fold compared to those of the mono-substituted triphenylamine. According to mechanistic studies, it was proposed that the single o-carborane substitution can load the AIE property via the TICT mechanism. It was revealed that the additional o-carborane units contribute to improving solid-state emission by suppressing aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Subsequently, intense AIEs were obtained. This paper presents a new role of the o-carborane substituent in the enhancement of AIEs.

Abstract
The emission process of the o-carborane dyad with anthracene originating from the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state in the crystalline state is described. The anthracene-o-carborane dyad was synthesized and its optical properties were investigated. Initially, the dyad had aggregation- and crystallization-induced emission enhancement (AIEE and CIEE) properties via the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state. Interestingly, the dyad presented the dual-emissions assigned to both locally excited (LE) and ICT states in solution. From the mechanistic studies and computer calculations, it was indicated that the emission band from the ICT should be attributable to the TICT emission. Surprisingly, even in the crystalline state, the TICT emission was observed. It was proposed from that the compact sphere shape of o-carborane would allow for rotation even in the condensed state.
