An Overview to Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensors for the Detection of Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used extensively in plastics and resins. However, its endocrine-disrupting properties pose risks to human health and the environment. Thus, accurate and rapid detection of BPA is crucial for exposure monitoring and risk mitigation. Molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors (MIES) have emerged as a promising tool for BPA detection due to their high selectivity, sensitivity, affordability, and portability. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MIES for BPA detection. We discuss the operating principles, fabrication strategies, materials, and methods used in MIES. Key findings show that MIES demonstrate detection limits comparable or superior to conventional methods like HPLC and GC-MS. Selectivity studies reveal excellent discrimination between BPA and structural analogs. Recent innovations in nanomaterials, novel monomers, and fabrication techniques have enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. However, limitations exist in reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. While challenges remain, MIES provide a low-cost portable detection method suitable for on-site BPA monitoring in diverse sectors. Further optimization of sensor fabrication and characterization will enable the immense potential of MIES for field-based BPA detection.

In Situ Growth Intercalation Structure MXene@Anatase/Rutile TiO2 Ternary Heterojunction with Excellent Phosphoprotein Detection in Sweat

Abnormal protein phosphorylation may relate to diseases such as Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's. Therefore, the real-time detection of phosphoproteins in sweat was of great significance for the early knowledge, detection, and treatment of neurological diseases. In this work, anatase/rutile TiO₂ was in situ grown on the MXene surface to constructing the intercalation structure MXene@anatase/rutile TiO₂ ternary heterostructure as a sensing platform for detecting phosphoprotein in sweat. Here, the intercalation structure of MXene acted as electron and diffusion channels for phosphoproteins. The in situ grown anatase/rutile TiO₂ with n-n-type heterostructure provided specific adsorption sites for the phosphoproteins. The determination of phosphoprotein covered concentrations in sweat, with linear range from 0.01 to 1 mg/mL, along with a low LOD of 1.52 μM. It is worth noting that, since the macromolecular phosphoprotein was adsorbed on the surface of the material, the electrochemical signal gradually decreased with the increase of phosphoprotein concentration. In addition, the active sites in the MXene@anatase/rutile TiO₂ ternary heterojunction and synergistic effect of the heterojunction were verified by first-principle calculations to further realize the response to phosphoproteins. Additionally, the effective diffusion capacity and mobility of phosphoprotein molecules in the ternary heterojunction structure were studied by molecular dynamics simulation. Furthermore, the constructed sensing platform showed high selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability, and this newly developed sensor can detect for phosphoprotein in actual sweat samples. This satisfactory sensing strategy could be promoted to realize the noninvasive and continuous detection of sweat.

Factors Affecting the Analytical Performance of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

During the last few years, separation techniques using molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) have been developed, making certain improvements using magnetic properties. Compared to MIP, Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have high selectivity in sample pre-treatment and allow for fast and easy isolation of the target analyte. Its magnetic properties and good extraction performance depend on the MMIP synthesis step, which consists of 4 steps, namely magnetite manufacture, magnetic coating using modified components, polymerization and template desorption. This review discusses the factors that will affect the performance of MMIP as a selective sorbent at each stage. MMIP, using Fe₃O₄ as a magnetite core, showed strong superparamagnetism; it was prepared using the co-precipitation method using FeCl₃·6H₂O and FeCl₂·H₂O to obtain high magnetic properties, using NH₄OH solution added for higher crystallinity. In magnetite synthesis, the use of a higher temperature and reaction time will result in a larger nanoparticle size and high magnetization saturation, while a higher pH value will result in a smaller particle size. In the modification step, the use of high amounts of oleic acid results in smaller nanoparticles; furthermore, determining the correct molar ratio between FeCl₃ and the shielding agent will also result in smaller particles. The next factor is that the proper ratio of functional monomer, cross-linker and solvent will improve printing efficiency. Thus, it will produce MMIP with high selectivity in sample pre-treatment.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) in Sensors for Environmental and Biomedical Applications: A Review

Molecular imprinted polymers are custom made materials with specific recognition sites for a target molecule. Their specificity and the variety of materials and physical shapes in which they can be fabricated make them ideal components for sensing platforms. Despite their excellent properties, MIP-based sensors have rarely left the academic laboratory environment. This work presents a comprehensive review of recent reports in the environmental and biomedical fields, with a focus on electrochemical and optical signaling mechanisms. The discussion aims to identify knowledge gaps that hinder the translation of MIP-based technology from research laboratories to commercialization.

Latest Advances in Determination of Bisphenols with Nanomaterials, Molecularly Imprinted Polymers and Aptamer Based Electrochemical Sensors

Contamination of environmental sources such as soils, sediments and rivers and human exposure caused by several endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are considered as the most challenging issues of today's world. EDCs cover a wide variety of compounds ranging from phthalates to parabens and bisphenols (BPs) are the leading group among them. BPs are widely used during the production of different plastic materials such as food and beverage containers, toys, medical equipment and baby bottles that we use in every aspect of our lives. BPs may migrate from those products to different media under certain conditions and this situation causes chronic exposure for humans and other creatures in the environment. Especially bisphenol A (BPA) and its other analogues such as bisphenol F, bisphenol S and tetrabromobisphenol that have similar structures and are preferred as alternatives to BPA cause harmful adverse effects such as endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, genotoxicity and cytotoxicity. There are legal restrictions and prohibitions by the European Union (EU) in order to prevent possible harmful effects. Therefore, it is important to develop highly sensitive, fast, easy to use and cheap sensors for the determination of BPs in biological, environmental and commercial samples. Electrochemical sensors, which are one of the most widely, used analytical techniques, provide these conditions. Additionally, it is possible to enhance the performance of electrochemical sensors with nanomaterials, molecularly imprinted polymers or aptamer based technologies. This review aims to give comprehensive information about BPs with summarizing most recent applications of electrochemical sensors for their determination in different samples.

Selective electrochemical detection of bisphenol A using a molecularly imprinted polymer nanocomposite

A molecularly imprinted nanocomposite with covalently connected polyacrylate, β-cyclodextrin and graphene is synthesized for selective capture and electrochemical detection of bisphenol A.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor based on ZIF-8–acetylene black–chitosan nanocomposites for rutin detection

Herein, we fabricated a sensitive rutin electrochemical sensor via modifying glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and acetylene black (AB) in the presence of chitosan (CS). The electrochemical activity and experimental parameters of the ZIF-8-AB-CS/GCE sensor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under the optimal conditions, the sensor presented a reasonable linear response in the range of 0.1–10 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.004 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor possessed good reproducibility and high stability, and was successfully applied to detect rutin tablet samples with satisfactory results, which was attributed to the synergistic effect between ZIF-8 and AB. Meanwhile, the sensor displayed a potential application for detection of other analytes in real samples. Furthermore, a probable interaction mechanism was proposed to account for the interaction between rutin and the nanocomposite electrode, which was not discussed in previous reports.

A sensitive ZIF-8-AB-CS/GCE for rutin detection is constructed and the interaction between them is discussed for the first time.

Advances in sensing and biosensing of bisphenols: A review

Bisphenols (BPs) are well known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that cause adverse effects on the environment, biotic life and human health. BPs have been studied extensively because of an increasing concern for the safety of the environment and for human health. They are major raw materials for manufacturing polycarbonates, thermal papers and epoxy resins and are considered hazardous environmental contaminants. A vast array of sensors and biosensors have been developed for the sensitive screening of BPs based on carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphene and graphene oxide), quantum dots, metal and metal oxide nanocomposites, polymer nanocomposites, metal organic frameworks, ionic liquids and molecularly imprinted polymers. This review is devoted mainly to a variety of sensitive, selective and reliable sensing and biosensing methods for the detection of BPs using electrochemistry, fluorescence, colorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, luminescence, ELISAs, circular dichroism, resonance Rayleigh scattering and adsorption techniques in plastic products, food samples, food packaging, industrial wastes, pharmaceutical products, human body fluids and many other matrices. It summarizes the advances in sensing and biosensing methods for the detection of BPs since 2010. Furthermore, the article discusses challenges and future perspectives in the development of novel sensing methods for the detection of BP analogs.

Small-Molecule Dengue Virus Co-imprinting and Its Application as an Electrochemical Sensor

Polymers can be synthesized to recognize small molecules. This is achieved by introducing the target molecule during monomer self-assembly, where they can be incorporated during cross-linking polymerization. Following additional pre-processing, the material obtained can then be applied as a sensing layer for these molecules in many applications. The sensitivity of the polymers depends on the "active sites" imprinted on the surface. Increasing the number of active sites on the polymers surface can be achieved by using nanoparticles as a platform to support and concentrate the molecules for imprinting. In this work, we report the first use of dengue virus as a supporting nanoparticle to make for a more effective polymer composite sensor for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA), which is an environmental contaminant. The dengue virus has a nanoparticle size of around 100 nm and its surface provides regions where lipids and hydrophobic compounds can bind, making it an ideal support. The mixing of BPA with dengue prior to monomer self-assembly led to imprinted polymer surfaces with much higher density BPA binding sites and a limit of detection of 0.1 pm. We demonstrate that a BPA-dengue co-imprinting polymer composite sensor shows a very high sensitivity for BPA, but with lower production costs and technical requirements than other comparable methods.

Selectivity Enhancement in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Binding of Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogen-mimicking chemical that can be selectively detected in water using a chemical sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). However, the utility of BPA-MIPs in sensor applications is limited by the presence of non-specific binding sites. This study explored a dual approach to eliminating these sites: optimizing the molar ratio of the template (bisphenol A) to functional monomer (methacrylic acid) to cross-linker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), and esterifying the carboxylic acid residues outside of specific binding sites by treatment with diazomethane. The binding selectivity of treated MIPs and non-treated MIPs for BPA and several potential interferents was compared by capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection. Baclofen, diclofenac and metformin were demonstrated to be good model interferents to test all MIPs for selective binding of BPA. Treated MIPs demonstrated a significant decrease in binding of the interferents while offering high selectivity toward BPA. These results demonstrate that conventional optimization of the molar ratio, together with advanced esterification of non-specific binding sites, effectively minimizes the residual binding of interferents with MIPs to facilitate BPA sensing.
