Abstract
Merocyanines, owing to their readily tunable electronic structure, are arguably the most versatile functional dyes, with ample opportunities for tailored design via variations of both the donor/acceptor (D/A) end groups and π-conjugated polymethine chain. A plethora of spectral properties, such as strong solvatochromism, high polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities, and sensitizing capacity, motivates extensive studies for their applications in light-converting materials for optoelectronics, nonlinear optics, optical storage, fluorescent probes, etc. Evidently, an understanding of the intrinsic structure-property relationships is a prerequisite for the successful design of functional dyes. For merocyanines, these regularities have been explored for over 70 years, but only in the past three decades have these studies expanded beyond the theory of their color and solvatochromism toward their electronic structure in the ground and excited states. This Review outlines the fundamental principles, essential for comprehension of the variable nature of merocyanines, with the main emphasis on understanding the impact of internal (chemical structure) and external (intermolecular interactions) factors on the electronic symmetry of the D-π-A chromophore. The research on the structure and properties of merocyanines in different media is reviewed in the context of interplay of the three virtual states: nonpolar polyene, ideal polymethine, and zwitterionic polyene.

Abstract
Exploiting the potential of curcuminoids (CCMoids) as molecular platforms, a new 3.53 nm extended system (pyACCMoid, 2) has been designed in two steps by reacting a CCMoid with amino-terminal groups (NH2-CCMoid, 1, of 1.79 nm length) with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) aldehydes. CCMoid 2 contains pyrene units at both ends as anchoring groups to optimize its trapping in graphene nano-junctions created by feedback-controlled electro-burning. The measured I-V characteristics show gate-dependent behaviour at room temperature and 10 K, with increased conductance values compared to shorter CCMoids previously reported, and in agreement with DFT calculations. Our results show that the adjusted molecular design improves the conductance, as system 2 separates the conductive backbone from the anchor groups, which tend to adopt a planar configuration upon contact with the graphene electrodes. DFT calculations using Green functions of a set of different molecular conformations of 2 on graphene electrodes show a direct relationship between the units (e.g. pyrene, amide, etc.), in the molecule, through which electrons are injected and the conductance values; where the size of the spacing between the graphene electrodes contributes but is not the dominant factor, and thus, counter-intuitively the smallest spacing gives one of the lowest conductance values.

Abstract
Polymethine dyes of tetraanionic nature comprising 1,3,2-dioxaborine rings in the polymethine chain and end-groups of different electron-accepting abilities have been synthesized. They can be considered as oligomeric polymethines, where a linear conjugated π-system passes through three 1,3,2-dioxaborine units and a number of tri- and dimethine π-bridges between two end-groups. The obtained dyes exhibit near-infrared absorption and fluorescence, with molar absorption coefficients reaching as high as 564000 M-1 cm-1 in DMF, rendering them among the strongest absorbers known. The novel compounds are bright NIR fluorophores, with fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.13 in DMF. A comparative analysis of the electronic structure of the obtained dyes with respective dianionic and trianionic oligomers was conducted through quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Merocyanines, thanks to their easily adjustable electronic structure, appear to be the most versatile and promising functional dyes. Their D-π-A framework offers ample opportunities for custom design through variations in both donor/acceptor end-groups and the π-conjugated polymethine chain, and leads to a broad range of practical properties, including noticeable solvatochromism, high polarizability/hyperpolarizabilities, and the ability to sensitize various physicochemical processes. Accordingly, merocyanines are applied and extensively studied in various fields, such as light-converting materials for optoelectronics, nonlinear optics, optical storage, solar cells, fluorescent probes, and antitumor agents in photodynamic therapy. This review encompasses both classical and novel more important publications on the structure-property relationships in merocyanines, with particular emphasis on the results by A. I. Abstract
The worldwide known and employed spice of Asian origin, turmeric, receives significant attention due to its numerous purported medicinal properties. Herein, we report an optimized synthesis of curcumin and symmetric curcuminoids of aromatic (bisdemethoxycurcumin) and heterocyclic type, with yields going from good to excellent using the cyclic difluoro-boronate derivative of acetylacetone prepared by reaction of 2,4-pentanedione with boron trifluoride in THF (ca. 95%). The subsequent cleavage of the BF2 group is of significant importance for achieving a high overall yield in this two-step procedure. Such cleavage occurs by treatment with hydrated alumina (Al2O3) or silica (SiO2) oxides, thus allowing the target heptanoids obtained in high yields as an amorphous powder to be filtered off directly from the reaction media. Furthermore, crystallization instead of chromatographic procedures provides a straightforward purification step. The ease and efficiency with which the present methodology can be applied to synthesizing the title compounds earns the terms "click" and "unclick" applied to describe particularly straightforward, efficient reactions. Furthermore, the methodology offers a simple, versatile, fast, and economical synthetic alternative for the obtention of curcumin (85% yield), bis-demethoxycurcumin (78% yield), and the symmetrical heterocyclic curcuminoids (80-92% yield), in pure form and excellent yields.

Abstract
The difluoroboron β-diketonate ring is ever more used for creating bright polymethine-type fluorophores for the visible and NIR range. Here, we report the synthesis and spectral properties of a series of dianionic cyanine dyes of the rare A1-π-A-π-A1 type, with the central dioxaborine ring (A) embedded into the polymethine chain and various electron-acceptor terminal groups A1. Depending on the nature of the end group, the maxima of their intensive (with molar extinctions up to 380 000 M-1 cm-1) and narrow long-wavelength absorption band lie in the range of 530-770 nm. Their absorption and fluorescence bands are nearly mirror-like and characterized by weak solvatochromism; the marked hypsochromic shifts are observed only when going from polar aprotic solvents to methanol. The designed dianionic dyes have fluorescence quantum yields up to 92 % in the visible range, and even for the NIR dyes, the values of 18-37 % are observed in DMF.

Abstract
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties have been reported in organic molecular films. In particular, cyanine and squaraine films have been shown to exhibit ENZ properties in the visible spectral region with a strong 3rd order nonlinear optical response near the ENZ spectral region. Noting both cyanine and squaraine belong to the polymethine family, a series of six curcuminoid borondifluoride (Curc) derivatives were developed to examine whether such a polymethine character is positively correlated with the ENZ property of the organic films. Those Curc derivatives possess a Donor–Acceptor–Donor (D–A–D) architecture with acceptor, AcacBF2, located at the molecular center. The backbone of Curc is designed such that the donor strength can be tuned to transit between charge transfer (CT) and polymethine character. This balance between CT and polymethine character of the Curc series is examined based on the Lippert–Mataga plot. As donor strength in the D–A–D structure increases, CT character is less marked resulting in a more dominant polymethine character. The structural and optical properties of the Curc films with a thickness in the order of 30 nm were examined to correlate the polymethine character with the ENZ response. The results obtained in isotropic Curc thin films demonstrate that an increase of polymethine character associated with a stronger donor strength leads to an appearance/enhancement of the ENZ property in the visible spectrum range from 500 to 670 nm. Overall, this study provides useful guidelines to engineer new organic materials showing ENZ properties in a desired spectral range. Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties have been reported in organic molecular films.![]()

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of a series of covalently linked dimers of quadrupolar curcuminoid-BF2 dyes and the detailed investigation of their solvent-dependent spectroscopic and photophysical properties. In solvents of low polarity, intramolecular folding induces the formation of aggregated chromophores, the UV/Vis absorption spectra of which display the optical signature characteristic of weakly-coupled H-aggregates. The extent of folding and, in turn, of ground-state aggregation is strongly dependent on the nature of the flexible linker. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence emission spectroscopies show that the Frenkel exciton relaxes into a fluorescent symmetrical excimer state with a long lifetime. Furthermore, our in-depth studies show that a weakly emitting excimer lies on the pathway toward a photocyclomer. Two-dimensional 1 H NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) allowed the structure of the photoproduct to be established. To our knowledge, this represents the first example of a [2π+2π] photodimerization of the curcuminoid chromophore.

Abstract
In this work we present the synthesis, characterization and theoretical investigation of three boron-difluoride-curcuminoid derivatives and their covalent homodimers chemically linked through a polymethylenic chain. Low-lying electronic excited states and photophysical properties of the monomeric species have been described as the convolution of different donor-acceptor intramolecular excitations. Covalent dimers in solution can present open or folded structural conformations. Analysis of absorption profiles and computational results allow to identify the factors that control the relative stability of the two forms and rationalize its dependence with the solvent polarity. Interestingly, the strong electronic coupling in the folded forms results in low-lying excitations with sizable mixings of intra- and inter-chromophoric contributions, which cannot be described by means of the Kasha model of interacting chromophores. Our study demonstrates how decomposition of the computed excitations in terms of diabatic states can be extremely valuable in order to identify and quantify the nature of electronic transitions in the presence of several electron donor and acceptor fragments.

Abstract
The synthesis, photophysical and photoacoustic characterization for a series of nine π-extended quadrupolar curcumin dyes is presented. A systematic evaluation of the π-bridging unit including the p-phenyl, naphth-4-yl, thien-2-yl and hybrid 4-naphthathien-2-yl groups is presented. Furthermore, evaluation of the strongly donating donor-π-acceptor-π-donor quadrupolar dimethylamino terminated derivatives is also included. Select dyes exhibit excited state absorption at increased laser fluence which translates to the production of a nonlinear enhanced photoacoustic response. In particular, the bis-4-dimethylaminonaphtha-2-thien-5-yl curcuminBF2 contrast agent DMA-5 exhibits an excellent molar photoacoustics (PA) emission at both low (9.4 × 103 V M-1 ) and high (1.47 × 105 V M-1 ) laser fluence which is confirmed by its strong contrast by photoacoustic tomography (PAT). In summary, the strong absorbance and enhanced photoacoustic properties of naphthyl and thienyl curcuminoids here presented provides great promise for future photoacoustic imaging applications as demonstrated by preliminary PAT studies.
