Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Pyrene-Based Light-Emitting Monomers: Highly Pure-Blue-Fluorescent, Cruciform-Shaped Architectures

Transforming Hetera-Buckybowls into Chiral Conjugated Polycycles Incorporating Epoxycyclooctadiene: a Two-Step Approach

Chiral π-conjugated polycycles have garnered increasing attention due to versatile applications in optoelectronic materials and biological sciences. In this study, we report the synthesis of chiral π-conjugated polycycles incorporating a chiral epoxycyclooctadiene moiety. Our synthetic strategy capitalizes on the novel reactions of hetera-buckybowl triselenasumanene (TSS) and is achieved in two-step manner. Firstly, the TSS is regio-selectively transformed into its ortho-quinone form. Subsequently, the nucleophilic addition reactions of TSS ortho-quinone by phenylethynides are metal ion-dependent. When utilizing (phenylethynyl)magnesium bromide as the nucleophile, two phenylethynyls are furnished onto the edged benzene ring of TSS. When the nucleophile is (phenylethynyl)lithium, a cascade of nucleophilic addition, intermolecular electron-transfer, ring-opening, and tetradehydro-Diels-Alder (TDDA) reactions occur sequentially in one-pot, ultimately affording chiral π-conjugated polycycles featuring the epoxycyclooctadiene moiety as an integral part of their backbones. This work represents a step forward in the synthesis of chiral π-conjugated polycycles using TSS as synthon.

One-Pot Synthesis of Pyreno[2,1-b]furan Molecules with Two-Photon Absorption Properties

The development of large π-conjugated polycyclic heteroaromatic materials is of immense interest, both in the academic as well as the industrial community. Herein, we present the efficient one-pot synthesis of novel pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules from a newly designed intermediate, which display intense green emission (505-516 nm) in solution and a large red shift emission (625-640 nm) in the solid state, because of strong π-π stacking. More interestingly, the compounds exhibit novel two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, and the TPA cross-section (δ) value was increased to 533 GM by regulating the electronic effects of the substituents of the pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules. This study not only offers a facile strategy for constructing new pyrene-fused luminescence materials with two-photon absorption properties but also provides a new chemical intermediate that opens up a new pathway to advanced materials.

Intermolecular Hydrogen-Bond-Assisted Solid-State Dual-Emission Molecules with Mechanical Force-Induced Enhanced Emission

Hydrogen bonds not only play a crucial role in the life sciences but also endow molecules with fantastic physical and chemical properties, which help in the realization of their high-tech applications. This work presents an efficient strategy for achieving highly efficient solid-state dual-emission blue emitters with mechanical force-induced enhanced emission properties via intermolecular hydrogen bonds via novel pyrene-based intermediates, namely, 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-2,7-dihydroxypyrene (1) and 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-2-hydroxypyrene (2), prepared via hydroxylation and bromination of pyrene in high yields. Moreover, further use of a classical Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction affords new pyrene-based luminescent materials 3-5, which display high thermal stability (in range of 336-447 °C), blue emission (<463 nm), and high quantum yields in solution. Interestingly, with the monosubstituted hydroxyl (OH) or methoxy (OMe) group located at position 2 of pyrene, compounds 4a and 5 display exciting dual emission with mechanical force-induced enhanced emission properties, due to the presence of several hydrogen-bond interactions. Moreover, this series of compounds exhibits numerous advantages, for example, deeper blue emission with a narrower full width at half-maximum, a stronger steric effect, and higher hydrophilicity. Thus, these novel bromopyrene intermediates and related pyrene-based luminescent materials will pave the way for further exploration of novel organic solid-state luminescent materials for potential application in organic electronics, bioimaging, chemosensors, etc.

2- and 2,7-Substituted para-N-Methylpyridinium Pyrenes: Syntheses, Molecular and Electronic Structures, Photophysical, Electrochemical, and Spectroelectrochemical Properties and Binding to Double-Stranded (ds) DNA

Two N-methylpyridinium compounds and analogous N-protonated salts of 2- and 2,7-substituted 4-pyridyl-pyrene compounds were synthesised and their crystal structures, photophysical properties both in solution and in the solid state, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties were studied. Upon methylation or protonation, the emission maxima are significantly bathochromically shifted compared to the neutral compounds, although the absorption maxima remain almost unchanged. As a result, the cationic compounds show very large apparent Stokes shifts of up to 7200 cm-1 . The N-methylpyridinium compounds have a single reduction at ca. -1.5 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in MeCN. While the reduction process was reversible for the 2,7-disubstituted compound, it was irreversible for the mono-substituted one. Experimental findings are complemented by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Furthermore, the N-methylpyridinium compounds show strong interactions with calf thymus (ct)-DNA, presumably by intercalation, which paves the way for further applications of these multi-functional compounds as potential DNA-bioactive agents.

2-Phenylbenzoxazole derivatives as solid-state fluorescence emitters: Influence of steric hindrance and hydrogen bonding on the optical properties

Six new 2-phenylbenzoxazole (PBO) derivatives, bearing either a methoxy or hydroxy group at position 5, were prepared via an efficient one-step synthesis that allowed both analogues to be obtained in equal proportions. These PBO derivatives also differed by the presence or absence of an alkyl substituent at the para-position of the phenyl group. In organic solutions, all six compounds were strongly fluorescent in the near-UV range. In the solid state, the 5-methoxy derivatives emitted bright light, ranging from violet to deep blue according to the substitution of the phenyl group. The presence of a bulky tert-butyl group indeed resulted in the separation of molecules, but also led to a deviation from molecular planarity. Remarkably, the introduction of a methyl group had a far more beneficial effect on the optical properties. With regard to the hydroxy derivatives, none of them was photoluminescent, probably due to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the crystals. The 50:50 mixtures of methoxy and hydroxy analogues showed acceptable emission properties in the solid state. The substitution pattern also influenced the crystal habit of the pure compounds and the crystallinity of the mixtures. These cheap molecules could be adapted to suit a variety of applications in the field of photoluminescent materials.

Exploiting a multicomponent domino reaction strategy for the tailoring of versatile environmentally sensitive fluorophore-based nicotinonitriles incorporating pyrene and fluorene moieties

A simplistic and highly effective protocol for the synthesis of a new class of poly-functionalized innovative nicotinonitriles incorporating pyrene and/or fluorene moieties has been developed through the domino four-component condensation reaction of 1-(pyren-1-yl)ethanone/1-(9H-fluoren-2-yl)ethanone, numerous aromatic aldehydes, and 3-oxo-3-(pyren-1-yl)propanenitrile/3-(9H-fluoren-2-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile and ammonium acetate in acetic acid as a reaction medium. The advantages of this approach are the short reaction time, excellent yield, and the easy experimental workup that affords substrate diversity and operative competence under metal-free reaction conditions for the formation of C–C and C–N bonds. The substituent effects on the photophysical property-based absorption and the emission of the synthesized compounds in dichloromethane have been well-investigated. Strong absorption quenching of around 100 nm was observed when substitution of the benzene ring at the C₄-position of the pyridine moiety occurred with an electron-donating (–N(CH₃)₂) group. All of the newly synthesized nicotinonitrile derivatives showed strong blue-green fluorescence emission with maxima in the range between 420–630 nm. These highly pronounced emission spectra will help this family of compounds to find application in many areas and the field of materials science.

Visible-light harvesting pyrene-based MOFs as efficient ROS generators

The utilization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in organic transformations is of great interest due to their superior oxidative abilities under mild conditions. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as photosensitizers to transfer molecular oxygen to ROS for photochemical synthesis. However, visible-light responsive MOFs for oxygen activation remains scarce. Now we design and synthesize two porous MOFs, namely, PCN-822(M) (M = Zr, Hf), which are constructed by a 4,5,9,10-(K-region) substituted pyrene-based ligand, 4,4',4'',4'''-((2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetrayl)tetrakis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))-tetrabenzoate (BPETB^4-). With the extended π-conjugated pyrene moieties isolated on the struts, the derived MOFs are highly responsive to visible light, possessing a broad-band adsorption from 225-650 nm. As a result, the MOFs can be applied as efficient ROS generators under visible-light irradiation, and the hafnium-based MOF, PCN-822(Hf), can promote the oxidation of amines to imines by activating molecular oxygen via synergistic photo-induced energy and charge transfer.

Alkyloxy modified pyrene fluorophores with tunable photophysical and crystalline properties

Alkyloxy modified 4,5,9,10-tetrasubstituted pyrenes display tunable photophysical and crystalline properties depending on the alkyl chains attached at the polyaromatic core.

2,4,5,7,9,10-Hexaethynylpyrenes: Synthesis, Properties, and Self-Assembly

A series of 2,4,5,7,9,10-hexaethynylpyrenes was synthesized using 2,7,9,10-tetrabromopyrene-4,5-dione as the key intermediate. The effects of the position and number of the ethynyl groups on the physicochemical properties of the corresponding pyrenes were clarified by comparison with 4,5,9,10-tetraethynylpyrene and 2,7-diethynylpyrene derivatives. The prepared hexaethynylpyrenes that bear benzene moieties self-assemble via π-π stacking in solution and/or the condensed phase.

Surface-confined [2 + 2] cycloaddition towards one-dimensional polymers featuring cyclobutadiene units

Surface-confined synthesis has been offering a wide range of opportunities for the construction of novel molecular nanostructures. Exploring new types of on-surface coupling reactions is considered essential for being able to deliberately tune the materials properties. Here, we report on the formation of a covalent C-C bonding motif, namely 1,3-cyclobutadiene, via surface-confined [2 + 2] cycloaddition between pyrene moieties using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. By employing a hydrogen dosing treatment together with low-temperature activation, we were able to both eliminate residual byproducts and obtain covalent 1D polymers through the formation of 1,3-cyclobutadiene units. The resulting C-C bonding motif has so far hardly been explored in surface chemistry and substantial evidence is provided that the hydrogen treatment is crucial towards the removal of byproducts in surface-confined polymerization.

NCN-Coordinating Ligands based on Pyrene Structure with Potential Application in Organic Electronics

Five novel derivatives of pyrene, substituted at positions 1,3,6,8 with 4-(2,2-dimethylpropyloxy)pyridine (P1), 4-decyloxypyridine (P2), 4-pentylpyridine (P3), 1-decyl-1,2,3-triazole (P4), and 1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazole (P5), are obtained through a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction or Cu^I -catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, respectively, and characterized thoroughly. TGA measurements reveal the high thermal stability of the compounds. Pyrene derivatives P1-P5 all show photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (Φ) of approximately 75 % in solution. Solid-state photo- and electroluminescence characteristics of selected compounds as organic light-emitting diodes are tested. In the guest-host configuration, two matrixes, that is, poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and a binary matrix consisting of PVK and 2-tert-butylphenyl-5-biphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) (50:50 wt %), are applied. The diodes show red, green, or blue electroluminescence, depending on both the compound chemical structure and the actual device architecture. In addition, theoretical studies (DFT and TD-DFT) provide a deeper understanding of the experimental results.

A Dual-Signaling Ferrocene-Pyrene Dyad: Triple-Mode Recognition of the Cu(II) Ions in Aqueous Medium

We report a structure of ferrocene-pyrene conjugate (1) comprising electro and photo-active dual-signaling units. In particular, 1 upon interaction with Cu(II), displays selectively one-photon fluorescence quenching, but it shows two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section 1230 GM (at 780 nm). Further, 1 displayed two irreversible oxidative waves at 0.39 V and 0.80 V (vs Ag/AgCl), in the electrochemical analysis which upon addition of Cu²⁺, led to the negative potential shift in both the oxidative waves to appear at 0.25 V and 0.68 V. The triple mode changes in presence of Cu(II) suggesting the possible application of 1 for the detection of Cu(II) in aqueous media. Graphical Abstract.

Functionalization of Pyrene To Prepare Luminescent Materials-Typical Examples of Synthetic Methodology

Pyrene-based π-conjugated materials are considered to be an ideal organic electro-luminescence material for application in semiconductor devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and so forth. However, the great drawback of employing pyrene as an organic luminescence material is the formation of excimer emission, which quenches the efficiency at high concentration or in the solid-state. Thus, in order to obtain highly efficient optical devices, scientists have devoted much effort to tuning the structure of pyrene derivatives in order to realize exploitable properties by employing two strategies, 1) introducing a variety of moieties at the pyrene core, and 2) exploring effective and convenient synthetic strategies to functionalize the pyrene core. Over the past decades, our group has mainly focused on synthetic methodologies for functionalization of the pyrene core; we have found that formylation/acetylation or bromination of pyrene can selectly lead to functionalization at K-region by Lewis acid catalysis. Herein, this Minireview highlights the direct synthetic approaches (such as formylation, bromination, oxidation, and de-tert-butylation reactions, etc.) to functionalize the pyrene in order to advance research on luminescent materials for organic electronic applications. Further, this article demonstrates that the future direction of pyrene chemistry is asymmetric functionalization of pyrene for organic semiconductor applications and highlights some of the classical asymmetric pyrenes, as well as the latest breakthroughs. In addition, the photophysical properties of pyrene-based molecules are briefly reviewed. To give a current overview of the development of pyrene chemistry, the review selectively covers some of the latest reports and concepts from the period covering late 2011 to the present day.

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines: syntheses, structures, optical properties, electrochemistry and electroluminescence

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines (2a–2e and 3py) were designed and synthesized. These pyrene-based triarylamines exhibit excellent photoelectric properties and are potentially functional materials for devices.

A supramolecular approach to metal ion sensing: cystine-based designer systems for Cu2+, Hg2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ sensing

Here, we demonstrate an emergent property from a mixture of two simple cystine containing molecules. The 1 : 1 mixture of pyrene-labelled S1 and tryptophan appended S2 form the heterodimeric system S1 : S2, which shows a unique metal binding ability.

Iron(iii) bromide catalyzed bromination of 2-tert-butylpyrene and corresponding position-dependent aryl-functionalized pyrene derivatives

Planar–rotor architecture based pyrene–vinyl–tetraphenylethylene conjugated systems: photophysical properties and aggregation behavior

Synthesis and photophysical properties of pyrene-based green fluorescent dyes: butterfly-shaped architectures

A few pyrene-based fluorescent compounds were synthesized using Pd/Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction. Photophysical properties of the π-conjugated pyrene derivatives were studied and the results indicate materials with high quantum efficiency and high extinction coefficient. No π stacking was observed in the crystal lattice. The molecules described here may be useful in developing sensors or imaging agents.
