Abstract
The ecological environment and public safety are seriously threatened by the typical phenolic contaminant hydroquinone (HQ). Here, using a straightforward physical mixing technique, we created an n-n heterojunction by uniformly immobilizing cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles on the surface of a three-dimensionally layered, flower-like structure made of tin sulfide (SnS2). Then, as photosensitizers, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to the CdS/SnS2 complex to create a type-II heterostructure of CdS/SnS2/CNTs with synergistic effects. Subsequently, the detector HQ was bound to the modified photoelectrodes, which was accompanied by the hole oxidation of the bound HQ, leading to a significant increase in the photocurrent signal, thus allowing specific and sensitive detection of HQ. Under optimized detection conditions, the proposed photoelectrochemical sensor shows a wide detection range of 0.2 to 100 μM for HQ with a detection limit as low as 0.1 μM. The high accuracy of the sensor was demonstrated by comparison with the detection results of UV-vis spectrophotometry. In addition, the photoelectrochemical sensor exhibits good reproducibility, stability, selectivity, and specificity, providing a light-driven method to detect HQ.

Abstract
UV/Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) is a multi-response technique that has been commonly used for the characterization of materials and the study of reaction mechanisms. However, it has been scarcely used for quantitative purposes. SEC allows us to obtain two analytical signals simultaneously, yielding a dual sensor in just one experiment. In the last years, our group has developed new devices useful for analysis. In this work, a SEC device in parallel configuration, based on optical fibers fixed on screen-printed electrodes, was used to determine isoprenaline in a commercial drug, using both, the electrochemical and the spectroscopic signals. In this commercial drug, isoprenaline is accompanied in solution by other compounds. Among them is sodium metabisulfite, an antioxidant that strongly interferes in the isoprenaline determination. A simple pretreatment of the drug sample by bubbling wet-air allows us to avoid the interference of metabisulfite. Here, we demonstrate again the capabilities of UV/Vis absorption SEC as double sensor for analysis and we propose a simple pretreatment to remove interfering compounds.

Abstract
Neurotransmitters as electrochemical signaling molecules are essential for proper brain function and their dysfunction is involved in several mental disorders. Therefore, the accurate detection and monitoring of these substances are crucial in brain studies. Neurotransmitters are present in the nervous system at very low concentrations, and they mixed with many other biochemical molecules and minerals, thus making their selective detection and measurement difficult. Although numerous techniques to do so have been proposed in the literature, neurotransmitter monitoring in the brain is still a challenge and the subject of ongoing research. This article reviews the current advances and trends in neurotransmitters detection techniques, including in vivo sampling and imaging techniques, electrochemical and nano-object sensing techniques for in vitro and in vivo detection, as well as spectrometric, analytical and derivatization-based methods mainly used for in vitro research. The document analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each method, with the aim to offer selection guidelines for neuro-engineering research.

Abstract
Biogenic monoamines, including catecholamines and serotonin are important hormones and neurotransmitters. Abnormal urinary levels of biogenic monoamines and their metabolites are associated with smoking, neuroendocrine tumors, as well as neurological and cardiovascular diseases. Measurements of free biogenic monoamines and their metabolites have been challenging because of low concentrations in complex biological matrices. Current methods require extensive enrichment and removal of interfering substances and can analyze only basic or acidic compounds in a single run. We developed a simple and robust dilute-and-shoot method capable of measuring 10 analytes, including free biogenic monoamines and their metabolites in human urine. The assay enables sensitive measurements of analytes within expected sample concentration ranges. To assess the assay's efficacy, we measured urinary levels of free biogenic monoamines and their metabolites in 255 non-smokers and 191 smokers. Our data show that while smokers had significantly higher urinary levels of free catecholamines and metanephrines, there was a decrease in levels of biogenic amine metabolites synthesized through the monoamine oxidase pathway - homovanillic acid and vanillylmandelic acid. The method could be used for high throughput measurement of the range of free biogenic amines and their metabolites in urine under a variety of different conditions.

Abstract
Tremella-like ZnIn2S4 (ZISt) and flower-like microsphere ZnIn2S4 (ZISm) were synthesized via a straightforward hydrothermal method. It was found that the ZISt was superior to ZISm for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing because of its large surface area and high photocatalytic activity. A composite of ZISt and graphene (GR) was prepared and used for the PEC sensing of dopamine (DA). Here DA acted as an electron donor to scavenge the hole and inhibit the charge recombination. The GR enhanced visible light absorption and accelerated electron transfer, amplifying the photocurrent signal. The strong chelating coordination interaction between DA and Zn(II) in ZISt guaranteed the selective adsorption of target analyte. Thus the resulting ZISt/GR photoelectrode showed sensitive and selective PEC response to DA. Under the optimized conditions, the linear response range was from 0.01 to 20 μM, and the detection limit was down to 0.001 μM. Additionally, the sensor had good stability and reproducibility, and it could be used for the detection of DA in real samples.

Abstract
In order to investigate the potential links between catecholamines (CAs) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), rapid and sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) methods in different ionization modes for the quantification of 14 CAs and their metabolites in rat urine without derivatization or complex sample pre-treatments were developed. After addition of the internal standard, isoproterenol, the urine samples were extracted by protein precipitation and separated on an Inertsil ODS-EP column (Shimadzu, Japan) at a flow of 1.0 ml min(-1). Tandem mass spectrometric detection was performed on a 4000Q UPLC-MS/MS in the multiple reaction monitoring mode with turbo ion spray source. Tyrosine, dopamine, noradrenaline, epinephrine, 3-methoxytyramine, normetanephrine and metanephrine were determined in positive mode, while 3,4-dihyroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, DL-3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid, DL-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl glycol, homovanillic acid, DL-4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenylglycol were determined in negative mode. The methods were examined and were found to be precise and accurate within the linearity range of the assays. The intra-day and inter-day precision and accuracy of the analytes were well within acceptance criteria (±15%). The mean extraction recoveries of analytes and internal standard were all more than 60%. The validated methods have been successfully applied to compare CAs profiles in normal and AD rats. The results indicated the urine levels of DL-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl glycol and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenylglycol in AD rats were significantly higher than those in the normal group, and the other CAs have an opposite performance. These may attribute to the difference of some enzyme activity between rats with AD and normal. Furthermore, this may be helpful in clinical diagnostics and monitor the efficacy of AD treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Organophosphorus pesticides have been widely used in agricultural production. However, the wide use of organophosphate also results in pesticide residues on the plant, which are harmful to human health because of their potential mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Therefore, it is vital to develop a sensitive and effective analysis method to control pesticide residues. RESULTS In this study, a novel molecularly imprinted capillary monolithic column was prepared using trichlorfon as the template molecule by combining non-hydrolytic sol-gel process with a molecular imprinting technique. The resulting material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared. Under capillary electrochromatography, the effects of voltage, pH, ACN content and concentration of buffer solution on the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) of imprinted capillary monolithic column were evaluated in detail. Using this prepared material as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography, a novel method of molecularly imprinted capillary electrochromatography (MICEC) for the detection of trace trichlorfon residues in vegetables was developed. Under optimal conditions, appreciable sensitivity was achieved with a LOD (S/N = 3) of 92.5 µg kg(-1) and method quantitation limit (MQL) of 305.3 µg kg(-1), respectively. The linear ranges of the calibration graph were 0.1 µg L(-1) to 10 mg L(-1). The peak area precision (RSD) for five replicate extractions of 0.01 mg L(-1) trichlorfon standard aqueous solution was 4.5%. To evaluate the accuracy of this method, the blank cucumber and cauliflower samples spiked with trichlorfon were extracted and analyzed by this method with good recoveries, ranging from 80.2% to 95.8%. Moreover, this method was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of the trichlorfon residues in leek samples. CONCLUSION With good properties of high sensitivity and simple pre-treatment, this MICEC method could provide a new tool for the rapid determination of trace trichlorfon residue in complex food samples.

Abstract
A transition metal chelate unstable at a high oxidation state, diperiodatocuprate (III) (K₅[Cu(HIO₆)₂], DPC), was synthesized and applied in the luminol-based chemiluminescence (CL) system for highly sensitive CE end-column detection of dopamine (DA). This method was based on the fact that DA enhanced the CL emission resulting from the reaction between luminol and DPC in alkaline medium. The DPC-luminol-DA CL system showed very intensive emission and very fast kinetic characteristics, thus resulting in a high sensitivity in flow-through detection mode for CE. Under optimal conditions, the linear range was 1.0 × 10⁻⁸-5.0 × 10⁻⁵ g/mL (R² = 0.9984) with a limit of detection of 6.0 × 10⁻⁹ g/mL (S/N = 3). The RSDs of the peak height and the migration time were about 4.2 and 2.4% for a standard sample at 3.0 × 10⁻⁶ g/mL (n = 5), respectively. The presented method has been successfully used for the determination of DA in commercial preparation and human urine samples after clean-up using SPE.

Abstract
We report the development of an electrochemical paper-based analytical device (ePAD) for the selective determination of dopamine (DA) in model serum sample. The ePAD device consists of three layers. In the top layer, SU-8 photoresist defines a hydrophilic sample application spot on the filter paper. The middle layer was made from transparency film and contained two holes, one for sample preconcentration and the other for the surfactant to allow transfer to the third layer. A screen-printed carbon electrode formed the bottom layer and was used for electrochemical measurements. In the absence of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the oxidation peaks of DA, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) overlapped. With the addition of SDS, the DA oxidation peak shifted to more negative values and was clearly distinguishable from AA and UA. The oxidation potential shift was presumably due to preferential electrostatic interactions between the cationic DA and the anionic SDS. Indeed, whilst the SDS-modified paper improved the DA current five-fold, the non-ionic Tween-20 and cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants had no effect or reduced the current, respectively. Furthermore, only the SDS-modified paper showed the selective shift in oxidation potential for DA. DA determination was carried out using square-wave voltammetry between -0.2 and 0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and this ePAD was able to detect DA over a linear range of 1-100 μM with a detection limit (S/N=3) of 0.37 μM. The ePAD seems suitable as a low cost, easy-to-use, portable device for the selective quantitation of DA in human serum samples.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is one of the most important catecholamine neurotransmitters in the human central nervous system in the brain and plays a key role in the functioning of the renal, hormonal, and cardiovascular systems. Abnormal levels of dopamine are related to neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease and the control and fluctuations of the amount of dopamine are extremely important in monitoring with analytical systems in the human brain. This review covers the attributes of flow-injection analysis systems with different detection devices and other related techniques for the in vitro and in vivo determination of dopamine as neurotransmitter and points out the advantages and disadvantages in the implementation thereof.

Abstract
One big challenge of fabricating nanosensors for spatially resolved electrochemical detection of neurochemicals, such as dopamine (DA), is the difficulty to assembly nanometer-scale patternable and integrated sensors. In this work we develop a novel approach to precisely manufacture nano-Au-electrode (NAE) using lithographic fabrication technique, and characterize the NAE for DA detection. A negative photoresist, SU-8, is used as a substrate and protection layer for the 127-nm Au active sensing layer. The cross surface morphology and thickness of the Au layer are imaged by scanning electron microscopy and an interference microscopy. This NAE could be precisely controlled, repeatedly fabricated and conveniently renewed for several times. The electrochemical sensitivity and selectivity of the NAE towards DA detection are significantly higher than those of a standard Au thin-film electrode. This work demonstrates that the NAE could be used as an attractive means for electrochemically sensing and recording DA.

Abstract
A simple one-step method is established for plasma determination of ibuprofen and its pharmacokinetic study. The method involves simple sample pre-treatment by dilution, rapid separation by ultrafiltration (UF) and online sensitive detection by chemiluminescence (CL) based on significant intensity enhancement of ibuprofen on the weak CL of potassium permanganate and sodium sulphite in an acidic system. The calibration curve for ibuprofen is linear in the range 0.1-50.0 µg/mL in rat plasma. Average recoveries of ibuprofen at 0.80, 12.0 and 40.0 µg/mL amounted to 98.0 ± 4.2%, 101.2 ± 3.6% and 99.3 ± 5.4%, respectively. Standard deviations of intra- and inter-day measurement precision and accuracy are within ±10.0%. The detection limit for ibuprofen is 10.0 µg/L in plasma samples. Pharmacokinetic study of ibuprofen by the validated method shows that the mean plasma drug concentration-time course confirms to a classical two-compartment open model with first-order absorption. The proposed method will be an alternative for pre-clinical pharmacokinetic study of ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive method has been developed for simultaneous analysis of three catecholamines: dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP) and norepinephrine (NE) in urine by capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with in-column fiber-optic light-emitting diode-induced fluorescence detection (ICFO-LED-IFD). Fluorescein isothiocyanate was used as the fluorescence tagged reagent for derivatization of DA, EP and NE. The CE conditions for separation of these catecholamines were systematically investigated. It was found that catecholamines could be more effectively separated by adding β-cyclodextin (β-CD) and acetonitrile (ACN) to a background electrolyte (BGE) of sodium borate. The migration times are 10.61, 10.83 and 11.14 min for DA, EP and NE, respectively and the catecholamines are completely separated within 11.5 min under the optimal condition of a BGE containing 10% v/v ACN, 20 mM β-CD and 20 mM sodium borate (pH 9.5), and an applied voltage of 13 kV. The relative standard deviations of migration time and peak area for these catecholamines are less than 0.16 and 2.0%, respectively. The limit of quantifications (LOQs) for DA, EP and NE are 3.5, 1.0 and 3.1 nM whereas the limit of detections (LODs) for DA, EP and NE are 1.0, 0.3 and 0.9 nM, respectively. Our proposed CE method provides low LOQ and LOD values. This CE-ICFO-LED-IFD methodology has been successfully applied to analyze catecholamines in human urine samples with good accuracy and satisfactory recovery.

Abstract
A rapid and simple capillary electrophoresis method coupled with chemiluminescent (CL) detection was proposed for analysis of isoniazid (ISO) based on the enhancement effect of ISO to CL emission of luminol-periodate potassium reaction. Under the optimal conditions, ISO can be assayed in the range of 7.0 × 10(-7) to 3.0 × 10(-5) g mL(-1) (R(2) = 0.9990) with a limit of detection of 3.0 × 10(-7) g mL(-1) (signal-to-noise ratio of 3). The whole analysis process can be completed within 2.5 min with a theoretical plate number of 6258. The relative standard deviations of the signal intensity and the migration time were 3.1 and 1.4% for a standard sample at 1.0 × 10(-5) g mL(-1) (n = 5), respectively. The presented novel strategy was successfully applied to the determination of ISO in commercial pharmaceutical preparations and spiked human serum samples. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Based on the quenched chemiluminescence intensity of the luminol reaction sensitized by ferrate(VI) in alkaline medium, a novel CE with on-line inhibited method for the simultaneous analysis of benzenediol isomers was developed. The ferrate(VI) solution was freshly prepared by electrochemical technique before electrophoresis. The parameters influencing detection and separation were carefully investigated. Baseline separation of benzenediols including catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone was achieved in less than 8 min with 5.0 mmol/L sodium tetraborate and 2.0 mmol/L luminol at an applied voltage of 18 kV. The LODs (S/N=3) for catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone were determined to be 8.5 x 10(-9), 8.0 x 10(-7) and 6.5 x 10(-9) mol/L, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was applied for phenolic compounds in hair dye.

Abstract
Introducing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to the running buffer further improved the sensitivity of luminol-H(2)O(2) chemiluminescence (CL) detection for CE. This has led to the development of sensitive CE-CL assays of biomedically interesting compounds. Epinephrine and norfloxacin were taken as the model analytes. Epinephrine inhibited light emission from the AuNP-catalyzed CL while norfloxacin enhanced it. The CE-CL assays had detection limits of 6.9x10(-9) M for epinephrine and 7.3x10(-9) M for norfloxacin. It was noted that in the absence of AuNPs no CE-CL analytical signal was produced by epinephrine at 4.0x10(-5) M or norfloxacin at 1.5x10(-3) M under similar experimental conditions. Fluorescence spectroscopic measurements showed that although the fluorescence excitation/emission maxima remained the same, the fluorescence lifetime of luminol increased significantly in the presence of AuNPs (tau(2) increased from 8.49+/-0.12 to 9.18+/-0.047 ns in a two-exponential fit), indicating that the excited states of luminol molecules were stabilized through the interaction between luminol molecules and AuNPs. Finally, quantitation of epinephrine and norfloxacin in biological samples such as human urine by using the present AuNP-enhanced CE-CL method was demonstrated.

Abstract
Chemiluminescence (CL) from the oxidation of luminol with potassium periodate in strong alkaline solutions was greatly enhanced by the combined effect of gallic acid, acetaldehyde and Mn(2+). The CL spectra exhibited only one emission band at 425 nm, indicating 3-aminophthalate as the emitting species. Various scavengers for superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen quenched the CL emission very efficiently (74-100%), suggesting the possible involvement of these reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the CL reactions. It is postulated that oxidation of gallic acid and acetaldehyde by periodate catalyzed by Mn(2+) generates these ROS, which then react with luminol to enhance the CL emission. We also found that the enhanced CL emission was strongly inhibited by catecholamines, probably because of their effective scavenging of ROS. Based on this observation, a simple, rapid and sensitive new CL method was developed for the determination of catecholamines. The detection limits (3sigma) for dopamine, l-dopa, norepinephrine and epinephrine were 0.63, 1.37, 0.56 and 14.3 nmol/L, respectively. The linear range was 1-10 nmol/L; relative standard deviations were 0.71-1.34% for 0.1 micromol/mL catecholamines. This CL method was applied to the determination of catecholamines in pharmaceutical injections with satisfactory results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A system was developed for the simultaneous measurement in urine of free catecholamines (i.e., dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine) and creatinine (i.e., an indicator of urine output and volume). This method was based on the use of tandem affinity/ion-pair HPLC and flow injection analysis. METHODS The free catecholamines were extracted directly from urine by using an on-line phenylboronic acid affinity column. The extracted solutes were then separated and measured by ion-pair chromatography followed by amperometric detection. Creatinine was measured by an on-line flow injection analysis system based on the Jaffe reaction, which analyzed creatinine as it eluted non-retained from the phenylboronic acid column. RESULTS Various factors were considered in the design and optimization of the phenylboronic acid column, the tandem affinity/ion-pair HPLC columns and the flow injection analysis system. The total analysis time for the final combined system was approximately 16 min per injection at 1 ml/min. This method was found to have good agreement with the expected results for control urine samples. The limits of detection for 20 microl samples (S/N=3.0) were 1.8, 1.0 and 4.3 microg/l for norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine, respectively, while the limit of detection of creatinine was 5.0 mg/l. The linear response of this method extended over a 450 to 930-fold range in concentration for the catecholamines and covered the range of clinical interest. The within-day precision of this method was +/-2.0-2.7%. CONCLUSIONS The ability of this method to simultaneously monitor both creatinine and other analytes makes this HPLC/FIA system an attractive method for use in monitoring urinary compounds. With this approach it was possible to provide fast results for small volumes of random urine samples that were collected as part of a psychological study.
