Soot Oxidation over CeO2 or Ag/CeO2 : Influences of Bulk Oxygen Vacancies and Surface Oxygen Vacancies on Activity and Stability of the Catalyst

Treasure-bowl style bifunctional site in cerium-tungsten hetero-clusters for superior solar-driven hydrogen production

Electrochemical water splitting powered by renewable energy sources hold potential for clean hydrogen production. However, there is still persistent challenges such as low solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency and sluggish oxygen evolution reactions. Here, we address the poor kinetics by studying and strengthening the coupling between Ce and W, and concurrently establishing Ce-W bi-atomic clusters on P,N-doped carbon (WN/WC-CeO2-x@PNC) with a "treasure-bowl" style. The bifunctional active sites are established using a novel and effective self-sacrificial strategy involving in situ induced defect formation. In addition, by altering the coupling of the W(d)-N(p) and W(d)-Ce(f) orbitals in the WN/WC-CeO2-x supramolecular clusters, we are able to disrupt the linear relationship between the binding energies of reaction intermediates, a key to obtain high catalytic performance for transition metals. Through the confinement of the WN/WC-CeO2-x composite hetero-clusters within the sub-nanometre spaces of hollow nano-bowl-shaped carbon reactors, a stable and efficient hydrogen production via water electrolysis could be achieved. When assembled together with a solar GaAs triple junction solar cell, a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 18.92% in alkaline media could be realized. We show that the key to establish noble metal free catalysts with high efficiency lies in the fine-tuning of the metal-metal interface, forming regions with near optimal adsorption energies for the reaction intermediates participating in water electrolysis.

Catalytic degradation of benzene over non-thermal plasma coupled Co-Ni binary metal oxide nanosheet catalysts

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) has been demonstrated as one of the promising technologies that can degrade volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under ambient condition. However, one of the key challenges of VOCs degradation in NTP is its relatively low mineralization rate, which needs to be addressed by introducing catalysts. Therefore, the design and optimization of catalysts have become the focus of NTP coupling catalysis research. In this work, a series of two-dimensional nanosheet Co-Ni metal oxides were synthesized by microwave method and investigated for the catalytic oxidation of benzene in an NTP-catalysis coupling system. Among them, Co₂Ni₁O_x achieves 60% carbon dioxide (CO₂) selectivity (S_CO2) when the benzene removal efficiency (RE_benzene) reaches more than 99%, which is a significant enhancement compared with the CO₂ selectivity obtained without any catalysts (38%) under the same input power. More intriguingly, this S_CO2 is also significantly higher than that of single metal oxides, NiO or Co₃O₄, which is only around 40%. Such improved performance of this binary metal oxide catalyst is uniquely attributed to the synergistic effects of Co and Ni in Co₂Ni₁O_x catalyst. The introduction of Co₂Ni₁O_x was found to promote the generation of acrolein significantly, one of the key intermediates found in NTP alone system reported previously, suggest the benzene ring open reaction is promoted. Compared with monometallic oxides NiO and Co₃O₄, Co₂Ni₁O_x also shows higher active oxygen proportion, better oxygen mobility, and stronger low-temperature redox capability. The above factors result in the improved catalytic performance of Co₂Ni₁O_x in the NTP coupling removal of benzene.

Effects of chemical etching and reduction activation of CeO2 nanorods supported ruthenium catalysts on CO oxidation

In this work, pristine and NaBH₄ etched CeO₂ nanorods supported ruthenium (Ru) catalysts were synthesized and employed to investigate the effects of chemical etching and reduction activation treatment on CO oxidation. With 1 wt% Ru loading, the CeO₂ nanorods supported catalyst samples, after 6 wt% NaBH₄ etching treatment, showed significantly promoted H₂ consumption under 100 °C and low apparent activation energy (i.e., E_a ∼ 31.2 kJ/mol) for CO oxidation. In-situ CO-DRIFTS profiles revealed that, for the reduced sample, the observed CO adsorption at ∼ 2020 cm^-1 at 40 °C may be related to a strong RuO_x-CeO₂ interaction induced by the NaBH₄ etching treatment, which was supported by the oxygen vacancy analysis results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO-temperature programmed desorption. The enriched surface defects on CeO₂ support due to the chemical etching and reduction treatments are believed to promote the interaction between RuO_x species and CeO₂, which is responsible for the enhanced activity of CO oxidation.

Enhanced Catalytic Soot Oxidation by Ce-Based MOF-Derived Ceria Nano-Bar with Promoted Oxygen Vacancy

As CeO2 is a useful catalyst for soot elimination, it is important to develop CeO2 with higher contact areas, and reactivities for efficient soot oxidation and catalytic soot oxidation are basically controlled by structures and surface properties of catalysts. Herein, a Ce-Metal organic framework (MOFs) consisting of Ce and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) is employed as the precursor as CeBTC exhibits a unique bar-like high-aspect-ratio morphology, which is then transformed into CeO2 with a nanoscale bar-like configuration. More importantly, this CeO2 nanobar (CeONB) possesses porou, and even hollow structures, as well as more oxygen vacancies, enabling CeONB to become a promising catalyst for soot oxidation. Thus, CeONB shows a much higher catalytic activity than commercial CeO2 nanoparticle (comCeO) for soot oxidation with a significantly lower ignition temperature (Tig). Moreover, while soot oxidation by comCeO leads to production of CO together with CO2, CeONB can completely convert soot to CO2. The tight contact mode also enables CeONB to exhibit a very low Tig of 310 °C, whereas the existence of NO also enhances the soot oxidation by CeONB to reduce the Tig. The mechanism of NO-assisted soot oxidation is also examined, and validated by DRIFTS to identify the formation and transformation of nitrogen-containing intermediates. CeONB is also recyclable over many consecutive cycles and maintained its high catalytic activity for soot oxidation. These results demonstrate that CeONB is a promising and easily prepared high-aspect-ratio Ce-based catalyst for soot oxidation.

Effect of Ag doping on Pd/Ag-CeO2 catalysts for CO and C3H6 oxidation

To achieve high fuel efficiency and low emission in automobiles, it is necessary to develop highly active diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs). Pd/CeO₂ catalysts have been widely used as active catalysts for CO and C₃H₆ oxidation reactions. Additionally, Ag has been reported to enhance the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of CeO₂, which contributes to the oxidation ability of Pd/CeO₂. In this study, Pd/Ag-CeO₂ catalysts were used for CO and C₃H₆ oxidation reactions. When CeO₂ was doped with appropriate amounts of Ag, reducibility and CO desorption rate were increased, which confirmed the high OSCs of Ag-doped catalysts. However, Ag particles were formed and the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ratio decreased when CeO₂ was doped with excess amounts of Ag. In addition, reduced Pd (Pd⁰), which is an active species for C₃H₆ oxidation, was formed and maintained even under oxidative reaction conditions. Since the removal of C₃H₆ is important for the oxidation of CO and C₃H₆, the catalyst with the highest Pd⁰ fraction (Pd/0.1Ag-CeO₂ and Pd/0.3Ag-CeO₂) presented improved catalytic activity. Consequently, the optimal amount of Ag enhanced the OSC of Pd/Ag-CeO₂ catalysts and formed active Pd⁰ species under oxidative conditions, which resulted in the excellent catalytic activity of Pd/Ag-CeO₂ for the CO and C₃H₆ oxidation reaction.

Silver/silver halide supported on mesoporous ceria particles and photo-CWPO degradation under visible light for organic compounds in acrylonitrile wastewater

Silver/silver halide supported on ordered mesoporous ceria particles (Ag/AgCl/CeO2) were rapidly prepared by microwave-assisted soft template method, deposition precipitation method and photoreduction method, using cerium nitrate and silver nitrate as raw materials and block copolymer F127 as a template. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the catalyst were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption and UV-Vis Drs. Catalytic wet peroxide system assisted with visible light photocatalysis (photo-CWPO) was conducted to investigate the performance of organics degradation by Ag/AgCl/CeO2 as a catalyst in acrylonitrile wastewater. The results showed that the Ag/AgCl/CeO2 prepared has an ordered mesoporous structure, Ag and AgCl are formed on the surface of CeO2, with a specific surface area of 302.6-336.2 m2 g-1 and the average pore size is 8.04-8.90 nm. There is a strong absorption in the visible region and a band gap of 2.9 eV. The Ag/AgCl/CeO2 catalyst has higher catalytic performance in the photo-CWPO system than in the CWPO system alone. Ag loading, catalyst and H2O2 dosage, and pH value can affect the COD removal. When the concentration of COD in acrylonitrile wastewater was 500 mg L-1, the amount of catalyst was 200 mg, the amount of H2O2 (30%) was 8 mL, and the reaction time was 60 min, the COD removal reached 90%.

Catalytic Materials for Gasoline Particulate Filters Soot Oxidation

The energy efficiency of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines is leading to a continuous increase in GDI engine vehicle population. Consequently, their particulate matter (soot) emissions are also becoming a matter of concern. As required for diesel engines, to meet the limits set by regulations, catalyzed particulate filters are considered as an effective solution through which soot could be trapped and burnt out. However, in contrast to diesel application, the regeneration of gasoline particulate filters (GPF) is critical, as it occurs with almost an absence of NOx and under oxygen deficiency. Therefore, in the recent years it was of scientific interest to develop efficient soot oxidation catalysts that fit such particular gasoline operating conditions. Among them ceria- and perovskite-based formulations are emerging as the most promising materials. This overview summarizes the very recent academic contributions focusing on soot oxidation materials for GDI, in order to point out the most promising directions in this research area.

Chemisorbed Superoxide Species Enhanced the High Catalytic Performance of Ag/Co3O4 Nanocubes for Soot Oxidation

The respective action mode between surface-adsorbed oxygen and bulk lattice oxygen during catalytic soot oxidation is still not fully recognized. Herein, a series of Ag-loaded Co₃O₄ catalysts with different Ag loading amounts were prepared by the impregnation method, and 5% Ag/Co₃O₄ presented competitive catalytic activity toward soot combustion with a T₅₀ below 290 °C in 10% O₂/N₂. This remarkable improvement in catalytic performance could be primarily attributed to the enhanced Ag-Co₃O₄ metal-support interaction induced by the formation of uniform, dispersive, and suitable size metallic Ag nanoparticles. The activation, activity, consumption-regeneration, identification, and reaction of surface-adsorbed oxygen along with the activity of bulk lattice oxygen were characterized by various designed and in situ techniques. The results demonstrated that the chemisorbed superoxide species (O₂^-) play the potentially responsible role for boosting soot combustion, while the bulk lattice oxygen is much less active within the tested temperatures, inducing a negligible activity contribution. Moreover, soot-temperature programmed reduction, isothermal kinetic study, and density functional theory calculation provided supplementary support for the enhancement effect of Ag-Co₃O₄ combination in the activation and utilization of surface-adsorbed oxygen. The overall objective of this work is to identify the role of surface-adsorbed oxygen and bulk lattice oxygen for soot oxidation over Ag/Co₃O₄ catalysts.

Catalytic wet peroxide degradation of acrylonitrile wastewater by ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO2: synthesis, performance and kinetics

Ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO2 catalysts have been successfully synthesized by a microwave assisted soft template method. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the catalyst were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, EDS, TEM and XPS. The study of catalytic performance and reaction kinetics of organic matter degradation in acrylonitrile wastewater was performed in a catalytic wet peroxide (CWPO) system. The degradation pathways of organic matter in acrylonitrile wastewater were elucidated by temporal evolution of intermediates and final products detected by GC/MS analysis along with a continuous flow experiment study. The results show that the Ag/CeO2 has an ordered mesoporous structure, the specific surface area is 91.4-118.2 m2 g-1 and the average pore size is 12.63-16.86 nm. 0.4-Ag/CeO2 showed the best catalytic performance, the COD removal rate reached 94.6%, which was 30% higher than that of CeO2. The degradation is in accordance with the second-order reaction kinetics of the Arrhenius empirical model and Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. However the latter fits better, and the linear correlation coefficient R 2 is more than 0.98, which describes the adsorption catalytic mechanism of Ag/CeO2. According to the analysis by GC/MS, the organic compounds in acrylonitrile wastewater oxidized into intermediate compounds and other small compounds, then are further oxidized into carbon dioxide and water. The catalytic activity of Ag/CeO2 was the result of the combination of Lewis acid-base position of CeO2 and redox cycle of Ce3+/Ce4+.

Surface hydrogen bond network spatially confined BiOCl oxygen vacancy for photocatalysis

Rational engineering of oxygen vacancy (V_O) at atomic precision is the key to comprehensively understanding the oxygen chemistry of oxide materials for catalytic oxidations. Here, we demonstrate that V_O can be spatially confined on the surface through a sophisticated surface hydrogen bond (HB) network. The HB network is constructed between a hydroxyl-rich BiOCl surface and polyprotic phosphoric acid, which remarkably decreases the formation energy of surface V_O by selectively weakening the metal-oxygen bonds in a short range. Thus, surface-confined V_O enables us to unambiguously distinguish the intrafacial and suprafacial oxygen species associated with NO oxidation in two classical catalytic systems. Unlike randomly distributed bulk V_O that benefits the thermocatalytic NO oxidation and lattice O diffusion by the dominant intrafacial mechanism, surface V_O is demonstrated to favor the photocatalytic NO oxidation through a suprafacial scheme by energetically activating surface O₂, which should be attributed to the spatial confinement nature of surface V_O.

Potential of Ceria-Zirconia-Based Materials in Carbon Soot Oxidation for Gasoline Particulate Filters

ZrO2 and Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 mixed oxides were prepared and tested in the oxidation of carbon soot at different oxygen partial pressures and degrees of catalyst/soot contact to investigate their activity under typical gasoline direct injection (GDI) operating conditions. Under reductive atmospheres, generation of oxygen vacancies occurs in Ce0.8Zr0.2O2, while no reduction is observed on ZrO2. Both materials can oxidize carbon under high oxygen partial pressures; however, at low oxygen partial pressures, the presence of carbon can contribute to the reduction of the catalyst and formation of oxygen vacancies, which can then be used for soot oxidation, increasing the overall performance. This mechanism is more efficient in Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 than ZrO2, and depends heavily on the interaction and the degree of contact between soot and catalyst. Thus, the ability to form oxygen vacancies at lower temperatures is particularly helpful to oxidize soot at low oxygen partial pressures, and with higher CO2 selectivity under conditions typically found in GDI engine exhaust gases.

Study on oxidation activity of Ce-Mn-K composite oxides on diesel soot

As an effective method, diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology has a great contribution in reducing soot emissions from diesel engines. To achieve passive regeneration of DPF at low temperatures, K-doped Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂ catalysts were synthesized using sol–gel method. The effect of K-doped catalysts-K_z–Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂-on the oxidation of soot had been studied by thermogravimetric analysis, and the corresponding catalytic properties were evaluated based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H₂-TPR), O₂ temperature programmed desorption (O₂-TPD) Raman spectroscopy (Raman), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Fourier-Transform-Infrared (FTIR).The results showed that K doping facilitated the oxidation of diesel particulate matter, which was indicated by the entire mass loss curve shifting to lower temperatures. K_0.2–Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂ showed the best performance among the series of K-doped catalysts. Compared with the findings for Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂, the ignition temperature of soot oxidation (T_i) had been lowered by 28 ℃, and the maximum peak combustion temperature (T_m) of the dry soot decreased by 61 °C. Furthermore, compared with the Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂-catalyzed reaction, K doping led to a lower activation energy and significantly improved pre-exponential factor. The minimum reaction activation energy of 27.46 kJ/mol was exhibited by K_0.2–Ce_0.5Mn_0.5O₂.

Tuning the oxygen release properties of CeO2-based catalysts by metal–support interactions for improved gasoline soot combustion

CeO₂-supported Cu and Rh catalysts showed high soot combustion activities by their high oxygen release properties depending on moderate metal–oxygen bond energy.

Ag/CeO2 Composites for Catalytic Abatement of CO, Soot and VOCs

Nowadays catalytic technologies are widely used to purify indoor and outdoor air from harmful compounds. Recently, Ag–CeO2 composites have found various applications in catalysis due to distinctive physical-chemical properties and relatively low costs as compared to those based on other noble metals. Currently, metal–support interaction is considered the key factor that determines high catalytic performance of silver–ceria composites. Despite thorough investigations, several questions remain debating. Among such issues, there are (1) morphology and size effects of both Ag and CeO2 particles, including their defective structure, (2) chemical and charge state of silver, (3) charge transfer between silver and ceria, (4) role of oxygen vacancies, (5) reducibility of support and the catalyst on the basis thereof. In this review, we consider recent advances and trends on the role of silver–ceria interactions in catalytic performance of Ag/CeO2 composites in low-temperature CO oxidation, soot oxidation, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) abatement. Promising photo- and electrocatalytic applications of Ag/CeO2 composites are also discussed.
