Accessing Diverse Cross-Benzoin and α-Siloxy Ketone Products via Acyl Substitution Chemistry

An approach to diverse cross-benzoin and α-siloxy ketone products which leverages a simple yet underutilized C-C bond disconnection strategy is reported. Acyl substitution of readily accessible α-siloxy Weinreb amides with organolithium compounds enables access to a broad scope of aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, alkenyl, and alkynyl derivatives. Enantiopure benzoins can be accessed via a chiral pool approach, and the utility of accessible cross-benzoins and α-siloxy ketones is highlighted in a suite of downstream synthetic applications.

An unusually stable chlorophosphite: What makes BIFOP-Cl so robust against hydrolysis?

Two chlorophosphites, the biphenyl-based BIFOP-Cl and the diphenyl ether-based O-BIFOP-Cl, exhibit striking differences regarding their reaction with water. While BIFOP-Cl is nearly completely unreactive, its oxo-derivative O-BIFOP-Cl reacts instantly with water, yielding a tricyclic hydrocarbon unit after rearrangement. The analysis of the crystal structure of O-BIFOP-Cl and BIFOP-Cl revealed that the large steric demand of encapsulating fenchane units renders the phosphorus atom nearly inaccessible by nucleophilic reagents, but only for BIFOP-Cl. In addition to the steric effect, a hypervalent P(III)-O interaction as well as an electronic conjugation effect causes the high reactivity of O-BIFOP-Cl. A DFT study of the hydrolysis in BIFOP-Cl verifies a higher repulsive interaction to water and a decreased leaving tendency of the chloride nucleofuge, which is caused by the fenchane units. This high stability of BIFOP-Cl against nucleophiles supports its application as a chiral ligand, for example, in Pd catalysts.

Quantifying N-heterocyclic carbenes as umpolung catalysts in the benzoin reaction: balance between nucleophilicity and electrophilicity

Organocatalytic umpolung: N-heterocyclic carbenes and beyond

The umpolung strategy encompasses all the methods that make organic molecules react in an inverse manner compared to their innate polarity-driven reactivity. This concept entered the field of organocatalysis when it was recognized that N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) can provide catalytic access to acyl anion equivalents. Since then, tremendous efforts have followed to develop a broad variety of NHC-catalyzed reactions. In addition to this, more recent research developments have shown that other families of organocatalysts are also able to mediate transformations in which inversion of polarity is involved. This tutorial review aims at offering a didactic overview of organocatalytic umpolung and should serve as an inspiration for further progress in this field.

Charge-density distribution in hydrogen methylphosphonates of calcium and lithium

Two new crystal structures, calcium bis(hydrogen methylphosphonate), Ca(CH3PO3H)2, and lithium hydrogen methylphosphonate, Li(CH3PO3H), have been obtained, and the experimental and theoretical charge densities, as well as their topological properties, are reported. Both compounds display layered structures. Each hydrogen methylphosphonate anion coordinates three metal cations in the calcium compound and four in the lithium one. Weak polarization of oxygen lone pairs is observed, with lithium showing somewhat stronger polarization strength than calcium. The reported topological properties from the density functional theory (DFT) and X-ray approach are consistent with each other. In both structures the P—O bonds have a significant share of ionic character. The hyperconjugation effects within the phosphonate group are quenched upon coordination of the metal cations.

Lithium phosphonate umpolung catalysts: Do fluoro substituents increase the catalytic activity?

Fluorinated and nonfluorinated phosphonates are employed as precatalysts in lithium phosphonate catalyzed cross benzoin couplings. Surprisingly, a decreased catalytic activity for the fluorinated precatalysts compared to the nonfluorinated systems is observed. Furthermore, the ring size of six, seven and nine membered ring catalysts appears not to be crucial for their catalytic activity.
